Both Zepp Health and Mobvoi are Chinese manufacturers but they have strong roots outside their home country, thanks to their wide range of wearables that are also competitively priced and available in major markets across the globe.

This post will compare both smartwatches and also suggest which one is best suited for a user. First, let’s look at a spec-by-spec comparison of the two wearables:

Design and Display

Both smartwatches have a round dial but their designs are different. The TicWatch E3 has a smaller display attached to 20mm silicone straps but the watch is thicker than the Amazfit which uses 22mm silicone straps. The former’s case is also made from polycarbonate and glass fiber while the latter has an aluminum alloy case. There are two buttons on the TicWatch E3 while the Amazfit GTR 3 has a digital crown that can be rotated to navigate the watch alongside a secondary button.

Processor, RAM, and Storage

Zepp Health doesn’t say what processor powers the Amazfit GTR 3 neither is there a mention of the RAM. However, owners get 2.3GB of storage to store MP3 files. For the TicWatch E3, it has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100 and Mobvoi’s dual processor system along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage for apps, podcasts, and songs.

Software

This is a major difference between both smartwatches. The Amazfit GTR 3 runs Zepp OS which is a new operating system that is designed by Zepp Health for its smartwatches. It is a lightweight OS that has better power efficiency than the old Amazfit OS. It also brings new features such as support for mini apps. There is an app store inside the companion app where users can download more apps. However, the type and number of apps are limited when compared to what you get from the TicWatch E3 which runs the more powerful Wear OS and has an extensive library of apps.

This is also the right time to mention that both smartwatches have a smart assistant. The Amazfit GTR 3 has Amazon’s Alexa while the TicWatch E3 comes with the Google Assistant.

Sports and Health Tracking

If you are picking up a smartwatch, you are most likely doing so to stay fit and healthy, hence why the sports and health tracking features of a watch are important.

The Amazfit GTR 3 has support for over 150 sports modes. That is an enormous amount even if the average user may only use a fraction. Of these 150+ sports modes, it can automatically detect 8. It also has sleep tracking, sleep breathing quality tracking, all-day heart rate and blood oxygen level measurement, stress level monitoring, breathing rate, and female cycle tracking.

For the TicWatch 3, there is support for 20+ professional workout modes including high-intensity interval training, and has support for automatic detection via TicMotion. It also has 24/7 heart rate measurement and blood oxygen saturation detection, sleep tracking, stress monitoring, TicZen for relaxing, and TicHear to alert you of unsafe sound levels.

Connectivity and Sensors

The Amazfit GTR 3 has Bluetooth 5.1 LE, a compass, a barometer, an ambient light sensor, and support for five satellite navigation systems, but doesn’t have NFC and Wi-Fi. The TicWatch E3 has Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4GHz WLAN, NFC with Google Pay support, an off-body sensor, and support for three satellite navigation systems but doesn’t have a compass and barometer.

Battery life

There is a bigger battery inside the Amazfit GTR 3 and combined with its more power-efficient operating system, its battery life goes up to 21 days which is miles ahead of the 3-day battery life the TicWatch E3 boasts. Surprisingly, the TicWatch E3 lasts 10 days longer in its Essential Mode which is similar to the battery saver mode of the Amazfit GTR 3.

Other features

The TicWatch E3 has a microphone and a speaker, so you can not only take calls on the watch but can also ask the Google Assistant questions and get an audio response. There is only a microphone available on the Amazfit GTR 3, so you can’t receive calls on the watch.

Both smartwatches are compatible with Android and iOS devices, have replaceable straps albeit of different sizes, and are water-resistant.

Price

The Amazfit GTR 3 is priced at $179.99 and available in two colors while the TicWatch E3 is $199.99 and can be purchased in only black.

Conclusion

The two watches have their own strengths and weaknesses. Those who want a smartwatch with amazing battery life, are tied to the Amazon ecosystem, and need a watch that has a compass and barometer are better off purchasing the Amazfit GTR 3 as it ticks all of these boxes. It also costs less.

The TicWatch E3, which is pricier but regularly goes on sale and is even $169.99 on the official website as at the time of writing, has a more feature-rich operating system with support for full-fledged apps. It is also more powerful thanks to its Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor and packs more storage. Another merit is support for NFC and Google Pay so users can use their watch to make payments. Those who are tied to the Google ecosystem will also prefer it as they can control compatible devices from their smartwatch.

Since the operating system was announced back in May during Google I/O 2021, its official name has been kept under wraps until today.

A post published earlier today by Google has revealed that the unified platform will be officially known as Wear OS 3.0. It also revealed that the new version of the OS will be available as a system update to previous generation of smartwatches though that list is very limited.

Google says that the update will bring lots of new experiences and that the extent of these changes will require that users reset their watch to factory settings. Based on the aforementioned reason, Google says that it expects some users may not want to update to Wear OS 3, so it will make the upgrade available to users of eligible devices on an opt-in basis. Unfortunately, Google says that the update should begin to roll out “starting in mid to second half of 2022.”

The list of eligible devices is pretty short and includes Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch Pro 3 LTE, TicWatch E3, and other upcoming TicWatch devices. It also includes Fossil’s next-gen smartwatches coming later this year. In a nutshell, the supported devices are those powered by the Snapdragon Wear 4100.

Also, save for the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 series and the Pixel Watch, other smartwatches will most likely launch with the old version of Wear OS until the OS upgrade is available next year.

Google concludes by saying that older watches that can’t be upgraded will receive new features too such as Gboard and the revamped Play Store.

The Mobvoi TicWatch E3 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100 platform, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The smartwatch is rated IP68, showing strong water resistance. It also has several sensors for monitoring heart rate, oxygen levels, and so on.

