For years, flying taxis existed mainly as futuristic concepts shown in promotional videos and test demonstrations. In 2026, the industry is finally moving into the early stages of commercial operations. Both China and the United States are investing heavily in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, but their approaches differ. China is pushing for rapid deployment and commercialization, while the United States is focusing on certification, pilot programs, and building the regulatory framework needed for long-term growth.

China Moves Ahead in Real-World Operations

China currently appears to be leading the global flying taxi race. The country’s low-altitude economy has become a strategic national priority, with industry forecasts suggesting the sector could eventually be worth trillions of yuan.

One of the biggest milestones has been the commercial progress of the EH216-S autonomous passenger aircraft. The aircraft is already conducting commercial trial operations and sightseeing flights in several Chinese cities, giving China a significant head start in real-world passenger services.

China is also expanding manufacturing capacity. A new smart factory in Guangzhou is expected to produce up to 100 flying cars annually, combining automotive-style production efficiency with aviation-grade standards. At the same time, companies such as Fengfei Aviation are developing larger aircraft like the Sky Dragon, a 10-passenger flying taxi designed for regional transportation rather than short urban trips. With a potential hybrid range of up to 1,500 kilometers, it represents one of the most ambitious eVTOL projects currently under development.

The United States Focuses on Certification and Infrastructure

While China leads in deployment, the United States remains a major force in aircraft development and advanced air mobility technology. The U.S. government has launched pilot programs to help accelerate the testing and deployment of flying taxis, cargo aircraft, and emergency-response eVTOL services.

Companies such as Archer Aviation, Joby Aviation, and BETA Technologies are among the leading players. Archer plans to begin early-midnight aircraft operations in Florida, Texas, and New York during the second half of 2026. However, certification remains one of the biggest challenges facing the industry.

Many U.S. companies are expected to start with cargo transport, medical deliveries, and premium shuttle services before expanding into larger passenger networks. This approach is designed to build operational experience while regulators continue developing safety standards for widespread deployment.

CChina’s skydragon

What Can We Expect in 2026 and Beyond?

The rest of 2026 is likely to bring more demonstration flights, certification milestones, and limited commercial services rather than large-scale flying taxi networks. Tourism, emergency medical transportation, disaster response, and premium transportation services are expected to be the industry’s first successful markets.

Looking further ahead, the outlook remains promising. Improvements in battery technology, falling production costs, better infrastructure, and clearer regulations are expected to make flying taxis more practical and affordable over the next decade.

The long-term vision is simple: passengers could eventually book a flying taxi through a ride-hailing app just as easily as ordering a car today. While that future is still several years away, 2026 may be remembered as the year flying taxis began the transition from experimental aircraft to real commercial transportation.

A Glimpse into the Future of Urban Air Travel

The 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai is not just a showcase of global trade; it’s a window into the future of transportation. On the third day of the event, the spotlight fell on the “Future Low-Altitude Travel” zone within the Automotive and Smart Mobility exhibition area. This unique section introduced visitors to the possibilities of everyday air commuting through low-altitude mobility systems.

The “Future Terminal” Experience

The exhibit was designed like a futuristic low-altitude travel terminal, complete with zones for security checks, digital flight information boards, and even a cozy waiting lounge. A key attraction was a simulated ticket vending machine, which allowed visitors to explore potential routes and fares of short-distance air travel.

According to the simulation, a 10-minute intra-city flight from the National Exhibition Center to The Bund in Shanghai could cost around ¥49 / $7, while a 15-minute cross-city flight from Shanghai to Suzhou would be priced at about ¥119 / $17. These figures are based on realistic projections of future operating costs, making the idea of “flying to work” seem surprisingly affordable.

source: ithome.com

Electric Aircraft Lead the Way

A prototype electric aircraft on display captured significant attention. The model featured a 15-meter wingspan, a 10-meter fuselage, and room for five passengers. It can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h and cover distances of up to 250 km on a single charge, perfect for regional commutes. The design emphasizes zero-emission, sustainable travel powered by advanced battery technology.

