<p>The Tensor G4 was released with the Pixel 9 series in August. The tech community, including us at Gizmochina, was expecting some significant improvements over last year’s Tensor G3, but the benchmark results surprised us.</p>

<p>The Google Tensor G4 lags behind the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 by a good margin on benchmarks (see the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/09/06/tensor-g4-vs-snapdragon-8-gen-3-benchmarks-and-key-differences/" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tensor G4 vs. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3</a> comparison).</p>

<p>According to Google, the new Tensor chip offers 20% faster web browsing, 17% faster app launching, and up to 20% improved power efficiency. But how does it perform on benchmarks against the Tensor G3? And is it worth spending extra cash for Tensor G4? Let’s compare the two chips to find the answer.</p>

<p>Let’s begin our comparison with the spec sheet:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table is-style-regular" style="font-size:13px"><table class="has-white-color has-text-color has-background" style="background-color:#34455b"><thead><tr><th></th><th>Tensor G4</th><th>Tensor G3</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Release Date</strong></td><td>August 2024</td><td>October 2023</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Process Node</strong></td><td>4nm</td><td>4nm</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Manufacturer</strong></td><td>Samsung</td><td>Samsung</td></tr><tr><td><strong>CPU Cores</strong></td><td>8</td><td>9</td></tr><tr><td><strong>CPU Architecture</strong></td><td>1 x Cortex-X4 @ 3.10 GHz<br>3 x Cortex-A720 @ 2.60 GHz<br>4 x Cortex-A520 @ 1.92 GHz</td><td>1 x Cortex-X3 @ 2.91 GHz<br>4 x Cortex-A715 @ 2.37 GHz<br>4 x Cortex-A510 @ 1.70 GHz</td></tr><tr><td><strong>GPU</strong></td><td>Arm Mali-G715 MC7<br>(940 MHz)</td><td>Arm Mali-G715 MC7<br>(890 MHz)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Machine Learning</strong></td><td>3rd-gen Tensor Processing Unit</td><td>3rd-gen Tensor Processing Unit</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Memory</strong></td><td>LPDDR5X</td><td>LPDDR5X</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Storage</strong></td><td>UFS 3.1, UFS 4.0</td><td>UFS 3.1, UFS 4.0</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Media Decode</strong></td><td>H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1</td><td>H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Modem</strong></td><td>Exynos 5400 5G modem<br>Downlink: 14.79 Gbps</td><td>Exynos 5300i modem<br>Downlink: 10 Gbps</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Connectivity</strong></td><td>Wi-Fi 7<br>Bluetooth 5.3<br>Satellite connectivity</td><td>Wi-Fi 7<br>Bluetooth 5.3</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<h2>Tensor G4 vs Tensor G3: Benchmarks</h2>

<p><em>[<strong>Note:</strong> For testing on different benchmarks, we picked the Pixel 9 Pro XL (powered by the Tensor G4) and the Pixel 8 Pro (powered by the Tensor G3).] </em></p>

<h3>[Geekbench 6]</h3>

<p>It’s a CPU-centric test that runs a device through a series of computation workloads, including compression (text &amp; images), encryption, physics simulations, rendering, ray tracing, and speech recognition.</p>

<p>The benchmarking platform outputs single-core and multi-core results. The single-core score shows the device/chip capability when a single core is used, and the multi-core score tells the CPU performance when multiple cores are at work.</p>

<div><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-Geekbench-6-1024x683.png?x10805" class="td-modal-image"><figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-Geekbench-6-1024x683.png?x10805" alt="Tensor G4 vs Tensor G3 - Geekbench 6" class="wp-image-649927" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-Geekbench-6-1024x683.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-Geekbench-6-300x200.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-Geekbench-6-768x512.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-Geekbench-6-696x464.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-Geekbench-6-1068x712.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-Geekbench-6-630x420.png 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-Geekbench-6.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></a></div>

<p>The latest Tensor G4 manages to pull off higher points in both single-core and multi-core tests than last year’s Tensor G3. However, the difference is not significant. Let’s look at some more benchmarks for better understanding.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table is-style-regular"><table class="has-background" style="background-color:#fbe7e7"><thead><tr><th></th><th>Tensor G4</th><th>Tensor G3</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Single Core</strong></td><td>1,967</td><td>1,772</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Multi Core</strong></td><td>4,697</td><td>4,485</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<h3>[AnTuTu 10]</h3>

<p>AnTuTu is a popular benchmarking platform that measures the CPU, GPU, memory, and UX performance of devices.</p>

