The battle line is drawn, but this is no Shuai jiao contest, neither is it your favorite Wrestlemania or Boxing bout. Instead, this a comparison of the speed of the fast charging technologies featured on the smartphones of the top five global smartphone companies. In case you’ve forgotten, Samsung, Apple, Huawei, OPPO and Vivo occupy the top 5 spots in terms of mobile phone shipments globally for 2016. While Samsung, Apple and Huawei had built formidable reputations for themselves over the years, OPPO rode on the back of its VOOC fast charge technology on the OPPO R9 to help shore up its sales, the result of which is still being felt today. Fellow Chinese co-traveller Vivo also has fast charging technologies which is one of its main selling points.

So, the fast charging feature onboard the Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro, Huawei Mate 9, OPPO R9 Plus and Vivo X9 Plus are put to test, all at the same time and the same battery level (0%) to determine which one actually charges faster. To set the records straight, the Galaxy C9 Pro, Mate 9, R9 Plus and X9 Plus, all have 4,000mAh battery capacity, while the iPhone 7 Plus comes with a 2910mAh battery. We must also point out that the iPhone 7 Plus doesn’t come with fast charging support but then, it is one of the top selling and most expensive smartphones so it squares up against the others.

After 5 minutes of charge (results pictured above), OPPO R9S Plus was able to attain 8% battery capacity while the Huawei Mate 9 got 10%, the highest level of the lot. The Apple iPhone 7 Plus was just at 4%, the Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro at 7% and the Vivo X9 Plus surprisingly was at 9%.

In 30 minutes (results pictured above), the Huawei Mate 9 with its innovative fast charging technology was well ahead at 56%, the R9 Plus and Vivo X9 Plus was trailing at 49% apiece, the Galaxy C9 Pro at 36% and finally the iPhone 7 Plus was only at 19%.

In 60 minutes (results pictured above), the Mate 9 and R9 Plus were both at 89% while the X9 Plus had gotten to 86%. The Samsung galaxy C9 Pro was trailing at 68% and then the iPhone 7 Plus at 38%. Obviously, Apple iPhones don’t come with fast charge support and that really has no effect on sales, but it sure would have made a lot of difference to add that to their selling points.

At 90 minutes (results pictured above), only the Huawei Mate 9 had attained full 100% charge, an applaudable feat. The OPPO R9 Plus was very close by at 98% of charge, the Vivo X9 Plus was also at 98% while the Galaxy C9 Pro was at 95%. The iPhone 7 Plus was still lagging behind at 57% even when it had a smaller battery capacity.

The test allowed the charge time to extend to 150 minutes and in that time as shown above, the Mate 9 and R9 Plus had stopped charging. The Vivo X9 Plus and Galaxy C9 Pro had also reached 100% in 150 minutes, while the Phone 7 Plus was only at 69%.

The test had to be stretched to 190 minutes (pictured above), that is 3 hours and 10 minutes before the iPhone 7 Plus charged up to 100%. That is quite slow, but with an efficient Apple A10 chip onboard, the battery isn’t expected to drain as fast as the others.

Related: Huawei Mate 9 Super Charge Tested: Super Fast charging Technology

From the graph based on the fast charge test results, the Huawei Mate 9 with the steepest curve has the most efficient fast charge technology. This is followed by the OPPO R9 Plus and its VOOC fast charge technology. OPPO and Vivo are from the same parent company, so it is no surprise that the Vivo X9 Plus has almost similar charge pattern. The Galaxy C9 Pro followed closely and finally the iPhone 7 Plus came quite a distance behind the quartet.

The Vivo X9 Plus features not just a larger display size than the X9, but also a larger RAM size, as well as a different Qualcomm SoC and bigger battery capacity. Besides these features, the X9 Plus seems not to be different from the X9.

Taking a look at the specifications, the Vivo X9 Plus features a mammoth 5.88-inch IPS display which places it in the category of a phablet. The display comes with Full HD resolution (aka 1080 pixels). The device features an aluminum body which limits the thickness to just 7.45mm despite the larger capacity battery crammed inside. the device also weighs 199g.

The Vivo X9 Plus is fired up by an Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 (MSM8976 Pro) processor comprising four Cortex-A72 cores clocked at 1.95GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz. The X9 Plus packs a larger 6GB of RAM inside as well as 64GB of internal storage which is non-expandable. Vivo did retain the same front-facing dual camera set up on the X9 Plus packing same 20MP + 8MP sensors. There is also a 16MP rear camera with LED flash and the device also runs Funtouch OS 3.0 based on Android Marshmallow 6.0.

Furthermore, the Vivo X9 packs a larger 4,000mAh battery under its hood and comes in Rose gold and gold color variants as well. The device also features HiFi audio system integrated with ES9018 + ES9603 chips. In case you’re wondering what price the X9 Plus comes in at, you’ll have to wait some more as Vivo will announce the retail price on December 26. However, the device would go on sale via online and offline channels as well.

