It has been quite a week for Vivo. Two days ago, they launched the world’s thinnest cell phone, the Vivo X5 Max which is only 4.75mm thick.

This phone sports some pretty interesting specifications. First, its CPU chip is the 1.7GHz 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor. As for memory, it has 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM which can be increased to 128GB using a memory card like a TF card. This is also a dual-SIM 4G smart phone. It sports a 5mp front-facing camera and 13mp rear-facing camera with the Sony IMX214. Music enthusiasts may also be pleased to learn that it has all kinds of karaoke-related features. Its audio chip is the Yamaha YSS-205X and it supports Hi-Fi 2.0. Its operating system is the Android 4.4.4-based Funtouch OS 2.0. The Vivo X5 Max goes on sale on December 22 for 2998 RMB (485.64 USD).

Having said all that, let us now focus on the Vivo X5 Max’s display screen. How does its 5.5-inch 1080p display screen compare with the Vivo X5’s 5-inch 720p display screen. Both of them are not considered flagship phones but the X5 Max’s specs are what you can expect from flagship phones.

Furthermore, to make the X5 Max as thin as possible, Vivo decided to use a Super Amoled screen. Not only is it thinner but the colors and resolution are much better than the regular LCD cell phone screen. Compare the way the colors come out in both phones in these pictures.

As you can see, because of its use of a Super Amoled display screen, the colors in the Vivo X5 Max’s screen come out much better than in the Vivo X5.

Today, the we will compare the audio performance of the Meizu MX4 Pro with  other three devices: the Apple iPhone 6 Plus, Vivo X5, and HiFiMAN HM-901. Like the Meizu MX4 Pro, the Vivo X5 uses ESS9018K2M and has been weel-received by audio enthusiasts, while the HiFiMAN HM-901 was mentioned at Meizu’s launch. This device is a flagship portable music player that uses two standard-level ESS9018 chips.

All three devices have their place in the market. The iPhone 6 Plus is the highest selling phone among them and has great sound quality. The Vivo X5 is the first HiFi cellphone brand there is and its first generation phone also has excellent sound quality. The HiFiMAN HM-901 is a portable music player that has always received the best praise for its sound quality.

Meizu MX4 Pro vs. iPhone 6 Plus 

       Although the iPhone 6 Plus does not support HiFI, it is still important to mention it due to it being the most popular cellphone around. Besides, its sound quality is pretty good too. It may not be the best, but it is far from the worst.

Whether it’s at mid- and high-frequency or low-frequency, the Meizu MX4 Pro has the edge over the iPhone which has not had any significant improvement when it comes to audio frequency.

Meizu MX4 Pro vs. the Vivo X5

Meizu is not the first company to use the ESS9018 K2M chip. It’s just that the Meizu MX4 Pro is the most well-known one right now. Furthermore, we cannot talk about the ESS9018 K2M without mentioning Vivo. I would even go as far as say that this chip is the reason why Vivo existed in the first place. Unfortunately, the writer on has the Vivo X5 which does not use the ESS9018 K2M chip, but the famous CS4398 chip. This chip is also a popular chip among HiFi manufacturers.

The Vivo X5 is not as different from the Meizu MX4 Pro as the iPhone 6 Plus. Its sound quality is certainly better than the iPhone. The main difference lies in the feeling you get when listening to them, and this really depends on the person.

The Meizu MX4 Pro’s audio sounds more at ease and natural, while Vivo’s is more modern and emphasises more on the performance at the three frequencies and has a grainy sound. The MX4 Pro’s audio sounds a bit more relaxing and has more feeling in it.

Meizu MX4 Pro vs. HiFiMAN HM-901

       First, let’s discuss the sound quality of both devices at low frequency. The bass is much better in the HM-901 than the MX4 Pro, especially when playing classical orchestra music. When it comes to human voices, the HiFiMAN also has the advantage. There is more emotion in the sound and it sounds like someone is actually singing or talking near you. Pop music fans may like this as it makes it sound as if their favorite singer is right there with them.

