Some Windows 11 users are reporting unexpected problems after installing Microsoft’s latest security update. The complaints started appearing only a day or two after the patch rolled out, with several people describing system crashes, freezes, and other stability issues.

The update in question is KB5079473, the March 2026 cumulative update released on March 10 for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. It moves systems to builds 26100.8037 and 26200.8037. On paper, the update mainly focuses on security fixes, along with a handful of smaller improvements. Microsoft says it includes updates to Secure Boot certificate handling, improvements to File Explorer search reliability, and changes related to WDAC COM allowlisting.

But shortly after the update began rolling out, reports started appearing in Microsoft Q&A threads. Some users claim their systems became unstable after installing the patch.

One person wrote that their computer crashed completely three times after the update, forcing them to perform hard reboots and losing unsaved work in the process. Others describe the screen freezing entirely, leaving a restart as the only option. A few users even say their PCs began restarting every 10 to 20 minutes.

“ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY (0xBE).” Beyond that, some users mention apps refusing to launch — including Office and Outlook — while tools like Command Prompt or the Print Screen shortcut stopped responding altogether. One error code mentioned in these reports is 0x800704b3.

In a few cases, users claim their drives became inaccessible on certain Samsung Galaxy Book laptops, while others point to graphical glitches or GPU-accelerated apps crashing on Dell Precision systems. These examples are anecdotal for now, but they do suggest the update may be triggering compatibility issues on some hardware.

For users running into trouble, the usual advice applies: pause updates for the moment, or uninstall the patch through Windows Update settings if possible. Submitting a report through the Feedback Hub can also help Microsoft track down the cause if a wider problem is developing.

The “pure OS” likely means a cleaner installation of Windows 11. In consumer laptops, Windows often ships with extra apps, trial software, or manufacturer utilities. For large organizations, that can be a headache. IT departments typically prefer a streamlined system image that’s easier to deploy and manage across hundreds — or thousands — of devices.

A stripped-down Windows build would save time. There’s less need to remove unwanted apps, fewer background services to monitor, and potentially fewer variables when troubleshooting. For companies standardizing their fleets, simplicity matters more than flashy features.

Before the update, AppXSVC was set to run in “Manual” mode, meaning it only started when needed. The December update switched it to “Automatic” startup, causing it to launch during boot and remain active, or repeatedly restart in the background.

For some users, that change has translated into noticeably higher CPU, memory, and disk usage. Reports of AppXSVC-related performance issues are not new, dating back several years, but some users say the December update has made the problem more noticeable. Reports have also flagged the update as potentially worsening performance on lower-end systems.

The situation has been particularly frustrating for IT teams. In managed environments, AppXSVC’s new start-stop behavior can trigger monitoring tools like Zabbix to log repeated crash alerts. One IT professional, Thomas J., said the alerts quickly became overwhelming, forcing administrators to manually suppress them.

Microsoft later acknowledged the change in a support document, saying the switch to Automatic startup was intended to improve reliability “in certain isolated scenarios.” The company also warned that disabling the service could break Microsoft Store app updates.

For now, users are left weighing stability improvements against real-world performance hits. Some are experimenting with service or registry changes to restore the old behavior, though doing so comes with trade-offs Microsoft itself advises against.

The update, released on December 9, has been failing to install on many Dell desktops and laptops. Users report that the progress bar halts mid-way and returns error code 0x800f0983. A system administrator confirmed that a large number of new Dell systems under his management encountered the same issue. He attempted multiple troubleshooting methods, including System File Checker, Deployment Image Servicing and Management, and reinstalling Windows. None of these fixed the problem.

The situation is worse on Dell Pro Max 16250 devices. Several users reported that these systems freeze after installing the update. Initial speculation pointed to Intel Arc graphics drivers. Further investigation by users revealed that a BIOS setting caused the issue. They found that disabling the “Enable adaptive c-States for discrete graphics” option under Advanced Setup > Performance in the BIOS stopped the system crashes.

Another reported issue affects the Start Menu. On some systems running Windows 11 24H2, the Start Menu fails to open after installing KB5072033. One affected user suspects that the problem may be connected to a previously identified bug from update KB5072911, which affected File Explorer and other XAML-based apps on enterprise devices.

Microsoft has not released an official fix or statement addressing these problems. For now, Dell users are advised to delay the KB5072033 update or manually adjust BIOS settings if they face system freezes. The update continues to raise concerns across Windows forums, especially among enterprise administrators managing large fleets of Dell hardware.