News of the upcoming devices have been in circulation for weeks now and one feature that has been confirmed is the use of dual-front facing cameras akin to what you have on the LG V10. However, the full configuration of both phones have been leaked online, confirming previous leaks and revealing new details.

The Vivo X9 will have a 3050mAh battery, a fingerprint scanner,and a dedicated AK4376 HiFi audio chip. The bands supported have also been listed as: B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B8, B38, B39, B40, and B41.

Vivo X9 Plus

The Vivo X9 Plus is not only bigger with a larger 5.88-inch FHD screen, but also sports a 6GB RAM, and a larger 4000mAh battery. Storage is the same at 64GB and the processor is Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 653. It has the same camera setup as the X9 but uses dual HiFi audio chips (ES9018+ES9603). Band support is no different too.

As you would recall, the Vivo X9 is touted to come with a dual camera set up on the selfie shooter and that is the main highlight of the flagship. The company also shared a couple of renders of the device, all mean’t to tease the X9.

The camera samples are clear selfie shots of a beautiful lady in different equally beautiful background settings. The selfie shots are very clear with all details rendered in perfect natural outlook. The images are devoid of grains or image noise even though one of them was shot inside a house while the other one was outdoors. The lady’s skin color also came out very clear and natural, as well as other features and contours on her body. All these were achieve because the Vivo X9 uses the latest beauty algorithm.

The front camera is a dual setup, so we expect to see the bokeh effect and it did come out very well. A cool background blur could be seen on both images. In addition, the camera seem to have a very efficient focus.

To recall, the Vivo X9 packs a 20MP Sony IMx376 sensor jointly developed with Sony along with an 8MP secondary camera for depth of field at the front as well as an all-metal streamlined body. The device will have a 5.5-inch screen with Gorilla Glass 5 protection, while the X9 Plus will come in at a larger 6-inch display. Both the Vivo X6 and X6 Plus are said to be powered by the same Snapdragon 653 processor and there would be two RAM versions with the higher version packing 6GB of RAM while the base model is said to come in with a 4GB RAM.

Vivo has confirmed November 16 as the date for the official launch of the Vivo X9 and X9 Plus, and both phones have already gotten their network certification from the Ministry of Industry.

The Vivo X9 and X9L have full network support, so if you are on a CDMA network and wish to change your phone soon, you may want to add either of these phones to your list.

Vivo has focused on the design of both phones. Promotional images show a device with very thin bezels. Sources say they have used the latest COS narrow border technology to arrive at a bezel size of just 1.59mm. They’ve also put Corning’s 5th generation glass on top of the display for protection. The antenna lines also sport a U-design that goes around the top of the phone.

The unique selling point of the X9 is its dual-front facing cameras (20MP+8MP) which work together to capture HD depth of field images. The 20MP sensor captures the details and the 8MP sensor obtains the depth information resulting in SLR bokeh images. The X9 Plus on the other hand is said to have dual cameras on the back as well, making it a total of 4 sensors.

The Vivo X9 will launch with a 5.5” FHD display, 4GB of RAM, and a Snapdragon 653 chip. The X9 Plus will have a 6” display, the same processor and possibly 6GB of RAM.

Vivo’s recent releases have been decent, but nothing extraordinary as compared to its rivals. However, that will change with the Vivo X9 and X9 Plus models. The company confirmed earlier today that the Vivo X9 and X9 Plus models will come equipped with dual front cameras. Yes, you heard it right!

It’s confirmed that the Vivo X9 will be the first commercial smartphone with dual front-facing selfie cameras. The company has also made sure its going to be powerful, as one of the cameras will be a 20MP sensor while the second one should most likely be an 8MP sensor. The dual cameras up front should function similar to the Xiaomi Redmi Pro, bringing features such as bokeh to selfies.

RELATED: OPPO Edges Huawei to Top Q3 2016 Phone Sales in China, Vivo Comes Second

As for the specs, both the Vivo X9 and the X9 Plus are said to feature Snapdragon 653 chipsets with 4GB and 6GB RAM options. The Vivo X9 will most likely feature a 5.5-inch 1080p display while the X9 Plus should come with a larger 6-inch 1080p panel. There is no information about the cameras at the back, but could Vivo equip its larger Vivo X9 Plus with dual cameras at the back as well? This will take the total to four cameras on the phone! But the company is yet to confirm the rear camera details, so we better wait for more details.

Meanwhile, the Vivo X9 and X9 Plus models are said to be announced mid-November, most likely on November 17. Design wise, the new models are said to look similar to the previous generation devices from the front, however, the back is said to rock an iPhone7-like antenna design.
