Tesla has officially launched the Model Y electric SUV in India, marking the company’s long-anticipated debut in the country. The launch follows a teaser released last week and coincides with the opening of Tesla’s first Experience Centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.

Tesla will offer two rear-wheel drive variants of the Model Y. Bookings are now open on the official website, and deliveries are scheduled to begin later this year. The base Rear-Wheel Drive variant will start shipping in Q3 2025, while the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive model will be available from Q4 2025. Initial deliveries will be limited to Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram.

The Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive is priced at ₹60,99,690 (on-road), while the Long Range version costs ₹69,07,690. These prices include registration and taxes but may vary depending on state regulations.

The Model Y features a minimal exterior design with updated front and rear lightbars, a panoramic glass roof, and acoustic laminated glass to reduce road noise. Inside the cabin, Tesla has included soft-touch materials, ambient lighting, and aluminum trim. The dashboard features a 15.4-inch central touchscreen and an 8-inch display for rear passengers.

Both variants include heated and ventilated front seats, heated and power-reclining second-row seats, and dual-zone climate control. Tesla claims the standard Model Y offers a WLTP range of 500 km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The Long Range model increases the range to 622 km and completes the same sprint in 5.6 seconds.

The Model Y supports Tesla’s digital ecosystem, which includes Tesla Theater for streaming, Tesla Arcade for in-car gaming, and app-based remote controls. Standard features also include a 9-speaker sound system, dashcam and Sentry Mode, Bluetooth rear seat controls, and route-aware charging suggestions.

Safety features include Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Avoidance. Tesla has included eight external cameras, including a new front-facing unit, to support future software-based driver-assist upgrades.

Customers can opt for additional upgrades such as exterior paint options priced between ₹95,000 and ₹1,95,000, a Black and White interior for ₹95,000, and Full Self-Driving Capability for ₹6,00,000.

Tesla plans to expand its presence across metro cities in India, including New Delhi. The company also aims to build local support infrastructure such as service centers, delivery hubs, and charging stations.

Tesla’s pricing in India remains significantly higher than in the U.S., where the Model Y starts at $44,990. The price increase is largely due to high import duties and luxury taxes. Tesla has not yet confirmed any plans for local manufacturing, which would make the Model Y eligible for lower import duties under India’s new EV policy.

A Tesla electric vehicle has burnt to ashes while at a charging station in Pennsylvania, United States. The EV caught fire at the Sheetz supercharging station in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania on July 8. There is no confirmation yet on the model of the vehicle but it is suspected to be a Model Y.

The fire incident at the Pennsylvania supercharging station drew a quick response from the Upper Allen Fire Department and other fire services. The responders included the Upper Allen Police, Mechanicsburg Fire Company, TEAM 200, Lisburn Fire Company, and Hampden Township Fire Department. The combined response was however not enough to save the car from being burnt almost completely.

The Upper Allen Fire Department provided a detailed report of the incident but the cause of the fire has not been revealed to the general public. While battling the inferno, the fire department shut down the street. It used a fire hydrant at the opposite side of the road and remained on the scene for about 5 hours, as there were fears that a reignition could occur.

There have been several reported cases of Tesla cars catching fire but the company insists that its vehicles are safe. Tesla published a report recently that claimed that its cars catch fire 9 times less than the US average per 1 billion miles covered. It is always advised that car owners utilize preventive measures to mitigate or prevent a fire from engulfing their car.

Tesla has unveiled the updated Model Y EV in China. The refreshed Tesla Model Y comes with changes to the exterior, interior, and other features. Three versions namely rear-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive, and Performance versions are available. The major specs for the Made-in-China (MIC) Tesla Model Y are the same.

The starting prices of the three available versions of the Model Y are unchanged. It is unclear the reasoning behind the update but there are no major changes, unlike the case of the Tesla Model 3. There are indications however that a significant upgrade of the Juniper is expected in 2024.

The new Model Y has a new, black 19-inch wheel design, in place of the previous silver Gemini design. The new wheels could likely offer greater aerodynamics, with an increased CLTC range. The rear-wheel-drive Tesla Model Y has an estimated range of 344 miles (554 km). The dual-motor, all-wheel drive, Long Range version has a CLTC range of 428 miles (688 km). Both models offer higher CLTC ranges than their predecessors, between 9km and 28km. The estimated range of the Model Y Performance version remains unchanged.

The entry-level Tesla Model Y RWD can go from 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds, compared to 6.9 seconds from its predecessor. The improvement may not be unconnected to the drive unit, battery setup, or a software change.