<div><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-AnTuTu-10-1024x683.png?x10805" class="td-modal-image"><figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-AnTuTu-10-1024x683.png?x10805" alt="Tensor G4 vs Tensor G3 - AnTuTu 10" class="wp-image-649926" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-AnTuTu-10-1024x683.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-AnTuTu-10-300x200.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-AnTuTu-10-768x512.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-AnTuTu-10-696x464.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-AnTuTu-10-1068x712.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-AnTuTu-10-630x420.png 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tensor-G4-vs-Tensor-G3-AnTuTu-10.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></a></div>

<p>It’s quite surprising to see the Tensor G3 leading the CPU chart on AuTuTu 10, that too, by a significant margin. While GPU, memory, and UX scores went in favor of Tensor G4.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table is-style-regular"><table class="has-background" style="background-color:#fbe7e7"><thead><tr><th></th><th>Tensor G4</th><th>Tensor G3</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>CPU</strong></td><td>1,86,608</td><td>2,70,092</td></tr><tr><td><strong>GPU</strong></td><td>4,48,675</td><td>4,01,268</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Memory</strong></td><td>1,69,176</td><td>1,42,784</td></tr><tr><td><strong>UX</strong></td><td>1,90,787</td><td>1,84,212</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Total Score</strong></td><td>9,95,246</td><td>9,98,356</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p>Before you start thinking a lot about these benchmarking results, let me quickly remind you that these scores do not reflect real-time performance, as it depends on many other factors, such as software optimizations, devices, and usage patterns.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Tensor G4 vs Tensor G3: Key Differences</h2>

<p>Samsung has manufactured the Tensor G4 and Tensor G3 using its 4 nm process node. However, the Tensor G4 has been manufactured using a newer technology, which translates to better efficiency.</p>

<p>The Tensor G3 has nine CPU cores, while the Tensor G4 has one less CPU core. It doesn’t mean lower performance or efficiency on the latest Tensor chip as it has high-performance and more efficient cores.</p>

<p>The latest Tensor chip has one Cortex-X4 prime core clocked at 3.1 GHz (vs. Cortex-X3 @ 2.91 GHz). The four Cortex-A720 performance cores also run at a higher clock speed than the Cortex-A715 in the Tensor G3. The remaining Cortex-A520 cores are more power-efficient than Cortex-A510 in Tensor G3.</p>

<p>Both chips have the same 7-core Mali-G715 GPU, although the newer chip runs at a higher clock frequency for better peak performance.</p>

<p>Tensor G4 doesn’t bring a big performance leap over last year’s Tensor G3, and Google is okay with it. Tensor chips have never been about blazing-fast performance; they’re more about unique features. “<strong><em>When we are designing the chip, we’re not designing it for speeds and feats. We’re not designing it to beat some specific benchmark that’s out there. We’re designing it to meet our use cases,</em></strong>” said Soniya Jobanputra, a key member of Google’s Pixel product management team.</p>

<p>The focus with Tensor G4 was not to beat benchmarks but to improve the speed and efficiency of opening apps. “<strong><em>We knew that we had a pain point with opening apps. And so as we built G4, we really focused on, okay, what do we need to do to make sure that experience is better for users,</em></strong>” Jobanputra added.</p>

<p>Besides CPU and GPU performance, some key changes have been made to improve connectivity. Tensor G4 has a new Exynos 5400 modem, which offers a 50% higher peak download speed. The new chip also supports satellite connectivity, which will be enabled when upgrading to Android 15, which is lacking on Tensor G3.</p>

<h2>Tensor G4 vs Tensor G3: Verdict</h2>

<p>Even though Tensor G4 has the latest ARM CPU cores, performance has not gone up drastically compared to last year’s Tensor G3. The GPU is unchanged, but it now runs at a higher clock frequency that might offer better peak performance, but again, it’s not a big deal.</p>

<p>On benchmarks, the Tensor G4 can’t even match the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, released in 2022. So, Google seems a generation behind the latest chips from Qualcomm and Apple as far as performance is concerned. However, Tensor chips enable AI features you wouldn’t find on non-Pixel devices.</p>

<p>The bottom line is Tensor G4 is not a major upgrade over Tensor G3. However, we see big improvements coming next year, as Google will <a href="https://www.androidauthority.com/tsmc-tensor-g5-proof-pixel-10-3445056/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reportedly</a> switch to TSMC for the manufacturing of Tensor G5 using its cutting-edge technology.</p>

This marks it as the first smartphone processor capable of handling AV1 video. Impressively, the processor can encode video at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second (FPS).</p>

<p>For those unaware, AV1 is a newer video compression standard that promises better quality and compression compared to the older H.264 codec.</p>

