Under the hood, it is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 8020 SoC that is paired with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage (up to 24GB of virtual RAM expansion). A massive 8,800mAh battery pack powers this device, which supports 120W wired fast charging. The Blackview BL9000 Pro sports a tall 6.78-inch display with Gorilla Glass protection, 120Hz refresh rate, and Full HD+ resolution.

The device runs on the Android 14 OS based DokeOS 4.0 out of the box. For regular photography, buyers also get a 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN5 primary sensor and a 13-megapixel ultra wide angle lens at the back, and another 50-megapixel selfie shooter on the front. The BL9000 Pro pre-orders have officially kicked off on AliExpress, lasting till May 17. Between these dates, it is listed for a 429.99 US Dollar introductory price, while its actual price is set to be 800 US Dollars.

Amidst growing concerns from many workers over the Coronavirus pandemic, Amazon had to employ various precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its employees. For this, the e-retailing giant started providing face masks and conduct regular temperature checks through thermal cameras. However, it seems that Amazon has bought cameras from a Chinese company that was previously blacklisted by the US government.

According to a Reuters report, Amazon has spent about 10 million US Dollars for 1,500 thermal cameras. Although, it seems that the company Amazon has bought them from was previously implicated to be involved with China’s efforts to detain and harass Uighurs and Muslim minorities. The Chinese company, Zhejiang Dahua Technology, has declined any such allegation but it was one of the 28 companies that had faced the trade ban from the US Commerce Department back in October 2019.

Zhejiang Dahua Technology was placed on the “Entity List” similar to Huawei. For those unaware, it is essentially the blacklisting of a company that is deemed to be a threat to the US. These companies face pressure from the US and have their operations hindered as they cannot buy or sell products/services to American based companies.

Apparently, the purchase from Amazon is legal since the “rules control the US Government contract awards and exports to blacklisted firms.” However, they do not stop sales to the private sector. Furthermore, Amazon did not confirm the purchase, rather, it was using thermal cameras from “multiple’ sources and not limited to just Dahua. This includes Infrared Cameras Inc and Flir, with about 500 cameras being used in the US. Interestingly, the Dahua made cameras are capable of facial recognition to match temperature data later on, but Amazon insists on not using this technology in their cameras.

The MyFLIR app also allows you to thermally tune level and span, adjust parameters, and much more. To be specific, the shape of a cross, as shown in the video, displays the spot temperature, and it can be moved to detect the temperature of different points. The shape of a square can measure the average temperature of the enclosed area which can be reduced or enlarged in equal proportion.

And there are 9 different color palettes. Generally, the “Icon” color scheme is the most commonly used. But don’t worry about what color mode you are in. You can always go back and change the colors after you take a picture.

It seems that the Blackview BV9800 Pro is a cool device to have fun with but it’s much more than that. It is very useful for both indoor and outdoor use: You can detect leaks, thermal insulation problems, hot wires, etc in a building but you can also use it to look for animals (or people) in the woods even on the darkest night.

The first thing that came to mind when referring to a thermal camera on a smartphone, was CAT S61/S60. That changed recently as Blackview announced the BV9800 Pro rugged outdoor smartphone that comes with a Thermal camera by FLIR® and boasts a Sony® 48MP camera. The feature went viral last month when the company started the “warm-up” marketing campaign. Almost 2 months later, someone would say that the Blackview BV9800 Pro is a late-comer but let’s see how both the smartphones stack up against each other.

Display & Design

The Blackview BV9800 Pro and the CAT S61 boast the most impressive design and build quality. Both phones boast excellent design and build quality and both have a super rugged body that is waterproof, drop-proof, and dustproof (IP68/IP69K/MIL-STD-810G certified). But when it comes to the display, the BV9800 Pro is a clear winner since it comes with a 6.3″ IPS FHD+ display with 19.5:9. Camera

Moving on to the optics found in both phones, the brand-new Blackview phone comes with Sony’s popular 48MP sensor with night shot mode support as a part of a triple camera setup. The camera setup also includes a FLIR® Lepton® thermal imaging sensor and a 5MP sensor assisting with thermal imaging, with an extra flash. Also, there is a 16MP front shooter. The CAT S61 is apparently weaker in this part as it sports a 16MP single rear camera with dual LED flash and an 8MP front shooter.

Battery

Here things are even clearer, as BV9800 Pro houses an enormous 6580mAh battery with wireless charging support. That’s almost 47% bigger than the 4500mAh battery found in CAT S61. Both phones come with an 18W charger though.
