After various rumors and reports, Tesla is finally arriving in the Indian market. The company is bringing its popular electric vehicles to the region soon, with a fresh report revealing the major cities where these cars would make their Indian debut. So let’s check it out.

Tesla’s first showroom might be in BKC, Mumbai

The American EV maker is reportedly planning on opening its first showrooms in both Mumbai and Delhi, two metropolitan cities in India (Via MySmartPrice). Tesla has even secured a 4,000 square foot space on the ground floor of the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. This showroom will host Tesla’s official Indian debut. After the Mumbai reveal, the brand also has plans to open another flagship showroom in Delhi’s Aerocity.

Unfortunately, the exact region of the Delhi showroom is still unclear. This news also arrives after Elon Musk (Tesla CEO) met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Tesla apparently has plans to make its EVs more affordable in India. While its cheapest Tesla Model 3 starts from 40,000 US Dollars, rumors hinted at the brand working on a 25,000 US Dollar model for the Indian market. This roughly translates to about 22,00,000 INR (or 22 lakh INR).

With Tesla entering the Indian EV segment, the entire industry can expect a big impact with the brand bringing cutting edge technology like the autopilot feature. Although, it remains to be seen how the company implements most of these features. Tesla is expected to be planning local manufacturing and could be in talks with the Indian government. But the initial models would likely be imported from China.

In a significant move, Tesla Inc. has unveiled plans to double its imports of components from India, reinforcing its commitment to the burgeoning market. The announcement follows a visit by Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal to Tesla’s manufacturing facility in Fremont, California, where he shared insights into the company’s expansive agenda.

In September, Tesla set its sights on importing components valued between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion from India for the current fiscal year, building on the $1 billion worth of components procured in the previous year.

Minister Goyal’s visit to the U.S. was marked by discussions centered around Tesla’s ventures in India, including the prospect of establishing a factory, manufacturing an affordable $24,000 car, augmenting component imports, and developing a comprehensive charging infrastructure across the nation. Expressing his satisfaction, Goyal highlighted the presence of Indian professionals in senior roles at Tesla.

However, the absence of Tesla’s charismatic CEO Elon Musk during Goyal’s visit raised eyebrows. Goyal, citing Musk’s illness, conveyed the Tesla founder’s apologies and mutual interest in a future meeting. This followed Musk’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June, where Modi encouraged substantial Tesla investments in the country.

Elon Musk had earlier hinted at the possibility of establishing a manufacturing unit in India, contingent on the success of imported vehicles, reflecting his keen interest in the Indian market. Importantly, Goyal, in September, categorically ruled out import duty concessions for Tesla, affirming a policy framework that fosters equal opportunities without differentiation or preferences. India currently imposes a 100% import duty on fully imported cars exceeding $40,000 and 70% on those priced below this threshold.

The Indian government’s strategic initiatives, including production-linked incentives (PLI) for advanced chemistry cell battery storage and auto-components, and drone industries, aim to entice Tesla’s active participation. Despite challenges posed by India’s import duties on fully imported cars, Musk views the market as promising.

Looking ahead, Elon Musk is slated to visit India in 2024, sparking anticipation around potential investments and operations. The government’s commitment to formulating inclusive policies in consultation with all stakeholders underscores its dedication to providing equal opportunities for all players in this dynamic automotive landscape.

As Tesla’s collaboration with India intensifies, the spotlight remains on how the electric vehicle giant will navigate regulatory landscapes, import duties, and local manufacturing to establish a formidable presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.

Tesla cars have become incredibly popular in the US and China. Led by the notorious billionaire Elon Musk, Tesla has become the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer. However, the company has yet to expand to many important markets. In a step in the right direction, it appears that the US automaker will soon set up a factory in India with an annual capacity of 500,000 vehicles. The company plans to sell these cars at a starting price of ₹20 lakh, according to a report.

Tesla could also export cars from India

Times of India has learned that Tesla is now in talks with the Indian government to set up its first factory in the country. The US giant plans to produce up to 500,000 electric vehicles (EVs) annually, with prices starting at ₹20 lakhs, according to the report, which cites government sources. The Indian Commerce and Industry Ministry is reported to be leading the talks this time, and it wants to put together a “good deal” while maintaining a level playing field.

Tesla’s entry in India could give the country’s EV market a significant boost and the consumers more varied options to choose from. The India electric vehicle market size was USD 1.45 billion in 2021, which grew to $3.21 billion in 2022, according to Fortune Business Insights.

