<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/twitter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Twitter</a> is set to introduce a new feature in May that will allow media publishers to charge users on a per-article basis. According to a tweet by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/elon-musk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Elon Musk</a>, Twitter&#8217;s CEO, this new platform will enable publishers to offer access to their articles for a one-time fee, as opposed to purchasing a full subscription. This feature is expected to be a &#8220;win-win&#8221; for readers and publishers, with readers having the flexibility to pay for occasional articles they find interesting while publishers generate revenue from individual articles.</p>

<h2>Twitter&#8217;s new feature will let you pay for articles you actually want to read</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/elon-musk-twitter-1024x683.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-533870" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/elon-musk-twitter-1024x683.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/elon-musk-twitter-300x200.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/elon-musk-twitter-768x512.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/elon-musk-twitter-696x464.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/elon-musk-twitter-1068x712.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/elon-musk-twitter-630x420.webp 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/elon-musk-twitter.webp 1533w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Credit: Slate</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Details on the new feature remain sparse, including Twitter&#8217;s commission percentage on each transaction, the launch date, and the criteria that media outlets must meet to participate. However, Musk&#8217;s announcement has generated buzz in the tech industry, with many speculating on the potential impact of this new feature on the future of media publishing.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Rolling out next month, this platform will allow media publishers to charge users on a per article basis with one click.<br><br>This enables users who would not sign up for a monthly subscription to pay a higher per article price for when they want to read an occasional article.…</p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1652349875017879552?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 29, 2023</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
</div></figure>

<p>This move by Twitter follows a series of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/04/24/twitter-verifies-some-celebrities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">controversies</a> surrounding the social media platform, including the restoration of former US President Donald Trump&#8217;s account, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/09/twitter-blue-4000-character-tweets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rollout of the Twitter Blue program</a>, and the recent <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/04/21/twitter-removing-blue-checkmarks-verified-accounts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elimination of the verification program</a>. Musk has addressed these issues in various forums, including his recent appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher, where he defended his decisions and argued that he had to take drastic action to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/03/27/twitter-valuation-drops-to20-billion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">avoid Twitter&#8217;s bankruptcy</a> after acquiring it for $44 billion.</p>

<p>The introduction of per-article charging is a significant development for Twitter and the media industry, as it offers an alternative revenue stream for publishers and enhances the platform&#8217;s offerings for readers.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-332377" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screenshot-450.png?x44794" alt="" width="1167" height="770" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screenshot-450.png 1167w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screenshot-450-300x198.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screenshot-450-768x507.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screenshot-450-1024x676.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screenshot-450-696x459.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screenshot-450-1068x705.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screenshot-450-637x420.png 637w" sizes="(max-width: 1167px) 100vw, 1167px" /></p>
<p>In a Tweet, Twitter confirmed that From Today i.e., February 17, it will start rolling out the feature in a phased manner. That means it could while to reach everyone as the company completes the testing. Anyway, once received, you can just select a chat in DM(Direct Message) and start recording your voice.</p>
<p>Inside the chat, you will see a &#8216;Voice Icon&#8217; at the bottom next to the Text Editor section. Clicking on it will start recording your voice. As shown in the teaser below, Twitter is giving just 140 seconds for the Voice message as the limit.</p>
<p>If you recall, Twitter started <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/09/twitter-expands-testing-of-spaces-feature-including-a-few-users-in-india/">testing its &#8216;Spaces&#8217;</a> in India a few days ago. The Beta Testing will include as many as 3,000 more people including India. This is a clubhouse-like alternative voice chat room that is likely to roll out for everyone later this year.</p>
<p>Coming back, after recording it, press the Stop button to save the Audio. This Audio clip will now appear below with a &#8216;Send&#8217; button to the right and a &#8216;cancel&#8217; button to the left. You can do press the either to send/discard the voice message respectively.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">

<p>PS. The experiment will be rolled out in phases. <a href="https://t.co/aqQM6h9sof">pic.twitter.com/aqQM6h9sof</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Twitter India (@TwitterIndia) <a href="https://twitter.com/TwitterIndia/status/1361900922465644544?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 17, 2021</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>Although the process is similar on Android/iOS, users on the latter can reportedly record it by Long-pressing the voice button to record and swipe it up &amp; release to send the message(courtesy of <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/twitter-testing-voice-messages-dms/">XDA</a>). Currently, desktop users can listen to the messages but cannot send any voice message.</p>
<p>As for availability, it will be available to the users of India, Brazil, and Japan. Obviously, we can expect this to expand to other countries in the future.</p>
