This has since become a staple for iPhones, returning on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 lineup as well. It seems like Apple is now working on improving this technology with a secret partnership with SpaceX and T-Mobile.

Apple joins hands with SpaceX & T-Mobile for Starlink connectivity for iPhones

A new Bloomberg report claimed that the Cupertino based giant has been working with SpaceX and T-Mobile in secret to bring Starling satellite connectivity to the iPhones. This likely takes advantage of the partnership between T-Mobile and SpaceX that was also announced back in 2022. The report further adds that T-Mobile has already begun testing this feature for a limited number of iPhone users.

It is currently in the beta phase so it likely isn’t a polished experience at the moment. However, the feature is currently available to users that are running iPhones with iOS 18.3, which was recently released earlier this week. In an official note for the T-Mobile Starlin beta, the telecom brand stated that “You can now stay connected by texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.”

For those unaware, the carrier had previously stated that Samsung Galaxy phones would be getting Starlink communication support. The collaboration between T-Mobile and Starlink with Apple only supports sending messages via satellite communication. However, there are plans for bringing voice calls and data sometime in the future. In the past, the iPhone maker was rumored to be working with GlobalStart for its satellite connectivity feature on its smartphones. But now, the partnership might be expanding with T-Mobile who claimed that all users will get access to this feature later this year.

Samsung has unveiled its lineup of premium smartphones for 2023. Three different smartphones are included in the series: the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra. All of the smartphones are powered by a customised version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen2, dubbed “Snapdragon 8 Gen2 for Galaxy” by Samsung. Anyway, the customers who pre-ordered the Samsung Galaxy S23 with the intention of using it on the T-Mobile network in the USA had a problem that resulted in them losing network access to their existing handsets and SIM cards. Now that T-Mobile has made an official statement about it, it appears that Samsung made a mistake!

An internal T-Mobile documentation describing the root of the problem has recently surfaced. Due to a fault in Samsung’s system, the internal eSIM function on the Galaxy S23 was activated before the phone was shipped to pre-order consumers. As a result, affected customers lose network access to their current devices and SIM cards. The issue persists even when SIM protection is turned on. So in a nutshell, T-Mobile wasn’t the one responsible for the cause. But it was Samsung on whom the blame goes.

The good news is that the problem appears to be limited to a small number of Galaxy S23 phones, thus not everyone who ordered a new Galaxy S23 from Samsung for T-network Mobile has had this early eSIM activation issue. Fortunately, impacted users’ SIM cards have not been switched by malevolent parties. Additionally, impacted Galaxy S23 buyers who have been disconnected from T-network Mobile can resolve the issue by contacting the carrier’s support line.

If you were to ever wander into the deep woods or traveled to the middle of an ocean, chances are that you will have no cellular signal, meaning you can’t access the Internet and you can’t make calls unless you have a satellite communicator with you. And the main reason for the lack of cellular signals in places like the forest and the ocean is because telecommunications providers don’t have cell towers built in the area to provide you cell service to access the Internet or to make calls.

However, in 2022, technology has matured far enough that humans have finally found a solution to tackle the problem of providing cell service even in remote places that were previously unreachable by traditional cell signals. 

In a live event today, US telecommunications provider, T-Mobile alongside the globally renowned aerospace company, SpaceX, introduced Starlink V2, the satellites that can directly transmit cell signals to mobile phones and Tesla cars from space.

The announcement today was mainly focused on Starlink V2’s implementation in the US with telecommunications provider T-Mobile. Under the new plan which they dubbed Coverage Above and Beyond, both companies will establish a new network using T-Mobile’s existing mid-band spectrum across the United States. 

The main advantage of using an existing spectrum is that the majority of smartphones on its existing network will be able to connect to the new network without any need for new equipment.

Leveraging on SpaceX’s Starlink V2 satellites, the new network aims to eliminate cellular dead zones across the country. Whether it be from the middle of Death Valley to the Great Smokey Mountains, the newly established network aims to provide cell phone connectivity every time, everywhere.

Chief Engineer of SpaceX, Elon Musk says that for the new network, the deployment of Starlink V2 satellites will work great for texting and voice calls but not for usages that require high bandwidth. This is mainly because each cell zone under the new network can only deliver 2 to 4Mbps. 

Although SpaceX’s Starlink V2 technology is only currently implemented in the USA, both SpaceX and T-Mobile shared their vision for expanding Coverage Above and Beyond globally, issuing an open invitation to the world’s carriers to collaborate for truly global connectivity. And in a tweet posted by SpaceX CEO himself, Elon Musk, the man hopes to be able to eliminate cellular dead zones once and for all, worldwide.

