Nokia Lumia 1020 was an interesting device. It came with a very large sensor at the back, a 41MP camera which could click pictures better than most other smartphones in the market. Like all other Lumia devices, it ran Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS.

However, looks like Lumia 1020 can run Ubuntu OS as well, atleast one of the Weibo users proved that it was possible. Team Ubuntu which is usually behind a number of leaks online, released some pictures earlier today claiming that they made their Lumia 1020 run Ubuntu.

As you can see in the pictures added in the post, the Lumia 1020 is running on Ubuntu OS which is very similar to the desktop version that we have seen in the past few years. The menu bar is on the left, which is the same as the taskbar on Windows desktop while the settings bar is on top which has the volume level indicator, Wi-Fi as well as the settings option. If you have ever used any of the recent Ubuntu desktop releases, you would see that the OS is very similar to the one shown in the pictures.

We still don’t know whether everything works on this Lumia 1020. It would be interesting to see how the OS handles the large 41MP sensor at the back and whether the pictures captured are of similar quality as that of the Windows running device. We hope to see more details soon.

Ubuntu for mobile isn’t a new concept. Canonical, the company behind the OS has been trying to release Ubuntu powered smartphones for the past one year, however the launch has been delayed so far. According to the latest news, the first true Ubuntu powered smartphone will release in Europe in the second week of February. This budget phone will be sold directly to customers via the Spanish carrier Bq.

For those interested in this new OS for mobile platforms, currently, there is a way to try out Ubuntu. You can install the OS on a number of Google’s Nexus devices. Some of the supported phones include the old Nexus 4, Nexus 7 2013 tablet and the Nexus 10.

After we’ve covered the news about Ubuntu Mobile OS and Ubuntu Smartphone recently, is now Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu Mobile OS is preapring their own hardware through UBuntu Edge smartphone.

But noe the Ubuntu Edge is need fresh money and they trying to collect the money through funding project using Idiegogo, they need more than $32 millian USD to producing 40,000 units of Ubuntu Edge. But some analys says that Ubuntu Mobile OS have to compete in mobile industry and trying to “figt” with other platform.

Ubuntu Edge crafted from cool, textured amorphous metal, the Edge has a distinctive, precise look but its rakishly chamfered edges are shaped to fit naturally in the palm — our design prototype already has a wonderfully solid feel. It’s the right size, too. Edge gestures are the next big thing in mobile, and our testing has found that a 4.5 inch screen is ideal for comfortable control of all four edges with one hand.

Interestingly, this phone can running on dual OS, one running on Ubuntu Mobile OS and the user can installed the Android OS, and when the device is hooked to LCD screen, the smartphone will becoming a mini CPU and running Ubuntu desktop operating system and regular Ubuntu applications.

Here are the specs of Ubuntu Edge smartphone:

Dual boot Ubuntu mobile OS and Android

Fully integrated Ubuntu desktop PC when docked

Fastest multi-core CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB storage

4.5in 1,280 x 720 HD sapphire crystal display

8mp low-light rear camera, 2mp front camera

Dual-LTE, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4, NFC

GPS, accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass, barometer

Stereo speakers with HD audio, dual-mic recording, Active Noise Cancellation

MHL connector, 3.5mm jack

After introducing Ubuntu smartphone some time ago, Canonical’s Ubuntu operating system is now launched for tablets. With this launch, customers will also receive additional variations of gadgets, especially with the open source OS.

Ubuntu Tablet OS is also offering several features that are intended to eventually be able to compete with Android tablets. The most important feature is multitasking capability with Side Stage feature. Side Stage contains applications such as the mobile phone format. This section also takes a part of the screen.

As with Android Jelly Bean operating system , Ubuntu for tablet also comes with a multi-user feature. In addition, there are also Guest Mode features. Additionally, this tablet also has support for voice search.

For minimum specifications, low Ubuntu tablet uses a dual-core ARM Cortex A15, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory and a 7 inches to 10 inches screen size. As for high end tablet, could use a quad-core ARM Cortex A15 or Intel x86, 4GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory.

Furthermore, assume that Canonical Ubuntu tablet matches the high end with a screen measuring 10 to 12 inches. In addition, Ubuntu-based tablets can also be used as a PC by adding a keyboard and tablet.