The interior of the Tesla Model Y has RGB ambient lighting on the dashboard while a new textile material replaces the wood trim. The new MIC Model Y is equipped with the Hardware 4.0 (HW4) self-driving system and improvements in NVH performance.

The prices of the three updated Tesla Model Y in China start at 262,900 yuan ($36,788). The wait times on the Tesla online configurator indicate 2-6 weeks for the RWD and Performance versions, and 6-8 weeks for the AWD version. These times are dynamic and could change depending on the market feedback.

Tesla Recalls 137 Model Y Vehicles for Loose Steering Wheels

In the past, Tesla has recalled vehicles for problems with the brakes, the power steering, and the airbags. For instance, we reported a short while ago about the company recalling tens of thousands of cars in China. Now, Tesla is recalling 137 Model Y vehicles because the steering wheels may come off.

The recall is being done because a single fastener may not be tightened enough. This could cause the steering wheel to come loose while the car is being driven. And if you think this is the first time such a problem has occurred, you are mistaken. This is the third known instance of a Tesla steering wheel coming off. The first incident happened in 2020, and the second incident happened in 2021.

The recall affects Model Y vehicles built between January 1, 2022 and March 25, 2023. Tesla will inspect the steering wheels of affected vehicles and tighten the fasteners if necessary. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail. Luckily, no crashes, injuries, or deaths have been reported because of this technical issue. Furthermore, Xpeng’s official release of the teaser images boldly challenges Tesla with the caption, “Looking at my rear, don’t think about the Y.” However, this bold move has been met with criticism from Xpeng’s own owners, who commented, “Nice car, but honestly, your copywriting is really bad,” “As a P7 owner, I think directly challenging the Model Y is unnecessary,” and “Sigh, my company’s marketing is really difficult.”

Tesla owners in China protest price cuts as delivery times extend on higher demand

According to the latest reports, the new price cuts saw the Chinese-made Model 3 fall by 13.5%, which now starts at $33,515, and the Model Y cut by 10%, which now starts at $37,899. The protesters reportedly purchased the cars just before the end of 2022 in order to take advantage of expiring government subsidies for EVs.

The demonstrations took place at Tesla showrooms in locations such as Shanghai, Beijing, and Chengdu. In Chengdu, the protesters reportedly shouted “Return the money, refund our cars.” A Tesla China spokesperson told the press that the company is not planning to compensate new buyers who took delivery before Friday’s price cut.

The price cuts, which were also implemented in Australia, Japan, and South Korea, are reportedly driving new demand for Tesla vehicles in China. The company’s China website shows that the waiting times for both the rear-wheel drive and long-range versions of the Model Y are a week longer after the price cuts, with delivery wait time for these versions pushed to two to five weeks.

However, the wait time for all Model 3 versions and the Model Y performance edition remains at one to four weeks. The extended wait times in China are seen as a bullish sign on the street, but Wedbush analyst Dan Ives predicted that more price cuts would be needed in China in order to boost demand.

“The major worry now overhead for Tesla is that the demand story especially out of China is showing heavy cracks in the armor at a time that EV competition is steadily increasing domestically with NIO, BYD, Xpeng, and others fighting for a smaller pie with the Chinese consumer weakening,” Ives wrote on January 4th. “With China representing 40%+ of the global growth story for Tesla this is a heavy concern for the Street which will likely result in more significant price cuts over the coming months to spur demand as a potential pricing war takes place to gain market share in a darker macro backdrop.”

With the Chinese market being one of the most important markets for Tesla, this recent development is something to be watched closely. As production for the Chinese New year is approaching (January 22) and Tesla has an extended break for Giga Shanghai, the company needs to make sure they can strike the right balance to keep the demand high but also to keep customers satisfaction intact.

According to a tweet from Tesla, the company’s production of the Model Y at its Berlin Gigafactory has reached 3,000 units per week. This marks a significant increase in production capacity since the Gigafactory opened in March 2022 and reached 1,000 units per week in June and 2,000 units per week in October.

Tesla’s production of the Model Y at its Berlin Gigafactory has surpassed 3,000 units per week, according to a tweet from the official Tesla account. The Berlin Gigafactory opened on March 22, 2022 and reached a weekly production of 1,000 Model Y units in mid-June and 2,000 units in early October.

Recently, Tesla also announced that its factory in Austin, Texas is producing 3,000 Model Y units per week. The rapid increase in production capacity at the Berlin and Texas Gigafactories, along with capacity upgrades at the California and Shanghai Gigafactories, has led to a decrease in backlogged orders for Tesla.