Talking about the smartphone itself first, it is the latest handset model from the company and is also the first in the world to feature the MediaTek Dimensity 1050 SoC. On the front, the Edge (2022) sports a 6.6 inch OLED display that has a Full HD+ resolution, HDR10+ support, a 144Hz refresh rate, and a 32 megapixel selfie camera. Meanwhile, the rear packs a triple camera setup that consists of a 50 megapixel primary sensor, a 13 megapixel ultra wide angle lens, and a 2 megapixel depth shooter.

The smartphone is powered by a large 5,000mAh battery that supports 30W TurboPower charging as well as 15W wireless charging. Other features including, dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, USB Type C port, Bluetooth 5.2, in display fingerprint scanner, and NFC. Now, T-Mobile has announced that both its new and existing customers will be able to get the new Moto smartphone for free when adding a qualifying line, which is detailed on its official website.

Earlier this year, TCL had launched two new budget smartphones at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 — TCL 30 XE and TCL 30 V.

While the TCL 30 V smartphone has been available in the United States through Verizon, the company is bringing the TCL 30 XE 5G smartphone to the US for the price of $198.

The TCL 30 XE 5G will be available for purchase in the United States later this week, starting from Friday thorugh T-Mobile and and its prepaid subsidiary Metro by T-Mobile.

As for the specifications, the device features a 6.52-inch display with 1600 x 720 pixels screen resolution, 90Hz refresh rate, and 180Hz touch sampling rate. Under the hood, it is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor.

It packs 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage along with a microSD card slot with support for expandable storage of up to 512GB.

In the camera department, the phone features a triple-camera setup that includes a 13-megapixel primary sensor, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro lens. On the front side, there’s an 8-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

The smartphone is running the Android 11 operating system out-of-the-box but the company has promised that it will get the Android 12 update. It is powered by a 4,500mAh battery and supports 18W fast charging technology.

T-Mobile has quietly announced the TVision Hub – a streaming dongle with essentially the same design as the Chromecast with Google TV, but with a couple of changes. It would be the second Google TV streaming stick to be sold in the United States.

Coming to the changes, firstly, there’s a clear difference between the remotes of the two dongles, with the one for the TVision having a dedicated power and input controls for the TV, a live TV guide shortcut, and three app shortcuts to YouTube, Netflix, and a T-Mobile-branded TV app (via 9to5Google). It’s unclear what the app exactly is for but it could be possible that T-Mobile has created it for supplying curated content by itself.

The other notable change is that TVision Hub features a built-in Ethernet port that’s seemingly paired with a micro-USB port for power. But T-Mobile’s website does state that USB-C is also available.

The dongle makes use of the Amlogic S905Y4 chip, which is a newer and more powerful chip than the one found in the Chromecast with Google TV and even comes with AV1 decoding. And on top of that, it boots into Android TV OS 11 out of the box, which is something the Chromecast is yet to see.

It remains to be seen if T-Mobile has made any changes to Google TV’s UI but the product page does mention 4K HDR support.

If interested in purchasing the TVision Hub, it could cost you just $50, although T-Mobile Home Internet customers can even get it for free.

HMD Global has launched its first Nokia X-series smartphone which is specifically made for the United States — Nokia X100. However, the device will be available exclusively through T-Mobile and Metro network carriers.

The smartphone features a 6.67-inch Full HD+ display with 2400 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and a 20:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the device comes powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G chipset.

As for the memory configuration, the phone packs 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot that allows you to further expand the storage capacity on the device up to 1TB.

In the camera department, there’s a quad-camera setup on the back taking care of your photography needs. It offers a 48-megapixel primary camera, a 5-megapixel ultrawide lens, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro lens. On the front side, you get a 16-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

The Nokia X100 is running the Android 11 operating system but the company has not yet revealed when the device will be getting the latest software update, nor has it shared if it will be getting updates and security patches.

For 5G connectivity, the phone is compatible with T-Mobile’s widely available sub-6Hz 5G network. It is powered by a 4,470mAh battery with support for 18W charging and the company is also including a charger in the box.

The Nokia X100 is priced at $252 and will be available for purchase in the United States from 19th November. As mentioned above, the device is exclusively available to T-Mobile and Metro T-Mobile customers.

If you live in North America and want to grab an affordable 5G smartphone, then the OnePlus Nord N200 5G is a great choice. However, it is not the only option as T-Mobile has announced its own affordable 5G smartphone that costs even less than the Nord N200 5G. The REVVL V+ 5G is not only cheaper but more stylish.

