Since the operating system was announced back in May during Google I/O 2021, its official name has been kept under wraps until today.

A post published earlier today by Google has revealed that the unified platform will be officially known as Wear OS 3.0. It also revealed that the new version of the OS will be available as a system update to previous generation of smartwatches though that list is very limited.

Google says that the update will bring lots of new experiences and that the extent of these changes will require that users reset their watch to factory settings. Based on the aforementioned reason, Google says that it expects some users may not want to update to Wear OS 3, so it will make the upgrade available to users of eligible devices on an opt-in basis. Unfortunately, Google says that the update should begin to roll out “starting in mid to second half of 2022.”

The list of eligible devices is pretty short and includes Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch Pro 3 LTE, TicWatch E3, and other upcoming TicWatch devices. It also includes Fossil’s next-gen smartwatches coming later this year. In a nutshell, the supported devices are those powered by the Snapdragon Wear 4100.

Also, save for the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 series and the Pixel Watch, other smartwatches will most likely launch with the old version of Wear OS until the OS upgrade is available next year.

Google concludes by saying that older watches that can’t be upgraded will receive new features too such as Gboard and the revamped Play Store.

Mobvoi is rolling out a new firmware for the original GPS variant of the Ticwatch Watch Pro 3 with version number PYDA.200427.080.MRB.210114.001. The new update brings some new features, improvements, and also a couple of fixes.

Like any other new update, it is being pushed in batches. Currently, it is only available for 30% of the users. As per the company, it should reach 50% of users by February 3 and 100% by February 4.

Talking about the changes, the latest update adds an option to change the date format on the watch’s secondary FSTN (Film compensated Super Twisted Nematic) LCD screen, which the brand calls essential screen.

Further, the next two features are also related to this secondary display. Users can now turn on the backlight using the power button while in essential mode and also turn off the essential screen’s auto-backlight in the Essential Mode app. Lastly, notification sound can be enabled from Settings > Sound > Ring volume.

As for improvements, the new update improves the speed of the tilt to wake the screen by about 1/4 second, smoothness of sliding, and pairing speed when pairing with Android devices. It also optimizes the responsive area at the edge of the screen, reduces the backlight brightness of the essential screen, and solves an issue related to steps in the essential mode being partially lost after restarting.

Last but not least, the latest firmware update fixes the essential screen’s backlight not lighting up by tilt to wake issue and function key double click gesture waking up other apps instead of Google Pay bug.

Design-wise, the TicWatch Pro 3 adopts a similar design style as its predecessor. It has the rugged look for which Mobvoi’s smartwatches are known. In addition, the watch has a dimension of 45.1 x 45.1 x 12.6mm.

In terms of core configuration, TicWatch Pro 3 will use the Wear 4100 processor as stated earlier. The new Snapdragon Wear 4100 utilises a more efficient and smaller 12nm processor compared to 28nm used by its predecessor. Qualcomm says this makes for a “significantly faster new processor.” It also brings 25% improvement in the battery life and there is equally a faster LPDDR3 memory. The processor features quad-core A53 processors clocked at 1.7GHz for 85% faster performance and the graphics is powered by the Adreno 504 GPU which is 2.5x faster. There is support for up to 16-megapixel cameras while a lower-power 4G LTE modem is also onboard.
