Timex has launched a new smartwatch in India called ‘Timex Fit’. The latest smart wearable from the watchmaker is priced at ₹6,995 for the silicon strap version and ₹7,495 for the metal strap variant. It is already up for sale on the company’s official website.

The newly launched Timex Fit is basically a glorified fitness tracker like any other so-called smartwatches. It is a better version of the company’s Timex Fitness Band that was released in November 2020.

The wearable sports a color display with touch input. Unlike most smart wearables in the segment, it has a temperature sensor, in addition to an optical heart rate sensor and an SpO2 sensor.

It supports 10 sports modes, namely Running, Cycling, Tennis, Yoga, Dance, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Hiking, Gym. It also has features like heart-rate monitoring, blood oxygen level monitoring, blood pressure monitoring, sleep tracking, app notifications, alarm, reminder, and a telemedicine feature to consult with doctors.

Further, the watch can be paired with both Android and iOS devices via a companion app called Timex Fit. But unfortunately, the watch only supports 10 watch faces and can merely last up to 6 days on a full charge.

Talking about the design, the casing is made of plastic and it is 35mm in size. Like most smart wearables, this one is also water-resistant up to 1m.

Last but not least, the unisex Timex Fit Smartwatch comes in two finishes and three colors. The metal strap version comes in Black ( TWTXW103T) and Rose Gold (TWTXW104T) colors. Whereas, the silicon strap variant comes in a single Black (TWTXW100T) color option.

Timex is one of the popular wristwatch brands in the world. The Indian subsidiary of the company called Timex Group India Ltd has launched a new product called Timex Fitness Band. Unlike most fitness trackers in the market, this one is targeted at fashionable customers just like the OPPO Band Fashion.

Timex Fitness Band Features & Specifications

The newly launched Timex Fitness Band sports an alloy casing and ships with a stainless steel mesh strap. However, interested customers can opt for an optional black-colored silicon band if required.

The fitness band comes in two colors namely Rose Gold and Black with model numbers TWTXB100T and TWTXB101T respectively.

The tracker comes equipped with a 0.96-inch color display with a resolution of 160 x 80 pixels and support for touch input. The type of the panel is not known but going by the 5-day battery life claim, it must be featuring an LCD panel.

Since Timex is a traditional watch brand, the company does go detail into the hardware specs and features of its fitness tracker. As per its website (via Mr. Phone), the tracker supports heart-rate monitoring, activity tracking, call/SMS notifications, and music control.

In a nutshell, the Timex Fitness Band is a basic fitness tracker with a classic design like no other in the category.

Huami, Friday, released its financial report for the fourth quarter and the entire 2019. The company reported some impressive gains in wearable shipment commanding an estimated shipment of 42.3 million units of both smartwatches and fitness bands for the entire year. This figure represents a Year-on-Year increase of 72.4%. The company generated a total of 2.114 billion yuan ($303.3 million) in the fourth quarter alone. However, the adjusted net profit after deducting cost was put at 213.8 million yuan ($30.7 million).

For the entire 2019, Huami’s overall financial performance was also impressive. The company recorded rapid growth in both revenue and profit. For the revenue, the company’s total revenue for 2019 peaked at 5.823 billion yuan ($ 834.9 million), representing an increase of 59.4% when compared with the revenue for 2018. Huami posted a net profit of 630.3 million yuan ($90.5 million), an increase of 32.8% Year-on-Year.

Most of the shipments were recorded in the fourth quarter where the company saw an estimated 14.7 million units sold. In comparison, Huami shipped 9.2 million units in the fourth quarter of 2018, representing a year-on-year increase of 59.8%. Total shipments for the full year of 2019 reached 42.3 million units, an increase of 53.8% compared to 27.5 million units for the entire 2018.

Huami’s founder and CEO, Huang Wang, stated that 2019 was a great year for the company. The performance makes Huami one of the leading brands in the smart wearable industry. Mr Huang also disclosed that Huami and Timex entered into a partnership for product development. The partnership has had its first product and it has gone on sale in North American market. The product is likely the Timex Ironman R300 which was launched recently as Timex’s first smartwatch. Also, Huami’s partnership with Xiaomi is still on course and the Mi Band 5 manufactured by Huami for Xiaomi is expected to be launched later this year.

Despite the current global economic impact of the Coronavirus epidemic, Huami is still optimistic in its forecast for the first quarter of 2020. The New York Stock Exchange-listed company forecast a net income of between 980 million yuan and 1.01 billion yuan. Compared to the 799.6 million yuan revenue generated in the first quarter of 2019, the company expects a YoY growth estimate of 22.6% to 26.3%.

Huami became a New York Stock Exchange-listed company in February this year but apart from bringing in some capital to grow the business, the effect of the NYSE listing on it smartwatch business in the U.S is yet to be seen. Apparently, the company is still struggling to gain a foothold on the lucrative US and global business terrain. That may have prompted the Chinese company to go into an agreement with Timex Group, as announced yesterday. Timex group is a global leader in watchmaking with experience spanning over 160 years. 

The new partnership will see both companies attempt to explore opportunities to develop new products and increase global presence in the smart wearables marketplace. Huami will leverage on Timex’s longstanding expertise as watchmakers while utilising its own cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology, App design and manufacturing capabilities, to develop a new generation of smartwatches that deliver on performance, style, craftsmanship and price.

In September last year, BlackBerry had confirmed that it won’t be building its own phones. China-based TCL reached an agreement with the Canadian firm in December last year and it confirmed that it will be producing BlackBerry branded smartphones. TCL has already launched BlackBerry KeyOne smartphone that has been received well by the audience and critics. In the last week, BlackBerry reached a patent licensing agreement with Timex. Speculations have it that the licensing deal could result in the debut of BlackBerry or Timex branded smartwatch

There is no information available on the different patents that are listed in the agreement between BlackBerry and Timex. The portfolio of the Canadian company has around 40,000 patents for technologies such as “wireless communications, networking infrastructure, acoustics, messaging, enterprise software, operating systems, virtualization and cybersecurity.”

Hence, the deal between the two firms does not necessarily mean that they will launch a smartwatch. The press release does not contain terms of the deal, but only includes a single information a that Timex is making on-going royalty payments to the Canadian firm for an unmentioned time period.

BlackBerry’s senior director of Intellectual Property Licensing, Jerald Gnuschke has claimed that the patent portfolio and the licensing agreement with Timex will allow them to concentrate on further opportunities in the mobile communications market. Sarah McKinney, the corporate communications officer with BlackBerry refrained from sharing any other information apart from what’s mentioned in the press release.

In the recent past, Timex has recently launched hybrid smartwatches such as the Timex IQ+ Move. Blackberry seems to be gradually entering the wearable market as it has provided its UEM software to Vuzix M300 smart glasses in August. Hence, the BlackBerry-Timex deal could mean that there could be a Timex smartwatch secured with BlackBerry’s software.

In related news, BlackBerry is expected to debut a new smartwatch in October. Several details on the upcoming BlackBerry phone that is codenamed as Krypton has been revealed by the rumor mill. Rumors have it that it the new phone will be introduced under the DTEK line of smartphones. The company is also rumored to be working another phone that is codenamed as Juno. The BlackBerry Krypton is expected to get unveiled in the next month. However, there is no information on the launch of BlackBerry Juno.
