The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is the first-ever smartphone with a Retractable Portrait Lens. The Phantom X2 Pro which was announced by Tecno in January this year, has now undergone the JerryRigEverything durability tests. The results from the grueling stress tests on the premium Tecno smartphone are however not flattering.

JerryRigEverything has become a gold standard for determining the durability of any smartphone. It helps to shed off all the hype about a device and provides a barebone assessment. The conclusion from the durability tests for the Phantom X2 Pro may indicate that the smartphone’s supposedly ground-breaking design may be a ruse. The JerryRigEverything host, Zach Nelson noted that the portrait photography use-case of the smartphone requires a secondary depth-sensing camera. This was also indicated in the phone’s UI. In addition, the motor that moves the retractable lens was observed to be easily inhibited by a human finger.

The Phantom X2 Pro rear panel, made from 48% reclaimed ocean plastic was discovered to easily attract sticky materials. The smartphone is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset. The X2 Pro comes with a Gorilla Glass Victus screen and a metallic mid-frame. These enabled the Phantom X2 Pro to come unscathed in the scratch, bend, and burn tests.

The full result of the JerryRigEverything teardown of the X2 Pro is still pending at this time. The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is priced at $549 and is signposted by its 50MP main camera.

Tecno unveiled the Phantom X2 Pro smartphone in January 2022. PBKreviews takes us on a journey inside the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro with their latest teardown video. This unique smartphone is known for its retractable telephoto/portrait lens, and now we can get a closer look at its inner workings. 

The video starts by removing the plastic back cover and 17 screws, giving us a glimpse of the cameras and telephoto module. The recycled fiber-plastic back cover is flexible, as shown in the video. As we continue, the mainboard is freed up, revealing the three rear cameras, proximity sensor, LED flash, chipset, RAM, and storage. The NFC antenna surrounds the camera system and the quad-LED flash. The video showcases the protruding portrait lens, which is quite an interesting mechanism. 

The graphite film is then peeled off, which is used to dissipate the heat inside the device. The battery doesn’t come with pull tabs, so a few drops of isopropyl alcohol are used in the video to remove it from the device. The speaker assembly at the bottom is also shown. The video reveals a thin copper vapor chamber below the battery section, which is used to regulate the temperature of the device. The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro earns a combined 4.5/10 repairability score by PBKreviews.

This 5G smartphone boasts a 6.8-inch curved-edge FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, in-screen fingerprint sensor, and is powered by the Dimensity 9000. It features a 32-megapixel selfie camera, 50-megapixel primary camera, 50-megapixel portrait camera with retractable lens, and 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens on the back. The device comes with 256GB UFS 3.1 storage and 12GB LPDDR5 RAM, and is pre-installed with HiOS 12, based on the Android 12 operating system.

The Tecno Phantom X2 series went official in December. The vanilla model made its way to India earlier this month. Now, the pro model has debuted in the country as well.

The pro variant is up for pre-order on Amazon India starting today (January 17). It will start shipping to customers on January 24 when it will be officially released.

The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro arrives in a single 12GB + 256GB memory configuration in India. It is priced at ₹49,999. You can check out the pre-order benefits here.

Buyers can purchase the device in either Stardust Grey or Mars Orange color options. The former features a glass panel on the rear, while the latter has a back panel made of recycled plastic.

The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro comes powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset paired with LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. It boots HiOS 12.0 based on Android 12.

The main highlight of the handset is its 50MP Samsung JN1 retractable portrait camera, which supports 2.5x zoom and has an f/1.49 aperture lens. Further, there’s a 50MP Samsung GNV primary camera and a 13MP Samsung 3L6 ultra-wide camera with support for macro vision.

All the aforementioned cameras support autofocus but lack OIS. On the front, there’s a 32MP selfie camera.

