Apple leads 2021 tablet market despite iPad shortage over supply issues

A new report has revealed data related to the global tablet market in 2021. In the new report, we can see that Apple has dominated the segment, despite facing a shortage of iPads caused by various issues with its supply chain.

According to Canalys, the tablet market in the US grew by a meager 1 percent last year. Although, the shipments in total crossed a whopping 132 million units in 2021. During this period, the Cupertino based giant took the lead with its market share accounting for more than 19 million tablet units. This is quite notable considering the lead times for iPads were hitting up to nine weeks. While the iPhone maker did dominate the segment, it also saw a decline of 17 percent in terms of shipments over the previous year. Its market share also fell from an impressive 44.6 percent in Q4 2020 to 40.2 percent in Q4 2021.

However, this fall was also caused by the general fall in demand for tablets, which were down by 31 percent year on year. While the company led the tablet market, it did not sit on the throne in the PC market. Meanwhile, HP was the leader with a 30 percent market share, but Apple still was one of the top five sellers of the year. In the overall PC market, the desktop category saw the greatest growth with 9 percent rise in 2021.

The Canalys report added that “The US PC industry’s overall growth in 2021 highlights the long term potential of the demand initially created by the pandemic. While Q4 2021 showed less impressive performance than the year overall, the market is well positioned to continue providing significant opportunities, especially from a revenue perspective, for the coming year amid strong business demand.”

Tablet market in EMEA region to rise by 17% in Q1 2021: Report

The tablet market in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) is estimated to rise in the first quarter of this year. It is projected that the market for the large screen device market will rise by 17.1 percent year on year.

As per an IDC report, the bump in the market arrives amid the continued boost in the educational sectors across the globe. At the moment, various government programs are ongoing across the EMEA region to provide students with these personal computing devices or, at the very least, subsidize such products. According to Nikolina Jurisic, senior research manager at IDC, “Notable education deliveries will shape the market in early 2021, with high volumes expected to be shipped in developed and emerging economies alike.”

The researcher further added that the “tablet demand is expected to profit from supply shortages in components such as integrated circuits and panels that are primarily affecting entry-level notebooks, as the category stands out as an alternative for price-sensitive consumers.” While the first quarter is expected to register a strong first quarter, the overall tablet shipment in the EMEA region is projected to fall by 10.5 percent year on year in 2021.

Daniel Gonalves, another researcher from IDC stated that “Even though the total addressable market has increased, we believe it is heavily skewed towards traditional notebooks, and after all the education deals are deployed there will be an unfavorable year on year comparison for tablets. However, a scenario of near normal in the second half of the year is expected to benefit ultra versatile devices such as detachables in enterprise. As professionals adopt a hybrid approach between office and remote working, mobility becomes an increasingly indispensable feature which can largely benefit iOS and Windows based detachables.”

India Tablet Market records 14.7% YoY growth in 2020, Lenovo remains the king with 39% share: IDC

Recently, we saw a review of how products like smartphones, Smart Speakers performed in the Indian market in 2020. Now, a new report by IDC takes us back to last year to tell us how tablet devices sold in the country.

According to the report, the heart of the tablet device demands was around $100-200 which is a no-brainer. 2020 was an unusual year in the last decade as people were forced to study and work from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This meant the demand for tablets started rising rapidly.

As a result Tablet vendors got the most of 2020 when it comes to shipments. Especially, Lenovo, whose tablets are very popular, registered a whopping 153% YoY growth despite facing a 15.1% decline in the commercial segment. It is the market leader with a 39% market share in India.

Anyway, the report says that a total of 2.8 million units of tablet devices shipped in India last year. This translates to a 14.7% YoY growth and it is the first positive growth in the last 4 years. Out of this, consumer shipments account for 59.8% YoY growth over 2019 whereas commercial shipments plummeted by 14.3%.

The Chinese giant Lenovo is followed by companies like Samsung, Apple, iBall, Huawei, and others. Samsung went a step above Lenovo and saw a 157% YoY growth. The company brought promising tablets like the Galaxy Tab A7 2020 to help boost sales.

Despite struggling with stocks initially, Apple managed to jump back to 3rd in the tablet segment in India. Its growth reached 13% YoY while companies like iBall faced a 69.4% decline in shipments.

Last but not the least, seeing Huawei on the list is a bit of a surprise considering the tussle with the US it’s been facing. The report says that Huawei saw a Tri-fold growth in the tablet segment in 2020 in India. Attractive price points and online Ads helped the company pull this kind of numbers.