<p>Tech sleuth <a href="https://twitter.com/MishaalRahman/status/1761072776788516903?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1761072776788516903%7Ctwgr%5Ef0a9876815a769576f68ed564c03f70139735d73%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwccftech.com%2Fgoogle-tensor-g3-first-smartphone-soc-to-support-av1-encoding-4k-60fps%2F" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mishaal Rahman</a> shared a code snippet confirming the processor&#8217;s AV1 support up to 4K resolution and 60FPS. This puts the Tensor G3 ahead of competitors like Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Samsung in terms of this specific encoding capability.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The Tensor G3 is the first smartphone SoC to support hardware-accelerated AV1 encoding. It supports AV1 encoding at up to 4K60. No application (including the Pixel Camera app) takes advantage of this, though, likely due to a lack of platform support.<br><br>I know this technically… <a href="https://t.co/T2EiSCYLKP">pic.twitter.com/T2EiSCYLKP</a></p>&mdash; Mishaal Rahman (@MishaalRahman) <a href="https://twitter.com/MishaalRahman/status/1761072776788516903?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 23, 2024</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
</div></figure>

<p>However, there&#8217;s a catch — despite the Tensor G3&#8217;s AV1 support, there are currently no widely used applications, including Google&#8217;s own Pixel Camera app, that can utilize this feature for encoding at 4K 60FPS.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Without software support, users won&#8217;t immediately benefit from this hardware capability.</p>

<p>So the absence of AV1 encoding support in other chipsets may also be due to compatibility concerns.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The H.264 format remains widely used and supported codec currently, ensuring videos can be easily viewed across different devices. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Google-Pixel-8-benchmark-results-are-quite-disappointing-1024x536.webp?x10805" alt="Google Tensor G3 AV1 codec support" /></figure></div>

<p>However, it&#8217;s important to note that Apple&#8217;s A17 Pro chip, used in the iPhone 15 Pro models, also supports AV1 decoding but not encoding.</p>

<p>Google could possibly introduce AV1 encoding support in future Tensor chip iterations and update its camera app to leverage this feature.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, once applications start supporting AV1 encoding at 4K 60FPS, the Tensor G3&#8217;s unique capability remains more of a technical curiosity than a practical advantage for users.</p>

<p>Google recently unveiled its new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro models at an event. These flagship devices stand out with their features, but the spotlight for tech enthusiasts was on the Tensor G3 processor that powers the Pixel series. For those who might not know, the Tensor G3 is Google&#8217;s third-generation custom-designed mobile processor. </p>

<p>This processor is built on a 4nm manufacturing process, making it more efficient and powerful than its predecessors. However, recent information suggests that the G3 was originally intended to be even more powerful than it currently is. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Tensor G3: Not the Fastest Chip, But Still Very Powerful</strong></h2>

<p>Tensor G3 was supposed to be more powerful than what it currently is. Early leaks suggested that it would have higher peak frequencies for the CPU cores. However, Google made a surprising change before release and lowered the frequencies. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="538" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-pixel-8-series-tensor-g3-nerfed-1024x538.jpg?x10805" alt="Google Tensor G3" class="wp-image-574980" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-pixel-8-series-tensor-g3-nerfed-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-pixel-8-series-tensor-g3-nerfed-300x158.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-pixel-8-series-tensor-g3-nerfed-768x403.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-pixel-8-series-tensor-g3-nerfed-1536x806.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-pixel-8-series-tensor-g3-nerfed-696x365.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-pixel-8-series-tensor-g3-nerfed-1068x561.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-pixel-8-series-tensor-g3-nerfed-800x420.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-pixel-8-series-tensor-g3-nerfed.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The reason for this change is unclear. Some speculate that Google was concerned about battery life, while others believe that there may have been a hardware bug that prevented the higher frequencies from being used reliably.</p>

<p>Despite the lower frequencies, the Tensor G3 is still a very powerful chip. It offers significant performance improvements over the Tensor G2, especially in terms of AI processing. However, it&#8217;s worth noting that it doesn&#8217;t deliver the same level of raw performance as some of the other flagship chips on the market, such as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.</p>

<p>Compared to this nona-core architecture, the Qualcomm <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/11/16/qualcomm-snapdragon-8-gen-2-launched/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Snapdragon 8 Gen 2</a> SoC features an octa-core CPU with 1x Cortex-X3 (3.2 GHz), 2x Cortex-A715 (2.8 GHz), 2x Cortex-A710 (2.8 GHz), and 3x Cortex-A510 (2.00 GHz).</p>

<p>But despite having one extra core, the Tensor G3 did not perform as well as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. In fact, its performance was closer to last year&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/05/20/qualcomm-unveils-snapdragon-8-gen-1-plus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1</a> than to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.</p>

<p>As we previously <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/10/02/pixel-8-pro-tensor-g3-run-geekbench/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a>, in Geekbench 6, the Tensor G3 scored 1,760 in the single-core test and 4,442 in the multi-core test. This is a significantly lower score than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which has an average score of 1,976 and 5,149, respectively (<em>via Notebookcheck)</em>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Pixel-8-Pro-Geekbench-6-786x1024.jpg?x10805" alt="" /></figure></div>

