Google has finally unveiled the latest smartwatch operating system, Wear OS 4. The Google Wear OS 4 was part of the highlights of the Google I/O Conference 2023. Wear OS 4 offers significant improvements in battery life over its predecessor. It also offers user data backup functionality for enhanced user security. The Wear OS 4 is expected to debut on the Google Pixel Watch 2 and the Galaxy Watch6 series. Google also provided a preview of Android 14 OS.

The latest Wear OS update is the first by Google in three years. Google still keeps the release date of the Wear OS 4 under wraps, in line with current trends. Google will offer the Wear OS 4 updates to Pixel and Galaxy models. It is speculated that Wear OS 4 will ship first on the Pixel Watch 2 and Galaxy Watch 6 series before it becomes available to other models.

Google did not release hardware requirements for Wear OS 4. It is however expected that the new OS will be compatible with the latest smartwatch chipsets. The Wear OS 4 update brings improved battery life when compared with its predecessor, Wear OS 3. A critical improvement is the addition of the XML watch face format. The new format eliminates executable codes which in turn reduces performance overheads. The OS also handles a backup feature similar to Apple’s watchOS architecture.
