Vivo just unveiled its first mixed reality headset, the Vision Explorer Edition, at their recent launch event. This marks the company’s debut in the MR space, and they’re taking an interesting approach by starting with hands-on demo experiences before putting it on sale.

What really stands out is how light this thing is – just 398 grams. To put that in perspective, Apple‘s Vision Pro weighs over 600 grams, so Vivo has managed to shave off quite a bit of weight. They pulled this off using a split design with magnesium alloy components, which keeps it both sturdy and lightweight.

The headset itself is pretty compact too, measuring 83mm tall and 40mm thick. Vivo has thought about comfort with adjustable face masks, different foam padding options, and a dual-ring strap that releases quickly for easy adjustments.

Under the hood, you’re getting dual 8K Micro-OLED displays with 3840 × 3552 resolution per eye. The color reproduction looks solid with 94% DCI-P3 coverage and impressive color accuracy. Each headset is calibrated at the factory to make sure both eyes see consistent brightness and colors. If you wear glasses, magnetic optical lenses can handle prescriptions from 100 to 1000 degrees without compromising the visual experience.

The headset runs on Qualcomm‘s latest Snapdragon XR2+ chip, which Vivo says delivers 2.5 times better performance than the previous generation. They’ve built their own OriginOS Vision interface on top, enabling things like immersive movie watching, spatial sports replays, and multi-window productivity setups.

The passthrough feature is particularly impressive with just 13ms latency for full-color video, making the transition between real and virtual worlds feel seamless. For interaction, it tracks your eyes with 1.5-degree precision and recognizes hand gestures across 26 degrees of freedom within a 175-degree vertical range, basically letting you control things naturally with your eyes and hands.

Content-wise, Vivo has some exclusive experiences ready like “Drum Master” and “Little V’s Journey.” They’ve partnered with companies like Migu for sports content and made it compatible with PCs and smartphones for wireless streaming. There’s even a spatial photo feature that works with Vivo and iQOO phones.

Pricing and Availability

Here’s the catch though – you can’t buy one yet. Starting August 22nd, Vivo is setting up demo stations in 12 authorized stores across major Chinese cities like Beijing and Shenzhen, with more locations coming later. They want people to try it first.

As for pricing, nothing’s official, but Vivo executives hinted it could be around 10,000 yuan (about $1,395) or less. Their COO mentioned that smartphones really took off in China when prices got within 20-30% of basic phones, so they’re clearly trying to hit that sweet spot for MR adoption.

It’s an interesting strategy, focus on making it lighter and more affordable rather than cramming in every possible feature. We’ll have to see if it pays off when people start getting their hands on it.

Vivo has officially announced that its new mixed reality headset, the Vivo Vision Exploration Edition, will be unveiled on August 21 in China. Back in 2023, HTC launched the Vivo XR Elite as the world’s first mixed reality headset based on Android. The Vivo Vision will be the second MR headset from a well-known Android brand. Here’s a look at what to expect from the Vivo Vision.

Vivo Vision: What to expect?

The Vivo Vision is positioned as a mixed reality device rather than a traditional virtual reality headset, enabling a fusion of real-world visuals with digital overlays. Weighing around 380 grams, it is significantly lighter than the Apple Vision Pro at 650 grams and similar to the AirPods Max over-ear headphones.

This reduction in weight is expected to ease strain on the nose and head during prolonged use. The front panel includes at least six cameras or sensors, allowing for accurate real-world passthrough and improved immersion.

The headset will be powered by a Qualcomm processor, placing it among high-end MR devices. It incorporates both eye-tracking and hand gesture controls, a feature currently seen in only a handful of products worldwide. Vivo has designed the Vision to integrate seamlessly with its smartphone ecosystem, especially with the upcoming X200 Ultra, whose panoramic shots can be transformed into spatial video experiences when viewed through the headset. As an “exploration edition,” it will not be commercially available in 2025, but users can register for in-store trial sessions after launch to provide feedback for future models.

The Apple Vision Pro, a mixed reality headset, went official in February 2024. Rival brand Samsung officially confirmed during its recent earnings report that it will release an XR-capable headset dubbed Project Moohan, running Android XR, this year. Now, Vivo’s Product Manager has released an official statement that its mixed reality headset, named Vivo Vision, is also in the works.

Vivo Vision coming soon

Han Boxiao, Vivo’s Product Manager, shared his excitement about the upcoming Vivo Vision mixed reality headset. According to him, the company recently set up an MR experience zone, where he personally tried the soon-to-be-launched device and was left impressed.

He also shared the above image to tease the Vivo Vision’s design. To recall, the device was showcased at the Boao Forum for Asia, which was held in March 2025.

He highlighted three key impressions from his experience. First, the wearing comfort felt “addictive,” as the headset is extremely light. Although the exact weight remains undisclosed, he compared it to the comfort of wearing AirPods Max over-ear headphones.

Second, he praised the design as “addictive,” describing it as stunning, minimalist, elegant, and refined, with a flagship-level finish. Third, the user experience also left a strong impact; while he could not reveal too much, he shared that viewing panoramic photos taken by the upcoming Vivo X200 Ultra on the headset was a truly breathtaking experience. He added that preparations for the launch event are in full swing and encouraged interested users to follow official updates.

Meanwhile, tipster Digital Chat Station said that the Vivo Vision MR headset – Explorer Edition will be the first Apple Vision Pro–style MR device from a mainstream smartphone brand. He added that the device is expected to deliver an effortlessly immersive experience, and its launch is fast approaching.

Vivo’s next major launch event for the Chinese market will probably be held in September or October this year. It is likely to unveil the Vivo X300 series of flagship phones at the event. There is also a possibility that the Vivo Vision may debut alongside the X300 lineup.

After months of speculation, Vivo has finally unveiled its mixed reality (MR) headset at the Boao Forum for Asia. It’s called the Vision. If the name rings a bell, just wait until you see the device itself.

At first glance, the Vivo Vision looks strikingly similar to Apple’s headset. It features the same ski goggle-style design with a sleek, black glass front covering its front.

We can also see a bunch of cameras inside the front glass and within the body of the headset. These will likely be used for motion tracking and hand gesture recognition — a standard fare for this type of device.

But the similarities with Vision Pro don’t end there. Like it, Vivo’s MR headset also comes with a separate battery pack that needs to be carried while in use. Even the magnetic connector that links the battery to the headset appears to have the same knob-like design as Apple’s. 

It’s just a glimpse

For now, this is just a first look. Vivo hasn’t shared full specifications or software details about the headset, but the company says the prototype will be officially unveiled in mid-2025. 

Vivo is positioning the Vision headset as part of a larger push toward real-time spatial computing. A move it says will play a key role in future consumer robotics applications.

Alongside the headset, Vivo also announced the establishment of a new robotics lab in China. The lab will focus on developing AI-driven imaging and large model learning, which the company hopes will contribute to building the “brain” and “eyes” of future robots.

While Vivo remains tight-lipped about its headset, the company did confirm the launch of the Vivo X200 Ultra in April. The company might share more details about Vivo Vision around that time, so we’ll have to wait and see what’s next.