<p>Likewise, in the 3D Mark Wild Life Stress test, the Pixel 8 achieved a best loop score of 8,216 and a lowest loop score of 4,316, with a very low stability of just 52.5%. The Pixel 8 Pro achieved a best loop score of 8,572 and a lowest loop score of 5,029, with slightly better stability at 58.7%. These are not pretty results, especially when compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max (A17 Pro chip) and Galaxy S23 Ultra (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip), which returned stability results of 78.9% and 69%, respectively.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Google-Tensor-G3-3D-Mark-Wild-Life-Stress-Test.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-572677" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Google-Tensor-G3-3D-Mark-Wild-Life-Stress-Test.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Google-Tensor-G3-3D-Mark-Wild-Life-Stress-Test-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Google-Tensor-G3-3D-Mark-Wild-Life-Stress-Test-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Google-Tensor-G3-3D-Mark-Wild-Life-Stress-Test-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Google-Tensor-G3-3D-Mark-Wild-Life-Stress-Test-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Image Credit: <a href="https://twitter.com/Tech_Reve/status/1709423864097480930" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Tech_Reve)</a></figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The reason for the Tensor G3&#8217;s disappointing performance is likely due to Samsung&#8217;s fabrication process. Samsung&#8217;s own Exynos chips have been less powerful than the competition because of their fabrication technology, and it seems like Google&#8217;s new chip is having the same problem.</p>

<p>All things considered, Pixel 8&#8217;s Tensor G3 chip feels like a letdown. It&#8217;s not as powerful as its competitors, and it has stability issues. While it still offers good enough performance for everyday use, don&#8217;t expect it to match the performance of its rivals.</p>

<h2>Google&#8217;s Tensor G4 may have minor upgrades over Tensor G3</h2>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a> is collaborating with Samsung&#8217;s System LSI department to develop the Tensor G4 chip, codenamed Zuma Pro. According to a report by Android Authority, this chip is closely based on Samsung&#8217;s Exynos 2400 and is expected to deliver slightly improved performance compared to its predecessor, the nine-core Tensor G3 chip.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tensor-g3/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tensor G3</a> chip codenamed Zuma is being developed with input from Samsung&#8217;s Exynos 2300 chip, which has not been released yet. During the development phase, the G3 chip is being tested on a &#8220;Ripcurrent&#8221; board, while the G4 chip utilizes a &#8220;Ripcurrent Pro&#8221; board.</p>

<p>In 2025, Google aims to launch the Pixel 10 smartphone featuring the fully custom-designed <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tensor-g5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tensor G5</a> chip. A significant shift in the manufacturing process involves <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/07/09/google-tsmc-first-custom-pixel-chip-tensor-g5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moving from Samsung to TSMC for producing the Tensor G5 chip</a>. This marks Google&#8217;s ambitious step toward creating a unique chip for its future devices.</p>

<p>According to past reports, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/09/08/google-reveals-pixel-8-pro-official-ad/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google is set to release</a> the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-8/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pixel 8</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-8-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pixel 8 Pro</a> smartphones, featuring the Tensor G3 chip, on October 4, 2023. These phones will boast improved designs and upgraded cameras.</p>

<p>Both models will include larger ISOCELL GN2 main camera sensors. Additionally, the Pixel 8 Pro will have a 64MP ultra-wide-angle camera, while the Pixel 8 will feature a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera. The Pixel 8 Pro is reported to include a 48MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom capabilities.</p>

<p>The upcoming Google Pixel 8 series is scheduled for release on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/09/08/google-pixel-8-series-to-launch-in-india-pre-orders-begin-october-5-on-flipkart/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">October 4th</a> as part of the annual &#8216;Made by Google&#8217; event. As is customary, most of the specifications and features of these smartphones have already been disclosed through leaks. While the Pixel 8 currently appears to lack any major upgrades beyond some noteworthy software features, a recent report has piqued our curiosity about this upcoming smartphone.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="562" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/google-tensor-featured.png?x10805" alt="Tensor" class="wp-image-535302" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/google-tensor-featured.png 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/google-tensor-featured-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/google-tensor-featured-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/google-tensor-featured-696x391.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/google-tensor-featured-747x420.png 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p>As per a recent tweet by Revegnus, the new Tensor G3 chip inside the Pixel 8 series will incorporate FO-WLP (Fan-out wafer-level packaging) packaging, which is expected to reduce heat generation and increase power efficiency. Companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek already use this technology to improve efficiency, and graphics performance and help keep their chips cooler. This will be the first time that Samsung Foundaries, who make the Tensor G3 chips for Google will be implementing this tech.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Pixel-8-Pro-teaser-1024x576-1.jpg?x10805" alt="Google Pixel 8 Pro" class="wp-image-565089" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Pixel-8-Pro-teaser-1024x576-1.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Pixel-8-Pro-teaser-1024x576-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Pixel-8-Pro-teaser-1024x576-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Pixel-8-Pro-teaser-1024x576-1-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Pixel-8-Pro-teaser-1024x576-1-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Although the Tensor G3 <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/06/05/google-tensor-g3-geekbench/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">may not set any performance records</a>, its potential to run at lower temperatures compared to the G2 could become a significant selling point for the Pixel 8 series. This is especially relevant since the Pixel 7 has faced challenges in maintaining acceptable temperature levels during both demanding and routine tasks.</p>