According to analyst Troy Teslike, Tesla’s global electric vehicle order backlog has been steadily decreasing in recent months and was down to 190,000 units as of November 30, 2022. This is reportedly equivalent to approximately 44 days of production capacity.

In October, Tesla released its third quarter vehicle production and delivery numbers for 2022. The data showed that the company produced 366,000 vehicles and delivered 344,000, an increase of over 100,000 vehicles compared to the same period the previous year, but still below analyst expectations.

During the third quarter, Tesla produced 365,923 new vehicles, with 345,988 of those being Model 3 and Model Y and 199,35 being Model S and Model X. In terms of deliveries, Tesla delivered 343,830 new vehicles, with 325,158 being Model 3 and Model Y and 18,672 being Model S and Model X.

In terms of production and delivery, Tesla’s performance in the third quarter was impacted by the global semiconductor shortage and logistics challenges, but the company is working to increase production and delivery capacity. The rapid increase in Model Y production at the Berlin and Texas Gigafactories is a positive sign for Tesla’s production capabilities.

Tesla has just officially launched two new electric models in Thailand. The new cars are two of its popular electric cars, including the Model 3 and Model Y, that are now available for orders as of today (7th December 2022).

The known EV maker has just announced the two models in the region, with the Model 3 starting from 1,759,000 baht (roughly 50,115 US Dollars) and the Model Y will start from 1,959,000 baht (roughly 55,810 US Dollars). Furthermore, the company has promised that the deliveries for these cars will be done sometime by the first quarter of 2023. Tesla is also planning on setting up new Supercharge service points as well, which are also expected to be installed in the first quarter of next year.

As per official notes, at least one of the installations will be in the central areas and the plan will include expansion to 10 points by the end of 2023. Talking about the EVs themselves, the Model 3 is an electric sedan that will offer a maximum operational range of 681 kilometers with a top speed of 261 km/h. This car can also reach 0-100km/r in just 3.3 seconds. On the other hand, the Model Y is an electric SUV that will offer a maximum operational range of 623 kilometers. It as a top speed of 250 km/h and can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds.

Tesla‘s charging stations have in recent times become easy targets for vandals who place a premium on the charging cables. A report out of the UK shows that EV charging cable theft was rapidly replacing catalytic converter thefts from ICE vehicles. It was recently reported in China that Tesla charging stations are being vandalized and the cables sold for cash. Apparently, a group of criminals in Germany decided to take things a notch higher as they busted a Tesla delivery center in Weiterstadt, making away with the wheels and aero caps in 11 different Tesla models comprising the Model 3 and Model Y that are waiting to be delivered to their owners.

This obviously is a new form of theft as it is the first such incident we are getting despite Tesla having several delivery hubs located in different cities across Europe.

A report by the local police states that the robbery looks to have taken place sometime between 6:00pm on Friday, March 11, and 9:00am on Saturday March 12, obviously taking advantage of the cover of darkness. The criminals succeeded in removing the complete set of wheels on a combination of 11 Model 3 and Model Y EVs, leaving the cars suspended on cinder blocks. It is likely this may have caused some damages to the undercarriage and battery packs of the models.

Apart from making away with the wheels, the vandals also stole the aero caps from another five Teslas. The criminals also deliberately smashed the glass roof on one of the vehicles but it was stated if it is a Model 3 or Model Y.

Investigations are already ongoing and the police are encouraging locals who may have witnessed the crime to come forward. It is unclear if there were security personnel manning the hub as of the time of the robbery. We expect more details to emerge in no distant time.

Tesla is apparently working on a new feature for its popular electric vehicles. Although, this might not be a highly anticipated one, as it oddly locks users out of seat controls, if they fiddle with it a bit too much.

According to hacker and researcher @greentheonly on Twitter, the new feature from the American EV maker will be rolled out to prevent excessive abuse of seat controls. The company recently began installing new seat motors in some of its Model 3 and Model Y series EVs, which aren’t made from China’s Yangfeng and its on in house production. These new motors are made by Brose.

But the striking difference between the two other motors and the Brose one is what the hacker dubbed as a “seat abuse” metric. In other words, this new feature will issue warning to users if they make too many adjustments. Furthermore, it will outright disable seat controls as well, if the user does not take note of these warnings. This also implies that the Tesla Model EV is keeping track of the number of adjustments a user is making.

While this might sound like the brand is taking control away from the users, keep in mind that the feature will apparently kick in only when seat controls are used “excessively.” Meaning, it could be for children that tend to mess around with buttons. The first warning shows the message “Excessive use of seat track motor detected,” which is displayed after 90 seconds of use within a 5 minute period. So it doesn’t sound that bad right now. But we will have to wait and see just how this works in real life scenarios.

