Just a day ago, TikTok faced a ban in the US that prevented the service from over 170 million users. But within a day of the ban, this restriction has been lifted in the region. The company just shared the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) and showed its gratitude to US President Donald Trump.

TikTok Ban Lifted in the US

In a tweet, the social media giant shared an official statement where it thanked President Trump for helping TikTok in resuming its service to over 170 million American users. The company shared that the government provided the necessary clarity and assurance of no penalties being levied on TikTok for continuing its operation in the region. This would even allow over 7 million small businesses to also resume their operations via the short video sharing platform.

TikTok further added that this is a “strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States”. For those unaware, the US Supreme Court enforced a ban on the app if it failed to divest the app by 19th January 2025. The move sparked criticism from many as they argued that it violated free speech and undermined democratic values.

Donald Trump was basically the last lifeline for the company and it seems that the negotiations have gone in favor of TikTok. TikTok services officially began around 12 MP ET on Sunday, with a message on the app stating “Welcome Back!” while also crediting Trump for restoring service. There are no other updates regarding ByteDance linked apps like CapCut and Marvel Snap, so stay tuned for more updates.

TikTok has officially gone offline in the United States, marking the culmination of years-long debates and legal battles. The federal ban, enacted after Congress passed a law mandating TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, divest its U.S. operations, has effectively rendered the app inaccessible to its 170 million American users.

Trump Administration Hints at Possible Reprieve for TikTok

Users trying to access TikTok encountered a direct message: “Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S., which means the app is currently inaccessible.” This ban extends beyond TikTok to all ByteDance apps, including CapCut, Lemon8, and others.

This move has sparked criticism from free speech advocates, who argue that banning a platform of TikTok’s scale undermines democratic values. Pen America labeled the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the law as a troubling instance of government overreach. Meanwhile, national security concerns over potential data access by the Chinese government remain central to lawmakers’ defense of the ban.

TikTok’s last lifeline lies in the hands of President-elect Donald Trump, set to be inaugurated on January 20. Trump has indicated a willingness to extend negotiations, hinting at a possible 90-day reprieve. This could pave the way for alternative solutions, such as the revival of Project Texas, a $2 billion proposal designed to safeguard U.S. user data under the supervision of American companies like Oracle.

Meanwhile, alternative proposals are gaining traction. Start-up Perplexity AI has suggested a $50 billion merger with TikTok’s U.S. operations, while other bidders, including former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, have also expressed interest. However, legal experts caution that the federal law limits presidential power, leaving TikTok’s future uncertain.

As competitors like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts vie to capitalize on TikTok’s absence, the app’s U.S. shutdown could signify a seismic shift in the social media landscape. All eyes now turn to Trump’s administration to determine whether TikTok can stage a comeback or face permanent exile.

TikTok‘s recent legal maneuver has escalated its clash with the U.S. government. Filing a lawsuit against the Biden administration’s divestiture bill, the social media juggernaut contends that the legislation unfairly targets its platform. Beckman, TikTok’s U.S. public policy director, spared no words, labelling the bill as unconstitutional and forecasting dire repercussions for its vast user base of 170 million Americans and the 7 million small businesses reliant on the platform. In an internal chain of communication, Beckman pledged to mount a vigorous defense, stressing the safeguarding of free expression and economic opportunity.

The outcome of this legal battle will definitely have future repercussions

This legal battle is way more than just TikTok’s corporate interests, serving as a litmus test for the governance of online platforms and the protection of user rights. As TikTok braces for an all-out courtroom battle, its challenge carries broader implications for the regulation of digital spaces and the balance between governmental oversight and individual liberties. The outcome will definitely change things across the tech landscape, shaping the structure of future regulatory frameworks and influencing the behavior of other social media platforms.

At its core, this dispute encapsulates the tension between governmental authority and corporate autonomy in the digital age.
The US House of Representatives has reignited the debate over TikTok with a renewed effort to potentially ban the app or force its sale. This time around, the bill was attached to a critical foreign aid package, giving it higher priority and potentially expediting

The new version of the bill requires ByteDance to sell TikTok within a year

Previously, a similar bill passed the House in March but stalled in the Senate. This revised version offers TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, a year to sell the app if the bill is enacted, compared to the original six-month deadline. The House approved the bill with a strong 360-58 vote.