<p>However, there are rumors suggesting that Google intends to break free from its reliance on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/05/08/google-pixel-tensor-chips-tsmc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reports</a> have surfaced, indicating that the company is contemplating the complete in-house design and manufacturing of its chips, potentially utilizing <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TSMC</a>&#8216;s 4nm process.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve all heard the leaks and rumors about the Pixel 8 series, especially the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/12/google-pixel-8-audio-magic-eraser/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pixel 8</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/21/google-pixel-8-esim/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pixel 8 Pro</a>. The lineup is also expected to include the Pixel 8a, but there has been very little information about it until now. However, a device with the model name &#8220;Google Akita&#8221; has recently <a href="https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/21622859" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">appeared</a> on Geekbench, and it is believed to be the Pixel 8a.</p>

<h2><strong>Google Pixel 8a appears on Geekbench</strong></h2>

<p>The Geekbench listing for the Akita smartphone reveals that it will be powered by an underclocked version of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/06/04/google-pixel-8-tensor-g3-processor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tensor G3 </a>chipset and the Mali-G715 GPU. It will also have up to 8GB of RAM and boot <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-14/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Android 14 </a>out of the box. The smartphone scored 1,218 and 3,175 points in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="383" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Pixel-8a-Akita-on-Geekbench-5.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-561046" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Pixel-8a-Akita-on-Geekbench-5.jpg 383w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Pixel-8a-Akita-on-Geekbench-5-192x300.jpg 192w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Pixel-8a-Akita-on-Geekbench-5-268x420.jpg 268w" sizes="(max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px" /></figure></div>

<p>The details of the Pixel 8a are still under wraps. In December 2022, <a href="https://www.androidauthority.com/google-pixel-8a-3353772/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Android Authority</a> reported that the device is codenamed &#8220;Akita,&#8221; continuing <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google&#8217;s </a>animal-inspired naming convention for Pixels. However, it is not yet clear if the Pixel 8a will be released.</p>

<p>According to sources, Google may only release a new A-series smartphone model every two years. As the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/17/google-pixel-7a-self-repair/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Pixel 7a</a> is released in 2023, then the next A-series phone could be released in 2025. By then, it would be the Pixel 9a, or <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a> may choose to rebrand the series by removing the number.</p>

<p>For now, the Pixel 7a is a great option for those who want a Pixel experience on a budget. It has a 6.1-inch OLED display with Full HD+ resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, and a 90Hz refresh rate. It is powered by Google&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tensor-g2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tensor G2</a> chipset with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The phone also has a 64MP dual-camera system, a 13MP selfie camera, stereo speakers, a 3.5mm audio jack, a 4,385mAh battery, and support for 18W wired charging and wireless charging.</p>

<p>Based on the historical pattern of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google">Google&#8217;s</a> Pixel smartphone launches, it seems likely that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will be unveiled during the month of October this year. Earlier this month, <em>Android Authority </em>released a report to reveal the camera specifications of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-8/">Pixel 8</a> and Pixel 8 Pro. In a new report, the same publication leaked the display specifications of the Pixel 8 duo.</p>

<h2><strong>Google Pixel 8 series display specifications (rumored)</strong></h2>

<div class="wp-block-image is-style-default"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Google-Pixel-8-Pixel-8-Pro-display-specs-leak-1024x576.png?x10805" alt="Google Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro display specs leak" class="wp-image-545189" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Google-Pixel-8-Pixel-8-Pro-display-specs-leak-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Google-Pixel-8-Pixel-8-Pro-display-specs-leak-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Google-Pixel-8-Pixel-8-Pro-display-specs-leak-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Google-Pixel-8-Pixel-8-Pro-display-specs-leak-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Google-Pixel-8-Pixel-8-Pro-display-specs-leak-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Google-Pixel-8-Pixel-8-Pro-display-specs-leak-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Google-Pixel-8-Pixel-8-Pro-display-specs-leak.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Google Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro display specs leak by Android Authority</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The leak reveals that the Pixel 8 will be smaller than the Pixel 8’s 6.3-inch screen. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-8-pro/">Pixel 8 Pro</a>, on the other hand, will have a 6.7-inch display like the Pixel 7 Pro. However, while the Pixel 7 Pro came with a curved-edge screen, its successor will have a flat screen. The report further states that the display design of the Pixel 8 series exhibits a slightly less square shape compared to its predecessors, with corners that are slightly more rounded.</p>

