The Chuwi UBook Pro features a power-conservative Intel Core m3-8100Y CPU and despite the slim profile of the 2in1 laptop, it should have a great battery performance. But, does it? Let’s see in the battery life test of UBook Pro.

Office scene

The first test is a simulation of office work, based on web browsing and document editing. As the device is mostly addressed to office personnel and students, it is the most important of all. As seen in the video below, 30min of web browsing consume 7% of the battery and 30min of document editing consume 5%. This means that you can go on for about 7 hours on a full charge.

Entertainment scene

Moving on to media consumption and gaming, the device lost just 13% of charge after 45min of online music playback while another 45min of 4K video playback consumed just 20% thanks to the UHD Graphics 615 GPU that supports hardware 4K decoding. That means about 4 continuous hours of 4K video playback on a single charge.

During the gaming test, the Core m3-8100Y processor proved to be quite powerful providing smooth experience during League of Legends gaming. It is not the heaviest gaming on earth but on the other hand, UBook Pro isn’t a gaming laptop either. During gaming, the battery went down just 22% in 30min.

Conclusion

After the test, UBook Pro still had 33% of battery left. According to the power consumption ratio calculated in the bar chart, UBook Pro can last 10 hours of office software usage or web browsing for 7 hours for every single charge. Obviously, the 38wh battery will take you through the day without the need for a recharge. Nevertheless, it supports PD quick charging, which can quickly restore full power without worrying about low battery.

Chuwi released its new 2in1 tablet, UBook Pro, on Indiegogo and according to the company it is a very powerful all-around machine. It is mainly designed for office work as well as students, it comes with a 12.3″ IPS display and 3:2 screen ratio as well as the Intel Core M3-8100Y CPU that allows a 50% performance boost over the previous UBook. But how powerful is it when benchmarked? Let’s see in the benchmark test we conducted recently.

CPU-Z

We used the CPU-Z application to see the specs of CPU and do a benchmark test. As you can see, it comes with the already mentioned Intel m3 8100Y. The processor is made using the 14nm manufacturing process and it’s a dual core/4-thread CPU. It’s frequency can go up to 3.4GHz and it achieved a single-core score of 283.5 and a multi-core score of 800.9.

GeekBench 4

To continue, we ran the GeekBench 4 test where the UBook Pro achieved a single-core score of 3731 and a multi-core score of 6115, consistent with the performance we already shaw in the CPU-Z test.

Cinebench R15

After the first two tests, it was time to test the GPU too. For that reason, Cinebench R15 was chosen as it is a comprehensive CPU and GPU performance testing software. It tests CPU and graphics card performance by rendering high-precision images and 3D graphics based on the Cinem4D engine. In this test, the UHD Graphics 615 that is the embedded GPU scored 96cb and 27.18fps. That’s not bad but there’s no comparison between an embedded GPU and a dedicated one.

AS SSD Benchmark

Then, we tested the SSD speed in order to define how it compares against other solutions in laptops. The UBook Pro achieved a continuous read and write speed of 480.61MB/s and 372.74MB/s respectively which might be more than five times the speed of the traditional HDD but it falls a bit short when compared to other commercial solutions. Definitely, you are not going to experience any slow-downs attributed to the SSD so you shouldn’t be worried about not getting the top speeds out there.

Besides the test through benchmarks, the overall user experience was excellent during the time we got our hands on it. It can easily deal with daily office, learning and entertainment need and if you are desperate to use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, etc, it will do the job but much slower than media editing professional laptops. What’s more, you can even enjoy some gaming like Tomb Raider and Metro with decent performance and graphics quality but gaming isn’t what this device was made for.

To conclude, combining the benchmark results with the actual user experience we can say that the Chuwi UBook Pro is definitely a good choice at its price range since it manages to balance between performance and pricing perfectly. Almost since laptops hit the market many, many years ago, the preferred aspect ratio that manufacturers use is 16:9 or 16:10 in some cases. The company that disrupted the market and introduced a 3:2 display was Microsoft with the Surface Pro series, but few companies have revamped their PC lineup to follow Microsoft’s lead, which is really a shame, as it is a much more comfortable aspect ratio for an office productivity laptop.

Thankfully, smaller manufacturers seem to think otherwise as the Chinese manufacturer Chuwi chose to go with this format in their latest 2in1 laptop UBook Pro. The device will launch soon on Indiegogo crowdfunding platform featuring a 12.3″ display with a 3:2 aspect ratio.

This is a big course shift over the previous-gen UBook as Chuwi chose this aspect over their previously used 16:9 because they say it falls right in between 4:3 and 16:9, which are the two most common aspects in reading and media. In other words, they’re billing it as the best intermediate solution. Little black bars won’t be too distracting in video playback, but web pages, magazines and especially PDFs feel way more comfortable while reading or editing.

Even if smartphones are starting to increase the aspect ratio up to 21:9 as Sony did with the Xperia 1, the result is the same: besides the fact that it is convenient when watching videos in landscape mode, users want more vertical space when browsing webpages since more content is visible.

Compare that experience to reading a web page on a 16:9 screen with copious amounts of scrolling, and it is not hard to see the benefits. As a matter of fact, Sony does the same thing as Microsoft and Chuwi even if it’s not that obvious, as most tech sites focus on video playback.

The bottom line is it’s a pity that most laptop makers haven’t opted for the 3:2 aspect ratio. Video playback is something many users care about but mainly in media consuming devices like tablets and smartphones and less in laptops that for millions of users are a productivity tool. Laptops are used to read, write, remember, create, connect, and communicate and in this regard, Chuwi’s choice is totally justified.