The bill now heads to the Senate, where a vote could happen as early as next Tuesday. Senate leaders are currently working on a timeline for the foreign aid package vote, which will determine the fate of the TikTok provision attached to it. President Biden has previously indicated his support for the bill if passed by Congress.

The legislation views TikTok as a national security threat due to its Chinese ownership. However, a potential ban faces strong opposition. With an estimated 170 million US users, according to TikTok itself, ByteDance is likely to challenge any such move. The company argues that a ban would violate user free speech rights, harm millions of businesses that utilize the platform, and negatively impact the US economy to the tune of $24 billion annually. Critics of the bill further argue that banning TikTok offers minimal protection for American user data.

After the state of Montana, TikTok is under fire again. This time around, Utah has taken a legal stance against the platform. The state alleges that the app not only misguides users about its safety measures but also engages children in potentially harmful social media habits.

While Utah isn’t the first state to take such action—Arkansas and Indiana have also filed similar lawsuits—it does highlight an urgent national discussion. As the U.S. Supreme Court contemplates the legality of state regulations on social media platforms, the Utah lawsuit could serve as a tipping point for nationwide policy change.

TikTok states that it has implemented 60-minute time limits for children

The lawsuit arrives on the heels of Utah becoming the first U.S. state to pass laws aimed at curtailing children and teens’ excessive use of social media apps, including TikTok. These laws, set to be enacted next year, will establish digital curfews and require parental consent for minors, making Utah a pioneer in this regulatory space.

While critics argue that these laws could infringe upon children’s privacy—potentially impacting vulnerable groups such as LGBTQ youth—the growing public health concerns are hard to ignore. Studies cited in the lawsuit indicate that children spending more than three hours a day on social media could face twice the risk of poor mental health outcomes. Given these troubling statistics, Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes argues that the app’s algorithm serves as a “cruel slot machine” that traps young minds.

In response, TikTok claims to have already implemented safety measures, including a 60-minute time limit for users under 18. However, the Utah lawsuit is demanding more—fines, penalties, and even alterations to the app’s “destructive behavior.” As the matter progresses, stay tuned for any future updates.

NYC Enforces TikTok Ban on Government Devices for Security

As of the directive’s issuance, immediate effect is given to the prohibition, forbidding city employees from downloading, utilizing, or accessing TikTok’s websites on any devices owned by the city.

In a statement to The Verge, a representative of the New York City government emphasized the importance of secure social media use for the city’s populace and acknowledged the consistent efforts of the NYC Cyber Command to safeguard the data of its residents. The directive aligns with guidance provided by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, which had previously curtailed TikTok’s usage on government devices. Moreover, recent federal legislation further supports the city’s stance against the application.

The concern stems from the app’s connection to Chinese tech giant ByteDance, raising worries that the app might facilitate data collection for potential surveillance purposes. Additionally, ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, is facing a lawsuit for collecting sensitive data, including face scans, through its app CapCut. These fears have led multiple U.S. states to limit TikTok’s usage on government-owned devices, and Montana notably went a step further by enacting a statewide ban.

TikTok has been partially or completely banned in the following countries: Afghanistan, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, India, and New Zealand. In the Netherlands, although not an outright ban, officials are recommended to avoid using it. Additionally, Norway has banned TikTok on governmental devices while allowing civil servants to use it on their personal devices for professional purposes.

New York City’s decision underscores the ongoing debate surrounding TikTok’s safety and its links to Chinese technology companies. While TikTok has maintained its commitment to user privacy and security, its association with ByteDance, coupled with concerns about potential Chinese government influence, has prompted widespread action to mitigate risks associated with the app’s use on government devices.

Montana’s recent move to ban TikTok within the state has ignited a legal challenge, raising constitutional questions and highlighting the ongoing national debate surrounding the popular social media app. The lawsuit filed by TikTok creators argues that the ban infringes upon their First Amendment rights and questions the state’s national security justification. This legal battle could have far-reaching implications.

The company stated its commitment towards defending its Users’ Rights

Montana’s ban on TikTok, signed into law by Governor Greg Gianforte, faces legal opposition from five TikTok creators. They argue that the ban is unconstitutional, violating their freedom of speech. The lawsuit challenges the state’s authority to advance foreign policy or national security interests and questions the notion of banning an entire communication platform. As the lawsuit unfolds, it will serve as a test case for the balance between state regulations and First Amendment rights.

We filed suit last night challenging Montana’s unconstitutional ban of TikTok, on behalf of 5 TikTok creators.

