This could make Vivo smartphones attractive to the segment of the market that wants the ability to tinker with their smartphones.

Vivo, together with OnePlus, Realme, and Oppo are under the BBK Electronics group. OnePlus devices retain their warranty even after undergoing some modifications. This is achieved through the unlocking of the phone’s bootloader and access to the kernel sources of the device. Previously, this kind of modification has been quite difficult on Vivo devices. It is however coming to light that the process may be a bit straightforward with Qualcomm processors.

Vivo does not offer official bootloader unlocking services or kernel sources. There are however some tech-savvy groups that may be trying to tinker with Vivo devices. It is reported that a couple of members of the XDA community have achieved success in this direction. The duo of Pervokur and Killuminati91 may have cracked Vivo’s custom Fastboot interface. They have managed to get a method to unlock the bootloader of some Vivo smartphones.

The bootloader unlocked devices are the Vivo V21e, X70 Pro Plus, and Y31. All the unlocked smartphones are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. It is noted that there are flipsides to the unlocking of the bootloader of the Vivo devices.

The process disabled the fingerprint sensor on the Vivo X70 Pro Plus, Users will have to flash a custom vendor image using a modified Fastboot binary, as well as rely on a race condition to achieve the unlock. After tinkering with the device, users can run otherwise incompatible software on their devices. The unlock could also possibly lead to an invalidation of the existing warranty.

The renders reveal that the Y21e will come with a waterdrop notch for the front camera. The device can also be observed to have a thick chin and narrow bezels. The volume rocker and the power button embedded with a fingerprint sensor can be found on the right spine of the device. Coming to its rear, the Y21e has a clean camera island with a dual-camera setup and LED flash.

The Vivo branding is present on the bottom left side of the rear panel. Although not revealed in the renders, we can expect the USB Type-C port, speaker grille, and primary microphone could be on the bottom in addition to the 3.5mm audio jack. The renders suggest that the device will come in two colors, namely White and Blue.

Vivo Y21e specifications

The Y21e is tipped to feature a 6.51-inch HD+ LCD display with a waterdrop notch and a thick chin. The device is said to measure 164.2×76×8mm and weigh 182 grams. A 5000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support is expected to power the Y21e, and it is said to run the Android 12 based FuntouchOS out of the box.

For photography, the device comes with dual cameras on the back, with a 13MP primary sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and a 2MP secondary lens with an f/2.4 aperture. A third AI lens is also present on the camera island. On the front, it is expected to come with an 8MP snapper with an f/1.8 aperture for selfies and video chats.

Earlier Geekbench leaks have revealed that the device will come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC with 3GB RAM and 64GB storage, but it is speculated to be available in other options on launch.

For now, Vivo has not revealed any information on the device that might hint at a possible release date. So, stay tuned as we will be reporting any notable developments.

Design

At first glance, it looks like Vivo V21, V21 5G, and V21e have the same design, but it is not exactly the truth. The Vivo V21e is slightly less impressive because it comes with thicker bezels around the display, less elegant color variants, and a slightly different camera module. With the Vivo V21 and the V21 5G, you get a more compact design thanks to narrower bezels around the display. Vivo V21 and V21 5G have the same design, but the latter comes in an additional Arctic White color variant besides the Dusk Blue and the Sunset Dazzle color versions.

Display

Besides having the same design, Vivo V21 and V21 5G also share the same display panel. It is a great AMOLED panel with a diagonal of 6.44 inches, a 90 Hz refresh rate, a Full HD resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, and the HDR10+ certification. They also feature an above-average 500 nit typical brightness. These are good features for a display, especially in the midrange segment. The Vivo V21e is inferior because it lacks a high refresh rate and it comes with the HDR10 certification instead of HDR10+. All the phones sport an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Hardware/Software

The Vivo V21 and the V21 5G feature the same chipset: we are talking about the Dimensity 800U by MediaTek. Despite that, only the V21 5G supports 5G connectivity. Further, the Vivo V21 5G has a better memory configuration including 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage. The Vivo V21e has inferior hardware and no 5G, but it still comes with a good chipset, suitable even for gaming: the Snapdragon 720G by Qualcomm. The phones run Android 11 out of the box, customized by Funtouch OS.

Camera

The killer feature of the Vivo V21 series is their astonishing 44 MP front camera: the world’s first selfie camera with OIS supported by dual-LED flash. The 44 MP front snapper is able to record 4K videos with OIS and shoot HDR photos as well. On the rear side, Vivo V21 and V21 5G feature a triple camera with a 64 MP main sensor, an 8 MP ultrawide camera, a 2 MP macro camera, and OIS. The Vivo V21e has a 64 MP triple camera as well, but it lacks OIS.

Battery

Vivo V21, V21 5G, and V21e all come with a 4000 mAh battery supporting 33W fast charging. So you get a similar battery life, but consider that the Dimensity 800U found on V21 and V21 5G is built with a better 7 nm production process.

Vivo V21 vs Vivo V21 5G vs Vivo V21e: Price

Vivo V21 starts from €320/$390 in China, Vivo V21 5G is priced €340/$414 in its base variant, and Vivo V21e starts from €240/$292. Despite it is the most expensive one, the Vivo V21 5G offers a very high value for money: the price difference between the V21 5G and the V21 is minimum, but the former has 5G.

In a tweet, Vivo Malaysia has revealed that the Vivo V21 series will debut in the country on April 27. Similarly, as per the report, the company will likely launch the devices in India on the same date.

While Vivo India hasn’t confirmed the models, the company has revealed that the series will include Vivo V21 4G, V21 5G and V21e in Malaysia. On a microsite page, it has already revealed the features coming with the device.

The Vivo V21 series in Malaysia is said to have an AMOLED display with a teardrop notch upfront. And speaking of the front, the selfie camera will be a 44MP camera sensor and it will be assisted by two LED flashlights, OIS. The last time we saw the front-facing dual-LED flash was the Vivo S9 series in China.

On the back, we can expect two color variants and one of which will be a Blue color option. The Triple-camera setup will have a 64MP primary sensor with OIS. The camera layout, which reminds us of the iQOO 7 and Vivo X60 devices, has “AI camera” and “1.179-2.4 OIS” written beside the LED flash.

Under the hood, the Vivo V21 series is also said to a technology that is similar to the memory fusion we recently saw on iQOO Z3. Here, it will typically make a device with an 8GB RAM function like an 11GB version. That is, the additional 3GB RAM effect will be provided for mitigating the lags.

That said, it is worth noting that the Vivo V21 series was previously said to arrive with 5G to India before. However, the report by Moneycontrol says that only the Vivo V21 model will land in India on April 27. And the other devices will arrive at a later date.

Additionally, the report says that the Vivo V21 selfie camera will have Eye Auto Focus (AF), and probably retail for under ₹25,000. Eye Auto Focus tracks the movement of the eyes to make sure if the object is inside the frame.
