<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/10/16/intel-14-gen-desktop-cpus-6ghz-clock/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Intel recently introduced its 14th-gen Raptor Lake processors</a>. These eagerly anticipated processors have once again managed to impress with their performance. For instance, the P-cores on the 14th-gen processors can reach up to 6 GHz, which is 200 MHz higher than the 12th-gen processors. However, in addition to all this performance and innovative features, the new processors have a significant drawback. According to Intel&#8217;s announcement, the 14th-gen desktop processors do not support Thunderbolt 5. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Intel 14th-Gen Desktop Processors Do Not Support Thunderbolt 5</strong></h2>

<p>If there are those among you who don&#8217;t know, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/09/15/intel-thunderbolt-5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thunderbolt 5</a> is the newest version of the Thunderbolt interface developed by Intel. This technology is a universal bus interface that merges PCI Express and DisplayPort into one serial signal. It&#8217;s capable of transmitting both data and video through a single cable. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Intel-CPUs.jpg?x10805" alt="Intel CPUs" class="wp-image-556265" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Intel-CPUs.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Intel-CPUs-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Intel-CPUs-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Intel-CPUs-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Intel-CPUs-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure></div>

<p>Thunderbolt 5 supports a bi-directional bandwidth of up to 80 Gbps, which is double the speed of Thunderbolt 4. With Thunderbolt 5, you can mirror displays, transmit data, and use it for many different tasks. In fact, we often see this technology being frequently used in laptops. However, the 14th-gen Intel desktop processors do not support Thunderbolt 5.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="538" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-1024x538.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-567048" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-300x158.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-768x403.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-1536x806.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-696x365.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-1068x561.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-800x420.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>This was a surprise to many, as Intel had initially stated that the 14th-gen processors would support the new connectivity standard. However, the company has since clarified that this technology will only be supported on upcoming laptop processors based on the Meteor Lake architecture.</p>

<p>While it is disappointing that the 14th-gen desktop processors do not support Thunderbolt 5, it is important to note that the technology is still in its early stages of development. It is not expected to be widely available until 2024, and it is likely that only high-end laptops will support it at first.</p>

<p>If you follow technology and Gizmochina closely, you&#8217;ve heard of Thunderbolt many times by now. If you haven&#8217;t heard of it or don&#8217;t know what it is, Thunderbolt is a high-speed input/output technology developed by Intel. It combines the features of several other technologies, including USB, DisplayPort, and PCIe, into a single connector and cable. </p>

<p>This makes it possible to connect a wide variety of devices to a computer with a single port, such as the popular Type-C port. Now, Intel has announced Thunderbolt 5, the next generation of its high-speed connectivity standard. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Thunderbolt 5: The Next Generation of High-Speed Connectivity</strong></h2>

<p>Thunderbolt 5 will deliver 80 Gbps of bi-directional bandwidth, which is twice the speed of Thunderbolt 4. It will also support Bandwidth Boost, which can temporarily increase the bandwidth to 120 Gbps for video-intensive applications. In addition to its increased speed, Thunderbolt 5 also doubles the PCI Express data throughput for faster storage and external graphics. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1024x576.jpeg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-567049" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-747x420.jpeg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5.jpeg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>It is also built on industry standards including USB4 V2, DisplayPort 2.1, and PCI Express Gen 4, making it fully compatible with previous versions of Thunderbolt and USB. Thunderbolt 5 is also designed to be more power efficient than previous versions. It can deliver up to 240 watts of power, which is enough to charge a laptop or power an external GPU.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="538" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-1024x538.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-567048" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-300x158.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-768x403.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-1536x806.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-696x365.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-1068x561.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1-800x420.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/intel-thunderbolt-5-1.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The bandwidth needs of content creators, gamers, and professionals are increasing significantly. These users want high-resolution displays and low-latency visuals while working with increasingly larger video and data files. Thunderbolt 5 has been designed to meet these needs, providing the performance and bandwidth required for the most demanding applications.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> is expected to offer a USB-C port with the upcoming iPhone 15 series models, marking a significant shift for the technology giant after sticking with its proprietary Lightning Port for a decade.</p>

<p>Now, a new report from well-known analyst <em>Ming-Chi Kuo</em> <a href="https://twitter.com/mingchikuo/status/1593052344841011201">indicates</a> that the next-generation Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models will feature a USB-C port with support for at least USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3, offering major advantages over existing models.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="575" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Apple-iPhone-14-Pro-3-1024x575.jpeg?x10805" alt="Apple iPhone 14 Pro Series" class="wp-image-496331" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Apple-iPhone-14-Pro-3-1024x575.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Apple-iPhone-14-Pro-3-300x168.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Apple-iPhone-14-Pro-3-768x431.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Apple-iPhone-14-Pro-3-1536x863.jpeg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Apple-iPhone-14-Pro-3-2048x1150.jpeg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Apple-iPhone-14-Pro-3-696x391.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Apple-iPhone-14-Pro-3-1068x600.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Apple-iPhone-14-Pro-3-1920x1078.jpeg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Apple-iPhone-14-Pro-3-748x420.jpeg 748w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Apple iPhone 14 Pro Series</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The Thunderbolt 3 port can offer bandwidth of up to 40Gbps while the Lightning connector, which supports USB 2.0 speeds, maxes out at 480Mbps on all the existing <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-iphone">iPhone models</a> available in the market.</p>

<p>Even when considering real-world scenarios, the Thunderbolt port support on the upcoming Apple iPhone series models will offer a significant performance boost and faster data transfer speeds. This will come in handy, especially when the user wants to transfer large files, such as images captured using the ProRAW mode on the iPhone.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s noteworthy that Apple is already offering <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/usb-c">USB-C ports</a> on most of the iPads for faster data transfer. The Apple iPad Pro powered by the M1 chipset has support for 40Gbps bandwidth, while the fifth-generation iPad Air is capable of transferring data at 10Gbps. On the other hand, the iPad Mini supports 5Gbps speed. The 10th generation iPad is the only one with a standard USB-C port, limited to USB 2.0 speeds.</p>

<p>Apple has been trying to distinguish Pro and non-Pro iPhone models, and with the iPhone 14 series, it has made several changes where most of the premium features are limited to the Pro series models. This will continue with the upcoming phones as well, and the USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt 3 support will be for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, while the standard <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-iphone-15">iPhone 15</a> and 15 Plus models will be limited to the USB 2.0 speed even with support for USB-C port.</p>