Montana’s Attorney General, Austin Knudsen, anticipates that the legal challenges to the TikTok ban will require federal court intervention. The lawsuit’s outcome will influence the ongoing debate surrounding TikTok’s presence in the United States and potential nationwide bans. With the ban slated to take effect in 2024, the litigation may impact the timeline or even lead to the law being struck down. The case holds significance for the protection of user rights and app restrictions.

While TikTok has not commented on bringing its own litigation in Montana, the company stated its commitment to defending its users’ rights both inside and outside the state. The legal challenge in Montana serves as a microcosm of the larger national conversation surrounding TikTok, its Chinese ownership, and data security concerns. The outcome of this lawsuit could potentially shape the future landscape of app restrictions, user rights, and government regulation regarding technology companies operating in the United States.

Montana’s TikTok ban has set the stage for a legal battle that raises fundamental constitutional questions. As the case unfolds, it will influence the nationwide discourse on app restrictions, user rights, and national security concerns.

In a move that highlights the ongoing debate surrounding TikTok‘s presence in the United States, Montana recently became the first state to officially ban the popular social media app. Governor Greg Gianforte signed a bill into law, effectively prohibiting TikTok from operating within the state starting in 2024. However, this decision is likely to face legal challenges that could potentially delay its implementation. Montana’s ban serves as a preview of the complex landscape that future attempts to restrict or ban TikTok may encounter across the country.

The Ban will likely be enforced starting 2024

Under the new law, TikTok will be barred from operating in Montana, and app stores will be required to block users in the state from downloading the app. While individual users are not directly targeted by the ban, both TikTok and app stores face daily fines of $10,000 for non-compliance. This legislative move puts a spotlight on the potential clash between state regulations and the protection of First Amendment rights. The trial was ongoing for quite some time now. Check out our previous coverage of the same here.

TikTok swiftly condemned the Montana law, claiming that it infringes upon the First Amendment rights of its users. A spokesperson for TikTok emphasized the platform’s positive impact, empowering hundreds of thousands of people across Montana. They reassured Montanans that they can continue to express themselves, earn a living, and find community on TikTok. This statement highlights TikTok’s commitment to defending its users’ rights both within and beyond the state of Montana.

Montana lawmakers, like officials in other parts of the country, expressed concerns about TikTok’s ties to ByteDance, a Chinese company. They argue that the app’s Chinese ownership poses risks to the personal data of American users. TikTok has consistently denied any intent to share user data with the Chinese government and has made significant investments in addressing data security concerns. Despite these efforts, lawmakers believe more stringent measures are necessary. The US government has even attempted to force ByteDance to sell TikTok to an American company to mitigate these concerns.

Montana’s TikTok ban offers a glimpse into what the future might hold for the app in the United States. If TikTok fails to comply with US government demands to sever ties with its Chinese parent company, it could face a nationwide ban, likely leading to yet another protracted legal battle. As the national debate surrounding TikTok’s presence and data security concerns continues, the outcome of these legal challenges will significantly shape the future landscape of app restrictions and the protection of user rights.

TikTok is a social media app that allows users to create and share short videos set to music or other audio. The app quickly became a global phenomenon, with over 1 billion active users worldwide. TikTok’s algorithm recommends videos to users based on their interests, making it a popular platform for discovering new content and trends. The app has also been the subject of controversy over privacy and security concerns, with the US constantly pressuring the owner of TikTok, Bytedance. As per the latest reports, the application is one signature away from being banned in a US State.

Montana is poised to become the first state to ban TikTok if Governor Greg Gianforte signs SB419, a bill that passed the state’s House by a 54-43 vote. If the bill is signed into law, TikTok will not be allowed to operate within the state, and app stores in Montana will be banned from offering it for download. The ban would go into effect in January 2022, but individuals who use TikTok in Montana would not be penalized.

The legislation cites concerns about TikTok’s “dangerous content” and “dangerous challenges,” as well as the potential for ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, to be forced to turn over user data to the Chinese Communist Party. The bill has been criticized by some as vague and virtually unenforceable, while TikTok has hinted at a possible lawsuit, citing First Amendment protections.

Montana is not alone in seeking to restrict the use of TikTok. More than half of the 50 US states have expressed similar concerns about the app. ByteDance has responded to US government requests to spin off TikTok’s US operations by proposing “Project Texas,” which would create a firewall around US data. However, some lawmakers remain unsatisfied.

