Vivo X Fold launched with Zeiss cameras, dual-fingerprint sensors & a durable hinge

Vivo just held a launch conference in which it launched three new highly anticipated devices. One of the models includes the Vivo X Fold, which is the company’s first foldable smartphone that has apparently been in development for four years now. So let’s have a look.

Design & Display

The newly launched Vivo X Fold adopts an inward folding design. In other words, the device’s primary display is hidden when the smartphone is in its folded state. Although, users then have access to the smaller external display in this mode. The rear panel features a large rectangular island module that houses a circular camera sensor setup and other necessary sensors like the LED flash. The front of the device features a punch hole cutout along with curved edges. Interestingly, the device also features two ultrasonic fingerprint scanners as well as an alert slider on the side.

The brand has placed an emphasis on the hinge of its first foldable handset, which comes with an aerospace grade wing design. In the Rheinland folding test, the device was folded 300,000 times overall to check its durability. Furthermore, even if the user folds the device 80 times a day, the folding mechanism will still remain functional over the course of 10 years. Since it is the first model of its kind from the brand, it is not surprising that Vivo made no compromises on its build quality.

Talking about the display, the Vivo X Fold sports a large 8.03 inch E5 LTPO OLED 3.0 display with UTG that has a 120Hz refresh rate, 2K resolution, and a 4:3.5 aspect ratio. The screen also supports HDR10+ and comes with a 113 percent DCI P3 color gamut. On the other hand, the secondary screen is a 6.53 inch E5 OLED panel that has a Full HD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support, 100 percent DCI P3 color gamut, and 21:9 aspect ratio as well. Notably, both the external and internal display features a punch hole cutout. Notably, the smartphone’s display also received A+ rating from DisplayMate.

Specifications

Under the hood, the first foldable smartphone from the Chinese smartphone maker runs on a custom made Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SPU and the Adreno 730 for graphics. To put things simply, the custom SPU is basically to enhance the security and privacy of the smartphone on a chip level. Additionally, this flagship grade SoC is paired with UFS 3.1 internal storage and LPDDR5 RAM.

Storage configurations include 12GB of RAM that will be paired with either 256GB or 512GB of internal storage. The Vivo X Fold will run on the Android 12 operating system with the company’s custom UI on top. The handset is powered by a large 4,600mAh battery pack that supports up to 66W fast charging and 50W wireless charging. The 66W fast charging can top up the device to full in just 37 minutes.

Camera

For photography, the device features a quad camera setup on the rear that includes Zeiss lens and T* coating. The primary camera is a Samsung GN5 50 megapixel sensor that has an f/1.75 aperture and OIS support, which is coupled with a 48 megapixel ultra wide angle lens that has an f/2.2 aperture, a 12 megapixel portrait lens (47mm focal length), and finally, a 5 megapixel periscopic telephoto lens that offers up to 5x optical zoom and up to 60x digital zoom. On the front, the punch hole selfie camera on the outer and inner display is a 16 megapixel sensor.

Pricing, Availability, & Colors

The Vivo X Fold will be available in three different color options. This includes Blue, Black, and Gray color variants. The device is available in multiple configurations, so here are the prices:

12GB + 256GB – 8,999 Yuan (roughly 1,413 US Dollars)
12GB + 512GB – 9,999 Yuan (roughly 1,570 US Dollars)

The device will go on sale starting on 22nd April 2022 in China on major e-commerce websites, with pre-orders starting from today.

Vivo Nex Fold appears on 3C certification database with 80W fast charging

Earlier today, a well-known tipster revealed the design schematics of the Vivo X Fold which is an upcoming foldable device from the brand. And now, another device from the brand dubbed the Vivo Nex Fold has been spotted on China’s 3C certification database.

According to a MySmartPrice report, a Vivo device with model number V2178A has been listed on the 3C certification database. This model number corresponds to the Vivo NEX Fold device, which is expected to launch in China in the coming days. The listing reveals that the foldable smartphone will support 80W fast charging. This is in line with an earlier leak by a Weibo tipster who stated that the Vivo NEX Fold will come with a 4600mAh battery with 80W fast charging support and 50W wireless charging support.

So far, the Vivo Nex Fold is rumored to come with a 5x periscope zoom lens camera. But Vivo is also said to be working on another foldable device dubbed the Vivo X Fold which is rumored to come with a curved edge 6.5-inch display that offers a Full HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

The Vivo X Fold is said to sport an inward folding design like the foldable devices from Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and OPPO. The inner screen of the X Fold will measure 8 inches, and it will carry support for a Quad HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. As far as the inner display design is concerned, it will be equipped with a punch-hole on its right half. The device will house a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC and will be powered by a 4,600mAh battery with 80W fast charging and 50W wireless charging.

For photography, the Vivo X Fold is said to come with a quad-cam setup featuring a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, a 12-megapixel camera with 2x zoom, and an 8-megapixel camera with 5x zoom.

Additionally, the front and inner display are said to come equipped with an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner.

Vivo to launch its first foldable phone in April, codenamed “Butterfly”

Earlier today (7th March 2022), a new report surfaced online, which claimed that Vivo will be launching its first foldable smartphone next month. It also revealed the upcoming bendable device’s “butterfly” internal codename.

According to a Jiemian report, sources have revealed the foldable phone’s codename and April 2022 launch timeline. If this information is true, then Vivo would be the latest Chinese smartphone maker to launch a foldable handset, following the likes of the Honor Magic V and the OPPO Find N. These models were one of the newest foldable devices that were released in the Chinese market. So now, Vivo will be competing with the two brands as well as other companies that sell foldable models. Interestingly, we had recently reported on a Vivo X Fold, so this device might be the same model.