<p>To recall, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-7">Pixel 7’s</a> flat 6.3-inch OLED panel offered a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a 90Hz refresh rate, and 417ppi pixel density. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-7-pro">Pixel 7 Pro</a> featured a 6.71-inch OLED curved-edge display that offers a Quad HD+ resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, and 512 ppi pixel density. Both displays support up to 1,000 nits of brightness.</p>

<p>As per the new report, the Pixel 8 will come with a 6.17-inch screen that will offer a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a higher refresh rate of 120 Hz, a 427 ppi pixel density, and up to 1,400 nits of brightness. For the Pixel 8, Google will be using displays supplied by Samsung and OLED, whereas the Pro model will have display panels from Samsung.</p>

<p>On the other hand, the Pixel 8 Pro has a 6.70-inch OLED that produces a Quad HD+ resolution of 1344 x 2992 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, a 490 ppi pixel density, and 1,600 nits of brightness. Read the following links to learn about other Pixel 8 series news.</p>

<p>While the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-pixel-8/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google Pixel 8</a> series launch is still a while away, there have already been a number of rumor and reports regarding the upcoming smartphones. The latest sighting hints at the performance of its new gen <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-tensor-g3/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tensor G3</a> chipset, and it does not seem to be as great as what was previously rumored.</p>

<h4>Google Tensor G3 chip performance still falls behind Qualcomm &amp; Apple</h4>

<p>Just recently, we had covered a report that hinted at the Search Engine giant&#8217;s new Tensor G3 offering notable <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/06/04/google-pixel-8-tensor-g3-processor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">performance upgrades </a>on the Pixel 8 series. These improvements were in the form of a new redesigned architecture and upgrades to the AI and machine learning capabilities. However, the sighting on the popular GeekBench platform shows that its performance overall is still underwhelming. Looking at the benchmark listing, we can see that the Tensor G3 managed to receive 1,186 points in the single core test and 3,809 points in the multi core tests.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Fx18nDIagAAXm2W.png?x10805" alt="Google" class="wp-image-541924" width="550" height="808" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Fx18nDIagAAXm2W.png 613w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Fx18nDIagAAXm2W-204x300.png 204w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Fx18nDIagAAXm2W-286x420.png 286w" sizes="(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px" /></figure></div>

<p>The GeekBench listing was shared by tipster <em><a href="https://twitter.com/Tech_Reve/status/1665624449390100480?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1665624449390100480%7Ctwgr%5Ef5ba5ee487cc7d07deb4ea396e3dc871a66cefc2%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thetechoutlook.com%2Fnews%2Fnew-release%2Fgadgets-release%2Fmobile%2Fnetizen-shares-tensor-g3-geekbench-5-performance-received-disappointing-reactions%2F" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Revegnus </a></em>who recently shared the specs of the upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/06/05/mediatek-dimensity-8300-specs-leak/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MediaTek Dimensity 8300 SoC</a>. Furthermore, the Tensor G3 offers a base frequency of 2.15GHz on its 9 cores. These 9 cores consists of 4 cores clocked at 2.15GHz, 4 cores on 3.45GHz, and 1 core that has a 3.02GHz clock speed. There are rumors that the Tensor G3 is based off of the Exynos 2200 SoC from Samsung.</p>

<p>If this news is true, it would seem that Google&#8217;s next gen chipset is still around 2 to 3 generations behind other chipsets from tech giants like Apple, MediaTek, and Qualcomm. The tipster himself claimed that this proves why Samsung Foundry is still not up to par. This is likely in comparison to the world&#8217;s largest contract chipmaker, TSMC. Keep in mind that synthetic benchmarks aren&#8217;t exactly a great indicator of real life performance and user experience and only offers us a glimpse of its actual capabilities. </p>

<p>Google is expanding its Pixel family, the company recently introduced the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-7a/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pixel 7a</a><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/05/10/google-pixel-7a-launches-tensor-g2-chip-price/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> at its I/O event</a>. The company is now preparing to release the Pixel 8 series. The new phones are eagerly awaited by Android enthusiasts, and they are expected to have a number of unique features, including the Tensor G3 processor. Recently, some details about the Pixel 8&#8217;s processor have been leaked. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Google Tensor G3: Everything You Need to Know</strong></h2>

