Samsung is gearing up to compete against the Chinese smartphone giants like Xiaomi and OPPO in the mid to low-end segment.

According to a report by TheElec, Samsung, one of the largest smartphone companies globally thanks to its industry-leading flagship devices, is looking to strengthen its position by introducing the waterproofing function to its mid and low-end smartphone models, starting next year.

The decision comes as a twofold solution, helping Samsung increase the appeal of their mid to low range smartphones as well as simplifying the production process of the smartphone’s back cover, reducing cost.

Currently, Samsung provides the waterproof feature exclusively in their flagships like the Galaxy S21 and some high-mid range offerings. According to the report, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A33, which is rumored to launch in January next year, will be the first phone under this initiative to receive the waterproof feature. It is too early to say if the phone will feature the same IP68 rating that the Galaxy S21 is equipped with.

For those unaware, IP, or Ingress Protection, is a universally accepted measurement of varying degrees for dust and liquid resistance. Devices backed by an international standard rating of IP68 are deemed fit enough to withstand dust, dirt, and sand, and are resistant to submersion up to a maximum depth of 1.5m underwater for up to thirty minutes.

On the other hand, Samsung also decided to simplify the production process for the rear cover of smartphones next year, changing the number of injections and coatings from 2 to 1. Injection refers to the process of molding the plastics, and coating is a technique for applying color to the surface of a product using spray paint. An industry official stated, “Reducing the number of injections and coating will significantly reduce the production cost.”

While Honor is gearing up for the August 12 launch of the Magic 3 series, the company has just shared another teaser for the upcoming lineup. In a new video, the brand has teased the water and drop resistance capabilities of the Magic 3 smartphones.

This video was shared on the company’s official Weibo account, a Chinese microblogging website, earlier today (5th August 2021). Looking at this video, the Magic 3 model can be seen dropping from the atmosphere of Mars down to the surface and landing on one of its corners without any damage. In other words, the Chinese smartphone maker has basically teased the anti drop/shock resistance of the Magic 3 lineup.

At the moment, the brand has yet to specify any IP certification grade apart from teasing its fall resistance. Similarly earlier this week, Honor had also teased the water resistance of the upcoming Magic 3 series in another teaser video. In this, the device was dropped into water while still playing a video to showcase the company’s water proofing efforts. This is all the information we have to go as of right now. More and more manufacturers are adding waterproofing on their major flagships in the past few years. However, this was also a major feature that was missing on OnePlus’ flagships, at least until now. This is definitely welcome news for fans who desperately wanted this feature. Samsung and Sony flagships have always been waterproof but it came at a price. Their top-end models cost upwards of $700, which doesn’t exactly make them affordable. On the other hand, the OnePlus 6 is expected to retain the affordable price tag, which gives customers a solid choice for a waterproof / water resistant flagship without having to shell out a lot of money.

A few weeks ago, JESY release new generation J9S rugged phone.  It’s the  first Android phone with both IP68 and MIL-STD-810G testing standard. In short, it can be called as the strongest rugged smartphone so far. Further, to spice things up, it looks a bit different than other rugged phones.

While the number of IP68 phones are increasing,  their number is still very limited. But for many, it’s a very important feature for their everyday use. While you may know IP68 standard,  MIL-STE-810G standard isn’t that common and hence I think its best to get an explanation from wikipedia.

When I first saw this phone, it’s really huge, bigger than all normal phones I have ever used. For the specs, it features a 5.5-inch full HD screen, MediaTek MT6755 octa-core processor, along with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Other features include a 16MP rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and a front shooter of 8MP. Also, there is a super-fast fingerprint sensor as well as an IR blaster on top and NFC sensor under the back. These are pretty powerful specs for rugged smartphone.

JESY J9S is powered by a huge 6150mAh battery, it’s bigger than most 5.5-inch phones. The battery went down to 11% power after 9 hours normal using from 49%. As JESY official says, it offers more than a full day use and week-long standby time. Surprisingly, it also support Qi wireless charging which is only found on some high-end smartphone.

ZTE’s Nubia Z17 flagship may be the next Snapdragon 835-powered smartphone we would be meeting after the HTC U11 but that isn’t the only spectacular thing about the upcoming model. Apart from the revelation that the device would feature a bezel-less display along with the Snapdragon 835 firepower, the Z17 is also coming with an IP67 water and dustproof build.

A short 15 seconds video clip demonstrating the waterproof property of the Nubia Z17 has appeared online on China’s Weibo. The video clearly shows the device under a running tap inside a sink and still operational! There wasn’t any sign of the functioning being affected by water and the picture still remained sharp and crisp clear. We don’t have many details to verify if really the device is the Nubia Z17 as the video only showed the front view of the device. But the smartphone seems to have a bezel-less display just as the Z17 is said to have. The phone also looks like the Nubia Z11 but the Z11 isn’t waterproof and so, could not have continued functioning under water. The Nubia Z17 has lately made a couple of appearances on TENAA and in benchmarks including AnTuTu where it was revealed that the flagship may take the bar to 8GB RAM on its topmost model. The Xiaomi Mi 6 has not launched yet and lately  we have been getting conflicting details in terms of design. In spite of that, some online stores have started listing cases for the Mi 6. It is either they know something we don’t or they are just taking a risk and betting that they are right with the design.