Tesla has raised the pricing for certain electric vehicle models in China. The company’s official Chinese website has revealed that the pricing for the rear wheel drive variant of the Model 3 and Model Y has been increased.

Looking at the reformed prices, the Model 3’s rear wheel drive variant now costs around 265,652 Yuan (roughly 42,000 US Dollars), which marks an increase of 10,000 Yuan (roughly 1,575 US Dollars) over the original price. On the other hand, the price of the rear wheel drive version of the Model Y has also been raised to 301,840 Yuan (roughly 47,560 US Dollars), which is around 21,000 Yuan (roughly 3,320 US Dollars) higher than the previous price tag.

For those unaware, the rear wheel drive versions are also the base variant of both EV models. Talking about the Model Y, it offers a 545 kilometer range on a single full charge and has a top speed of 217 km/h. It can even accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds. On the other hand, the American automobile giant’s Model 3 offers a top speed of 225 km/h, with a maximum range of 556 kilometers on a single full charge. It can go 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds.

Unfortunately, the official reason for the price hike is unknown as of right now. Although, it might be due to the ongoing chip shortage issue that has impacted various industries across the globe, including automobiles. Rising chip costs due to the growing demand for semiconductors have caused chipmakers to raise the prices as well. Other materials and parts shortages or components supply constraints might also be a factor. However, this is just speculation at the moment so take it with a pinch of salt.

The 2022 Tesla Model Y is gearing up to see a major upgrade. The company is gearing up to receive an improvement in interface, with the inclusion if an AMD Ryzen chips for a better and faster touchscreen.

The new chip would basically enable the car to offer better user experience while other upgrades include a lithium ion auxiliary battery and laminated glass. As of right now, the electric vehicle making giant is gearing up for the launch of the latest iteration of the Model Y, which should be available globally in the coming months. Furthermore, customers in China have already started receiving new upgraded Performance models, so these can also be expected to ship in other regions as well.

At the moment, the wait time for a Performance variant in China has reached a full year. Now, one of the Chinese owners shared an image on Twitter, which revealed that their new Performance variant is powered by an AMD Ryzen chip over the Intel Atom, which had previously powered the MCU (media control unit) on older EV models. Looking at the tweet, the person stated that the company’s Gigafactory in China is installing the latset AMD Ryzen series chips on the latest Model Y Performance.

Similarly, another customer also took to Twitter to share that their latest Model Y also features an AMD Ryzen chip, front and rear laminated glass, 16V lithium ion battery, and a 78.4 kWh LG NCMA battery as well. Reportedly, this chip is the same one that is also shipped with the Model S and Model X. Although, it is paired with 8GB of RAM rather than 16GB since the Model Y only has a singly display to operate.

Tesla, one of the most popular electric car manufacturers globally, has now started delivering the first batch of Model Y High-Performance models in China. This was confirmed by the company itself on its official Weibo account.

The China-made Model Y started delivering in the country from January but out of the two models — Long Ranger and High-Performance, it appears that only the Long Range model was being delivered so far.

The Tesla Model Y High-Performance model has a starting price of 389,900 yuan and has a battery life of 566 kilometers under the NEDC standard. When compared, the price is 111,900 yuan more than the entry-level Model Y.

Thanks to the dual-motor all-wheel drive, the car only takes 3.7 seconds to accelerate from zero kilometers to 100 kilometers and has a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour.

Additionally, the Tesla Model Y High-Performance model with 10 milliseconds four-wheel-drive response speed is equipped with a racing kit, including 21-inch cyclone turbine wheels and carbon fiber spoilers, advanced braking devices, exclusive aluminum alloy pedals, and lower suspension.

Recently, Tesla’s Giga Shanghai reached a production capacity of 1,000 Model Y vehicles per day. The Model Y production rate at Giga Shanghai is higher than that of the Model 3, which is produced at 800 vehicles per day.

Tesla has already sold out of the entry-level Model Y available capacity in China earlier this month, and the company has revealed that new orders won’t be delivered until early 2022.

The global chip shortage is wreaking havoc on many microchip-dependent industries, like the automotive industry, including Tesla, which for the most part has managed to avoid the brunt of it. This has been possible thanks to quick decision-making like pivoting to microcontrollers and developing newer firmware to work with new chips from different suppliers.

However, Tesla might be facing a new PR nightmare in the form of missing USB ports in their latest Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

In the last few days, reports have surfaced that some new Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles have been delivered with missing USB-C ports. Most affected cars seem to be missing the USB-C ports along the back wall of the center console, with one claiming that the rear-seat USB ports are missing. These owners have also complained about the wireless charging not working.