The phone has a flat frame and a flat back much like the iPhone 12 series. While T-Mobile calls the color Nebula Black, it still has a bit of the operator’s signature color. For example, the power button is colored and there is a vertical streak of magenta on the back that adds a bit of style to the phone’s appearance.

The REVVL V+ 5G has a 6.82-inch LCD display, making it much bigger than the OnePlus Nord N200 which has a 6.49-inch display. Sadly, T-Mobile’s phone settles for an HD+ panel with a 60Hz refresh rate. The screen also has a waterdrop notch.

Powering the phone is MediaTek’s Dimensity 700 processor and it is paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. There are three cameras on the back of the phone – a 16MP main sensor, a 5MP sensor, and a 2MP sensor. The front-facing camera is a 16MP sensor.

The REVVL V+ 5G has face unlock and a fingerprint scanner buried under the magenta colored power button. Under the flat back panel is a 5000mAh battery and just the like Nord N200, it too supports 18W fast charging. A power brick and USB-A to USB-C cable is included in the box. The phone ships with Android 11.

Interested buyers will be able to get the REVVL V+ 5G starting July 12 at Metro stores and from T-Mobile (physical stores and online) starting July 23 for $200. It will be exclusive to the two networks. T-Mobile is also running a competition and selected winners will get a free REVVL V+ 5G phone.

The OnePlus Nord line of smartphones that target the upper mid range segment in the market have seen great success at Metro by T-Mobile. This has even boosted the company’s sales share at Metro to nearly 15 percent.

According to a PCMag report, this marks the highest share the Chinese smartphone maker has ever seen with a US carrier. As per the Wave7 Research analyst, Metro sells about 15 to 16 million handsets per year, which means that the Nord devices could account for more than 2 million units in this year alone. Jeff Moore, Wave7 Principal stated that “OnePlus is getting back to its fundamentals, offering good specs at an affordable price.” For those unaware, the OnePlus Nord N10 has become a hit in the US, being quite popular due to its relatively affordable price tag.

At the moment, Metro offers the Nord N10 and Nord N100 free for people switching from another carrier. The former is priced at 299.99 US Dollars while the latter costs just 179.99 US Dollars. Notably, the company has seen its market share rise at T-Mobile, with it also having a display space for unlocked Nord N10 devices at Best Buy as well. Wave7 believes that the company could see higher sales if it had a better distribution channel, since stores only receive “minor shipments” that tend to sell out quickly.

Interestingly, the success of OnePlus arrives at the cost of Motorola, which has seen its share drop from around 20 percent last year to less than 10 percent right now. This was also due to the company rolled off the Moto G Stylus devices from the shelves and the brand no longer holding a strong position in the segment by offering affordable but capable smartphones in the price range of OnePlus.

OnePlus had partnered with the largest wireless network carrier in the United States — Verizon to launch the OnePlus 8 UW smartphone. If you were expecting the same with the newly launched OnePlus 8T, then there’s some bad news.

According to a report from Android Authority, Verizon has confirmed that there won’t be a OnePlus 8T Verizon variant. This means that the users of the network carrier won’t be able to get discounts or payment plans for this new smartphone.

However, the report goes on to add that the users may still be able to activate the device on the Verizon network to use it if they already have or purchase an unlocked variant of the OnePlus 8T smartphone.

T-Mobile launched three new REVVL-branded smartphones in the US. One of the models, simply called REVVL 5G is the most affordable 5G handset from the carrier priced at $399.99 ($16.67/month). The other two handsets – REVVL 4 and REVVL 4+ are 4G devices costing $120 ($5/month) and $192 ($8/month) respectively. All three of them can be purchased from T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile online and offline stores starting September 4.

According to the press release, new and existing T-Mobile (including T-Mobile for Business) and Metro customers with up to 12 lines “can get REVVL 4 and REVVL 4+ for FREE or the REVVL 5G for just $200 after 24 bill credits when they switch or add a line”.

REVVL 5G

The REVVL 5G is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage with support for microSD card. On the front, the phone sports a 6.53-inch 19:59 FHD+ LCD panel with a single punch-hole at the top left corner housing a 16MP selfie camera.

The back of the phone features a triple camera set up consisting of 48MP primary sensor, 8MP ultra-wide unit, and 5MP macro sensor. They are located on a square module along with an LED flash. The handset’s rear panel also nests a capacitive fingerprint sensor.

Last but not least, it runs Android 10 backed by a 4,500mAh battery and only comes in a single Nebula Black color variant.

