The search engine giant had previously stated that it plans on overhauling the launch of its upcoming flagship series. We know that the Pixel 6 series will feature the brand’s new and proprietary Tensor processor. Now, we have a first look at the Pixel 6 series under display fingerprint scanned that was spotted on Twitter. The screenshot of the lockscreen of the Pixel 6 was shared by Hiroshi Lockheimer, head of Google’s Android division.

In the tweet, the Android official stated that he was trying out new wallpaper combinations with Android 12’s Material You theming engine. In this screenshot, you can see that the device sports an under display fingerprint sensor icon right below the clock widget. Unfortunately, the executive deleted this tweet soon after posting it. Although, XDADevelopers Editor in Chief, Mishaal Rahman, reposted a copy of Lockheimer’s deleted tweet on his own account (Via AndroidAuthority).

Furthermore, the screenshot had a resolution of 1,440 x 3,200px, however, Rahman clarified that the actual screen resolution of the Pixel 6 will be 1,140 x 3,120px. Another notable aspect noticed in the screenshot is the Verizon’s 5G network as well. As of right now, this is all the information we have to go on for now, so stay tuned for more updates regarding the upcoming Pixel 6 series.

According to a TechRadar report, developer kdrag0n spotted the mention of ‘UdfpsControllerGoogle’ in the code from the second Android 12 developer preview. The ‘udfps’ stands for an under display fingerprint scanner, which was a part of the com.google.android.systemui path that suggests that the feature might be arriving for a future Pixel device. This also implies that the feature is being developed for Pixel smartphones, instead of the feature being generally supported by Android OS.

Keep in mind that this does not confirm that the search engine giant will be launching a Pixel with an under display fingerprint scanner, but it does hint at it. With support for the feature being included in Android 12, we might see the Pixel 6 arrive with this feature, along with the latest iteration of Android OS as well. Previously, reports had also emerged that the company might be using a combination of an in display fingerprint scanner and facial recognition system, to unlock the device.

Another new feature noticed in the Android 12 beta, the company made certain changes to its dark mode. At the moment, Pixel devices offer a black background, but the newer update changes the backgrounds of supported apps to gray. This is an odd move considering that the darker color would be more effective in lessening the battery consumption on an OLED display.

Sources say the manufacturer’s second major flagship phone which will launch in the second half of the year will come with Qualcomm’s own under-display fingerprint scanner.

Almost a year ago, the chip manufacturer released plans for its under-display fingerprint scanner scheduled to launch in commercial devices by Summer 2018.

Qualcomm’s fingerprint sensor is said to be three times more expensive than regular capacitive sensors but is actually thinner at 0.44mm. It can also work under glass up to 800µm thick (1200µm according to Qualcomm’s own infograph from last year) unlike a capacitive fingerprint scanner that works with thickness between 200µm and 300µm.

It is also reported that we may not see the iPhone X‘s Face ID sensor replicated in Chinese phones as the sensor cost as much as $60. This will significantly drive up the final cost of the phone. It is also said that the technology requires lots of work with respect to software and hardware integration.

Another reason is that locally manufacturers may infringe on patents especially for Chinese phones that are sold in other markets. So, the plan is to launch phones with the same face unlock security as Apple’s Face ID locally first. This will help gauge reception and reduce risks of failure. While other models sold outside China will feature under-display fingerprint scanners.

While earlier reports suggested that it could pack under-display fingerprint sensor, that no longer seems to be the case.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities, South Korean tech giant Samsung is unlikely to introduce under display fingerprint sensor in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 9 smartphone. The reason being cited is that the ultrasonic and optical solutions don’t meet the company’s standards of employing a biometric technology.

In a note to investors, Ming-Chi Kuo said, “According to our understanding of the technologies, under-display fingerprint solutions may currently have many technical issues (e.g. screen protectors and different environments affecting recognition rates and power-consumption).”

He further casts doubts over the technology’s commercialization because of the supposed cancellation of Samsung’s under-display solution. He adds that he does not expect to see the mass market adoption of the technology until the first half of 2019. Several experts say that the newly introduced in-screen fingerprint sensors have poor accuracy and durability compared to the traditional ones.

Even Apple was reported to be working on some kind of under display fingerprint sensor technology for the iPhone X, but the company nixed those attempts and instead chose to move forward with the Face ID after seeing its potential.

Now, instead of the under display fingerprint sensor, the upcoming flagship smartphone from Samsung under its Note-series is expected to feature the traditional fingerprint sensor on the back panel, just below the camera module — similar to what we saw on the recently launched Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

The phone is also expected to have some kind of facial recognition feature along with artificial intelligence. While no information is available about the upcoming phone, it is expected to have a full-screen display and a dual camera setup at the back.

While Samsung is not opting for the under display fingerprint reader as of now, China-based Vivo has already launched a phone with this technology. Dubbed as Vivo X20 Plus UD, the phone went on sale in China last month.

Recently, Vivo launched its latest smartphone — Vivo Apex, which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress. Unlike the under-display fingerprint sensor on the Vivo X20 Plus UD, the half part of the display of the Vivo APEX is integrated with the in-screen fingerprint reader.