The phone is built around a 6.8-inch centered punch-hole curved AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels (FHD+), a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 360Hz touch sampling rate. After the launch, a lot of people are wondering which of these phones is the very best to get and which one provides the highest value for money. Should you save some money for the vanilla version or it is worth spending more for the Pro variant? It is not a disappointing display, but it is not a flagship panel. It is pretty good thanks to its deep blacks and vivid colors typical of OLED display, and it is very smooth thanks to its high refresh rate. Unfortunately, these phones are not equipped with stereo speakers and they do not have an audio jack, but they support FM radio.

Hardware/Software

The Tecno Phantom X2 and the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro are powered by the same chipset: the Dimensity 9000, which is the flagship chipset by MediaTek of 2022. The SoC is actually at the same performance level as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It is built with a 4 nm production process and it has an octa-core architecture composed of a Cortex X2 CPU running at a max frequency of 3.05 GHz, three Cortex A710 CPUs running at 2.85 GHz, four Cortex A510 CPUs running at 1.8 GHz, and a Mali G710 MC10 GPU. Both phones come with 256 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. The only difference in the hardware department is the quantity of RAM: the vanilla version has just 8 GB of RAM, while the Pro variant has 12 GB, which is the reason why it wins the hardware comparison. The operating system installed on these phones is Android 12, customized by HiOS 12.

Camera

The most important difference and the only big difference between the Tecno Phantom X2 and the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is the camera setup. The vanilla version is just a midrange camera phone, while the Pro is a high-end camera phone. On the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro, you can find a triple rear camera composed of a 50 MP main shooter, a 50 MP telephoto lens with 2.5x optical zoom, and a 13 MP ultrawide lens. The vanilla version has a 64 MP main camera with OIS, a 13 MP ultrawide shooter, and a useless 2 MP depth sensor. As you can see, there is a huge difference between these two camera departments. Both phones are equipped with a 32 MP selfie shooter.

Battery

The battery capacity does not change: the phones feature a 5160 mAh battery with 45W fast charging; even the charging speeds are the same.

The Pro and vanilla models differ in the camera department, but the rest of their specs are identical. Now that the Phantom X2 Pro 5G has been treated in India, it may debut there by the end of this month.

Shown above is the first teaser of the Phantom X2 Pro. As can be seen, the major attraction of the device is that it is equipped with the world’s first retractable 50-megapixel portrait camera. The Tecno Phantom X2 and Phantom X2 Pro smartphones are expected to get up to Android 14 updates. The two flagships were released earlier this month but both came with Android 12 out of the box. Now the company seems to ramp up the profile of both smartphones with its plans for their OS upgrades.

The Phantom X2 lineup is guaranteed to get Android 13 and Android 14 updates, while a decision on Android 15 has not been made. Tecno says it will make a decision on Android 15 when Google seeds the final release of the software.

As of this time, there are no clear timelines for the updates to the Phantom X2 series. It is however expected that the Android 13 update should roll in sooner rather than later. This could further raise the profile of the Tecno Phantom X2 pair of smartphones.

Tecno has also pledged to ensure at least three years of maximum software support for the two models. That means that the Phantom X2 series will enjoy support up to 2025 at least.

As part of scaling up availability outside its home market, Tecno plans to make the Phantom X2 series available in other markets. Some of the countries include India, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and Nigeria. Tecno currently services up to 70 markets globally and it has a large focus on emerging markets. Thus, the Phantom X2 lineup will first berth in the selected countries before spreading to other countries/ regions.

The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is a top-notch offer by Tecno. It has an eye-catching unibody design with ergonomic considerations. It is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC and it features a retractable portrait camera system.

The Phantom X2 Pro has a 6.80-inch AMOLED screen with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. Its large 5160mAh battery provides sufficient juice for the device for extended periods. The Phantom X2, on the other hand, comes with some decent features and capabilities.

The brand has now shared a post teasing the impending launch of the Tecno Phantom X2 Series in India. The brand promotes the smartphones, claiming that they feature the world’s first 50MP retractable portrait camera, a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 5G processor, Unibody Double-Covered design, and more.