The sources close to the matter added that the upcoming foldable smartphone from the brand will feature a technological breakthrough with its hinge mechanism. But apart from this, it will also have innovations in core components and the device will rival Huawei and Samsung foldable models as well in terms of performance. As per an IDC report, the foldable phone shipments in China alone is expected to reach 1.5 million units in 2021.

Analytics based firms have estimated that this year, the overall shipments will double year on year. So, it arrives as no surprise that Vivo is also entering the market as well.

Few specs of vivo’s very first foldable smartphone tipped

It was last year that the very first foldable smartphones from both vivo and OPPO were tipped to be in the works. Later that year, the Find N from OPPO popped up and generated much hype thanks to its virtually crease-less display, among other things. And now, a new leak has revealed that vivo will soon be joining OPPO at the foldables club too with a device that may be called the vivo NEX Fold.

The information comes from tipster Panda is Bald who has also revealed a few specifications of the device. Its battery has been tipped to be sized 4,600mAh and will support up to 80W fast charging. While this isn’t the fastest around, the tipster has called it “luxurious” likely because of the fact that the speed is reserved for flagship BBK phones like the OnePlus 10 Pro and the upcoming OPPO Find X5.

Another bit revealed about the vivo NEX Fold is that it will come with a 5x periscope zoom lens. Again, periscope lenses are typically reserved for flagship-level devices so it’s kind of obvious that specs in other departments will be flagship-level too.

Apart from this, vivo is also set to launch its next flagship smartphone series. Dubbed vivo X80, the series may be comprised of four X80 models such as the vivo X80 SE, X80, X80 Pro, and X80 Pro+. From these, the alleged X80/X80 Pro recently surfaced on AnTuTu with the all-new Dimensity 9000 chipset, achieving some really impressive scores.

Foldable smartphones from OPPO, Vivo, Huawei, and others to launch soon

Samsung and Huawei were among the first smartphone manufacturers to commercially launch foldable smartphones and currently, the South Korean giant is leading the category with several devices in the market.

Many other device manufacturers have been working on their own foldable smartphones for quite some time and it seems that the companies are now gearing up to officially launch their products in the market.

While Xiaomi has already launched its Mi MIX Fold earlier this year, it’s now time for OPPO and Vivo to launch their foldable smartphones. Both the brands have unveiled interesting concept phones in the recent past but are yet to officially launch their foldable phones.

Vivo Foldable Smartphone Design Patent With Stylus

Now, a new report coming from Digital Chat Station claims that the OPPO foldable smartphone will come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset while the Vivo device will be powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 898 chipset.

Recently, it was reported that the OPPO’s foldable phone will have an inner fold design with an OLED display measuring 7.8-inch to 8-inch, offering a screen resolution of 2K+ pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. It is also said to have a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera on the rear and a 32MP front-facing camera. We expect the phone to be running the Android 11 operating system out-of-the-box with ColorOS 12 on top.

Huawei is also expected to launch a new foldable smartphone in the market, which will come powered by the company’s own Kirin 9000 4G chipset and will reportedly have a clamshell design similar to the Galaxy Z Flip3. It seems that the Chinese giant won’t be launching a 5G compatible model, at least initially.

Motorola has also launched two foldable smartphones in the market, taking a different approach in terms of design compared to the other models available in the market. It was the first foldable smartphone to adopt a clamshell design. However, there’s no information about the third foldable device from the brand.

Apart from these Chinese brands, Google is also working on a foldable smartphone which is currently being referred to as Pixel Fold. Recently, it was reported that the company is developing a second foldable Pixel phone codename Jumbojack. Apple is also expected to launch a foldable iPhone in a couple of years.

Vivo patents a foldable smartphone, with a full screen front body

Vivo had one of its patents recently be published by the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration). The patent is for a foldable smartphone that has a full front screen body.

As per a patent filing with the CNIPA, the Chinese tech giant is apparently working on a “folding electronic equipment” that has the publication number CN112711301A. The patent in question describes a foldable electronic device that includes a housing and a display a screen mounted on this housing. One side of the housing is a non display area, with this region housing the internal components.

Furthermore, the foldable smartphone from the brand is also designed to offer a full front screen body experience, which means that there will be no visible seems, notches or chin at the front. This is further supplemented by the folding mechanism itself, allowing for a better reading, gaming, and overall viewing experience, which is hinted by its supposed inward folding design. Unfortunately, it is unknown if the device would also sport a under display selfie shooter as well.

Keep in mind that this is still just a patent so we have no way of knowing if the company is actually working on such a product or covering all bases. vivo patents a foldable smartphone design with an elongated display

Foldables are said to the future of smartphones. But apart from Samsung and Lenovo-owned Motorola, no other handset makers have released such devices yet. But they are reported to do so this year. Hence, we have been seeing multiple patents regarding foldable smartphones in the past few months like this new vivo one.

According to LetsGoDigital, Vivo Mobile Communications filed a design patent with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) at the end of August 2020. This patent got approved and published on February 12, 2021.

Going by the sketches, this vivo foldable smartphone design is unlike any other. Normally, foldable smartphones either fold out to become a tablet or they feature old-school clamshell. But this design patent by vivo is neither.

This foldable phone design by vivo sports a rather unusual long display panel that folds at the bottom. Hence, it looks like a normal handset in the folded state. However, in the unfolded mode, the screen is elongated and it looks weird.

Further, the back of the device houses a penta-camera setup, which also includes a periscope zoom unit and a unique LED flash module. Interestingly, the design only has a single physical key at the top (could be the power button) and there are no ports as well. Hence, this phone may charge wirelessly.

With that being said, the only benefit we can realize from this vivo foldable smartphone design patent is that it is slimmer than commercially available foldables in the market. Additionally, its screen can be useful for vloggers as a viewfinder for the five cameras.

Anyway, we don’t expect vivo to launch any handset with this design anytime soon.
