But while the latest version saw mostly praises, its Edge browser saw many changes that made it even more anti-competitive than before, which has now led to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivaldi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Vivaldi</a>&#8216;s co-founder taking a jab at the Windows 11 Edge browser in his latest blog post.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-428739 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-1.png?x10805" alt="Vivaldi" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-1.png 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-1-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-1-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-1-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-1-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-1-747x420.png 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>For those unaware, the Microsoft Edge browser brought about new changes with the arrival of the new Windows 11 operating system. This included making it <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/08/19/microsoft-harder-to-switch-browser-windows-11/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">harder for users to switch the default browser</a> on their PCs from Edge to any other third party browser. While <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/09/14/mozilla-beat-default-browser-game-windows-11/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mozilla managed to beat this difficult browser switching game</a>, it seems that other browser based firms are also annoyed by these new changes.</p>
<p>As per a recent <a href="https://vivaldi.com/blog/microsoft-back-to-its-old-tricks-to-get-an-edge-on-the-competition/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Vivaldi</em> </a>blog (Via <a href="https://www.windowslatest.com/2021/12/13/windows-11-vivaldi-hits-out-at-microsoft-edges-anti-competitive-behaviour/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>WindowsLatest</em></a>), &#8220;Microsoft’s moves seem desperate. And familiar. It is clear they don’t want you to use other browsers.&#8221; Recently, we had even reported on the American tech giant adding <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/02/microsoft-adds-new-prompts-to-stop-users-from-switching-to-chrome/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">new prompts</a> that seeks to prevent users from switching the default browser. These prompts include calling <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-chrome/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Google Chrome</a> outdated and from 2008, while also stating that its Edge browser is built on the same technology as Chrome.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-428737 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-e1638455031558.png?x10805" alt="Vivaldi" width="432" height="244" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-e1638455031558.png 432w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Edge-Prompt-1-e1638455031558-300x169.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px" /></p>
<p>Thus, Jon von Tetzchner, the Co-Founder of Vivaldi, took jabs at Microsoft and called out its anti-competitive practices, saying that its &#8216;back to its old tricks to get an edge on the competition.&#8221; He further urged users to &#8220;Most of all, don’t let Microsoft win at this stacked game. Persist until you can use your browser of choice on Windows – and help your friends or colleagues to do the same.&#8221;</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-428993 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230348.png?x10805" alt="Vivaldi for Android smartphones" width="938" height="528" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230348.png 938w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230348-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230348-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230348-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230348-746x420.png 746w" sizes="(max-width: 938px) 100vw, 938px" /></p>
<p>The new feature comes with its 5.0 update and enables users to keep two separate rows of tabs open at once, placing one on top of the other row. The &#8220;two-level tab stacks&#8221; solution was launched earlier this year in the browser&#8217;s desktop version and now has come to Android devices. Yes, that includes Android tablets, which get a whole host of improvements and new features, but more on that later.</p>
<h4>Vivaldi 5.0 for Android smartphones</h4>
<p>To enable this new feature, you have to long-press the New Tab button and select &#8220;New Tab Stack.&#8221; That should allow you to start using the new stack/group you created, with the current tab and one new additional tab.</p>
<p>In addition to the two-level tab stack feature, the 5.0 update also brings an improved tab interface and new ways to tweak the tab bar. The built-in Notes tool has been enhanced too so that users can quickly handle big chunks of text from a webpage to an existing note with an &#8220;Append to Note&#8221; option when highlighting text. Lastly, the update also brings dark mode for websites. When you toggle this feature, the browser automatically changes the site background color to black, making it easier on the eyes. This setting is saved on a per-site basis.</p>
<h4>Vivaldi for Android tablets</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-428995 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230553.png?x10805" alt="Vivaldi for Android tablets" width="936" height="526" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230553.png 936w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230553-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230553-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230553-696x391.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Screenshot-2021-12-03-230553-747x420.png 747w" sizes="(max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px" /></p>
<p>Vivaldi 5.0 also improves support for Android tablets. The tablet platform also gets the &#8220;two-level tab stacks&#8221; feature with an additional way of creating a new stack by simply dragging tabs onto one another to create a new tab stack.</p>
<p>Like the desktop browser, tablet users can now enable panels that appear on the left and provide quick access to functions such as bookmarks, history, notes, etc.</p>
<p>For those unaware, Vivaldi is a freeware, cross-platform web browser developed by Vivaldi Technologies, a Norway-based company founded by Tatsuki Tomita and Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, who was the co-founder and CEO of Opera Software.</p>
<p>Although intended for general users, it is first and foremost targeted towards technically-inclined users as well as former Opera users disgruntled by its transition from the Presto layout engine to a Chromium-based browser that resulted in the loss of many of its iconic features.</p>
