Fresh information shared by Lets Go Digital reveals that the Chinese firm has trademarked VivoX moniker with European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Could it be the name of the commercial version of the APEX 2019 phone?

The trademark filing of VivoX moniker was done by Rolim, Mietzel, Wohlnick & Calheiros from Düsseldorf, Germany. In the past, the same firm was responsible for trademarking the Vivo NEX name. The Vivo NEX smartphone was made official two months after the name was trademarked with EUIPO by the said firm.

The trademark filing reveals that apart from the name, the company has also registered a logo. The logo suggests that the VivoX name could be the name of the next high-end phone from the company. The EUIPO classifies the moniker as Class 9 that includes smartphones, covers for ‘smartphones, battery chargers, wireless earbuds.’

Vivo is known for using innovative technologies on its smartphones. In 2018, Vivo had launched the Vivo X20 Plus UD to become the first company to launch a smartphone with in-display fingerpint scanner. It had impressed the smartphone industry last year by launching one of the first notch-less and bezel-less Vivo NEX phone. By the end of 2018, it may release the Vivo NEX Dual Display with flagship specs and dual displays. At the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 tech event, it has demoed the 120W Super FlashCharge technology. It will be unleashing its first 5G phone in Q3 this year. Hence, the VivoX device may arrive with some innovative features.

At the beginning of 2018, the Chinese firm had revealed the concept model of Vivo APEX bezel-less phone, and it had announced its commercial edition as the Snapdragon 845 powered Vivo NEX phone with pop-up selfie camera by mid-2018. Hence, Vivo is expected to release a commercial version of the APEX 2019 concept phone this year. It remains to be seen whether it will be called VivoX.

Recent reports have claimed that Vivo is working on a foldable phone. The company may use the VivoX for its first foldable phone or a completely different device. Hence, it is advisable to wait for further reports to know more on it.

The latter is just a concept phone for now, but it is believed to hit the shelves later this year with some changes and a different name. Both the phones come with the cleanest design ever seen on a mobile device and the absence of ports, keys and so on is always replaced by more innovative technologies. Here is a comparison between the first holeless devices in the smartphone market.

Design

I liked more the design of the Vivo Apex 2019 because it looks cleaner and more minimalist. Indeed, it has narrower bezels around the display, even though, on the other hand, it does not seem to have a front camera (Vivo did not confirm whether or not there is a pop-up camera). Further, the cameras on the back of the Vivo Apex 2019 are not included on a single protruding module like the Meizu Zero but they are separated, and the LED flash is barely visible unlike the one of the Meizu Zero. But if we talk about build quality, then maybe Meizu Zero is way better. Vivo did not mention whether or not the Apex 2019 is waterproof, but we know that Meizu Zero has an IP68 certification as well as a ceramic back. In both cases, the physical keys are replaced by touch control at the sides.

Display

We still have not enough info to establish which device has the best display. Both are AMOLED panels and both integrate an in-display fingerprint reader as well as a piezoelectric transductor which makes it double as a speaker. The differences we can notice are narrower bezels and the full-display fingerprint scanner on the Vivo Apex 2019, while Meizu Zero has thicker bezels on the upper and lower parts and a traditional in-display fingerprint reader that only works on a specific zone.

Hardware/Software

Vivo Apex 2019 features a way more advanced hardware, so it surely delivers a faster user experience and it is more suitable for productivity and heavy usage patterns. It comes with the most powerful chipset in the Android world: the octa-core Snapdragon 855 by Qualcomm, paired with 12 GB of RAM. Meizu Zero still has a Snapdragon 845 from 2018, so there is no way it can compete with its rival. But it will probably come with a more affordable price.

Camera

After announcing these handsets, the companies did not release all the details about their specs sheets, so we do not know everything. Among the things we do not know there are several camera specs. We just know the resolutions of Vivo Apex 2019’s rear cameras, while we do not even know whether or not it will feature a front camera. So we can not express a judgment on this.

Battery

Vivo and Meizu did not reveal the battery capacities of these phones, so we have no idea about how much they can last on a single charge. Given that they do not feature any port, they use alternative methods to charge the battery. Meizu Zero has Qi wireless charging that is more practical but slower, while Vivo Apex 2019 has the MagPort, a magnetic connector placed on the rear side for charging and data transfer.

Conclusion

At a first glance, I would choose the Vivo Apex 2019 because of its more futuristic design and its better hardware department. But it would be just a temporary decision because we still do not know the complete specs sheets of these phones, neither their price once they will be in the shelves (Apex 2019 is just a concept phone, so it will not even be released under this name and with those exact specifications). Do you like holeless phones or you think they are too limiting for the final user? Which one would you pick between Meizu Zero and Vivo Apex 2019?

We bring you some hands-on pictures of the APEX 2019, thanks to Chinese website Anzhou.

The Vivo APEX 2019 continues to explore new technology, heading into the next generation while featuring a minimalist design. It doesn’t feature a charging port instead, it has some metal grooves at the back which can be used to charge the phone wirelessly.

The design utilises a fully CNC-integrated glass body with a range of cutouts which provides a super integrated visual experience. The edges are well chamfered in order to provide a comfortable grip.