Critics of the Montana bill, including technology industry group NetChoice and the American Civil Liberties Union, argue that it sets a dangerous precedent for government control over internet use and violates the US Constitution. NetChoice called on Governor Gianforte to veto the bill, while the ACLU labelled it as censorship that would unjustly limit Montanans’ access to a platform for free expression.

As the controversy over TikTok’s ownership and content continues, it remains to be seen whether Montana’s ban will be the first of many or a one-of-a-kind case in the US.

TikTok is a social media app that allows users to create and share short videos set to music or other audio. The app quickly became a global phenomenon, with over 1 billion active users worldwide. TikTok’s algorithm recommends videos to users based on their interests, making it a popular platform for discovering new content and trends. The app has also been the subject of controversy over privacy and security concerns, but it remains a popular platform for users of all ages to express themselves creatively and connect with others around the world. However, the said controversy is heightened in the US, with TikTok facing dire consequences in the near future.

The Biden administration is intensifying its efforts to force ByteDance to sell TikTok, just days before the app’s CEO is scheduled to testify in front of Congress. The United States government has reportedly “demanded” that ByteDance sell TikTok, a significant blow to the company, which has spent more than two years negotiating its future in the US with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). CFIUS has told TikTok that it wants ByteDance to sell its stake in the company, or the app could face a national ban.

This move follows the introduction of bills in both the House and Senate that would make it easier for government officials to ban TikTok and other services deemed to be a national security threat. Although TikTok has previously stated that divesting from ByteDance would not address the government’s concerns about data security, Bloomberg has reported that TikTok executives are considering the possibility of separating from ByteDance if the CFIUS talks were to fail. This latest threat of a total ban on TikTok is sure to increase pressure on the company and its CEO, Shou Zi Chew, who is set to appear before Congress for the first time next week.

TikTok recently got banned in more than 25 states from devices that were issued by government. This ban has now extended to include public/state schools, but it seems that this decision has resulted in some hefty backlash.

For those unaware, the popular short video sharing platform’s parent company (ByteDance) being situated in China has raised concerns for many. The app has been accused of stealing users’ personal data and even capturing keystrokes to learn passwords and other sensitive information. But despite all of this, there have been protest against the ban of this social media giant in public schools. As of right now, the ban on TikTok has been implemented in more than a dozen state run universities.

This includes the Auburn University, the University of Georgia, Oklahoma State University, and even the University of Texas, Austin. Similarly, it has also been banned in certain schools, with the app not being allowed to be installed on university owned devices. Meanwhile, there are also schools that have banned TikTok on their campus networks as well, while others are employing both of these methods to keep people away from the app.

The popular social media platform’s ban has caused both students and professors to protest. The protest spoke out against the restriction of the app. Kate Biberdorf, an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Texas stated that “I use TikTok as an educational tool to make science fun and accessible. To have that tool be taken away by a university, that doesn’t sit right with me. Right now in our community, it feels like our rights are being taken away, and this is another push in the wrong direction.”

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew was warned by the EU commissioner Thierry Breton over a video call recently. The commissioner clearly stated that the EU will use all possible means to safeguard the privacy of its citizen and, if needed, will ban the app from the European Union. EU wants TikTok to step up its act and comply with all the rules and regulations outlined in the Digital Services Act (DSA).

DSA which came into force in November 2022, is considered a Gold Standard for content and internet platform governance. It provides for multiple deterring sanctions, including a ban in the EU for repeated breaches of the Act that can be a threat to the life and safety of EU citizens. Non-compliance with the DSA may lead to hefty fines of up to 6% of the annual global turnover of companies.

Many provisions of the DSA only apply to platforms that have more than 45 million users in the EU. However, this threshold brings famous platforms like YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok under the purview of the Act.

TikTok was already discussing the policies on data safety, misinformation, and DSA compliance with the EU. Multiple meetings with the top brass of the company included topics like Child safety, Russian disinformation, transparency of paid political content, and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).

In the latest video call, commissioner Breton told CEO Chew “We will not hesitate to adopt the full scope of sanctions to protect our citizens if audits do not show full compliance,”. He further said that “With younger audiences comes greater responsibility. It is not acceptable that behind seemingly fun and harmless features, it takes users seconds to access harmful and sometimes even life-threatening content”

With more than 3 billion downloads, TikTok is the number one app in the world and the most famous among youngsters. But its Chinese origin brings a lot of concerns, especially in privacy and data safety. TikTok which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance has been accused of data harvesting and reporting it back to Chinese authorities through its parent company. Other issues include addiction concerns, misinformation, content censorship, spying, cyberbullying, etc.

