WhatsApp continues to gain new features and functions. For example, we recently told you that the e-mail verification feature will be coming to the application. However, there is a problem for Meta, the owner of the application. WhatsApp is a free application and does not generate any revenue for the company in any way. For this reason, there have been rumors for a long time that advertising will come to the platform. Finally, Will Cathcart, the head of the company, answered questions such as “Will WhatsApp be paid and will it show ads?” Here are the details…

Get Ready to See Ads While Using WhatsApp

Let’s start with the question of whether WhatsApp will be paid first. No, the application will not be paid under any circumstances for now. However, a step has been taken towards making it paid. Will Cathcart announced that there will be no ads in the chat section of the application, but they plan to show ads in the Status and Channels sections.

We do not have any information about how advertising will be displayed in the Channels section. However, we have information about the Status section thanks to Instagram. As we are used to from the social media platform, we will see Status-formatted ads when switching between shares. This is of course an annoying development for a platform that is free. The real question is what can happen later.

As you know, many platforms that were once free and earned money with advertising revenue are now implementing different strategies. They charge users monthly for their services. In return, they offer additional features such as ad-free experience to their users. For example, we can show YouTube and its Premium subscription as the most suitable platform for this tariff.

Of course, this is a comprehensive speculation, but WhatsApp also has the potential to announce a similar paid subscription. Users will choose between an ad-supported and Premium package. The company will both earn money from each user and have a justification for direct charging. Only time will tell if this scenario will actually happen.

WhatsApp is a free to use instant messaging service used by billions of users worldwide. However, it did not start as free since initially, the app had a subscription fee, which was later reduced to $1/year with a free trial for a year. But that begun to change as the company started to cancel subscriptions for random regular users. And at last, it became fully free for all the existing as well as new users in early 2016

Between all this, Facebook bought WhatsApp in 2014 for $16 billion. Since then, there have been speculations on how the social giant will monetise the newly acquired platform. It became even more intense when the app went completely free.

Then, a report emerged in late 2018 regarding Facebook to bring ads in the then newly introduced status section in WhatsApp. Followed by that, another report in 2019 suggested ads will come to WhatsApp only after the unification of Facebook’s all messaging platforms including Instagram and Messenger.

But that may not happen anytime soon as the US FTC (Federal Trade Commission) is investigating an antitrust probe into Facebook. So only after passing that hurdle, ads on WhatsApp may become a reality. Until then, the most used instant messaging platform on the planet will remain ad-free.

This arrives after the application had been free to download but with plans to monetize it in the future, i.e with ads.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular applications that are currently in circulation across the globe. Initially, the online messenger followed a paid entry system for its services which later turned into a yearly subscription based package. However, the entire idea of paying for the service changed when Facebook acquired it back in 2014. Soon after this, the app reached an impressive milestone and crossed the 1 billion download milestone.

But, despite its large userbase and downloads, WhatsApp was apparently not generating any revenue for the parent company. Thus, in 2018, WhatsApp Vice President, Chris Daniels, unveiled the plans from Facebook to sell ads on WhatsApp stories. It was a move to monetize the service which is identical to the ads that are currently seen on Facebook and its other subsidiary, Instagram. Notably, the founders of WhatsApp (such as Brian Acton) were strictly against this method of monetization and even went on to resign from the company.

Arriving at the present, a report has suggested that Facebook appears to be going back on its plans of selling ads on WhatsApp. Sources close to the social media giant have stated that Facebook just disbanded a team that was going to work on optimizing methods of integrating ads on WhatsApp. Furthermore, the work the team had done so far was also deleted from WhatsApp’s codings, according to the source.

Facebook still has plans on introducing ads on the messaging platform sometime in the future, but it is currently prioritizing the generation of revenue from businesses, not customers. The company will do this by allowing firms to reach out to potential customers on WhatsApp. The messaging service has even provided tools that allow businesses to automatically respond to customers and service related queries.

Since then, there has been anxiety as to the measures the social media giant hopes to implement in order to monetize the app. Facebook had earlier assured that we won’t be paying to use the app anytime soon. However, WhatsApp users may soon start getting ads served in-app.

Facebook is a profit-driven organization and as such, it was inevitable that we’ll start seeing some type of advertisements inside WhatsApp since the day it purchased the text-messaging app. The social media giant had previously confirmed plans for monetization and has now announced that WhatsApp ads will start rolling out in 2020. The ads will be served on WhatsApp for Android and iOS.

The first set of ads will be featured on the Whatsapp status stories like regular posts. The ads will occupy the entire screen, but rather than displaying the contact’s name WhatsApp will showcase the name of the company. Also, a swipe-up link will be included. It’s unclear presently if Facebook has any further designs for ads inside WhatsApp. Eventually, the company could introduce smaller alternatives that display between chats on the conversations list.

Facebook also rolled out new ads for WhatsApp Business which would see ads linked to the accounts find their way over to both Facebook and Instagram.