Despite the sleek build, Vivo also worked on providing the APEX 2019 with waterproof and dustproof properties. The device lacks physical buttons but instead, it features touch-sensitive ones. There is also a “high-definition” linear motor to provide haptic feedback when using the buttons. It also comes with a screen fingerprint technology that works on any part of the screen. Read Also: Vivo Y89 with Snapdragon 626, dual cameras and 1,598 Yuan (~$235) announced

On the specification, the Vivo APEX 2019 packs the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset which pairs with 12GB of RAM. The device will also be available in 512GB storage option. Since this is a concept phone, we may never see it launched officially. However, since the NEX was basically the Vivo APEX with a different name, the same pathway may be followed with the APEX 2019. Before then, do feast your eyes on more of the hands-on pictures from below.

Just a few hours to the launch, an official render has surfaced online that shows the device in full.

The Vivo APEX 2019 has a mirror-like silver finish. The back is highly reflective and is home to dual cameras stacked on top of each other. What appears to be an LED flash sits underneath.

The front of the phone is nearly all screen but there is still some bezels around with the chin being the thickest. Since the top bezel is gone, there is no front-facing camera or earpiece which means Vivo is sticking to a pop-up camera and a piezoelectric speaker.

There is also no rear-mounted fingerprint scanner which means it has an in-screen one. The image isn’t a close-up shot, so we can’t confirm if it truly doesn’t have any openings and buttons just like the Meizu Zero.

In a few hours, we will get to see the device properly and also learn more about its design and specs.

The company has already scheduled a launch event on 24th January in China where it’ll unveil the Apex 2019.

While there’s a lot of buzz related to the phone’s design, no live leaks of the device have surfaced so far. However, Ben Geskin has shared the phone’s concept render through Twitter, which reveals the phone’s design.

The concept render of the smartphone shows its bezel-less display. While the bezels are minimal on the sides and top, it still has a slightly thicker chin at the bottom. Nonetheless, it could be the phone with the highest screen-to-body ratio.

On the back side, the device features a dual-camera setup in the top-center position. The camera sensors are stacked vertically along with an LED flash. At the bottom, there’s a Vivo branding. As per the reports, the phone won’t come with any ports or buttons.

The no-buttons and no-ports design suggest that the phone will support wireless charging as well as wireless data transfer and the users will have to rely on the gesture-based and pressure-sensitive navigation system. The phone will come with an advanced in-display fingerprint sensor with a larger area and improved sensor for security.

Last year’s Apex smartphone had a unique pop-up front-facing camera, making the phone stand apart from the rest. However, it’s not yet known what Vivo has adopted for the Apex 2019 smartphone for the front-facing camera.

As for the memory configuration, the phone could come with 8GB RAM but there’s a possibility that the company could also announce 10GB RAM or 12GB RAM variant as well. We are expecting the device to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor manufactured using 7nm process.

As said, the Vivo Apex 2019 is scheduled to get launched in China on 24th January. While the company has not yet confirmed this, we are expecting the Chinese company to showcase the Vivo Apex 2019 smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, Spain which will kick-off on 25th February.

Ahead of the launch, the renders of the APEX 2019 has appeared online. Before now, Vivo is yet to officially disclose any detail of the APEX 2019. However, the device has only been promoted using the codename “The Water drop”. Vivo recently shared a video on its official Weibo page which shows the Vivo APEX 2019 being felt by passersby. In the video, many of the responses described the gadget as pebble, soap and so on. That gives us an idea that the device will be a sleek one with a glass body.

The renders show the Vivo APEX 2019 will continue with a bezel-less design and apparently a super high screen to body ratio. The device will utilise the in-display fingerprint sensor and would still not have a selfie camera at the front. What we don’t know is if Vivo will retain the pop-up camera design or would shift to the slider design which seems to be gaining ground. The rear design is still unclear as the renders only show the front design. It is reported, though, that the APEX 2019 body does not have any openings, and even the charging opening does not exist. The device is reported to adopt the wireless fast charging method. Another fascinating thing about the display is the curved edge screen and well-chamfered edges which the device features. We can’t say if the renders are accurate but there’s no doubt the Vivo APEX 2019 is sure going to be a device to look forward to. The company later launched its Vivo NEX and most recently Vivo NEX Dual experimental smartphones.

Now, the Chinese company is all set to launch yet another experimental smartphone — Vivo Apex 2019. The company teased the launch of a new smartphone on 24th January in China and now the poster shared by the company confirms that the device launching on January 24th is indeed the Vivo Apex 2019.

The caption on the image roughly translates to: “A year ago, Vivo APEX portrayed a new world of full screens. A year later, #vivo APEX 2019# evolved again, using technology to wake up to the future. See you on January 24.”

According to the reports, the smartphone is codenamed “The Waterdrop” and is revealed to come with a curved design without any kind of notches, bezels or physical buttons. The phone could come with pressure-sensitive and gesture-based navigation. As for the memory configuration, the phone could come with 8GB RAM but there’s a possibility that the company could also announce 10GB RAM or 12GB RAM variant as well.

Further, the smartphone is also expected to come with sixth-generation in-display fingerprint sensor with a larger area and improved sensor, similar to what Xiaomi and Oppo unveiled earlier this week. We are expecting the device to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor manufactured using 7nm process.

While the company has not yet confirmed this, we are expecting the Chinese company to showcase the Vivo Apex 2019 smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, Spain which will kick-off on 25th February.

For Vivo Apex showcased last year, the company had adopted pop-up front-facing camera design for bezel-less display. To see what the company has adopted this time to offer higher screen-to-body ratio, we’ll have to wait until 24th January when Vivo officially announces the smartphone.