At a high frequency, there are not too many differences in the sound quality between the two devices. The HM-901’s audio, though, sounds more real and natural.

Recently, Apple’s “partner” company, GT Advanced Technologies, which manufactures sapphire screen panels, filed for bankruptcy claiming that Apple did not use any of their sapphire screen panels. Actually, there really isn’t any reason for GTAT to worry as there are other companies out there that are interested in producing sapphire screens—like Vivo.

Vivo had announced that they will release Vivo X5L  sapphire version on the 15^th. Although, the provider of the sapphire screens has already been confirmed, Vivo may have considered looking at previous sapphire editions for inspiration for future models. So, GTAT should later consider a partnership with Vivo, especially considering the latter’s sales in China. If they had a partnership, then, GTAT would not have to file for bankruptcy.

Of course, this is just the writer rambling, but Vivo is doing what Apple didn’t (release a sapphire screen) do, which is depressing as it is doing it just as GTAT is filing for bankruptcy.

Back to the topic, the reason why Vivo wants to add a sapphire screen to the Vivo X5L is because of its durability. A sapphire screen is the second hardest material (It has a 9 in the Moh scale of hardness, with 10 being the highest). Second to diamond, it is one of the most durable materials on earth right now.

Theoretically, the harder the material, the stronger it is and unlikely to break. The only think that can even leave a dent on sapphire screen is a diamond. Most of the things we use in real life cannot possibly damage it.

Also, the transparency of sapphire screens is impressive. It is almost impossible to tell if there is a screen or not with the sapphire screen. Of course, producing such a screen is not cheap, so don’t be surprised if it is more expensive than the regular version.

About the Vivo X5L sapphire edition:

       This version of the Vivo “Karaoke King” X5 is the first Chinese smartphone to use a sapphire screen. Its specs are pretty much the same as the original. It has Hi-FI, the CS4398 audio chip, as well as the Yamaha YSS205X-CZE2. It also has a 1.7GHz octa-core processor from MTK, 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM, the Android 4.4, a 5mp/13mp dual-camera, and 4G LTE internet.

Vivo has recently released a special version of the Vivo X5. This version has a sapphire screen. Here’s our unboxing of this new version.

The Vivo X4 sapphire version comes with the same accessories as the regular version such as a pair of earphones, charger, and manual.

The Vivo X5 Sapphire Version shares the same specifications as the original version. It has a 5-inch 720p display screen which is nice. There does not seem to be any problems with it when you watch movies or play videogames. A 720p can provide good screen performance and also does not take too much power.

The receiver is located above the screen and is covered by a metal net to avoid scratches. On the left of it are sensors (proximity sensor, light sensor). On the right of it is the phone’s 5mp front-facing camera with 88 degree wide angle and beauty enhancement feature. Overall, this camera is pretty good.

Below the screen are the usual buttons. From left to right, there’s the menu button, home button, and return button. The image in the Home button has changed into a sapphire stone. There is still no back light.The Vivo X5 Sapphire Version has a thickness of 6.3mm.

The top and bottom part of the back are made of plastic while the middle part is made of metal. The texture is the same all throughout the surface. This phone sports a 13mp rear-facing Sony camera with a closed-loop motor that can turn on the quick shot function. This function is almost twice as fast here as in a regular camera.

When we first tested this phone, the sapphire glass on the screen was pretty strong. Vivo usually adds a protective cover on the screens of their products, but since it’s a sapphire screen, they decided not to add one as it is strong by itself.

Today, Vivo announced in its Weibo account that it will release a sapphire-screen version of the “King of Karaoke,” the Vivo X5. Pre-orders may start a few days from now and a limited number of devices will be sold only. It will not be expensive and cost only 2998 RMB.

The regular only costs 2498 RMB, so adding a sapphire screen has result in making it about 500 RMB more expensive. This is much better than the Huawei P7 sapphire-screen version (4688 RMB/763.67 USD) which is almost twice as expensive as the original.

The Vivo X5 sapphire version goes on sale on October 15.