Strategic Significance for China

Low-altitude travel has been identified as a key component of China’s next-generation transportation network. It forms a crucial part of the country’s “low-altitude economy,” which has been prioritized under China’s 15th Five-Year Plan. The focus reflects China’s ambition to integrate electric air mobility into daily life, connecting urban and suburban regions faster, cleaner, and more efficiently.

At CIIE 2025, this showcase wasn’t just an exhibit; it was a bold statement of how China envisions the skies becoming part of everyday travel in the years ahead.

It adds that the new system for transportation will be commercialized by 2028.

The automaker says that the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) ecosystem will start with a vision for landing stations for the air taxis (which are being called Vertiport) and building a long-term roadmap for the sector.

Talking about the advantages that Hyundai Motors has when it comes to UAM, Song Jae-Yong, Director of the company touted 37 manufacturing facilities across 10 countries as well as its subsidiary for components, infrastructure, and finance. He also talked about the firm’s development of technologies in electric and hydrogen fuels.

In order to boost the UAM efforts, the South Korean automating giant hired Dr. Shin Jai-won in 2019 who previously worked at NASA in the United States. The company is also planning to establish a subsidiary in Washington, DC for its UAM business.

The company was previously in talks with the officials of Los Angeles to commercialize UAM and is set to demonstrate a vertiport prototype in the UK later this year. As for South Korea, Hyundai says that the transportation service will start from Gimpo International Airport to about 30 to 70 kilometers in the city.

Hyundai is aiming to offer a safe, noiseless, cost-effective, and consumer-centric Urban Air Mobility service. It’s noteworthy that other automakers, including Toyota, are also investing in this new sector.

The Urban Air Port Air-One was selected as the winner of the UK government’s Future Flight Challenge earlier this year. The program aims to develop aviation infrastructure and systems that enable the next generation of electric and autonomous air vehicles.

Recently, Archer Aviation unveiled its first electric flying taxi named Maker. The two-seater model will be used for testing as the company works towards the certification of a larger piloted five-seater that was announced in March 2020. Note that this newly unveiled aircraft isn’t the one that will be used for the planned commercial operation in 2024.

In a collaboration with the Economic Development Board of Singapore (EDB) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Volocopter has plans to make air taxi services a reality in Singapore within three years. This puts Singapore in pole position to be the first country in Asia to launch UAM services.

In October 2019, Volocopter completed the historic air taxi demonstration flight across the Marina Bay area of the city, giving observers the unique opportunity of savoring the elegance and efficiency of UAM services. Before the launch of this service in Singapore, the company will obtain requisite regulatory clearance from CAAS and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. To this end, Volocopter will be conducting rigorous tests, flight trials, all statutory evaluations, and certifications before approval to commence commercial air taxi operations can be granted.

In order to shore up the commercial aspects of the air taxi services, the first route is expected to transcend over the southern waters, providing breath-taking views of the Marina Bay skyline and would most likely be a tourist delight. Follow-on connections could include cross-border flights, which will further strengthen regional connectivity and provide a better travel experience to the country’s economic centers.

Editor’s Pick: More than 20 million Gionee phones secretly implanted with Trojan Horses to make money

The Volocopter air taxis are carbon emission-free aircraft that take-off and land vertically. They are designed as an addition to urban mobility and are capable of carrying two passengers to their destinations in a seamless and quiet manner, thus offering an innovative dimension to the chaotic transportation systems that have characterized many cities.

The company Volocopter GmbH says (via) it is building what it termed the world’s first sustainable and scalable UAM business so as to bring affordable air taxi services to megacities worldwide. The company collaborates with its partners to build the necessary ecosystem that will berth urban air mobility in smart cities.

Founded in 2011, Volocopter currently has about 200 staff and so far raised about €122 million in equity. The Volocopter was first unveiled at CES 2018. It uses four inertial movement units (IMUs) that constantly measure and determine its attitude and positioning during flight. The battery system is split into nine discrete packs and each one is powering a pair of rotors ensuring that the vehicle keeps flying if one or two battery packs fail.

Then there are GPS and navigation systems which are dual-redundant. For the worst situation, there’s a ballistic parachute that will deploy and ensure that the air taxi returns to the ground with its passengers intact.
