As a matter of fact, 2020 is predicted to be the year of 5G smartphones with almost all OEMs expected to release at least a 5G phone. A recent chart attributed to being from Counterpoint Research has predicted how the various OEMs are expected to rank in terms of 5G phone shipments.

The chart projects that Huawei and its Honor brand with combine to give Huawei the lead in the 5G smartphone sales. Huawei is expected to be followed by Apple which is expected to release its first 5G phone next year. Samsung is expected to come in at the third place with more 5G phones expected from the Korean tech giant this year. Samsung is also expected to release 5G mid-range models aside from its flagship lineup.

EDITOR’S PICK: First Samples from the 108MP Mi Mix Alpha is here & we are not impressed!

BBK subsidiaries OPPO and Vivo complete the top 5 rankings while Xiaomi is expected to come in at number 6 position. LG, OnePlus, Google and Motorola are expected to grab a substantial share of the 5G market to complete the top 10 rankings.

Counterpoint projects that the global 5G smartphone shipments in 2020 will exceed 270 million units. The research firm also says the penetration rate of 5G mobile phones will increase from about 1% in 2019 to more than 15% in 2020.

The company is now going to exhibit 5G related technologies at the MWC Shanghai 2019. Vivo formally confirmed via Weibo to present the new 5G technologies or products at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2019. However, the company didn’t reveal any details of the upcoming technologies.

According to developments in the past, Vivo is expected to unveil new 5G technologies which would facilitate the 5G deployment. The company has always remained ahead in the road to the development of 5G technology. In December, Vivo showcased the first Vivo NEX 5G prototype at the China Mobile’s exhibition.
Vivo always stood ahead in bringing high-end technologies to their smartphones. They introduced ToF technology to map the objects on the 3D surface accurately. Fast charging and liquid cooling are also significant advancements by the company to step into the 5G world. The Mobile World Congress Shanghai edition is taking place between June 26-28th in China.

It is expected that by the year 2020 most of the developed markets would upgrade to the 5G networks. In a bid to make 5G enabled smartphones, Vivo has completed successful trial of the 5G technology using a modified version of its latest flagship device, Nex S.

Last week, Oppo did a successful test of 5G protocol on an Oppo R15, and today, another BBK Electronics company has attained the 5G readiness. In a press note, Vivo explained that they did the test on the Nex S by doing some necessary changes and adding the latest Qualcomm X50 modem. During the test, the device included a non-standalone architecture model with both LTE and NR (New Radio) antennas. The test was based on 3GPP Release 12 standards, which is the first phase of the 5G protocol.

Vivo will now start testing and developing the actual 5G phone by examining IODT and using actual 5G network and infrastructure. Vivo is giving a timeline of the year 2020 for the launch of 5G enabled smartphone.

Many giants are signing pacts and agreements with the different companies to attain the 5G technology in their devices. Recently, Xiaomi has partnered with NTT Docomo to rollout the 5G related devices and equipments in Japan. Further, Samsung has developed 7nm foundry process which will be used in Snapdragon 855, a fully supported 5G SoC. Samsung will launch the Galaxy S10 as 5G ready device and later Lenovo, Huawei and many other OEMs will join the race next year.