The fitness challenge aims to draw new users to the Mobvoi TicWatch E3 and consists of three stages. Users will first show evidence of the purchase of the TicWatch E3 by unboxing and posting a challenge announcement via a tweet that must contain the unboxing video or picture. Participants must tag three of their friends and the official Twitter handle of Mobvoi @Mobvoi_Official, using the hashtag #hiitchallengewithTicWatchE3.

Once the correct tweet has been made, the participant can begin the fitness regimen using the TicWatch E3’s High Intensity (HIIT) exercise workout application. He must work out for a minimum of 20 minutes each day, with a minimum average heart rate of 130 beats per minute logged on the device every day for 21 straight days. The rules also include that the challenger must share the Watermark or Chart from the Mobvoi app on Twitter each day.

A participant who successfully completes the 21-day fitness regimen can then post a direct message to @Mobvoi_Official to verify the result. Upon verification, Mobvoi says a full $199 refund will be done within one month. Participants who are unable to have 21 consecutive days of activity posted may get a partial refund after verification.

Mobvoi encourages the participants to abide by the terms and conditions of the promo and the eligible countries where the promotion is available. The promo runs in the UK, US, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, and Singapore. The 21-day fitness challenge offers Mobvoi an excellent opportunity to add to its growing customer base for its smart wearable devices, highlighted by the HIIT application, among other great features.

TicWatch E3 Design and Specifications

The TicWatch E3 keeps the round dial design of its predecessor but save for that, differs in other ways. The display, which is housed in a polycarbonate frame, is smaller at 1.3-inches with a resolution of 360 x 360 and with 2.5D curved glass on top. There are now two buttons on the watch – one at 2 O’clock and the other at 4 O’clock. It also appears that Mobvoi has dropped AMOLED for LCD as the spec sheet doesn’t mention the screen type but describes it as a “High Density Display”.

It is important to mention that because the screen is smaller, the straps have also reduced in width from 22mm to 20mm, so your TicWatch E2’s strap won’t work with this but any third-party 20mm quick-release strap should suffice.

The key upgrade the TicWatch E3 brings is the Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor, the same one in the manufacturer’s high-end TicWatch Pro 3/TicWatch Pro 3 LTE. The SoC, which brings a faster and smoother experience compared to the Snapdragon Wear 2100, is paired with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage.

As expected, there is a 24/7 heart rate monitor and Mobovoi has also added a blood oxygen sensor for all-day blood oxygen saturation monitoring. You also have TicSleep for sleep monitoring, TicZen for stress monitoring, and TicBreathe for breathing exercises,. There is an option to share your health and fitness data with a loved one, and via TicCare you can also remotely monitor your loved one’s wearable data. The mobile app has been redesigned as shown below.

The TicWatch E3 has support for over 20 professional workout modes including football, swimming, basketball, pilates, taekwondo, and ice skating. You only get 21 workout modes out of the box with a promise for more via updates. A new feature that has been added is support for high-intensity interval training (HIIT) which means that the watch will be able to record workouts such as burpees, high knees, squat jumps, jumping jacks, reverse crunches, and planks. There is also TicMotion which automatically detects your workout and begins to track and record your health data.

The smartwatch has GPS, GLONASS, and Beidou positioning built-in. It also has NFC for Google Pay and support for music playback control. Users will be able to pair the watch to the TicPods 2 and TicPods 2 Pro+ for a completely hands-free experience, thus allowing them to issue voice commands to control playback.

The TicWatch E3 has a microphone and speaker, so you can take calls on it. It also has Google Assistant built-in and you can call up the assistant with the power button and control your smart home devices by speaking to the watch.

There is a 380mAh battery capacity inside it. While the battery life is not stated, there is an Essential Mode that automatically kicks in when the battery level falls below 5%. Owners will be able to customize when they want the feature to get activated.

TicWatch E3 Price and Availability

The TicWatch E3 is already available for purchase on the manufacturer’s website. It is priced at $199.99 in the US and €199.99 in Europe while other countries can purchase it from the global website for $229.99. The smartwatch which will launch as a successor to the 2019 TicWatch E2 has leaked ahead of its release, giving us a good look at its design as well as key specs.

We first learned of the TicWatch E3 in April when evidence of its existence was found in a teardown of the Mobvoi app. Last month, it was certified by the Bluetooth SIG and its certificate revealed it has the model number WH12068, connects via Bluetooth 5.0, and will run WearOS. Now, a Russian Instagram user by the name andrey_koftun has managed to get his hand on a unit before its announcement.

In the video, the smartwatch is shown to come in a white square box that has an image of the wearable as well as some specs printed on it. The smartwatch itself comes in black with matching silicone straps and there is a chance that will be the only color available as that is the only color its predecessor comes in.

The TicWatch E3 is a pretty thick smartwatch as it is significantly thicker than the OnePlus Watch which the leaker is wearing. For your information, the OnePlus Watch is 10.9 millimeters thick. There are two buttons on the side of the watch and the round display is covered in 2.5D glass.

The underside is home to four contact pins at the top which attaches magnetically to the included charging cable in the box. There are also five sensors for heart rate monitoring and blood oxygen level measurement. The source confirms that the watch has a microphone and speaker and we can see slits on the body for these features.

The display has a black bezel around it, and surprisingly, it is reported that it is not an OLED type. Under the thick body is a Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor, the same chip inside the TicWatch Pro 3. The smartwatch also has support for more than 20 workout modes and can also track stress, sleep, and VO2 max during workouts.

Mobvoi already announced that it has a launch scheduled for June 16 and there is a high chance that the TicWatch E3 will be announced on that day. We don’t know how much it will cost but we have a feeling it may be a little higher than the $159.99 launch price of the TicWatch E2.
