Tesla Shanghai Factory is Revving Up Production in Q3, with One Model Y being Manufactured every 30 seconds

Despite earlier reports of production cuts, Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory is currently running at full capacity, according to a visit by Beijing News Shell Finance on July 15th. The factory’s Model Y production line is churning out a new car roughly every 30 seconds.

This news comes after concerns arose earlier this year about reduced production at the Shanghai plant. Reuters reported in May that Tesla planned to cut production by at least 20% between March and June 2024. Tesla China remained silent on the issue, and new car registration and export volumes did show a decline compared to the same period in 2023.

However, with the third quarter underway, Tesla appears to be ramping up production to meet its year-end targets. CEO Elon Musk has previously stated that the company expects to surpass last year’s car sales figures, and achieving this goal hinges on the Shanghai factory operating at full speed.

The report also highlights the factory’s impressive level of automation. Tesla’s final assembly workshop utilizes a vertically stacked, dual-line configuration, with vertical elevators transporting doors, bodies, and other components, saving nearly 100 meters of production line space. Additionally, the four workshops are interconnected, allowing for efficient movement of manufactured parts within the facility.

This high degree of automation translates to a staggering 95% fully automated production across the factory, with the welding workshop nearing 100% automation.

Beyond car production, Tesla is also making progress on its Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory project. According to Tesla Vice President Tao Lin, the project remains on track for completion in 2025. This facility will focus on manufacturing Tesla’s flagship energy storage product, the Megapack.

Affordable Tesla Could Revolutionize the Electric Vehicle Market

Tesla manufactures its vehicles globally with factories known as Gigafactories, located in Nevada, Shanghai, Texas, and Berlin, to serve customers worldwide. Recently, the Berlin factory has gained attention for an intriguing claim. According to reports, the company, aiming to produce affordable electric cars, will soon begin production in Germany.

The cost of the budget-friendly Tesla model will be 25,000 Euros. To put this price into perspective, in 2023, the average electric car price in Europe is around 65,000 Euros. Even in the world’s largest electric car market, the price hovers around 31,000 Euros, despite competition from manufacturers like BYD and Xpeng.

Unfortunately, the individual who leaked the news of the affordable Tesla didn’t provide further details regarding the matter. Therefore, we do not know when production will start and where the vehicles will be initially sold. Nevertheless, speculations point towards the highly competitive Chinese market as a likely starting point.

China’s EV market continued its strong growth in October 2023, with sales hitting a new record. The China Passenger Car Association reported that EV retail sales in October reached 640,000 units, up 95.3% year-over-year. This is the highest monthly sales figure for EVs in China to date. BYD remained the top-selling EV brand in China in October, with sales of 301,095 units. This was up 5% from September and 38.4% from a year earlier. Tesla was in second place with sales of 72,115 units, down 2.6% from September but up 0.6% from a year earlier.

Tesla will Manufacture its Latest EVs in Gigafactory Texas and not Mexico

Tesla has long been a trendsetter in the electric vehicle industry, and its CEO Elon Musk isn’t one to shy away from risky bets. However, it appears the Tesla execs are pulling back the reins, nudging Musk towards a more balanced approach.

Elon Musk wanted to launch a Robotaxi with fully autonomous driving

Elon Musk’s initial vision was a Robotaxi that screams “future” — a fully autonomous vehicle, void of any traditional driving amenities like a steering wheel or pedals. Musk was gunning for a high-stakes game, envisioning a Robotaxi that could potentially make Tesla a “ten-trillion company.” But not everyone on Tesla’s team was sold on the idea. Chief designer Franz von Holzhausen, among others, advocated for a Plan B: a more affordable electric car based on the same technology platform.

The concerns were rational. The execs argued that Full Self-Driving (FSD) tech might either not be ready or face legal roadblocks internationally. They also pointed out a compelling market for an affordable electric car, aligning with Tesla’s long-term goal of scaling production significantly. As a result, Tesla is now walking on two roads: developing both the Robotaxi and an affordable electric car. The designs for both vehicles, unveiled to Musk in February 2023, have the futuristic Cybertruck vibe that Musk is so fond of.

Yet, questions abound. Is Tesla stretching itself too thin by pursuing two divergent visions simultaneously? Additionally, initial plans for a new gigafactory in Mexico have been scrapped. High-ranking engineers were reluctant to relocate to Mexico, leading Tesla to shift its base of next-gen EV operations to Austin, Texas.

In summary, Tesla seems to be hedging its bets, working on two game-changing vehicles. While this could offer a safety net, it also poses the risk of diluting focus and resources. Only time will tell if this dual-path approach will pay off or if it’s an overly ambitious gambit. But one thing is clear: when these cars roll out, they’ll look like “something from the future,” as Musk enthusiastically noted. And perhaps that’s the goal—creating the future, but with a safety net.

Tesla Gigafactory Berlin expected to produce 30,000 cars in H1 2022

With the Tesla Gigafacotry Berlin, the brand is setting up its first manufacturing facility in Europe and is also touted to be the company’s most advanced, sustainable and efficient facility so far. Now, it seems to be all set to start production of cars.

As per the new report from German media outlet Automobilwoche, the Berlin Gigafactory only requires the final operating permit from the environmental department and after that arrives, the company will be able to start manufacturing in the country.

The company is expected to start production in the Berlin Gigafactory next month, i.e. in December 2021, and by the end of the first half of 2022, it is expected to produce around 30,000 cars in this new factory.

It is being said that the company was set to start production of its cars in June this year but was postponed because Tesla didn’t receive the necessary EIA certificate in time. Now, the company is expected to get the required clearences within a few days.

If the reports are to be believed, then the Tesla Berlin Gigafactory has completed the production of around five Model Y cars but not on the production line. It is expected to start the production from January at a rate of around 1,000 cars per week and then will gradually increase the production rate.

Apart from this car production factory, the US-based electric car maker is also gearing up to build a large battery production plant at the same location in Glenheide near Berlin. But before that, the Tesla Gigafacotry for car production will operate at full capacity.