REVVL 4

The REVVL 4 as the cheapest handset features a 6.22-inch 19:9 HD+ LCD panel with a V-shaped notch nesting a 5MP selfie camera. It is powered by MediaTek Helio A22 (MT6761V/CA) SoC paired with 2GB RAM and 32 internal storage.

On the back, it sports a 13MP camera, LED flash and a capacitive fingerprint sensor. It runs Android 10 and also supports microSD card. Lastly, it comes in Graphite color and gets its power from a 3,500mAh battery

REVVL 4+

The REVVL 4+  sits between the above-mentioned two smartphones in terms of both specifications and price. It sports a 6.52-inch 18:9 HD+ LCD panel on the front with a V-shaped notch housing a 16MP selfie camera. Whereas, it flaunts a 16MP + 5MP dual-camera setup on the back accompanied by an LED flash and a capacitive fingerprint sensor. 

It comes powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. Other features include microSD card slot, Android 10, 4,000mAh battery, and Steel Gray paint job.

One of what should be the most protracted merger deals in the tech industry has finally come to a conclusion. That is T-Mobile and Sprint’s merger deal. The merger was first announced around April 2018 and has met several obstacles on the way which has prevented a deal from getting sealed all this while. 

It took almost two years after T-Mobile US officially announced its merger with Sprint as well a several hearing and legal negotiations with US regulators to get to this point. The deal worth $23 billion will result in a collaboration of the third and fourth-largest wireless carrier in the US in terms of subscriber base, forming a new company known as “The New T-Mobile”.

The entities will equally join forces in terms of infrastructures to take on AT&T and Verizon Wireless the top 2 carriers in the US. Sprint’s spectrum and subscribers will be transitioned to T-Mobile. Sprint possesses a precious 2.5GHz mid-band spectrum which is ideal for 5G. The new T-Mobile will deploy this spectrum alongside T-Mobile’s own low-band 5G (600Mhz) for a nationwide rollout. T-Mobile says it will offer eight times faster speeds compared to LTE and expects the speeds to get up to 15 times faster over the next six years. T-Mobile also plans on using the mid-bands to cover Americans in rural areas.

As part of a deal made with US regulators, Sprint will sell its prepaid assets including Boost Mobile, its 9.3 million subscribers, more than 7000 retail stores, and its 800Mhz band spectrum to Dish Network, creating a new #4 carrier in the US. Dish will maintain these subscribers on T-Mobile’s networks as an MVNO under a seven-year lease while it develops and rolls out its own 5G network. Boost Mobile will be transitioned under the Dish Network brand. The new T-Mobile promise not to change its pricing for three years even with 5G offering.

As a result of the merger deal, T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere has stepped down earlier than the April 30 expiration date of his contract. The company’s President and COO, Mike Sievert has now stepped in as the new CEO of “The New T-Mobile”. Legere will remain as one of T-Mobile’s new board of directors. Legere assumed the position of T-Mobile’s CEO in 2012 and oversaw several massive growth with the company going from 33.3 million subscribers at the end of the third quarter of 2012 to 86 million customers at the end of the fourth quarter of 2019.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series will be announced exactly one week from today. The series consists of the Galaxy S20, the Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Ahead of the launch next week, details of the phone’s US pricing from the top carriers have surfaced. As expected, these devices are not cheap.

The source of the price leaks is YouTuber, Jon Prosser, and he said he got the info from sources at the carriers. Starting with T-Mobile, the magenta network will sell the Galaxy S20 for $999 while the Galaxy S20+ will get a $1199 price tag. The Galaxy S20 Ultra will even sell for much higher at $1399.

At AT&T, the price tags are surprisingly cheaper by $100. The Galaxy S20 will sell for $899, the Galaxy S20+ will be sold for $1099 while the Galaxy S20 Ultra will have a $1299 price tag.

Head over to Verizon and the prices go back up to $999 for the Galaxy S20, $1199 for the Galaxy S20+, and $1399 for the Galaxy S20 Ultra. By the way, all the aforementioned prices irrespective of the carrier are for the 5G models. However, RAM and storage were not disclosed.

Early last year, Huawei was all set to make a big announcement at CES. For the first time ever in the U.S., the telecommunications giant was going to launch its smartphone through a carrier. Just when things were looking good for the Chinese smartphone maker, the U.S. carrier that was supposed to launch its phone, backed out. The relationship between Huawei and U.S. companies has deteriorated ever since with the latest blow being the inability to even use Google apps on its new smartphones.

But outside of the U.S., T-Mobile still sells Huawei smartphones. And their relationship is actually pretty old, with the carrier selling Huawei rebranded Android phones as far back as 2009! And when did it all begin? With Huawei’s first Android smartphone!