Tesla not only wants to manufacture cars in India but it also wants to export them to other Indo-Pacific countries, reports TOI. The company is currently exporting its cars from China to other countries. As of March 2023, 35,886 China-made cars were exported from the Shanghai plant to the rest of the world (via Car News China).

This may be due to its inability to get the Indian government’s buy-in on a downward tariff review. The company is reported to have commenced reassigning local employees.

This could be a blow to the expected quantum of jobs that could be created in the subcontinent with Tesla’s presence. India remains the largest market in the world that lacks Tesla’s presence. Strong import tariffs hand been a major impediment to Tesla’s entry into the Indian market. There were though some indications that it could have entered the market in 2022. This followed the incorporation of an Indian entity in Bengaluru as the brand’s Indian arm.

India has a rich incentive regimen for local manufacturers of electric vehicles and this includes high import tariffs for EVs. The policy has made it difficult for foreign EV powerhouses in China and the US, have been unable to penetrate the market. Tesla had planned to build an EV production facility in India but intended to see how its vehicles fared first in the market. Currently, up to 7 Tesla EVs have been tested and approved in India. The Indian government, through its transport minister, has noted that it wants Tesla to build cars inside India, and not to rely on imports from China. The Service Center and Supercharger stations are yet to be established in the country.

Some of Tesla’s key employees in India are now being reassigned to overseas jobs. The main snag in Tesla’s inability to build an EV production facility in China is its insistence on a favorable import regime. The government will not give preferential treatment, and so it continues to pursue development elsewhere.

According to SCMP, the Minister stated that the American electric car manufacturer should “make cars in India, sell in India and export from India.” Furthermore, the brand should also rely on local suppliers. The Minister further added that Tesla car models in India will cost around 35 lakh INR or about 46,600 US Dollars and the local government is aiming on helping the brand bring its EVs into the country.

Back in August, Tesla had stated that it has received approval to make or import four of its EV car models in India. As of right now, the company is manufacturing its vehicles in factories in the US and in Shanghai, China, while also awaiting final approval for a new plant in Germany as well. Meanwhile, India is also trying to diversify its supply chains away from China, due to recent frictions caused by military clashes in the border regions last year.

Prior to Tesla’s arrival in India, the company’s chief executive Elon Musk stated that the firm’s new electric vehicle plant near Berlin is expected to start producing new cars as early as next month. This factory will be making Model Y cars around November or December and will likely sources its batteries from the company’s factory in China.

The EV maker has been progressing in that direction and has days after its appeal, the Indian government is reportedly considering slashing import duty on EVs.

Now, a new report coming from Counterpoint Research hints at Tesla aiming to give a bigger role to India. It claims that Tesla could announce the production of its cars in India as early as next year.

Earlier this year, India’s Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that the country is ready to offer incentives to ensure that Tesla’s cost of production would be less than in China if the carmaker commits to making its electric vehicles in India.

To attract EV makers, India is considering slashing its import duty. For electric vehicles with a valuation of less than $40,000, the tax rate can be slashed to 40 percent compared to 60 percent currently. For cars that are valued at over $40,000, the rate could be slashed from 100 percent to 60 percent.

It is believed that the Indian government is in favor of cutting import duties to see companies like Tesla providing benefits to the domestic economy by manufacturing locally later on, or give a firm timeline on when it would be able to.

India is currently the fifth largest car market with an annual sale of around 3 million cars but last year, EVs accounted for only 5,000 of them. This is because of the negligible charging infrastructure and the high cost of electric vehicles. Also, India doesn’t have a comprehensive EV policy like China, the world’s biggest auto market.

Tesla is expected to enter the Indian car market and gauge the demand by first importing vehicles instead of manufacturing them locally. Currently, the company has active production facilities in California, Nevada, New York, and Shanghai with three more factories to start operation pretty soon.

According to a TimesNowNews report, the high import duty is one of the primary reasons why the American automobile maker hasn’t entered the Indian market. While it is possible to simply import a car from the company’s Gigafactory in China, the duty would make the car’s price surge, making it less viable in the market. So, the only way to avoid this would mean manufacturing and assembling the cars locally under the Indian government’s EV scheme.

At the moment, the Tesla Model 3 is one of the most affordable models from the company and is offered for a price of around 39,990 USD in the US (roughly 3,000,000 INR or 30 Lakhs). However, the Model 3 in India could reach prices as high as 60 lakhs in the region due to the import duties. This could make the affordable model be too expensive for the local market. As per industry experts, these import duties on fully imported cars to India are a great concern to Elon Musk.