Judging from the design of the case, we can see there is no cut-out for the earphone jack. It appears the rumor of Xiaomi ditching the audio jack to make the phone waterproof is true. However we can see cut-outs for dual cameras on the rear and a dual LED flash.

Another unique design on the case is the presence of cut-outs at the four corners for the antenna lines. This is a new design different from that of the Xiaomi Mi 5 which sits at the top and bottom of the phone and that of the Mi 5s Plus that goes across the back plate.

There is no doubt the Xiaomi Mi 6 is on its way and its launch is drawing closer, considering the spate of new leaks surrounding the device. The Mi 6 promises to offer lots of new features and among the lot is the Snapdragon 835 chipset that would pilot the affairs on board the flagship.

Another new feature may have just been discovered with a new leak that emerged. The leak is that of the SIM card tray of the Mi 6 lying on top of that of the Mi 5. In comparison, the Mi 6 SIM tray looks thicker with watertight features than the Mi 5’s SIM tray which isn’t water tight. Apart from revealing that the Mi 6 would pack dual SIM slots, the SIM card tray also reveal another stunning feature which is the presence of waterproofing on the trays.

Waterproofing the SIM tray or making it water tight only means one thing, that is the presence of IP67 level of water and dust protection on the flagship. If that should be the case, then earlier rumours that the Mi 6 would not feature the 3.5mm audio jack may just have some credibility. We had also seen leaked image of the Xaiomi Bluetooth headphone X which would function as the Mi 6’s wireless headphones. We still haven’t seen how the USB Type-C slot would look like in order to support the waterproof and dustproof feature. The Mi 6 details just keep getting juicier. News about the Xiaomi Mi 6 keep on pouring in everyday. There have been lots of details about the upcoming flagship. There are rumors of it launching with two size variants; a Snapdragon 821 processor; and dual cameras. We have also heard of the launch date being pushed forward. Today’s info is a bigger surprise as it is a move we’ve never expected Xiaomi capable of making.

According to a Weibo post by an industry professional, Xiaomi’s Mi 6 will ditch the headphone jack and there is a high chance of it being waterproof. Surprised? We are too.

Xiaomi will not be the first Chinese manufacturer to ditch the audio jack. Last year, LeEco did the same with its phones. However, quite a number of people will rather not purchase a phone without an earphone jack as the trouble associated with its absence may not be considered worth it.  Most people don’t want to shell out extra money purchasing a new pair of wireless earphones neither would they like the idea of attaching an adapter to use their existing wired ones.

If Xiaomi is indeed removing the audio jack, it may in fact be shooting itself in the foot. There are still major manufacturers that have retained the audio jack on their phones. LG is an example and so is Samsung and Huawei.  If these options didn’t exist, then it would be a different case entirely.

Last year, Xiaomi didn’t do very well. Fellow Chinese brands Huawei, OPPO, and Vivo recorded more sales than it did. These companies didn’t follow the trend but rather came up with some very interesting developments especially in camera and battery technology. If Xiaomi wants to reclaim its position in China, then it should consider giving the people what they want.

For the case of waterproofing (or water resistance), that too is a surprise. Last year, Xiaomi CEO had said in an interview that the reason for not making waterproof phones is because the protection deteriorates when the phone has a fault and needs to be repaired. He also mentioned that adding waterproofing will drive the cost of the phone up. Xiaomi is known for offering flagship-grade phones for half the price of what you get from other manufacturers. If it is adding extra protection, that means customers will be paying more for its phones.

OnePlus is still basking in the aura of positive reviews generated by the OnePlus 3T. So there is no reason to rush to release a successor yet. The folks at DBS Designing can’t wait for a successor and have made a render of the OnePlus 4.

For the design, DBS Designing have gone back to the OnePlus 1 for inspiration which personally, I believe has a better design than the OnePlus 3. Basically, you can call it the OnePlus 1 (2017) as it incorporates all the features you should find in a flagship device released this year.

First you have got thinner bezels on all sides. Practically non-existent on the left and right and considerably thinner at the top and bottom. That way, the phone can have a larger display but still maintain the footprint of the OnePlus 3. The top bezel still houses the front camera, speaker and proximity sensor, while the lower bezel holds a physical home button and capacitive back and recent apps keys. It seems the home button also doubles as a fingerprint scanner since there is none at the back.