It was the year 2009, and Huawei was still young in the smartphone market. But the company was determined to make its mark in the industry. It was one of the first smartphone makers to jump on the Android bandwagon. After the world’s first Android smartphone, the HTC Dream aka T-Mobile G1 was released in February 2009, T-Mobile launched another Android model, this time made by Huawei, in October 2009.

Back when the T-Mobile Pulse (also known as the Huawei U8220) was launched in the market, it was one of the cheapest Android phones available. Another highlight of the phone was its large 3.5-inch display. In comparison, the HTC Dream featured a slightly smaller 3.2-inch panel. And with a responsive touch screen display and HVGA 480 x 320-pixel resolution, the phone offered pretty good features for its starting £185 price in the UK. T-Mobile UK also offered a £19.99 + £10 top up on PAYG (Pay As You Go) plan, making it extremely cheap for first time Android adopters. In case you noticed, the Pulse was launched in the UK and some other markets in Europe, and not in the U.S.

T-Mobile Pulse offered an excellent Android experience at an Affordable Price

The Pulse came with a 3.5-inch HVGA display which was pretty good for its time. The phone, made out of plastic, was slightly curved at the back. There was a unique carbon fiber pattern on the back of the phone which looked cool. What made it even cooler was that the phone’s theme had a similar Carbon fiber pattern.

Along with touchscreen input, you could use its trackball and home and back buttons to navigate through the Android OS. It ran Android 1.5 Cupcake with Google Apps installed. You could update it up to Android 2.1 Eclair, with custom ROMs further bringing v2.2 to the device. There were two more buttons on either side of the trackball, a call button on the left and an end button on the right. There were also volume buttons as well as a dedicated camera shutter button. The phone supported MicroSD cards, with a 2GB card coming right inside the box.

Interestingly, Huawei decided to use a 2.5mm headphone jack on the device, instead of the traditional 3.5mm jack. But it was generous enough to provide a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter so that you could listen to music with your everyday headphones. There was a decent 1500mAh battery on board, which wasn’t great but did the job of keeping the phone running for a day. The 3.2MP camera was nothing to boast about. There was a low-resolution front camera as well for video calls.

A highlight of the T-Mobile Pulse was its 3G support. For its low price, it brought HSPA speeds along with other connectivity features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and even A-GPS.

T-Mobile Pulse had a ‘Mini’ Version Too!

The original Pulse seems to have done well to warrant a release of a T-Mobile Pulse ‘Mini’ version. This mini model was released in May 2010 with a tiny 2.5-inch display with lower resolution but still supporting HSPA 3G speeds. The phone came with the Snapdragon S1 processor with a 3.15MP rear camera, a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack, A-GPS, and Android 2.1 Eclair out of the box. Oh, there was no selfie camera on this model, unlike the larger ‘Pulse’ sibling.

Huawei entered the Android market with these low-end models that many of us don’t even remember. But the company has used the same Android platform to grow into the world’s second-largest smartphone maker, leaving behind big names such as Apple and Nokia.

It is enlightening to see how Huawei started its journey in the Android ecosystem with a carrier partnership from T-Mobile. But now, it might have to drop the very thing that pushed it to the top of the smartphone market. And it took just ten years for this to happen.

Huawei could be forced to switch from Android to its own HarmonyOS in the coming months. And if things get worse, jumping off the Android bandwagon could be its only option.

Almost one year after US carriers T-Mobile and Sprint agreed to a merger, the deal is still facing several hurdles in the U.S.  Earlier on, there were reports that the merger’s approval by the US authority may be hinged on the two parent companies Deutsche Telekom AG (T-Mobile’s parent company) and SoftBank Group Corp (Sprint’s parent company) ditching Huawei’s technology globally. While that may have been agreed upon, there are reports that the deal may still get blocked by some US states.

Bloomberg reports that the attorney generals of several states are worried about the effect the merger would have on competition. The report specifically mentioned California and New York as states that are leading a group of over a dozen states that would file a lawsuit if the Department of Justice does not challenge the deal. The reports quoted unnamed sources of hinting that state enforcers have the power to go to court to block the tie-up even if federal officials at the Justice Department and the FCC approve it. Company representatives on both sides are yet to comment on the matter, but in the meantime, shares fell around 1% after the announcement.

T-Mobile initially offered $26.5 billion to acquire Sprint and all its market presence. This would make the company a major challenger to AT&T and Verizon’s dominance in the United States. The deal will potentially see the new conglomerate controlling over 30% of the US wireless market, with an even higher share in some states.