The App is already banned in Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Azerbaijan. In the US, more than 20 states, the military, and congress have banned TikTok from government-issued devices. A potential ban in the EU could be catastrophic for the app.

US government employees can no long use the TikTok app on their officially issued smartphones. The popular short video sharing platform has officially been banned and staff can no longer install this app on their phones.

The Committee of House Administration or the COA has just informed its staff that the social media app is banned from being used on House issued mobile endpoints. As per the official emails, ” The Office of Cybersecurity has been deemed the TikTok mobile application to be a high risk to users due to a number of security risks.” Furthermore, anyone working in the agency will also need to remove the app immediately from their official handsets or risk being contacted by the COA Office of Cybersecurity.

The ban isn’t just limited to the COA but will also extend to other organizations and agencies within the US government. This news follows the recent spending bill that includes a more comprehensive ban that will prevent all federal issued devices from installing TikTok apps. For those unaware, the app is currently the most popular social media platform across many nations. However, it also faces criticism for being operated by ByteDance, which is a China based company and follows Chinese policy towards data management, privacy, and more.

Plus, it has also been accused on occasions for harvesting user data and other sensitive information as well. For this reason, the app still remains banned in India while various other governments, including the US have scrutinized and criticized the platform on multiple occasions.

For those unaware, the popular short video sharing platform was banned by the Indian government back in 2020. The government cited national security reasons for this ban and since then, TikTok has been unavailable in the region. But this might change soon as per an ET news report that cited sources close to the matter. Reportedly, the Chinese firm is in talks with Hiranandani Group for a partnership. This group is a Mumbai based firm that runs data center operations under the Yotta Infrastructure Solutions.

Apparently, the two groups are in talks and are at the exploratory stages. Although, the sources added that the union government officials have been informally details about these plans. Furthermore, a senior government official has apparently stated that “there have been no formal talks with us yet. But, we have been informed of the plans. As and when they come to us for approvals, we will examine their request.”

One of the reasons for TikTok being banned in India was due to the uncertainty regarding the storage of user data and its storage. Thus the government official stated that “Critical user data should not be stored outside India. All apps and websites have either made provisions to store data locally or are making necessary changes to their data storage and processing policies. If they (Tiktok) come back, they will have to follow these norms.”

According to a Bloomberg report, the talks regarding the possible acquisition of TikTok’s Indian assets was initiated by the Japanese conglomerate, SoftBank Group, as per sources close to the matter. SoftBank is a known backer of Glance’s parent company, InMobi Pte, and TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, as well. The sources stated that the discussions would involve four parties in total, including SoftBank, ByteDance, Glance, and finally the Indian authorities, which would have to approve of the deal.

For those unaware, the social media platform along with 59 other applications from China were banned by the Indian government, over security fears. This was also amid growing tensions between India and China, over military clashes at the Indo-Chinese borders. At the moment, SoftBank and ByteDance have yet to offer any statements regarding this news, while a Glance spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. Recently, the company even had to downscale its workforce in the Southeast Asian nation due to the indefinite ban.

Furthermore, it has also been attempting to resuscitate the popular app in the region, which was once one of its largest markets as well. Notably, if the deal were to go through, the Indian government would likely insist on the user data and technology being housed within its borders, due to strained relations between India and China. Meanwhile, China’s new regulations over export of technology would make the deal even more difficult as it would also require the Chinese government’s approval as well.

According to TheVerge report, a TikTok spokesperson confirmed that the company is reducing its workforce in India. In the statement, the representative told TheVerge that “Given the lack of feedback from the government about how to resolve this issue in the subsequent seven months, it is with deep sadness that we have decided to reduce our workforce in India… [We] hope to get the chance to relaunch TikTok in India to support the hundreds of millions of users, artists, story tellers, educators and performers there.”

In other words, over seven months after the social media app was banned from the region, the company is finally downsizing the Indian staff. At the moment, it is unknown how many employees TikTok will be retained in the country. Furthermore, a source close to the matter also added that “most” local employees are planned to be laid off. Although, the company has yet to clarify the news.

Previously, India was a large market for TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, with over 30 percent of TikTok’s downloads were from the nation. For those unaware, the social media platform was banned from the country back in June 2020 by the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology that accused the app on engaging “in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.”