<p>The upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/11/09/google-pixel-8-pro-codename-revealed/">Tensor G3 has a major upgrade</a> in its CPU block. It is completely redesigned and uses the latest 2022 ARMv9 cores. Google is moving away from the previous generation&#8217;s 4+2+2 core setup and adopting a unique nine-core configuration for the G3. This setup consists of four Cortex-A510s, four Cortex-A715s, and a single Cortex-X3. This is designed to provide a significant performance boost. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/google-pixel-8-tensor-g3-processor-2-1024x576.jpeg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-541758" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/google-pixel-8-tensor-g3-processor-2-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/google-pixel-8-tensor-g3-processor-2-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/google-pixel-8-tensor-g3-processor-2-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/google-pixel-8-tensor-g3-processor-2-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/google-pixel-8-tensor-g3-processor-2-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/google-pixel-8-tensor-g3-processor-2-747x420.jpeg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/google-pixel-8-tensor-g3-processor-2.jpeg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The chip also includes ARM&#8217;s advanced Memory Tagging Extensions, which are designed to help protect devices from memory-based attacks. Additionally, the Pixel 8 will only run 64-bit apps. Of course, Google&#8217;s surprises are not limited to these. The Tensor G3 in the Pixel 8 has a new graphics processor, the Arm Mali-G715. This is a 10-core processor, which is an improvement over previous models. The Pixel 8 could also be one of the first phones to offer ray-tracing capabilities. Google is clearly aiming for gaming and other graphics-intensive applications.</p>

<p>Artificial intelligence is a very popular topic these days, and it has found its way into the G3 processor. The Tensor Processing Unit is one of the defining features of Google&#8217;s custom chips, and the G3 has an enhanced version of it. This new TPU, codenamed &#8220;Rio,&#8221; is expected to deliver a major performance boost. This is a clear sign that Google is committed to AI and machine learning capabilities in its phones.</p>

<p>One of the most significant changes is the addition of a new digital signal processor (DSP). The DSP is responsible for handling common operations such as image and audio processing, and the new version is said to be more efficient, making the Pixel 8 faster and more power-efficient. Another major change is the addition of a new UFS controller. UFS stands for Universal Flash Storage, and it is the type of storage used in most smartphones. </p>

<p>The new UFS controller supports UFS 4.0 storage, which is the latest and fastest version of UFS. This means that the Pixel 8 will be able to read and write data to storage much faster than previous Pixel models. In addition to the new DSP and UFS controller, the Tensor G3 also includes a number of other improvements. These include a rearchitected CPU, advanced security features, and groundbreaking graphics capabilities.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google/">Google</a> Pixel 8 and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/pixel-8-pro/">Pixel 8 Pro</a> are expected to launch in October this year. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/03/15/google-pixel-8-pro-cad-renders-emerge-design-revealed-well-ahead-of-expected-october-launch/">CAD renders</a> of the Pro model, which appeared in March, gave the first look at its design. The images revealed that it will feature a new sensor aside from the triple camera unit and an LED flash in its rear-facing camera bar. According to a report by <em>91mobiles, </em>which cites tipster Wojciechowski as a source, the new sensor is nothing but a built-in thermometer that can be used to measure body temperature.</p>

<p>The report also carried a video that demonstrated how the Pixel 8 Pro can be used to measure body temperature. However, the video has been removed. It states that the thermometer available on the Pixel 8 Pro can also be used to measure the temperature of objects.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-thermometer-1024x576.png?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-538080" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-thermometer-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-thermometer-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-thermometer-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-thermometer-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-thermometer-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-thermometer-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-thermometer.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Google Pixel 8 Pro has built-in thermometer</figcaption></figure>

<p></p>

<p>As per the report, the thermometer that is placed just below the LED flash on the camera needs to be held very close to the forehead or skin. One needs to ensure that it does not touch the screen or that there are no accessories on the forehead or skin.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-measure-body-tempearture-702x1024.jpg?x10805" alt="Google Pixel 8 Pro measure body tempearture" class="wp-image-538081" width="702" height="1024" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-measure-body-tempearture-702x1024.jpg 702w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-measure-body-tempearture-206x300.jpg 206w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-measure-body-tempearture-768x1120.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-measure-body-tempearture-1053x1536.jpg 1053w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-measure-body-tempearture-696x1015.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-measure-body-tempearture-1068x1558.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-measure-body-tempearture-288x420.jpg 288w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Google-Pixel-8-Pro-measure-body-tempearture.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px" /><figcaption>Google Pixel 8 Pro can measure body temperature</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>After pressing the start button on the screen, one needs to move the phone towards the temple within five seconds. The measured temperature will show on the screen of the Pixel 8 Pro.</p>