Around August last year, OnePlus announced that it had sealed a mutually beneficial deal with T-Mobile that would see the OnePlus 6T and subsequent smartphones getting released under the US carrier. Smartphone sale in the US market is heavily dependent on telecom carriers. So, the move was a pretty impressive one and the results have started streaming in

According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC) as contained in an official press release by OnePlus, it ranks among the top five high-end smartphone vendors during the fourth quarter. Much of this is as a result of the OnePlus 6T that was released within the fourth quarter. The OP6T is reported to have sold so well in the US between October and December. Fora company that is barely 5 years old in the industry, that is no small feat. Also, this is coming in the face of a slump in global smartphone shipments.

Unfortunately, OnePlus didn’t disclose its market share in the high-end US market but we believe it is huge to have lifted the company to the top 5 brands in Q4 2018. The figures could even be higher but the OnePlus 6T wasn’t available all quarter just like the OP6 that equally got lots of positive reviews. In case you are wondering who the remaining four brands are, that wasn’t disclosed but there is no doubt Apple and Samsung occupy the first two lots. Google and LG are tipped to also be among the top 5.

The long-awaited proposed merger between U.S. carriers T-Mobile and Sprint may finally obtain regulatory authorization as early as the coming week. The government regulatory bodies involved with authorizing the merger, agree that it can move forward, this is according to a new report from Reuters. However, the approval might hinge on an unexpected requirement: that Deutsche Telekom AG (T-Mobile’s parent company) and SoftBank Group Corp (Sprint’s parent company) fail to use Huawei equipment in their respective worldwide networks.

According to Reuters, both parent companies reported that they are “considering” complying to the requirement to get the deal to go through. At the moment, neither Sprint or T-Mobile use Huawei network equipment in the United States. Nevertheless, both SoftBank and Deutsche Telekom use Huawei equipment for their networks respectively everywhere in the world. The approval of the T-Mobile-Sprint merger would make both companies to slowly phase out Huawei equipment currently in use and refuse to buy Huawei equipment going forward.

The source for this Reuters report says that Deutsche Telekom has been pressured by U.S. government officials in particular, to stop using Huawei equipment, mentioning security concerns related to Huawei’s alleged ties to the Chinese government. Huawei has repeatedly stated that these security concerns are invalid. However, several countries — including the U.S., Australia, and Japan has refused to use Huawei equipment for all or some of its networking purposes. If the T-Mobile-Sprint merger approval becomes successful, it would cut the “Big Four” carriers down to the “Big Three,” with the other remaining U.S. carriers being AT&T and Verizon. The combined T-Mobile-Sprint company would simply be called T-Mobile.

Since the launch of the OnePlus 3T, OnePlus has continued to stick with the tradition of launching a second, slightly touched up variant. The first was the OnePlus 3T and we have seen the OnePlus 5T which arrived barely six months after the launch of the OnePlus 5. That tradition will continue with the OnePlus 6T which is expected to be launched in a few months time, possibly in October. It has now emerged that the OnePlus 6T will likely set the company on a pedestal that no other Chinese OEM has attained. The device will reportedly get the backing of US carrier, T-Mobile.

According to sources familiar with the deal which is said to still be in the negotiation table, the major US carrier will retail the OP6T and an agreement has been reached to that effect. However, OnePlus will need to get a technical approval which is the testing required by T-Mobile to get certification on the network. The failure of OnePlus to get this approval could delay the roll out as the OnePlus 6T may likely get launched in October.

LG has announced a new budget phone for the US market. The new LG K30 was announced yesterday and is now available on T-Mobile.

The LG K30 is actually not a new phone. It is the same device as the LG K10 released in the first quarter of the year but with a new name and some little differences.

The phone has a 5.3-inch HD screen and is powered by a Snapdragon 425 processor. It has 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (16GB on the K10). A single 13MP sensor with PDAF sits on the back and there is a 5MP selfie camera.

The LG K30 has a 2880mAh battery with support for fast charging. There is also a fingerprint scanner on the rear of the device. It also runs Android 7.1 Nougat and not Marshmallow like the K10

While the specs are entry level, the price is a bit on the high side. T-Mobile is asking for $225 for the device or $9/month for 24 months. It is available only in Aurora Black.

If you want an alternative device, there is the Nokia 6 (2017) priced at $230 on Amazon. It works on T-Mobile too and offers a lot more features for $5 extra.