The last major release by the company was the Vivo X20 UD edition, which is basically the under display fingerprint version of the current flagship. Then there’s the Vivo Apex as well, one of the most beautiful concepts we’ve seen this year, but even that’ll take time to hit the markets. This means that the company has a good few months in between wherein it can launch its next major flagship model. That’s likely going to be called as the Vivo X21, considering the recent 3C certification of a few models under the same name.

Now a new poster of the Vivo X21 has been spotted online revealing a key feature of the device. Apart from the dual cameras that can be spotted at the back of the phone, the advertisement clearly highlights the fingerprint icon on the screen. This means that the Vivo X21 is likely going to be equipped with an under display fingerprint sensor. Given that it’s going to be the direct successor to the Vivo X20, seeing the Synaptics ClearID sensor inside its screen won’t be a surprise. Further, at the time of its 3C certification, the Vivo X21A model was listed in four different variants, and one of them included a UD (under display fingerprint) variant. This also means that there could be regular versions of the Vivo X21, without the in screen fingerprint that could be cheaper.

That’s all we know about the X21 flagship so far. However, considering its high-end placement, expect nothing less than Snapdragon 670 and 6GB of RAM inside the device. More details should be revealed in the coming days, so stay tuned!

Samsung has reportedly stopped its Galaxy Note 9 project with under display fingerprint sensor. The report claims that a number of companies have been providing Samsung with the necessary sensors for under display fingerprint reader since the past two years. However, Samsung is still not able to find success in its commercialization mainly because of the technical difficulties it has encountered. Industry insiders have now revealed that the Note 9 will be coming with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Fingerprint recognition system that involves embedding of the biometric sensor under the capacitive button can accurately collect fingerprint information of the user. However, when it is placed under the display, it is unable to collect information accurately. Samsung is working with leading fingerprint sensor providers like LSI, Qualcomm, EJS Tech, Beyond Eyes and Synaptics since a long time, but it seems that the technology is still not accurate enough to get introduced on the Galaxy Note 9. It is likely that the Galaxy X or Galaxy Note X arriving next year would be featuring it.

The mass production of the Galaxy Note 9 is slated to begin in June. The production of the phablet has been reportedly delayed as the company took four months to incorporate the fingerprint scanner under its display. Like the upcoming Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, the Galaxy Note 9 is also expected to sport the same Infinity Display design.

At Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas, Vivo showcased the world’s first commercial phone to feature a fingerprint scanner under the display. However, the company refrained from revealing the phone’s name as well as its specifications and design.

It is said that the China-based company has already started mass production of the device and is expected to launch it soon. While we were expecting the device to get unveiled at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the phone might get announced sooner. If the latest reports are to be believed, then the phone, which is believed to be the Vivo X20 Plus UD, will go on sale from this month itself.

Alex Feng, Senior Vice President at Vivo had revealed that the phone will be officially announced in early 2018. He further added that the device provides a more comfortable authentication experience. The phone packs an in-display fingerprint technology by Synaptics which only works with OLED displays, and thus, the handset will feature an AMOLED display.

The fingerprint scanner will be placed between the glass panel and the OLED display panel. When the finger touches the glass panel, the OLED panel illuminates the fingerprint area and the chip inside processes the beams of light emitted.

The Vivo X20 Plus UD recently received 3C certification. Previous leaks have suggested that the phone will be similar to the Vivo X20 Plus in terms of design as well as specifications. It is said to feature a 6.43-inch full-screen display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The phone will be powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 660 processor, coupled with 4GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The device is also said to be fuelled by a 3,900mAh battery.

One major concern about this new fingerprint scanning technology is the speed of recognition. The prototype showcase had the response time of about 0.6s – 0.7 seconds, which is a bit slower than the regular fingerprint sensors. However, we expect the response time to improve by the time phone makes its debut.

In line with that, Vivo has officially announced that it will be showcasing a phone with a new fingerprint sensor technology at the event on 10th January.

Going by the teaser image released by the China-based smartphone manufacturer, it is clear that the company is planning to showcase a phone with under display fingerprint sensor technology.

With full-screen displays going mainstream, the demand for the fingerprint sensors embedded under display has intensified. For devices will full-screen display, the under display fingerprint sensor is believed to be the most convenient way to unlock devices, instead of a standalone sensor placed on the back side of the phone, or embedded on the home button.

Recently, Synaptics launched Clear ID FS9500 optical in-display fingerprint scanner for smartphones, marking a milestone in fingerprint sensor technology. The sensor can be used with wet, dry and cold fingerprints. It remains well-protected under the durable glass of the screen and is a water-resistant as well as scratch-resistant.

The Clear ID comes equipped with security features such as adaptive fingerprint template matching and verification as well as anti-spoofing technology. It is also integrated with ECC authentication and AES encryption. Synaptics has claimed that as many as 70 million units of these sensors will be available in the market in 2018.