For those unaware, President Donald Trump has been actively working to restrict Chinese owned social media platforms in the US. The reason behind this was national security, but the ban order had been put on hold due to court injunctions. Notably, WeChat and TikTok users have also argued that the ban was only motivated by election year politics rather than an actual security based risk, as per a Bloomberg report.

Editor’s Pick: Samsung reportedly confirms Galaxy Z Fold 3 launch in June 2021 and Galaxy Note line’s discontinuation

According to Robert O’Brien, “We’re now looking — those court cases are ongoing, so the federal government will wait and see what our courts tell us we can or can’t do with respect to those bans. I think ultimately the president’s authority with those bans on those apps will be enforced. And I think even if there’s a change in administration, those bans will take place.”

Interestingly, President-elect Joe Biden is set to take the office on 20th January 2020 and has promised to review the situation regarding the security risk posed by TikTok. Furthermore, the administration will also be reviewing other Chinese companies that have popular applications in the US “that are taking a lot of data from the American people,” O’Brien added. “We’re taking a look at those apps as well and there could be some action. We’ll have to see what the president decides to do.” Although, it is still too early to tell how the situation will play out, and we will have to wait for further development to know for sure.

In that, he assures them that the company is giving its best to resume operations in India. Further, he adds that the company is committed to complying with local laws which include data privacy and security requirements.

As per his statement, the company has not only clarified the concerns to the Government but is also willing to cooperate more in the future. He says that the company would remain dedicated to back its content creators and wouldn’t leave them out to dry. Looks like the company is optimistic about starting operations in the country soon.

For the unaware, the Indian Govt. banned Tiktok, a popular short video platform App, including 58 other Apps in June. However, the App’s parent company ByteDance Ltd., is hopeful for a comeback. It has about 2,000 employees in India to manage TikTok and Helo operations.

Following the Indian ban, a series of reactions emerged elsewhere leading to further bans in countries like the USA, Pakistan.
Although the company is fairly silent, it seems to be doing the groundwork correctly to prove that the App is not only the best but secure enough. Besides, the company is reportedly keeping its employee force intact by encouraging them with salary bonuses. And conducting an “annual performance review cycle”, in addition to improving their skills.

Unlike the situation in the USA, we aren’t exactly sure when and how exactly is TikTok making a comeback. Nevertheless, let’s just hope that the company satisfies the local regulations whilst making a strong comeback to its favorite market.

According to a WallStreetJournal report, the Commerce Department is backing down and delaying its implementation of the order, which was set to take effect on Thursday (12th November 2020). The order would have had the social media platform be banned from app stores offered by major companies, namely Google, Apple, and even Amazon. In other words, this would’ve effectively ended the US operations of TikTok.

Editor’s Pick: Apple iPhone 12 to bring strong earnings for Foxconn, firm to continue US investments

For those unaware, the Trump administration has been behind the action that was being taken against the ByteDance owned app. However, with changes in leadership after the recent US elections, it is unknown how Joe Biden will handle the situation regarding TikTok. Although, many members of Congress have already voiced their concerns regarding the Chinese app stealing users’ data and being a national security risk as well.

Furthermore, this isn’t limited to just TikTok, as it remains to be seen what stance and direction the newly elected President would take regarding the current state of the US and China relations. This news also arrives amid the lawsuit filed against the Commerce Department’s orders by popular TikTok users and the preliminary injunction towards the order by US District Judge Wendy Beetlestone.

This statement arrived after a federal judge halted the action.

According to a Reuters report, the commerce department stated that it intends to “comply with the injunction … but intends to vigorously defend the (executive order) and the Secretary’s implementation efforts from legal challenges.” Back in October, the US District Judge Wendy Beetlestone blocked the Commerce Department’s order that was set to take effect on 12th November 2020. This order would’ve effectively banned TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, from operating in the US

Editor’s Pick: LG may launch a smartphone with a rollable display within its Explorer Project

The Trump administration had also called out the social media application as a national security threat, with personal data being collected of over 100 million Americans that use the app. TikTok has strongly denied the allegations. Beetlestone’s noted that the “government’s own descriptions of the national security threat posed by the TikTok app are phrased in the hypothetical.”

