Tesla finally delivers Electric Semi Trucks following a 3 year delay

Tesla had first announced the first announced its Electric Semi Trucks around 5 years ago. Since then, the company is finally delivering the Electric Semi Trucks to its customers, but these deliveries are a whole 3 years old.

The EV maker giant had first unveiled the concept back in 2017, with production planned to begin in 2019. However, following various issues like component shortages and even the Coronavirus pandemic, the company saw major delays in its schedule from its Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada, US. Interestingly enough, the representatives from PepsiCo were one of the first customers to reserve 100 Electric Semi Trucks following the official announcement.

But before the company could make its deliveries, Tesla got trolled by Renault who already made deliveries of its Electric Delivery Trucks to Coca Cola. Talking about the Tesla Semi Trucks, are powered by four independent motors on the rear axles, can reach 0-60mph in just 20 seconds, and has a battery range of an impressive 500 miles. The pricing for these trucks starts from 150,000 US Dollars and have already been ordered by other big names like Walmart and FedEx.

These trucks will feature a new 1,000 volt powertrain architecture along with traction control to prevent jackknifing, regenerative braking for increased battery efficiency, and even an automatic clutch for seamless highway driving. Just recently, Musk stated that one of Tesla’s battery powered class 8 semi trucks had completed a 500 mile trip fully loaded with 81,000 pounds of cargo. The trip was made between the Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California, to San Diego.

The trajectory of development of the Tesla Semi has seen the futuristic electric truck miss some specified deadlines. The global chip shortage and the coronavirus pandemic may have contributed to the delays. The company seems to be turning the corner as the Tesla Semi has now started receiving orders. A $20,000 deposit is the requirement but it remains to be seen how it will go without any delivery date specified.

In 2021, Tesla had announced that deliveries of the Tesla Semi will commence in a few months, but the company failed to deliver. The Tesla Semi is a great-looking monster of a truck with center driving and the cabin doors behind the front wheels and beside the driver’s seat. The unusual design of the entry points has taken cognizance of driver safety. The two large screens on the sides of the steering wheel give an unobtrusive view for the driver. Parts of the large screen serve as the rearview mirror of the electric truck.

Tesla seems to have imposed its core principles in the design of the interior of the Semi. There are no distractions in the cabin while maximum comfort is guaranteed. The Tesla Semi comes highly priced. There is a 300 miles (483km) model priced at $150,000 while the 500 miles (804km) model will cost $180,000. Both models will offer haulage capabilities of around 36 tonnes and are well-kitted in the current market. The truck can accelerate from 0 to 60mph (97km/h) in 20 seconds even with its massive load.

The Tesla Semi is being projected as offering substantial savings in fuel costs from traditional trucks. It is projected as capable of saving up to $100,000/ year in running costs, which is simply massive. The Tesla Semi could therefore bring revolutionary changes to the haulage industry if the energy-saving projections are correct. It is expected that the delivery date for the Tesla Semi will not be too far off since the pre-order process has commenced.

Nikola Electric Trucks to launch in the market before Tesla Semi

Nikola has apparently beaten Tesla in the race to launch new electric semi trucks in the market. The company has begun production of its electric semis at its plant in the US while Elon Musk‘s Tesla faces a delay.

The news arrives from a Forbes report that stated that production of the new electric semis at the Arizona plant. These new trucks will be hitting in the market a whole year ahead of the highly anticipated Tesla Semi. As of right now, the plant has begun commercial production of the battery powered Tre trucks earlier this week. The 250,000 square foot facility is now able to produce one truck per day at the moment. Although, the company has plans on a second phase of the factory, which should go live by 2023.

Notably, the second phase will include Tre trucks powered by Hydrogen. According to Nikola CEO Mark Russell “We have been a pre revenue startup for years, where everything we spent we had to raise from investors. Today marks the day when we transition to customer deliveries. We have trucks that we can deliver to customers and get paid for. We’re now going to be a revenue-producing company and will be forever.”

