Besides Samsung and BOE, the Chinese Huizhou-based electronic giant, TCL is also a major player in the smartphone display industry, specifically under its display department, the TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology(CSOT) Corporation.

Last week, TCL CSOT was invited to attend the SID Display Week 2022 Trade Show in San Jose, California, where the company showcased its flagship display products and advanced technologies. The company was even nominated as the Best Large Booth of the 2022 I-Zone (Innovation Zone) awards. Here are some first looks at what the company unveiled at the event.

Mini-LEDs

TCL introduced its 34-inch WQHD R1500 curved Mini LED display designed for e-sports which offers a 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio, a 165Hz high refresh rate and a fast-responding HVA screen with a smaller halo. The display is compatible with different variable refresh rate technologies that provide an undistorted, smooth and clear PC gaming experience. 

Leveraging on TCL‘s advanced algorithms, the display meets both the VESA Display HDR 1400 certification and FreeSync Premium Pro certification requirements. It delivers the best light and dark contrast and dynamic rendering meeting the requirements of e-sports players and specialized users for visual display.

The company also showcased its enormous 75-inch 8K 4Mask 1G1D Mini LED screen that trails on TCL’s latest and superior 8K 1G1D technology. Comparing with the difficult 8K TFT-LCD backplane 4 mask manufacturing process, this new mini LED screen significantly improves processing capacity while ensuring perfect image quality. With TCL‘s original glass-based Mini LED backlight with ultra-high individual zones controlled by a local dimming method, the brand claims the screen offers excellent image performance comparable to an OLED.

Foldables

On the foldables front, TCL has also made several industry-leading strides with their 8-inch 360 degrees folding display panel, which was earlier revealed during CES 2022. The display utilises TCL’s Pol-less technology integrating the leading technology of foldable screens with a 360 degree stress-free self-compensating hinge. When folded, it can be an easy-carry phone for capturing dynamic information with one hand; when unfolded, the uninterrupted 8-inch OLED display provides a perfect big-screen video or mobile gaming experience.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality headsets require high resolutions to provide an immersive experience, and TCL knows it quite well. Which is why the company has unveiled its new 1764 PPI Real RGB LCD-VR panel which boasts higher pixel density than other competing VR LCD screens. It boasts a 90/120Hz smooth refresh rate with fast Liquid Crystal technology that eliminates the door-screen effect and vertigo common in existing VR products. 

The 1512 PPI LCD-VR panel, TCL‘s first VR product which made its debut in 2021, and also comes with variable refresh rates was also announced by the company at SID 2022 to go into mass production this year, as an industry statement for TCL‘s industry-leading advantages in the VR space.

Recently TCL’s CSOT Department made a revolutionary display breakthrough for smartphones as the company has successfully developed ultra-thin active high privacy display technology. The technology is a mouthful to read but the science behind it is rather quite interesting.

Conventionally, those privacy screen protectors you currently see in the market utilise low refraction highly reflective material to ensure that the confidential content you are reading is protected from the surrounding people. However, there is one caveat to the current conventional privacy screen protectors on the market currently which is that it only reduces the visibility of the screen at certain angles, and at some angles, the content although difficult to read is still legible to the naked eye if someone were standing near to you.

This is because currently there are no inherent electronics inside your privacy screen protector, it is only a passive technology. TCL aims to solve the problem with active technology by instead changing the screen, instead of the screen protector. TCL aims to make the screen itself to be an active high privacy display.

Not only does the active privacy display boast better privacy-focused reflective angular efficiency compared to the passive privacy screen protectors, but also since the screen is utilising active technology, the display can change privacy modes with a simple click.

TCL has illustrated the technology as shown where the 13-inch laptop screen can change from a privacy screen to a normal screen instantaneously without changing the laptop’s orientation or viewing angle.

Currently, TCL has proudly exclaimed that its CSOT Display department has successfully developed the display technology for smartphones. The company is proud that with its team of engineers, it has achieved to produce an ultra-thin active high privacy 6.58-inch smartphone display.

At a 45 degree angle with privacy mode turned on, the nearest side-looker will not able to see your screen as with the display’s electronic configuration and chemical properties, the screen shall only let through 1.12% of the display’s light through to the side-looker. Despite all the technology crammed into the panel, this high privacy active smartphone display comes in at only 0.1mm thicker than your conventional smartphone AMOLED screen. 

TCL mentions that the technology is currently at the end of its prototype testing phase, and the company is looking start production of these high privacy active displays very soon once it is ready.

TCL Huaxing today announced the development of 75-inch 8K 265Hz a-Si 4Mask 1G1D display technology for TV.

The company had last year premiered its first generation of 8K 1G1D technology but the new 2021 tech is a new milestone in terms of image quality, refresh rate, and manufacturing process.

Reports say that the new generation 8K 1G1D technology adopts a high-throughput H-HVA technology, 4Mask technology, and is equipped with unique HCC charging compensation technology to achieve a super-fluid 265Hz 8K 1G1D display (via IT Home).

Typical 8K TVs come with 120Hz displays so the refresh rate of 265Hz is a huge leap. It is in fact the highest in the industry.

Further, the TCL Huaxing large-size technology development team has further refined the pixel architecture design, and the H-HVA transmittance has increased by 10% year-on-year. This is based on the first-gen 8K 1G1D technology.

Last but not least, the second-generation 8K 1G1D technology is also equipped with a unique HCC row variable charging technology. This is paired with a high-drive GOA and compensation circuit design that makes use of 8K CSPI in-screen high-speed transmission technology. All this increases the transmission frequency by over 7.5 times.

Along with this, TCL also announced the world’s first 85-inch 8K 120Hz 1G1D high-end LCD display based on IGZO technology at the World Display Industry Conference 2021. This one has a contrast ratio of over 5000:1 and its power consumption is 30% lower than that of similar products with the same specifications.
