Anbernic retro handhelds are leaving the US

The company just announced that it will be suspending shipments of its affordable consoles from China to the US over the recent tariff wars. To recall, Anbernic is best known for selling cheap retro handheld consoles that are typically focused on emulation.

In an official statement, the brand stated that “Due to changes in U.S. tariff policies, we will be suspending all orders shipping from China to the United States starting today. We strongly recommend prioritizing products shipped from our U.S. warehouse, which are currently not affected by import duties and can be purchased with confidence.”

In the past, Anbernic has offered options that allow users to choose which warehouse they wanted to ship their devices from, allowing them to avoid additional custom fees. But the new tariffs mean that new customers can no longer buy directly from China. Unless there is a big change, US gamers would likely missing out on any future Anbernic console launches as well.

As of right now, US President Donald Trump has announced a 90 day pause on most tariffs, while increasing the tariffs companies would need to pay for importing from China. So it makes sense that Anbernic decided to pull out of the region till the situation improves.

“We need to have semiconductors, chips, and flat panels made in America. We can’t be reliant on Southeast Asia for all the things that operate for us,” Lutnick stated. This follows President Donald Trump’s April 11 decision to exempt smartphones, laptops, and other electronics from reciprocal tariffs imposed on April 2, dubbed “Liberation Day.”

The US Customs and Border Protection notice, effective from April 5, covered products like hard drives and memory chips. Not to mention, it offers relief to importers like Apple and Samsung. In the latest revelation, Lutnick clarified that these items will now fall under a “special focus type of tariff” set to take effect soon, despite their exclusion from reciprocal duties. Apple shifted its inventory from India and China to the US to during the last week of March to dodge Trump’s tariff deadline.

The policy shift aims to address national security concerns, with Lutnick asserting that negotiations with other countries are off the table. “These are things that are national security that we need to be made in America,” he said. This comes amid warnings from experts that “Made in America” iPhones could skyrocket to $3,500, reflecting potential cost hikes as production relocates. Trump’s administration seeks to cushion consumers and support US firms while pushing for self-sufficiency, though the rapid policy reversal raises questions about supply chain stability.

U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred fresh debate on U.S.-Taiwan trade relations and semiconductor manufacturing policy. According to Reuters, Trump made assertive remarks at a Republican National Congressional Committee event, where he criticized government grants to foreign chipmakers and disclosed his firm approach during his presidency.

Trump warns TSMC over domestic investment

During the event, Trump revealed he had warned Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) of a potential tax of up to 100 percent if it did not establish its factories within the U.S.

Unlike the current administration, which has awarded TSMC’s U.S. unit a $6.6 billion grant for its Arizona-based manufacturing expansion, Trump said he offered no financial assistance but used taxation as a deterrent. TSMC had previously confirmed a $100 billion investment plan in the U.S., which includes five new facilities.

In response to the tariff threat, Taiwanese officials said they have already initiated discussions with Washington to resolve the matter diplomatically. Taiwan’s National Security Bureau Director-General confirmed ongoing “strategic communication” with U.S. officials, aiming to secure a negotiation process that avoids retaliation.

Taiwan has offered zero tariffs, more investment, and procurement in the U.S. to de-escalate the situation. Meanwhile, a report by Investing claimed that Taiwan’s stock market has been volatile amid the developments, prompting the government to activate a $15 billion stabilization fund to restore investor confidence. TSMC shares remained flat, but major suppliers like Foxconn experienced noticeable declines.
