The world of handheld gaming consoles is buzzing, with new devices capturing the hearts of gamers everywhere. Leading the pack is the Steam Deck, a surprise hit from Valve that has quickly become a favorite among enthusiasts. With its success, many are asking, “When will we see a Steam Deck 2?” While Valve has stated we shouldn’t expect a new console until at least 2025, recent hints suggest that an updated version of the original might be closer than we think. Here are the details…

New Steam Deck! Better Battery Life Means More Gaming on a Single Charge

“Appearances can be deceiving.” You’ve probably heard this phrase many times throughout your life. Indeed, when it comes to technology, looks can be even more misleading. For instance, a product that seems unchanged in its design might emerge with a completely revamped look. This is precisely what Valve intends to do with the Steam Deck.

Valve Corporation Model: 1030 seems to be a revised Steam Deck model with AT LEAST a new Wi-Fi card capable of the 6E (6Ghz) spectrum pic.twitter.com/OLjzTPVXlr
— Brad Lynch (@SadlyItsBradley) October 4, 2023

A Steam Deck refresh could be coming soon, according to recent rumors and FCC filings. The refreshed model is expected to have a new model number (1030) and feature a Wi-Fi 6E card for significantly improved download speeds. Other potential improvements include a better battery life, a brighter display, and a more efficient cooling system. Some of the potential improvements that could be included in a Steam Deck refresh:

Wi-Fi 6E for significantly improved download speeds

Better battery life

Brighter display

More efficient cooling system

However, it is important to note that these are just rumors and speculations at this point. Valve has not yet announced any plans for a Steam Deck refresh. If a Steam Deck refresh is released, it is likely to be a minor update with incremental improvements. Like we said, Valve has already said that it is not planning to release a full-fledged Steam Deck 2 until at least 2025.

Steam Deck OS 3.5 update chengelog

Display

Added Settings -> Adjust Display Colors, to tune the display’s Color Vibrancy and Color Temperature. The settings can be tuned with a preview of a test image (above), or with your running game.

Native: The native display color appearance (the color rendering for Steam Deck prior to this update).

sRGB: Emulate the sRGB primaries, in a smooth manner that does not introduce gradient clipping.

Boosted: Emulate a wider-gamut display appearance, resulting in increased apparent vibrance. May result in gradient clipping.

HDR can now be enabled in Display Settings if supported by the external display.

VRR can now be enabled in Display Settings if supported by the USB-C adapter.

Reworked Quick-Access scaling settings to separate scaling from filtering. Added Stretch and Zoom scaling as new options to handle different aspect ratios.

Fixed touchscreen orientation while external display is connected.

Compositing is now avoided in additional scenarios, reducing latency and stutter in situation with multiple overlays on screen.

Improved latency in certain situations where the application renders slower than the display’s refresh rate.

General

Fixed an issue where certain workloads would exhibit severe CPU performance issues unless SMT was manually disabled.

External storage devices are now auto-mounted when connected to Steam Deck. To format or manage storage devices use the new device management interface in Settings->Storage.

Updated graphics drivers, with many performance and functionality improvements. Improved performance for Starfield. Fixed viewmodel corruption in Amnesia: The Bunker and launch failures for Immortals of Aveum and Kaiju-A-GoGo.

Improved Bluetooth connection stability, especially with multiple controllers

Slightly improved sleep resume speed

Implemented switching between controller bindings and mouse/keyboard desktop bindings by long-pressing Options in the Linux hid-steam driver, to match Steam’s default Desktop configuration.

Improved fade transitions between applications.

The contents of the performance overlay can now be customized by creating a ~/.config/MangoHud/presets.conf configuration file.

Fixed a bug where some games could appear stretched if their window size didn’t match their swapchain size (eg. Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4)

Fixed Disgaea PC needing to be tapped on before input works

Fixed physical dimensions reported to games, fixing some issues with an incorrect aspect ratio sometimes being detected (eg. Returnal)

Worked around a problem where Allow Tearing could cause heavy stuttering if the Performance Overlay or other overlays appeared on screen. Tearing is now impossible in such situations, and the Performance Overlay should be disabled for best results.

Fixed a problem where keyboard input would not be detected in Overwatch 2

Controller firmware: fixed an issue where some thumbstick touch sensors would lose touch periodically

Firmware 116

Added voltage offset settings.

Improved robustness of the Firmware Settings Reset chord (Volume Down + Quick-Access + Power) against some boot hang scenarios.