<p>Rumors surrounding the Pixel 8 Pro have revealed that it will be equipped with a 6.7-inch flat OLED panel. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tensor-g3">Google Tensor G3</a> chipset, which is reportedly based on Samsung&#8217;s unannounced Exynos 2300 chipset, will power the Pixel 8 Pro. The rear camera setup of the phone will be headlined by Samsung’s ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor.&nbsp; It is a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/04/24/google-pixel-8-pro-feature-samsung-biggest-camera-sensor/">1/1.12-inch sensor</a> with a 50-megapixel resolution.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google </a>is gearing up to launch the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-pixel-8/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pixel 8</a> series later this year. The new flagship grade devices are expected to arrive with a new generation of Tensor chips. Although, a new report has revealed that these new chips could a modified version of chipsets from <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>.</p>

<p>For those unaware, Samsung had skipped its proprietary Exynos chips from its premium Galaxy S23 series this year in favor of Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. But now, a new rumor has suggested that the reportedly <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/07/11/galaxy-s23s-exynos-2300-variant-seemingly-axed-snapdragon-8-gen-2-edition-likely-to-release-in-all-markets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancelled Exynos 2300 </a>SoC might be taking on a new form. The Search Engine giant is apparently planning to use a modified version of the Exynos 2300 for its next generation of Tensor processor.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/hero-image.fill_.size_1248x702.v1665065449-1024x576.png?x10805" alt="Google" class="wp-image-524082" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/hero-image.fill_.size_1248x702.v1665065449-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/hero-image.fill_.size_1248x702.v1665065449-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/hero-image.fill_.size_1248x702.v1665065449-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/hero-image.fill_.size_1248x702.v1665065449-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/hero-image.fill_.size_1248x702.v1665065449-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/hero-image.fill_.size_1248x702.v1665065449-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/hero-image.fill_.size_1248x702.v1665065449.png 1248w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>In other words, it appears that Samsung has quietly been working on the Exynos 2300 despite not making it official. However, there are reports that Samsung&#8217;s semiconductor division is still working on a new flagship grade Exynos process codenamed Quadra. So, Quadra might be modified and used as a base for the Tensor 3 chipset. Based on a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/03/13/samsung-exynos-2300-specs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent leak</a>, the Exynos 2300 will feature a Cortex X3 prime core that has a 3.09GHz max clock speed, along with four Cortex A715 cores clocked at 2.65GHz and four efficiency Cortex A510 cores that clock in at 2.1GHz.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, this is all the information based on the recent rumors. Earlier reports had also hinted at the next gen Tensor chips being based off of Samsung&#8217;s 4nm process, so it is clear that both companies are working closely together for chip development. So stick around for more as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s been a few months since <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google">Google</a> launched its Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro flagship smartphones in the market, and now we are getting information about the upcoming Pixel 8 series smartphones.</p>

<p>Although the launch of the upcoming Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones is expected to happen in late 2023, a <a href="https://m.winfuture.de/news/132895">new report</a> from <em>WinFuture</em> has revealed some key details about the devices.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Google-Pixel-7-Series-1024x576.jpeg?x10805" alt="Google Pixel 7 Series" class="wp-image-494581" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Google-Pixel-7-Series-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Google-Pixel-7-Series-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Google-Pixel-7-Series-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Google-Pixel-7-Series-1536x864.jpeg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Google-Pixel-7-Series-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Google-Pixel-7-Series-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Google-Pixel-7-Series-747x420.jpeg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Google-Pixel-7-Series.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Google&#8217;s Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The report indicates that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-pixel-8">Pixel 8</a> is codenamed Shiba, while the Pixel 8 Pro is codename Husky. This naming convention appears to be in line with Google&#8217;s Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, which are codenamed Panther and Cheetah, respectively.</p>

<p>It also comes at a time when there are reports making rounds indicating that the upcoming flagship smartphones from Google will be powered by the company&#8217;s Tensor G3 processor, which will be manufactured by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> using 3nm process. Further, it is also said that the chipset will be based on Samsung Exynos 2300 SoC.</p>

<p>The upcoming Tensor G3 chip is allegedly codenamed Zuma and will come with the Samsung G5300 modem which is found in the current-generation <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tensor-g2">Tensor G2 processor</a> of the Pixel 7 series.</p>

<p>Coming to the specifications, reports indicate that the Pixel 8 will feature a display with a 2268 x 1080 pixels screen resolution while the Pixel 8 Pro will offer a 2822 x 1344 pixels screen resolution. It further adds that both devices will come packed with up to 12GB of RAM. The screen resolution doesn&#8217;t line up with prior Google Pixel devices, so we would advise you to take this with a pinch of salt.</p>
