Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on X that the company will stop selling Full Self-Driving (FSD) as a one-time purchase after February 14. After this date, FSD will be available only as a monthly subscription, marking a major change in Tesla’s software strategy.

What’s Changing

Until February 14, customers in the US can still buy FSD outright for $8,000 or subscribe for $99 per month. Once the deadline passes, the upfront purchase option will be removed entirely. In China, FSD currently costs 64,000 yuan as a one-time purchase, while a subscription option has not yet been launched.

Why Tesla Is Making the Shift

The move aligns FSD with Tesla’s broader software-as-a-service model. A subscription lowers the entry cost, allows users to pay only when they need it, and removes the idea of FSD as a permanent, appreciating asset tied to the car.

Current Level of FSD

FSD was introduced in 2016 and has evolved from basic Autopilot into an advanced driver-assistance system. However, it is still officially classified as Level 2, meaning drivers must stay alert and in control at all times.

Future Plan

FSD subscription growth is also tied to Musk’s long-term compensation plan, which requires 10 million active FSD subscribers over the next decade.

Tesla’s shift ends the promise of FSD as an “investment” and reframes it as a paid software service, more flexible, but no longer permanent.

Rivian, a U.S.-based electric vehicle maker known for its premium electric trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, has made a bold new claim about the future of driving. The company, which focuses heavily on advanced software and clean-energy technology, says its cars could become so autonomous that owners won’t even need to be inside them.

According to CEO RJ Scaringe, Rivian aims to reach this level of full driverless capability by 2030, allowing vehicles to run errands, pick up friends, and travel completely on their own.

Rivian R2

Steps Toward Full Autonomy

Scaringe explains that Rivian’s next major features include “hands-off everywhere” driving and point-to-point navigation similar to Tesla’s FSD. These systems will still require driver attention at first. But he believes that soon after, cars will no longer need monitoring. By 2028 or 2029, he suggests Rivian vehicles could complete solo trips while owners stay at home.

Why This Matters

Robotaxis like Waymo already drive without humans in certain cities, showing how quickly the field is advancing. Driver-assist systems such as GM’s Super Cruise and Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) allow hands-free driving but still depend on human supervision.

The challenge now is to make fully driverless technology safe, affordable, and available in everyday cars. Whoever achieves this first will gain a huge advantage, giving people extra time to rest, work, or relax while commuting.

AI-generated Image

Tesla’s Driverless Claims

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is also pushing hard toward this goal. According to Reuters, Tesla is testing fully driverless Model Y vehicles in Austin and aims to deliver the first units by June. Musk says these cars will operate with no driver involvement. Further reports say that Tesla will soon launch unsupervised FSD in Austin, allowing vehicles to navigate without human monitoring. These updates show that Tesla remains a major competitor in the race toward full autonomy.

Major Challenges for Autonomous Cars

Developing safe and reliable driverless cars has proven far harder than early predictions suggested. Many challenges remain, including safety validation, rare road scenarios, and regulatory approval. Still, rapid progress in AI is pushing the industry forward.

Old rule-based approaches are being replaced with AI models that learn, adapt, and generalize better. With Rivian, Tesla, GM, and Waymo all improving their autonomous systems, the dream of personal driverless cars is closer than ever, though not guaranteed.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, aiming for a significant launch in China in 2024, is set to encounter substantial challenges, especially due to the country’s extensive use of electric scooters (e-scooters). With over 300 million e-scooters on Chinese roads, adapting FSD to these conditions presents a considerable hurdle.

image for illustration purposes only

Complex Road Conditions in China

The complexity of China’s road conditions is a major factor. Unlike the relatively straightforward road systems in the United States, China’s roads are often crowded and lack dedicated lanes for non-motorized vehicles. For instance, about 30% of roads in central Guangzhou do not have specific lanes for bicycles and e-scooters. This results in e-scooters frequently using motor vehicle lanes, creating a challenging environment for autonomous driving systems like Tesla’s FSD.

XPeng’s Perspective on Autonomous Driving

Li Liyun, head of autonomous driving at XPeng, highlighted the difficulties that Tesla’s FSD will face in China. He emphasized the need for smart driving systems to be optimized for the prevalent e-scooter usage. XPeng, a leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has already tested its smart driving capabilities in cities like Nanning, Guangzhou, Kunming, and Nanchang. Their Navigation Guided Pilot (XNGP) has successfully handled complex scenarios involving e-scooters, demonstrating the importance of local adaptation.

XPeng’s experience and advancements in autonomous driving provide valuable insights. The company is set to release an updated version of XNGP in July, which will integrate end-to-end large model technology for enhanced performance. This update aims to address the specific challenges posed by the complex and crowded urban environments in China.

Market and Regulatory Context

China’s electric scooter market is vast, with 350 million e-scooters and 42.28 million units produced in 2023 alone. Tesla is preparing to register its FSD software with Chinese authorities, targeting an official launch in 2024. A pilot program is currently being conducted in Shanghai’s Nanhui New Town, involving ten Tesla vehicles.

He Xiaopeng, XPeng’s CEO, has tested Tesla’s FSD in the United States and acknowledged its impressive performance in Silicon Valley and on highways. However, he pointed out the significant challenge posed by fast-moving e-scooters, which often travel against traffic in China. This insight underlines the need for Tesla to adapt its technology to the unique conditions of the Chinese market.

The successful adaptation of Tesla’s FSD technology in China hinges on its ability to manage the widespread use of e-scooters and navigate complex road conditions. As the competition in the global self-driving market intensifies, the ability of smart driving systems to optimize for local conditions will be a critical factor for success.