The company claims that the Tre has the longest range of any electric semi on the market, offering 350 miles (roughly 563 kilometers) per charge from its 753 kWh battery pack. This large battery is better than any of its potential rivals in the market, including offerings from Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, BYD, Volvo and Lion Electric.

Italian car design firm Pininfarina has unveiled its latest heavy-duty all-electric autonomous truck with a beautiful and expansive design. The design of the Xingtu reflects a vigorous reliance on cutting-edge technology to produce a truck that will provide comfort to both the environment and its driver. The Pininfarina Xingtu electric truck is specifically designed for DeepWay, a smart truck company and it is a semi-autonomous vehicle. It is targeting long-haul logistic operations and cargo deliveries in a sustainable and safe manner.

The Pininfarina Xingtu electric truck is primed to improve cargo transportation efficiency in a sustainable manner to the environment while also providing drivers the needed comforts akin to what they might expect at home. DeepWay was formed in 2020 and it has the backing of Chinese internet powerhouse Baidu. Pininfarina was commissioned by DeepWay to design the Xingtu concept semi-autonomous truck, which comes with an extensive lineup of features and gadgets. These include 11 onboard cameras, a LIDAR sensor, radars, infra-red detectors, and other components that provide excellent navigation for the truck. The Xingtu is capable of detecting obstacles 1 km away and providing a proper response for such obstacles.

The design of the complex semi-autonomous all-electric truck was accomplished by Pininfarina Shanghai. The company’s Head of Design, Matteo Piguzzi stated that heavy-duty trucks are rapidly evolving to adapt to a fast-changing environment with technology-driven innovations for seamless operations and enhanced safety. The efficiency and aerodynamics technology deployed in the Xingtu reflects in its aesthetically appealing exterior which is streamlined for autonomous driving.

The 450kWh battery of the Xingtu gives it a range of 300km, but this can be massively scaled because the battery pack is easily swappable. The battery can also be fully charged in one hour. The interior of the Xingtu is another area of innovation and technology. The large display screen is an infotainment hub, and the experience is further accentuated with expansive and ultra-comfortable seats, and a voice assistant to enable prompt actions. There are no details as of now however on the possible release date for the Xingtu. Pininfarina could provide such details subsequently.

PepsiCo to take delivery of 15 Tesla Semi electric trucks later this year

Soft drinks giant PepsiCo has kick-started a program that will see it gradually transiting from diesel-powered trucks to semi-electric trucks produced by Tesla. The collaboration between PepsiCo and Tesla, the global leader in electric vehicle production, will yield 15 semi-electric trucks by the end of this year, according to the company.

The delivery of the semi-electric trucks to PepsiCo will mark an important milestone for both PepsiCo and Tesla. The electric vehicle maker had grappled with several challenges in producing the semi-electric truck with a couple of missed production targets. Since the first semi-electric vehicle prototype was released in 2017 by Tesla, it has continued to make progress in the development. It is expected that production will begin this year and PepsiCo will be among the first set of customers to take delivery of the trucks.

There are no indications yet from Tesla about the number of semi-electric trucks to be produced this year. We can be sure that PepsiCo’s inclusion as one of its major clients in the program may mean that there may be plans to scale up the production to meet the expected demand from the soft drinks giant.

PepsiCo had made an initial order of 100 trucks in 2017. This number could go up significantly if the goal is to have a reduced emission profile for the company. PepsiCo planned to use the trucks to turn one of its production facilities in California into a zero-emission facility. PepsiCo today revealed that the California plant is deploying a rich mix of renewable energy options that are inching it towards net-zero emissions.

Although the full specs of the semi-electric truck models are not yet out, we know that it will be a class 8 truck capable of carrying loads up to 36 tons, with the range it can go on a full charge between 300 and 500 miles, while it costs between $150,000 and $180,000.