The OnePlus 4 also gets the dual-camera treatment on the rear. You will notice they have made sure not to exceed the length of the camera housing of the OnePlus 1 but at the expense of ditching the laser focus module.

For specifications, the OnePlus 4 will sport the Snapdragon 835 processor, have 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, though there will be a 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM variant. The rear cameras will be 18 megapixel shooters while the front camera will remain a 16MP sensor. Although the screen size is unknown as that looks larger than 5.5-inches but expect it to be a Quad HD+ screen, giving it Daydream support.

2017 seems to be the year where you either make your phone waterproof or you go home. This OnePlus 4 render ticks the waterproof box but expect it to raise the price of the device. There is a 5000mAh battery under the hood and with Dash Charge support. The bottom of the phone also sports a USB Type-C port flanked on both sides by dual speakers.

The big surprise is the OS. DBS Designing have slapped Lineage OS on the rear just the way the original OnePlus first launched with Cyanogen OS. Chances of this happening in real life is next to impossible. Oxygen OS has come a long way already and OnePlus will not drop it for Lineage. But since this is a render, you are allowed to let your imagination run wild.

There’s no AMOLED screen nor Android Wear (or regular android) and neither will you be able to change watch faces like you can do on the Huawei Watch. Do you remember the Elephone W2 Smartwatch? That’s what Meizu’s new watch reminds me of.

The Meizu Light Smartwatch however has it’s own strong points such as its stylish design and 240 days of standby power which is pretty impressive. The watch comes in 5 varieties to match different occasions/activities. There’s one with a chain-strap that comes in gun metal black and silver colours; if you prefer leather, you can also pick one of two colour options, brown or black; and a final one that has a blue and white nylon strap.

Specifications/Connectivity

Dimensions for the watch says it will have a 42 mm diameter dial and 12 mm thickness. The Meizu light smartwatch’s surface is protected by sapphire glass and features a 316L solid steel band and frame. The leather version has its straps made from Italian leather.  There’s bluetooth 4.0, a three-axis gyroscope, an accelerometer (for measuring steps), magnetic sensor, and a 270 mAh battery built-in. It is also water resistant up to 99 ft/30 meters (3 ATM).

Pairing the watch to your phone should be pretty easy after downloading the app as long as your phone supports bluetooth 4.0 and above.

Price

The watch is priced according to the straps. The unit with the nylon strap costs 999 Yuan ($150), the version with the leather strap costs 1299 Yuan ($196), and the one with the chain strap costs  1499 Yuan ($226).

If you want to purchase this watch, you should head to Taobao’s crowdfunding page and save yourself some cash as the price will definitely increase if you decide you want to wait for re-sellers.

Samsung Mobile Korea has released the first Galaxy Note 7 TV ad. The advert which is just 30 seconds long confirms a couple of features like multiple phone lock options such as fingerprint and the regular pattern lock. The advert teases other features such as multiple old rotary dial telephones submerged in water which indicates the Note 7 will be waterproof (a first for the Note series), allowing the phone to be immersed in up to 5-feet of water for a duration of 30 minutes.

There is also a lady holding a blurred out phone in one hand (which is probably the Note 7) trying to take a selfie while holding a light bulb to her face with the other hand. This translates into the Note 7 featuring a LED flash in front.

Another teaser is the presence of multiple highlighter pens used on different texts. We interpret this to mean that you will be able to copy multiple texts with the Note’s S-pen and choose which you want to paste when you want. So that eliminates the issue of a new copied text overwriting the previous one.

We also see a bunch of neon numerical lights from 0 to 5 and a question mark, with a text above it that translates to ”5, then 6?”.

This isn’t difficult to decipher. It’s no news that Samsung is skipping the 6 and moving on to 7 in the naming. The reasons for this is to have a uniform name with the S-Line of the same year (S7 and S7 Edge) and stop the assumption that the Note series offers older technology because it has a lower number. (The latter reason is weird though).

Samsung ends the Note 7 TV ad by confirming the release date is in August. Next Tuesday to be precise.

The note series has been very successful since the first generation and every version is always keenly looked forward to. The Note 7 is going to be better by featuring the new Snapdragon 821 SoC, a bigger battery, an iris scanner, and a dual-edge curved display.

Lei jun, the founder of Xiaomi explains why his company doesn’t manufacture waterproof phones even though customers have requested for it. Mr. Jun states that when a waterproof phone gets damaged even if it is a minor one, the waterproof protection deteriorates.

Another reason is the high cost of waterproof devices; Xiaomi is known for offering high-end phones for almost half the price of other flagships. So adding waterproof protection is sure going to drive the price up. However, he says if customers are willing to pay 20% to 30% of the additional cost required for the protection,the company might consider building a waterproof phone.

So if the lack of waterproof protection is a deal breaker for you when it comes to buying a phone, you know you need to steer clear of Xiaomi phones. You should probably consider the Samsung S7, S7 Edge, or S7 Active.
