<p>China has unveiled a new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/01/19/china-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hydrogen/supercapacitor train</a> capable of reaching speeds of 100 mph (160 km/h), making it the fastest hydrogen-powered train to date. The train jointly developed by state-owned industrial giant CRRC (the world&#8217;s largest rail vehicle manufacturer) and Chengdu Rail Transit is China&#8217;s first hydrogen-powered train passenger train. It offers a range of 373 miles (600 kilometers) and emits nothing but water, making it a zero-emissions train. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="682" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/worlds-fastest-hydrogen-powered-train-launched-in-china-1-1024x682.webp?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-510734" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/worlds-fastest-hydrogen-powered-train-launched-in-china-1-1024x682.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/worlds-fastest-hydrogen-powered-train-launched-in-china-1-300x200.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/worlds-fastest-hydrogen-powered-train-launched-in-china-1-768x511.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/worlds-fastest-hydrogen-powered-train-launched-in-china-1-1536x1023.webp 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/worlds-fastest-hydrogen-powered-train-launched-in-china-1-2048x1364.webp 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/worlds-fastest-hydrogen-powered-train-launched-in-china-1-696x464.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/worlds-fastest-hydrogen-powered-train-launched-in-china-1-1068x711.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/worlds-fastest-hydrogen-powered-train-launched-in-china-1-1920x1279.webp 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/worlds-fastest-hydrogen-powered-train-launched-in-china-1-631x420.webp 631w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>One of the main features of this <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/01/19/china-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">train</a> is its autonomous driving capability, which is enabled by 5G communication technology. The train also has the ability to wake up, start, stop and return to the factory automatically. While Germany is currently the leader in hydrogen trains, with 14 in service, the CRRC trains are able to beat German trains at speeds of around 20 km/h (12 mph). However, German trains currently have a much greater range of around 620 miles (1,000 km).</p>

<p>It is worth noting that while Japan and South Korea have been the most vocal countries promoting green hydrogen as a transportation solution, China is currently leading the way in terms of actual hydrogen refueling station deployment. According to Information Trends statistics, there are only more than 1,000 hydrogen refueling stations In the world, about a third of them are in China.</p>

<p>The move by China is significant because the country, which controls much of the lithium battery supply chain, is now quietly developing hydrogen at top speed. Pushing for an electric revolution seems sensible as lithium crunch threatens to soar prices and thwart it Hydrogen alternatives are early.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/china/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">China&#8217;s hyperloop project</a>, which aims to develop ultra-fast land transport technology, has successfully completed its first test runs using a full-sized passenger capsule. The test runs took place at a superconducting maglev test line in Datong, Shanxi province, and the capsule reached speeds of up to 50km/h, travelling a distance of 210 metres each time. </p>

<p>The project aims to eventually carry passengers and cargo at a speed of 1,000km/h or faster in a near-vacuum tube, which would make it the fastest ground-based transport technology in the world. The test runs were conducted by defence contractor <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/china/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">China</a> Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), which built and operates the facility. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-1024x683.jpeg?x10805" alt="China hyperloop" class="wp-image-509711" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-696x464.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-1068x712.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-630x420.jpeg 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test.jpeg 1098w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>CASIC reported that critical components, including superconducting magnets, high-power electric systems, AI safety controls, wireless communication devices, and sensors all worked as planned during the tests, paving the way for future experiments at higher speeds. The idea of a &#8220;hyperloop&#8221; tube train was first proposed by SpaceX founder <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/elon-musk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Elon Musk</a> in 2012, and he established The Boring Company to bring the idea to life. </p>

<p>Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson also joined the race with a similar venture, Hyperloop One, in Los Angeles. However, both projects have faced financial and technical challenges, with Hyperloop One reportedly laying off more than 100 employees and abandoning the idea of transporting humans, and The Boring Company dismantling its test tunnel last year. China was late to the hyperloop game, as CASIC did not break ground on the Datong facility until April of last year. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="466" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-2-1024x466.jpeg?x10805" alt="China hyperloop" class="wp-image-509712" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-2-1024x466.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-2-300x137.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-2-768x350.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-2-1536x699.jpeg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-2-696x317.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-2-1068x486.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-2-922x420.jpeg 922w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/chinas-hyperloop-successful-passenger-test-2.jpeg 1917w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>However, it took less than a year for the project team to complete its first test run after the start of construction, which China Space News attributed to innovation and strong government support. The test facility&#8217;s tube currently measures 2km in length and is expected to be extended to 60km over the next few years to achieve a top speed of 1,000km/h.</p>

<p>CASIC has been involved in the development of advanced weapons systems, including rail guns and the DF-17, China&#8217;s first hypersonic missile to enter service. Some military experts believe that new technologies developed at the Datong hyperloop facility, such as electromagnetic propulsion and power management systems, could be used for defence.</p>

<p>China&#8217;s Beijing Metro Line 5 has now announced a pilot project that includes several sef-developed smart technological products. One of such products is the &#8220;Smart Turnstiles&#8221; which began as a pilot project on Christmas day installed in the Dongdan Station of Beijing Metro Line 5.</p>
<p>It is understood that traditional subway turnstiles are large in size, and the use of beam sensors to identify pedestrians not only has low accuracy, but also easily causes problems such as trapping, missing people, and fare evasion. These new gates are equipped with a set of binocular cameras at the top. The cameras deploy binocular vision technology and can accurately identify humans and objects. This helps to protect the safety of people and objects. There is also an effective anti-pinch technology which prevents injuries.</p>
<p>The gate also adds high-precision reverse intrusion, trailing, parallel, and other fraud detection and real-time image recording for evidence to standardize uncivilized rides.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_362098" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-362098" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/beijing-metro-line-5-2.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-362098" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/beijing-metro-line-5-2.png?x10805" alt="" width="640" height="483" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/beijing-metro-line-5-2.png 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/beijing-metro-line-5-2-300x226.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/beijing-metro-line-5-2-80x60.png 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/beijing-metro-line-5-2-557x420.png 557w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-362098" class="wp-caption-text">Display screens on the doors of the Beijing Metro line 5</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>The new generation Smart Turnstiles has a length of 1400mm and is 180mm wide. This is said to be 30% and 10% smaller than traditional turnstiles. This will also help in space management within the station.</p>
<p><div class="su-note" style="border-color:#e5e5e5;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><div class="su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim" style="background-color:#ffffff;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a title="ZTE Axon 20 5G survives JerryRigEverything’s durability tests" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/24/zte-axon-20-5g-survives-jerryrigeverythings-durability-tests/" rel="bookmark">ZTE Axon 20 5G survives JerryRigEverything’s durability tests</a></strong></div></div></p>
<p>Another important part is that the subway staff can easily switch the two-way channel function settings and categories according to the changes in the real-time passenger flow situation, further improve the efficiency of the passage, and ease the pressure during peak passenger flow.</p>
<p>The &#8220;binocular side door&#8221; also has the function of ordinary gates for ticket checking, which is convenient for wheelchair passengers to enter and exit the station. At the same time, it also supports the station staff to take snapshots where needed.</p>
<p>This is indeed an innovative product. It is one of the many technological products that the Beijing Line 5 is popular for. According to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_5_(Beijing_Subway)" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Wikipedia</a>, the Line 5 is the first subway line in Beijing to have platform screen doors in underground stations and automatic platform gates in elevated stations that prevent riders from falling onto the tracks. Line 5 stations also have LCD screens that display the wait times for the next train. Line 5 trains have digital voice announcements (in Mandarin and English) and LCD passenger information display.</p>
