Recently, Apple’s “partner” company, GT Advanced Technologies, which manufactures sapphire screen panels, filed for bankruptcy claiming that Apple did not use any of their sapphire screen panels. Actually, there really isn’t any reason for GTAT to worry as there are other companies out there that are interested in producing sapphire screens—like Vivo.

Vivo had announced that they will release Vivo X5L  sapphire version on the 15^th. Although, the provider of the sapphire screens has already been confirmed, Vivo may have considered looking at previous sapphire editions for inspiration for future models. So, GTAT should later consider a partnership with Vivo, especially considering the latter’s sales in China. If they had a partnership, then, GTAT would not have to file for bankruptcy.

Of course, this is just the writer rambling, but Vivo is doing what Apple didn’t (release a sapphire screen) do, which is depressing as it is doing it just as GTAT is filing for bankruptcy.

Back to the topic, the reason why Vivo wants to add a sapphire screen to the Vivo X5L is because of its durability. A sapphire screen is the second hardest material (It has a 9 in the Moh scale of hardness, with 10 being the highest). Second to diamond, it is one of the most durable materials on earth right now.

Theoretically, the harder the material, the stronger it is and unlikely to break. The only think that can even leave a dent on sapphire screen is a diamond. Most of the things we use in real life cannot possibly damage it.

Also, the transparency of sapphire screens is impressive. It is almost impossible to tell if there is a screen or not with the sapphire screen. Of course, producing such a screen is not cheap, so don’t be surprised if it is more expensive than the regular version.

About the Vivo X5L sapphire edition:

       This version of the Vivo “Karaoke King” X5 is the first Chinese smartphone to use a sapphire screen. Its specs are pretty much the same as the original. It has Hi-FI, the CS4398 audio chip, as well as the Yamaha YSS205X-CZE2. When news that the iPhone 6 would use a sapphire screen broke out, more brands followed suit. Soon, Huawei announced that they would also release a version of the P7 with a sapphire screen. Now, Vivo has joined in by confirming that they will release a limited edition of the X5L with a sapphire screen.

Many videos featuring testing of the sapphire X5L have hit the web that confirm the news. The videos show that the sapphire screen has greater hardness and abrasion resistance and does not consume more power. The biggest selling point of the Vivo X5L is its Karaoke features and its glamorous package is incredible. The sapphire screen should only leave more users in awe.

Other than the glass, all the other specifications will be the same. Its processor will still be the MTK6592 octa-core chipset. It will have 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM, sport a 5-inch 720p screen and 5mp/13mp camera, and will be powered by a 2230mAh battery. It also has a built-in Yamaha signal chip and a combination of the CS4398 and MAX97220 HiFi solution.

Given the higher production costs, expect this phone’s price to be higher than the regular X5L’s 2498 RMB price (406.58 USD).

On August 20th, Vivo exposed the posters in the subject of “Something is going to change your life” in its official Weibo, which indicates that new products would be launched recently, and it is expected to use the blue diamond screen in this product firstly before iPhone 6, in the evening of August 20th, the photos of vivo new flagship real machine were exposed in the internet, with the official name of X5L.

The related Weibo has been deleted, while some people kept the related photos. Viewed from the photos exposed, X5L still follows the classical three- segment rear design of vivo, little changes at the front panel, and the middle frame applies metal frame design as Xshot, which looks like a combination of Xshot and X3. Before vivo disclosed that its first product with sapphire glass screen will be launched recently, it is probably vivo X5L.

From screenshot we can see the machine is officially named X5L, which can estimate it is the mobile 4G version, with the processor of 1.7GHz eight cores (MT6595 or MT6592), runs the Funtouch OS 1.2 operation system based on the Android 4.4.2.  An as the extension of X series, X5L would have more powerful HiFi music experience. The price for the first blue diamond screen flagship of vivo will be up to 3998 RMB, which will be the highest for the domestic cell phone.