Sprint and T-Mobile have jointly announced a mega-merger agreement which is valued at $146 billion, including liabilities. The announcement was made on Sunday and reflects both company’s desire to catch up with rival operators AT&T and Verizon. AT&T and T-Mobile both provide service using the GSM standard while Verizon and Sprint primarily use CDMA. All four also operate networks using LTE standard for their 4G services.

However, both Sprint and T-Mobile have reportedly lagged behind Verizon and AT&T who are the two largest wireless companies. The proposed deal is an all-stock deal which values Sprint at about $59 billion and the combined company at $146 billion, including debt. Without debt, the combined company is valued at $26.5 billion, showing how heavily indebted both companies are.

The new company will be called T-Mobile and will retain the two headquarters at Bellevue, Washington and Overland Park, Kansas. T-Mobile’s current CEO John Legere will retain the top job in the newly formed carrier while SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son had to give up control of his company to make the merger happen. The deal isn’t a done deal, though, as it still has to face scrutiny from regulatory authorities in the U.S. If approved, the combined T-Mobile would have an estimated 120 million subscribers and would be in a good stead to take on Verizon and AT&T. Both merger also promises 5G technology in the near future.

Every year, individuals and brands alike celebrate April Fools’ Day by playing pranks or practical jokes on one another. This year is no different and we’ve scoured the web for jokes from some popular brands.

OnePlus – PeiCoin

OnePlus first released a teaser for its PeiCoin a few days ago but has now released full details. In an official forum post, OnePlus describes the PeiCoin as a digital currency that will be integrated with future OxygenOS releases.

Users will be able to mine PeiCoin individually or in groups, transfer to one another and also use it as an exchange for local currency. OnePlus even goes as far as saying it believes the currency will be adopted globally someday. A PeiCoin Wallet is said to arrive via an OTA update.

While most of the post is just balderdash, there was a key info at the end. OnePlus officially confirmed that its next phone will be called the OnePlus 6. Up until today, it has not referred to its next phone as the OnePlus 6.

Xiaomi – Mi A1 With Six Cameras

This is a lazy attempt at a joke from Xiaomi. The Chinese manufacturer has slapped four extra cameras on the much loved Xiaomi Mi A1 bringing the number of rear cameras to six. While we think their decision to choose the Mi A1 as the subject of the joke is due to its name A1 – April 1, we believe they could have come up with something better.

Meizu – Meizu M6s 3.5 Edition

Meizu’s head of global marketing, Ard Boudeling, must have seen Xiaomi’s April Fools’ joke and quickly came up with his own version. His April Fools’ joke is a Meizu M6s with three 3.5mm audio jacks and its called the Meizu M6s 3.5 Edition. Boring!

Razer already released its April Fools’ joke yesterday and it is pretty funny. The manufacturer which is known for its gaming hardware and smartphone decided to make something for players to keep up with its products. Therein comes Project Venom v2, a solution that boosts your gaming abilities and an improved variant of 2010’s Project Venom.

Nokia – Nokia CityMan

Development in the mobile phone industry has seen an exponential growth in the last decade but one feature that hasn’t seen much improvement is the battery. With phones combining all the features of multiple gadgets into one, it’s no surprise battery life suffers.

HMD Global has announced its next smartphone, the Nokia CityMan with 1-year battery life. Sounds good right? As long as you are willing to forfeit all the current features of not only a smartphone but even a modern feature phone.

The Nokia CityMan is a dinosaur in the mobile industry. First released in 1987, the 760g phone packs a 1,000mAh battery that should be sufficient for calls and powering its monochrome display.

T-Mobile – SideKicks

We have saved the best for last. T-Mobile brought back its popular SideKick for its April Fools’ joke but this is not the SideKick you remember.

The new SideKicks is the first smartshoephone. Yes, that’s a word now. The Magenta-colored sneakers modeled after Converse sneakers is a smartphone and a shoe combined. It has a slide-out screen, retractable shoelaces that double as earphones, speakers on the left foot, a smart assistant that responds to the hotword “Hey SideKicks”, a fitness tracker, NFC, and more.

T-Mobile really went all out on this joke and it is easily the best. If you do like the Magenta colored sneakers, you can actually order the shoes here but just know that it doesn’t have the above mentioned features.

US-based wireless network operator T-Mobile has launched a new smartphone — Revvl Plus. This is the successor of the Revvl smartphone, which was launched by the carrier earlier this year in August.

The company says that the phone is “heavy on features but light on the budget.” Compared to the Revvl launched earlier this year, its successor comes with a bigger display, a bigger battery and an upgraded processor.