Furthermore, another US District Judge Carl Nichols issued a preliminary injunction in a suit brought by ByteDance that also prevented the Commerce Department from ordering Apple and Google from removing the app from their respective app stores. At the moment, ByteDance is in talks for preliminary deals with Walmart and Oracle, either of which would oversee TikTok’s US operations. In other words, keep the app grounded within the US, which is something the US President himself approves of.

The reason is the failure in neutralizing the “immoral and indecent” content on the platform.

According to a report by Reuters, the PTA spokesperson, TikTok reportedly has 20 million active users in Pakistan. Also, it is the third most downloaded App in the country in the last 12 months according to Sensor Tower. The ban didn’t out of the blue as the company was reportedly warned back in July. And, officials reportedly demanded an effective mechanism for getting rid of the obscene content on the platform. However, looks like TikTok didn’t take enough measures to satisfy the officials.

Instead, the officials have reportedly been getting complaints from various sections of society regarding the vulgarity of content on TikTok. Add to this, Pakistan PM Imran Khan’s directions to PTA only speeded up the process. Reacting to this TikTok says it will the law in every country and is reportedly in touch with PTA to work things out. PTA also says that it is ready to review the ban. That is if TikTok puts a satisfactory mechanism in place to moderate unlawful content.

Pakistan, which has more customary social practices, has not only blocked TikTok but five other dating apps including Tinder and Grindr. Having said, it joins a list of countries including India, USA who have already blocked it. Although other countries cite security and data theft as reasons, Pakistan’s intention seems to be something else.

However, Global rights Watchdogs Amnesty International says people of Pakistan are denied the right to express in the name of vulgarity. Let’s wait and see if TikTok pleases PTA to get back into business.

This is in regard to recent news of Oracle becoming a technology provider for ByteDance’s popular short video sharing app.

For those unaware, Oracle was apparently interested in the acquisition of TikTok in the US, with ByteDance even submitting a proposal with the Treasury Department and is waiting for a response. However, Trump stated that the deal must be “100 percent as far as national security is concerned,” and that he would see the deal first before deciding on signing off on it, as per a CNBC report.

Since the looming threat of the complete ban in the US, ByteDance has been looking for various companies to strike a deal for the popular social media platform. Although, the recent statement from the US President makes the situation a bit more difficult for the TikTok owners since political differences between Washington and Beijing might affect the outcome of the deal being signed off.

Trump had also said that the government had looked into accepting payment as a part of the transaction but he further added that “Amazingly I find that you’re not allowed to do that. I said, ‘What kind of a thing is this?’ If they’re willing to make big payments to the government, they’re not allowed because there’s no way of doing that from a — there’s no legal path to do that.” The US President is also against ByteDance holding a majority stake in TikTok during the acquisition. Thus, it remains the be seen how the situation plays out, so stay tuned.

In a statement to reports, Trump said that “It’ll either be closed up or they’ll sell it. There will be no extension of the TikTok deadline.” TikTok has yet to comment on the matter. For those unaware, the Trump administration is seeking to ban TikTok, with the only saving grace being that ByteDance sells all of the US assets of the app within the country or stop their operation in the region completely.

Editor’s Pick: Apple could be working on foldable iPhone; orders samples from Samsung Display

Since then, numerous reports have surfaced pointing at other tech giants taking a possible interest in the acquisition of the short video sharing application. The reason for the ban was touted to be national security and data protection, as the government alleged that users’ information could be passed forward to the Chinese government. Although, TikTok has not complied with any request to share data with Beijing.

According to Republican Senator Josh Hawley, “I’m sure there are any number of backdoors that are built into the code and of course, ByteDance knows exactly what they are, so there needs to be a clean, clear, total separation.” At the moment, it is still unclear who would be acquiring the US assets of TikTok from ByteDance. So stay tuned as will be providing more updates.

With TikTok facing pressure from the Trump administration, the popular social media platform has to either sell itself or face a ban. At the moment, the social media app is valued somewhere between 10 to 50 billion US Dollars, although, this may fluctuate considering it is under political pressure and is forced into a vulnerable position.

According to TikTok, the app ban is just an election ploy being pulled by the government to gain favor and fuel the anti-China rhetoric in the country. The company has denied any allegations against it and its parent company ByteDance that are labeled as a national security threat, stating that they had taken “extraordinary measures to protect the privacy and security of TikTok’s U.S. user data.”

Furthermore, TikTok also claimed that the executive order that was passed earlier this month is a “broader campaign of anti-China rhetoric” which is leading up to the 3rd November 2020 presidential election, with Trump seeking a second term. In a blog post, the company stated that “We do not take suing the government lightly. But with the Executive Order threatening to bring a ban on our U.S. operations … we simply have no choice.”

