Earlier today (6th January 2023), Vivo announced that it is rolling out support for next gen Ray Tracing technology for its latest flagship series, the Vivo X90, which would offer an improved gaming experience on these devices. So here are all the details.

The Chinese smartphone maker is bringing the support for the Ray Tracing technology on a hardware flagship chip level, thanks to the X90 series featuring MediaTek Dimensity 9200 SoC and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. For those unaware, Ray Tracing is basically a new lighting and shading tech for games. While games typically employed pre-rendered shadows and lighting in their games, Ray Tracing turns this process into a real time function. Meaning, a light source can dynamically affect the environment around the user.

In simpler terms, this makes games run at a higher graphical fidelity, which improves the overall immersion of the game itself since simulated light sources improves reflections, refraction, and shadow effects. Under the hood, the Vivo X90 and X90 Pro pack the Dimensitu 9200 SoC while the X90 Pro+ variant houses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Both of these chipset support ray tracing tech on smartphones for certain applications.

Meaning, the whole series will be able to offer its users an improved gaming experience. This technology is further supplemented with the inclusing of a chip level optical tracing computing tech that was self developed by the brand. It is called the FALCON graphics engine that is paired with AI algorithms to help offer immersive lighting and shadow effects.

On November 22, Vivo will launch the X90 series in China, which is anticipated to include three models: vanilla, Pro, and Pro+. While the vanilla and Pro variants are officially confirmed to be powered by the Dimensity 9200 SoC, the Vivo X90 Pro+ is expected to use the recently unveiled Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

The brand also confirms that a 50MP Sony IMX758 camera will also be included in the X90 series. Furthermore, the image posted by Vivo, which bears the caption “two independent portrait lenses go beyond,” depicts the back of an X90 smartphone with four cameras, the top-right camera likely being a periscope unit. The smartphone’s name has not been revealed, but it is most likely the X90 Pro+. Some camera specs are printed on the right side of the camera island below the LED flash.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 is based on TSMC’s second-generation 4nm process that offers better heat dissipation. The company says that the CPU peak performance power consumption is reduced by 25 percent compared to its predecessor. The Dimensity 9200 is also the first to integrate an ARM Cortex-X3 prime core clocked at 3.05GHz based on ARMv9 architecture. There are also three ARM Cortex-A715 cores ticking at 2.85GHz and four Cortex-A510 cores at 1.8GHz. The SoC also includes the new ARM Immortalis -G715 GPU with a hardware-based ray tracing engine and variable rate rendering technology. The chipset scores 1.26 million points on AnTuTu benchmarking platform surpassing all Android flagships.

Apart from the aforementioned technical specifications of the Dimensity 9200, it supports LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. It also supports up to two 5K resolution displays at 60Hz, WHQD at 144Hz, and FHD at 240Hz. The Miravision 980 display technology is said to bring content to life. The processor includes sixth-generation AI NPU (APU 900) that offers 35 percent improvements over its predecessor. The SoC is claimed to offer 30 percent power savings with AI-NR and 45 percent with AI-SR in all visual applications. The Dimensity 9200 features Imagiq 890 ISP that brings native support for RGBW sensors that are capable of shooting RAW quickly, giving 30 percent more light, sharper and brighter low-light HDR videos and photos.

The Dimensity 9200 is the first WiFi-7-ready smartphone processor. It also integrates a built-in 5G modem with support for both sub-6GHz and mmWave connections.

The first MediaTek Dimensity 9200-powered phones are expected to launch by the end of 2022, which is less than two months from now. At the event, Vivo confirmed that it would launch a flagship phone with the latest MediaTek processor. Although the smartphone’s name remains a mystery, we expect it to be the X90 series. OPPO has also confirmed that the next-generation Find X will be equipped with the Dimensity 9200 SoC. Additionally, other executives from Xiaomi, Honor, and ASUS ROG also confirmed that they are looking forward to launching smartphones with the latest MediaTek’s flagship chipset.

It is highly likely that Vivo might officially announce or hint at the launch date of the X90 series at this event. The upcoming lineup is expected to carry three devices – Vivo X90, Vivo X90 Pro, and Vivo X90 Pro plus. These devices will succeed the highly acclaimed Vivo X80 series which is widely praised for its excellent camera performance, partly made possible by the Vivo V1+ ISP chip. After the Chinese launch, the X90 series is also expected to arrive in the global markets to butt heads against flagships like the iPhone 14 series, the Pixel 7 series, the upcoming Xiaomi 13 series, and the Oppo Find X6 series.

Currently, not much is known about the Vivo X90 series, however, it is almost certain that the devices in the lineup will run the latest Snapdragon/ Dimensity flagship chipsets. These will be the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip and the Dimensity 9200 SoC.

The top-of-the-line Vivo X90 Pro Plus is rumored to feature the Dimensity 9200 chipset and a 1-inch camera sensor, in conjunction with an ultra-wide lens, and a 64-megapixel telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and the V2 ISP chip. Earlier rumors have also stated that we might see a curved AMOLED LTPO display with a Quad HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz on the X90 Pro Plus. A 5000mAh battery unit with 100W fast charging is also expected to be on board with the device.

If true, it’s certainly good news for those who like MediaTek’s chipsets over Qualcomm’s offerings. Moreover, recent Dimensity processors have shown some promising performance. For instance, Dimensity 9000 took first place in AnTuTu when sorted by Overall score, beating Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 by almost 15 percent.

Previous reports suggest the Vivo X90 Pro+, which will be the higher-end model in the series, will offer some serious camera performance. It is said to arrive with a 1-inch main camera and a 64-megapixel telephoto sensor that may offer 5x optical zoom.

Further, the handset is tipped to be equipped with a Samsung E6 AMOLED display, LPDDR5x RAM, and UFS 4.0 storage. It will likely be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Soc.