As of right now, India leview a 100 percent tax on the imported cars that are priced over 40,000 USD inclusive of insurance and shipping expenses. Meanwhile, cars priced less than the 40,000 USD mark only have a 60 percent import tax. According to a Counterpoint Research analyst, “Musk has also criticized the government policies for electric vehicles (EV), as they attract the same import tariffs as for petrol and diesel cars.”

According to a Reuters report, Nitin Gadkari, Transport Minister of India, revealed the pitch to the popular electric automaker earlier this week. Furthermore, the move from the government arrives weeks after Tesla registered a company in India. This marks the automobile maker’s entry into the market, which might be as soon as mid 2021. As per sources close to the matter, the brand aims to start by importing and selling its Model 3 electric sedan in the Southeast Asian nation.

Gadkari said that “The government will make sure the production cost for Tesla will be the lowest when compared with the world, even China, when they start manufacturing their cars in India. We will assure that.” At the moment, the local government is willing to offer such incentives in a bid to strengthen its local manufacturing of electric vehicles, batteries, and other components to cut costs of imports and even help curb pollution in major cities as well.

Notably, Tesla’s entry into the Indian market also arrives as various carmakers are moving forward with EV production due to sudden growth and demand of such vehicles, which can help reduce the overall carbon emissions. Currently, India has yet to secure local production from the company, which has also yet to comment on its plans for stepping in to the Indian market.

Last month, Elon Musk had confirmed that Tesla was in talks with several states in India to open its office, showrooms, a factory, and a Research & Development center in India. The new announcement confirms that the company has chosen Karnataka for the factory.

Tesla has already incorporated Tesla Motors India and Energy Private Limited with its registered office in the city of Bengaluru in Karnataka. Bengaluru is a hub for global technology companies and is referred to as “Silicon Vallery of India.”

If the tweets by Elon Musk as to be believed, then Tesla is expected to start selling its cars in the Indian market by the end of this year. Ahead of the launch of the Tesla Model 3, the company had started taking pre-orders in India with a $1,000 deposit but it hasn’t been launched till date in India, after more than three years.

A few days ago, Tesla invested $1.5 billion in bitcoin and Elon Musk has said that the company could soon start accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment.

According to a Reuters report, Tesla Motor India and Energy Private Limited have just been incorporated as of 8th January 2021. The company has registered its office in Bengaluru, a southern city in the state of Karnataka, which is also known as the IT Hub of India as various global tech based firms have their headquarters in the same region. As per the filing, the Indian arm of Tesla has three directors, which includes David Feinstein, who is already a senior executive of the automobile manufacturer.

In an interview with a local newspaper, India’s transport minister, Nitin Gadkari, stated that the US based electric car maker will first sell its offerings in the region and would then consider local assembly and manufacturing as well. Over the course of the last year, Tesla CEO and Founder Elon Musk had stated that the company is planning on entering the Indian market, so registering its brand in the country was an expected move for the brand that aims at launching its cars later this year.

Notably, Tesla’s launch in India also arrives as the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is promoting the production and use of electric vehicles to reduce the nation’s dependency on oils to lower pollution. Although, the lack of investment in supporting infrastructure like charging stations has caused stagnation in the industry’s growth. However, the government has planned incentives worth over 4 billion US Dollars to companies that are setting up advanced battery manufacturing facilities in India.

The electric-car maker will commence its India rollout by first having a dealership in the country and then it may consider a more active presence via vehicle assembly and manufacturing, based on the initial feedback from the first stage, the minister told the newspaper.

Tesla is yet to make any definitive statement on the issue and it is unclear whether the Minister was speaking on the basis of advanced talks with the electric car maker. Also, the Minister’s office is yet to put out any statement concerning the matter.

Editor’s Pick: MIUI 12.5 announced: All new Features, Supported devices, & Rollout details

India has been very keen to drastically scale down its reliance on oil to meet its growing energy and transportation needs, as well as reduce its carbon footprint by cutting down on pollution, but the plan to promote electric cars as an alternative, have been slowed down by a lack of investments in manufacturing and infrastructure such as charging stations.

The first electric car model to be launched will be Model 3, the cheapest among Tesla vehicles, with prices hovering around $74,739 (5.5 million Indian rupees). This information was culled from a report in the Economic Times on Saturday.

In a positive spin to the impending India rollout from 2021, Tesla’s Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk on Sunday confirmed the news via his verified Twitter handle but said it would not happen in January.

In October 2020, the government of the Indian state of Maharashtra had invited the company to the state, several weeks after CEO Elon Musk hinted at making an entry into the sub-continent in 2021.