Notably, in a recent filing report, TikTok revealed that is active monthly users have grown by 800 percent since January 2018. Back then, only 11 million Americans used the social media platform. Jump to 2019, and the figure had more than doubled with the userbase reaching 27 million. And finally in June 2020, amid the Coronavirus pandemic, the US monthly active user base count crossed 91 million in total, with more than 100 million Americans actively using the short video sharing app as of this month. So, the TikTok ban would not just affect the company and its employees but also its immense userbase.

The ByteDance owned social media platform expressed its surprise on Friday in a blog post and is seeking every and any possible options at the moment, including going to US Courts. Interestingly, there have also been talks regarding Twitter and TikTok considering a possible merger, according to a previous report. Although, it is still unclear if Twitter will actually pursue a deal to acquire TikTok’s US operations.

Trump has recently also signed an executive order which would prevent US residents and companies from doing business with TikTok and Tencent Holding’ WeChat app. The recent moves have all been aimed towards increasing steps and a campaign against China, right before the November 2020 elections. However, it would also cause millions of American TikTok users to be upset, especially those that built careers on the platform.

According to an NHK World report, a group of lawmakers is working to ban the use of TikTok and other apps that were developed by Chinese publishers. Like the other two nations, the Japanese lawmakers have also raised similar concerns regarding data security, with large sums of domestic data possibly ending up within the hands of the Chinese government.

The group is planning on submitting the proposal to the Japanese government by September 2020. TikTok, the short video sharing platform, has seen great success in Japan, despite being a tough market to get into. Data from the iOS store in Japan has revealed that TikTok has consistently ranked at the top among entertainment apps from across the globe. It currently holds the 5th most downloaded position.

TikTok spokesperson stated that “There’s a lot of misinformation about TikTok out there. TikTok has an American CEO, a Chief Information Security Officer with decades of industry, U.S. military and law enforcement experience, and a U.S. team that works diligently to develop a best-in-class security infrastructure. Four of our parent company’s five board seats are controlled by some of the world’s best-respected global investors.
In the ruling, the court asked TikTok to update their privacy norms accordingly and also act on the complaints within three to 36 hours. TikTok’s advocate Issace Mohanlal claimed the app has technology to filter the nude and pornographic content from the app.

Last Week, the Madras High Court passed an order to ban the video app in India. Acting on the court’s directive, India’s Information and Broadcasting ministry asked Google and Apple to pull down the TikTok from respective app stores in India. The TikTok ban affected its 120 million users, led to financial losses of $500,000 each day and even risked jobs of 250 employees in India.

After the recent court ruling, TikTok welcomed it in a statement: “We are glad about this decision and we believe it is also greatly welcomed by our thriving community in India, who use TikTok as a platform to showcase their creativity. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue serving our users better. While we’re pleased that our efforts to fight against misuse of the platform has been recognised, the work is never “done” on our end. We are committed to continuously enhancing our safety features as a testament to our ongoing commitment to our users in India.”

Whereas the plaintiff’s lawyer, K. Neelamegam said that they did not plan to further appeal against the latest court’s order. But will initiate contempt of court proceedings if TikTok does not meet the conditions set by the court.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology asked Google and Apple to take down the TikTok app from their respective stores in India.

The Court said it encouraged pornography and could risk child users from sexual predators. The video-sharing app faced a massive backlash due to issues like inability to quality control, abusive and pornographic content are among significant reasons. In recent times, authorities also found instances of cyberbullying using TikTokApp.

Bytedance challenged the High Court order in India’s Supreme Court citing freedom of speech rights in the country. In response, the top court referred the case back to the state court, where the company’s request was rejected and implemented a ban on the app.

TikTok is a video-sharing app allowing users to create short videos with special effects. Users can voice over popular songs, dialogues using the TikTok App. It claims to have 500 million users worldwide including more than 120 million in India. It’s a major rival to Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and other social networking sites.

The app was still available on Apple’s App Store till Tuesday’s midnight, but it is now entirely blocked in the country. Whereas, Google’s Play Store instantly blocked the downloads in India after receiving a request from the concerned Ministry.

The company employed around 250 people in India for app development and keeping a tap on the content. It is a sudden setback for Bytedance, and now it would be interesting to see how the company responds back.