According to Electrek, an auto-tech website, Tesla blames the missing parts on the global chip shortage.

As a new Tesla owner, it is understandable that due to the ongoing semiconductor shortages, some non-essential parts of your vehicle might be missing. The concern, however, comes with the lack of communication or transparency from Tesla.

These units are often delivered without informing the customer about the missing parts. Many customers have pointed out that this issue can be easily solved if Tesla marked these vehicles beforehand and made a priority list to install the missing parts on the latest date of availability.

During the month of August, electric vehicle sales reached 506,000 units. A new report shared the figure and found that our of the half a million figure, more than 50 percent of all sales for electric vehicles were in China.

According to TheElec, the report arrives from EV Volumes who added that the overall figure is likely higher than 510,000 units when including the nations who’s data was unavailable. This also marked total sales doubling over the same month from a year ago. Notably, out of this total figure, 260,000 units or more than half of the EV sales in August were made in China. In Germany, around 52,000 units of EVs were sold, while the US market saw around 44,000 units being sold.

Similarly, France accounted for 17,000 units and Norway saw 14,000 EV units sold. In South Korea, electric vehicle sales reached 9,600 units, which marked a sizeable 172 percent growth year on year. EV Volumes further added that the launch of the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5 boosted sales in August, while electric trucks from Hyundai and Kia were also quite popular.

In terms of total units sold, the Tesla Model 3 was the most popular electric car, which sold around 282,000 units across the globe during this month. The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV was the second most popular EV that sold 245,000 units, followed by Tesla Model Y with 180,000 units sold. The model 3 was popular in Europe, while the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV was popular in China. EV Volumes projects total sales of electric vehicles to hit 6.41 million unit this year.

Krafton and Tencent Games have collaborated with Tesla to bring the latter’s recognizable vehicles to the popular looter shooter title, PUBG Mobile. Now, players can expect to see models like the Model Y and even the Cybertruck in game.

The new cars arrive with the new 1.5 update, which is a major roll out that brings various changes in the Erangel map as well. Talking about the collaboration, PUBG Mobile X Tesla has also brought the American electric vehicle maker’s Gigafactory, which the players can explore. In this factory, one can assemble the Model Y model that is a self driving car along with other vehicles like the Cybertruck by activating certain switches.

These cars will then proceed to drive around the map and will drop supply crates when damaged by any players that encounter them. Although, the game does not allow any player to drive these new vehicles, unfortunately. Furthermore, the update also bring various changes to the original Erangel map as well, with overhauls to the buildings alongside new equipment like the futuristic anti gravity bike.

While these changes in the update are available for the mobile port of the popular battle royale game, its PC variant is likely to not receive a similar update considering its gameplay is based around more realistic mechanics. However, the new PUBG Mobile update is a great platform for Tesla to advertise its vehicles since the game is one of the most popular mobile games in the market as of right now.

Electric car maker, Tesla Inc says it has begun sales of its China-made Model Y sport-utility vehicles (SUV) and the first customers are expected to take delivery of their automobiles this month, as the company makes inroads into the Chinese market, which is the world’s biggest car market.

Although the demand for electric vehicles, as well as the needed infrastructure needed for it, is still very low in parts of Asia compared to Europe, the Chinese market provides abounding opportunities and potentials for electric vehicle makers to tap in, as countries key into initiatives to cut greenhouse gases emissions and reduce their carbon footprint.

The electric car runs on substantially cleaner energy than its gasoline and diesel counterparts, thus producing a significantly reduced carbon footprint, in comparison with conventional cars.

China offers several incentives including hefty subsidies for electric vehicle manufacturing and deployment as it pursues a policy of cutting down on pollution from petrol or diesel cars, which aligns with Tesla’s global strategy. The electric vehicle maker is expanding its Shanghai factory where the Model 3 sedans are produced. The Model 3 vehicles have been exported to the European market since October 2020.

The company is also adding manufacturing capacity for electric vehicle chargers in Shanghai and expanding its sales and service network in China. It sold over 20,000 vehicles in November 2020 alone.

The Model Y sells in China for around 339,900 yuan (about $52,000). Tesla’s China sales figures are indicative of a growing demand for these electric vehicles which also provide substantial savings in energy costs in the long run.

Some other electric vehicle makers already berthed in China include Volkswagen and BMW, while several local manufacturers such as Nio, Xpeng, and Li Auto are also seeking a bite from the lucrative Chinese market.