One of the highlight of the smartphone is the dual camera lenses on the back of the smartphone. The device comes with a 13-megapixel lens and a 5-megapixel shooter at the back. As per the company, the dual-camera setup will allow users to create bokeh effects. On the front, there is an 8-MP selfie camera.

The smartphone comes with a 6-inch Full HD display with screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. While most smartphone manufacturers are now offering 18:9 aspect ratio for the display, this one comes with the old-school 16:9 aspect ratio. It also has a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass on top protecting the display from minor scratches.

Under the hood, the device is powered by a 2.0GHz oct-core processor. However, the company has not revealed which chipset is used. It packs 2GB of RAM and offers 32GB of internal storage. There is also a microSD card slot, allowing users to further expand the storage capacity.

Just like its predecessor, the Revvl Plus also runs on Android Nougat operating system. There is a fingerprint sensor at the back, just below the camera module. The smartphone is powered by a 3,380mAh battery.

The Revvl Plus is priced at $199 in the US. In addition, users will also be able to lease it for $9 a month through T-Mobile’s Jump On Demand Program or pay it off in 24 monthly installments of $8 after making a down payment of $8. The smartphone will be available in stores from November 17, while the special edition with black-and-magenta colour will be exclusively available online.

The Snapdragon X50 5G modem was introduced by Qualcomm exactly a year ago. During the ongoing Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit in Hong Kong, the company has successfully demonstrated 5G connection through the single-chip X50 5G modem using 28GHz mmWave radio frequency band.

Qualcomm had set a target of hitting a 5G speeds of 5 Gbps. However, the company could achieve 5G connection of over 1 Gbps by carrier aggregation of two 100 MHz 5G bands. The Snapdragon X50 LTE modem is capable to support up to eight 100 MHz bands through carrier aggregation.

The 5G modem can offer fivefold faster connectivity compared to 4G modem. However, 5G modem consumes the same amount of power as conventional 4G modems. This is because the company has employed efficient amplifies as well as enhanced antenna design. It seems that it will take few more years for consumers to take advantage of 5G connectivity.

In order to test and optimize 5G performance in mobile form factor, the company made use of its first mmWave 5G smartphone reference design. It will be used for testing 5G modems, radio and networks with smartphone manufacturers in the coming years to launch 5G-enabled phones in the first half of 2019.

Coming to the 5G reference design device, it has a thickness of 9mm and is fitted with an edge-to-edge screen and dual rear cameras. To test Snapdragon X50 modem inside the reference device, Qualcomm has built a wave antenna that appears like a dime. The company claims it can integrate two of these antennas in smartphone. It will be working on reducing its size by 50 percent over the next year.

Qualcomm has also announced some components that will make it easier for device makers to support the new 600 MHz spectrum from T-Mobile. As of this writing, the LG V30 is the only device that can support the new spectrum from T-Mobile. By the end of 2017 and early 2018, more smartphones are expected to support it.

The U.S. based chip maker has also introduced Snapdragon 636 as an enhanced edition of Snapdragon 630 that was unveiled earlier this year. The new chipset that is built for mid-range phones features custom Kryo 260 cores and carries support for 18:9 displays. Speculations have that an upcoming Xiaomi Redmi phone could be the first Snapdragon 636 phone.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ phones are now available on pre-orders with color options like Midnight Black, Orchid Gray and Arctic Silver in the U.S. Customers who pre-order the S8 or S8+ can avail a free Gear VR with Controller as well as Oculus Bonus Content.  Pre-orders across AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint and US Cellular will begin on March 30 at 12:01 AM ET and last until April 21.

The unlocked Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ would be available for purchase through Best Buy in the U.S. with a respective pricing of $724.99 and $824.99. The unlocked models are cheaper than carrier counterparts. The shipments of the unlocked units will begin from May 9.

US Cellular has not announced the full retail pricing of Galaxy S8 and S8+. It is an offering an trade-in offer that allows customers to either trade an eligible smartphone (iPhone 5S or later; Galaxy S6 or later) to avail the Galaxy S8 for free whereas the S8 will come for $3.64 monthly payments for 30 months. If there is no phone available for the trade-in offer, the carrier will provide $100 promotional gift card. However, customers need to avail Total Plan or Shared Connect plan and also subscribe for Device Protection + program.

Galaxy S8, S8+ UK Pre-orders, Pricing

In the U.K, the pre-orders have started from March 29 until April 19 on the official UK website of Samsung and operators like Carphone Warehouse, EE, Sky Mobile and Tesco Mobile. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ phones will be respectively available for £689 and £779 and will come in color options like Midnight Black and Orchid Grey. The Arctic Silver color be made available soon.