Fixed a rare issue that would set the processor TDP limit too low causing CPU and GPU frequencies to be stuck at 400 MHz and 200 MHz respectively.

Fixed an issue when the charging light would turn back on when plugged in for a while after fully charged.

Updated Arch Linux base

This update pulls in newer performance, security and stability fixes for the underlying packages that are the foundation for SteamOS

Most notably, this includes recent changes to KDE Plasma, Steam Deck’s Desktop Mode. Full notes on these updates can be found on KDE’s website here. Here are a few of the highlights:

New window tiling system

Updated Discover (app store / software manager) with a new homepage and improved search

Discover can now perform system updates from the desktop

Updated desktop widgets

To access Steam Deck OS 3.5, users can opt-in by navigating to Settings on their Steam Deck, followed by System, and then System Update Channel. However, it’s essential to note that Valve hasn’t specified when this update will be available as a stable release, so it’s currently in a testing phase.

Earlier this year, Valve finally launched the much-awaited Steam Deck; however, customers had to wait through months-long reservation queues before the company started selling the handheld directly. To add to the frustration, the console was only available in a select few markets like Europe, the US, and Canada.

Now, the gaming giant is finally expanding the availability of the Steam Deck to four major Asian markets: Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and Hong Kong. The console will be available via Komodo, which is the official Steam Deck distributor in these regions.

The launch was first announced in August, when Valve set up pre-order landing pages on the respective regional websites. Users who pre-ordered will begin receiving emails today to finalize their purchases, and the shipment date will be December 17.

The console is priced fairly close to the European and American prices (€419/$399) in the Asian market. It remains to be seen if the brand intends to move into more Asian countries, such as Indonesia, India, etc.

For those unaware, the Valve Steam Deck is a portable gaming console that includes some enthralling games such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Elden Ring, The Witcher 3, Stardew Valley, and Shadow Warrior. You can essentially play any existing game from your Steam library on the console if it is verified as being supported by the Steam platform.

In terms of specifications, the Steam Deck has a 7-inch IPS display with an HD resolution and a refresh rate of 60Hz. It is driven by an AMD Zen 2 processor and an RDNA 2 GPU. It has 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB SSD storage, as well as a microSD card slot. Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, USB-C, USB 3.2, 3.5mm audio jack, and DisplayPort 1.4 are all supported. The gaming console provides access to the Steam library, as well as Xbox Game Pass and the Epic Games Store.

The consoles were exclusively sold via the pre-reservation method up until now, but now the Steam Deck is finally available for direct purchase.

The company revealed in a blog post that it has been dealing with supply chain issues and component shortages, but thanks to Valve’s efforts, the ever-increasing reservation rate has been surpassed. Of course, the manufacturer reserves the right to return to taking reservations if demand is too high, citing “production, processing, and shipping bandwidth as still finite.”

The Steam Deck has a starting price of €419; however, this configuration only has 64 GB of eMMC storage. The 256GB SSD variant is priced at €549, while the top-end model, which has the “fastest storage,” anti-glare etched glass, an exclusive carrying case, and a virtual keyboard theme, has a price tag of €679. The most affordable option will be available for orders later this year, while users who purchase the latter two varieties will start receiving their consoles within 1-2 weeks.

Valve has also launched the Steam Deck Docking Station, which features three USB 3.1 ports, one HDMI 2.0 port, a DisplayPort 1.4, and a Gigabit Ethernet jack. It can be used to connect the Steam Deck to two external displays and multiple other Valve devices, and it can also charge the console simultaneously.

As per the latest updates coming from the company, it expects to start shipping the Steam Deck by the end of February. This is the same timeframe that the company had promised when it first delayed the launch.

Apart from hardware, the company is also trying to make sure that the users have good experience playing games on the device from the get-go. To make sure this happens, Valve has apparently shipped out several Steam Deck units to developers last month to test their games and make sure they are compliant with the hardware and software environment.

Under the Deck Verified program, the company will give a verified checkmark to games in the storefront that satisfy its categories for Steam Deck compatibility, including full controller support, as well as support for the default resolutions of 1280 x 800 pixels or 1280 x 700 pixels with readable text.

Valve’s Steam Deck will come powered by AMD’s quad-core processor based on the Zen 2 architecture and a graphics processor based on AMD RDNA 2 architecture. It packs 16GB of LPDDR5 onboard RAM and offers up to 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD.