Synaptics revealed that it is ready to mass produce optical in-display fingerprint sensors and announced that it is producing the same for a “top-five” smartphone vendor. While the company didn’t announce the name of the smartphone manufacturer it has tied-up with, some reports suggested that the company could be Vivo.

Vivo recently announced that it will be the first company to launch a smartphone with a fingerprint sensor embedded underneath the display in 2018. It revealed that the phone will come with Synaptic’s Clear ID but the name of the phone was not revealed.

Last week, Vivo X20 Plus UD received 3C certification. It is believed that UD in the phone’s name stands for Under Display, suggesting that the X20 Plus UD could be the first phone to come with under display fingerprint sensor. The phone is expected to pack similar specifications as the Vivo X20 Plus which comes with a 6.43-inch Infinity display with 18:9 aspect ratio, Snapdragon 660 processor, 4GB/6GB RAM and 3,905mAh battery.

The prototype was showcased at the Asian MWC 2017 running in an unknown Vivo smartphone. There are indications the version may have been certified in China.
The smartphone actually is listed as Vivo X20 Plus UD version and it is believed the UD stands for Under Display. Since the device has received quality certification, it may soon hit the market. But is this really the Under display version? We can’t be so sure of that as UD could also mean Underwater Defense, that is a waterproof body and could also mean UpDate. However, a version with under display looks more likely.

China’s 3C listing usually doesn’t show anything regarding the specification of the model, so we can’t say if this is merely an upgraded version of the X20 Plus. But we’ll find out soon, as the latest technology is expected to be showcased at MWC 2018 in a few weeks time. To refresh your memory, the new Under display fingerprint scanner uses Synaptic’s new Clear ID fingerprint technology. According to Forbes, pressing the button present on the right side of a pre-production Vivo phone wakes it and displays an illuminated fingerprint image at the bottom of the screen. Users can simply touch it to unlock the phone instantly. Synaptics has said that its Clear ID in-display fingerprint scanner is designed for bezel-less OLED infinity displays that are found in flagship smartphones such as Apple iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

It seems that the rumored Vivo Xplay7 could be the smartphone that will be arriving with the advanced biometric recognition feature. A Weibo user has shared leaked snapshots of a slideshow along with some press renders of the alleged Vivo Xplay7. Before reading ahead, we would like to let our readers know that the legitimacy of the leaked images are not confirmed.

The above images show that the Vivo Xplay7 would be coming in color choices like Black, Gold and Rose Gold (or Pink). The frontside of the phone features the new full screen design, but its back panel looks a bit like the Xplay6. These renders also reveal that it features a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB-C port and a pair of external speakers.

What’s fascinating about the smartphone is that features a true bezel-less design and one of the leaked snapshot suggests that the display will deliver an astounding screen-to-body ratio of 100 percent. However, the Xplay7 has two cutouts at the upper portion of the display. These cutouts may either house dual selfie cameras or a selfie camera and a sensor.

The leaked images also claim that the Vivo Xplay7 features optical fingerprint scanner under its display. Few months ago, well-known analyst Pan Jiutang had claimed Vivo will become the first smartphone company to launch a phone with under-display fingerprint scanner. The rear side of the Xplay7 features a dual camera system. Leaked information suggests that it may feature a pair of customized Sony IMX401 sensors that will carry support for 4x optical zoom.

It is expected to deliver monstrous performance as it is rumored to feature the next-generation Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with 8 GB of RAM. It is speculated to be available in storage choices like 128 GB and 256 GB. Even though several smartphone OEMs will be launching Snapdragon 845 driven smartphones in 2018, the Xplay7 could be the first SD845 driven phone to feature under-display fingerprint scanner. Since the smartphone is speculated to feature Snapdragon 835’s successor chipset, it may get introduced in the first quarter of 2018.

The technology was demonstrated using a Vivo prototype machine that looked like the Vivo XPlay 6 launched last year. Also, Qualcomm revealed that the technology would start shipping in the fourth quarter of the year and as it draws nearer, it has come to the open that Vivo may be the first OEM to utilise the technology. A new leaked photos have revealed the Vivo XPlay 7 showing it will come with the fingerprint technology.

The photos leaked on Weibo and a group seems to have been captured from a Powerpoint presentation. The Xplay 7 is said to go by the internal code name – Vivo X20. From the leaked photos, the Vivo XPlay 7 comes with a full-screen design with dual curved edges at the sides. The device has dual cameras at the front and also at the rear, potentially positioning it as one of the few devices with such arrangement.

On the specs angle, the Vivo XPlay 7 is expected to pack a Snapdragon 835 processor which would likely be backed by 6GB RAM just like the XPlay 6. We cannot rule out the possibility of an 8GB RAM variant, considering there has been precedence this year, ala Nubia Z17 and OnePlus 5. Other details are still sketchy as at this moment but from previous leaks, the under display fingerprint technology the XPlay 7 is coming with uses Qualcomm’s new ultrasonic technology which sends a pulse through the finger, some of which gets reflected while some get absorbed. These vibrations are then detected by a sensor which builds up a fingerprint. The sensor may likely work from any part of the display and isn’t restricted to a particular area.