Once logged in, users may see RAM usage rise above 1GB and potentially climb higher when handling multiple active chats.

The report adds that performance has taken a noticeable hit. Navigating conversations appears slower, and animations and transitions feel less responsive. The new app also struggles with Windows 11-specific behaviours, including notification handling and Do Not Disturb mode. These issues, combined with heavier system resource demands, make the updated client feel less integrated with the operating system.

According to the report, this change is likely connected to internal restructuring at Meta, which may have resulted in the native app team being downsized. By maintaining a single web-based codebase, Meta reduces development overhead, but the user-facing impact is substantial.

The new build is rolling out as version 2.2584.3.0 through the Microsoft Store. Those who still have the previous native client installed may temporarily avoid upgrading, though the report claims that all users will eventually be logged out and required to move to the new version.

This issue prevents navigation of any of the recovery options within WinRE,” the company clarified in a blog post.

Microsoft has since released a fix: KB5070773, an “out-of-band” update now available via Windows Update and the Microsoft Update Catalog. It restores USB functionality in WinRE for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and Windows Server 2025.

It is Huawei’s boldest attempt yet to establish a fully self-reliant computing ecosystem, complete with its own kernel, AI assistant, security architecture, and app framework. But how does it actually compare to Microsoft’s Windows, the long-dominant force in global PC operating systems?

What is HarmonyOS PC?

HarmonyOS PC is a fully domestic, full-stack operating system designed by Huawei, built on HarmonyOS 5. It is part of the broader HarmonyOS ecosystem that already spans smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, TVs, and even vehicle dashboards. The PC version extends HarmonyOS’s core values, fluid performance, multi-device integration, AI enhancement, and security into the desktop computing space.

At the heart of the system lies a redesigned Harmony kernel, supported by the Ark graphics engine, StarShield security architecture, and Huawei’s proprietary development tools such as ArkTS and ArkUI. HarmonyOS PC is built for seamless interaction across devices, allowing users to share keyboards, mice, screens, and files between phones, tablets, and PCs without friction.

The OS also integrates tightly with Huawei’s AI assistant, Xiaoyi, which supports voice interaction, smart summarization, translation, and contextual data search through AI-driven semantic understanding.

HarmonyOS PC leans heavily on distributed computing. With Huawei’s distributed soft bus technology, it enables seamless cross-device continuity such as dragging files between devices, using the same keyboard/mouse across multiple screens, and real-time app handoff.

Windows has made strides in this area through services like Phone Link and OneDrive, but it still depends on third-party hardware and applications for advanced integrations.

Visually, HarmonyOS PC resembles macOS more than Windows. It features a bottom-center dock for apps, top status bars, and a clean, card-based desktop layout.

Dynamic wallpapers, motion effects, gravity-based visuals, and layered window transitions give it a polished, modern aesthetic. Windows remains more traditional in layout, though Windows 11 has adopted some visual cues similar to macOS as well.

Gesture control on HarmonyOS PC is also more intuitive, supporting three-finger swipes, drag-and-drop multitasking, and screen splitting at the system level. These UI elements are designed with AI in mind and are tightly woven into the system’s operation.

4. AI Integration

This is where HarmonyOS PC aims to leap ahead. Huawei’s Xiaoyi assistant, powered by its Pangu and DeepSeek models, can generate templates, translate images, summarize meetings in real-time, and offer system-level automation.

Windows has Copilot and Microsoft 365 integrations, but Huawei’s Xiaoyi is more deeply embedded into the OS and can access system-level commands and UI elements through voice, image, or text.

Huawei built HarmonyOS PC with privacy as a foundational feature. The StarShield architecture enforces full-disk encryption at the chip level, meaning even if the drive is removed, data remains unreadable. Additional features include one-time permission grants, anti-peeping screens, and remote device wiping, even when the device is powered off.

Windows offers BitLocker and a range of user-configurable privacy tools, but it does not provide chip-level full-disk encryption by default on all devices and is more reliant on third-party antivirus and security software.

Final Thoughts

HarmonyOS PC represents a clear turning point in Huawei’s long-term vision to decouple from Western tech infrastructure. This change, made after the release of Windows 11 version 24H2, eliminates the workaround from its support documentation, signaling the company’s shift away from accommodating unsupported devices.

When Windows 11 debuted in October 2021, it faced significant criticism over its strict hardware requirements, particularly the need for modern CPUs and TPM 2.0 support. 

To address user concerns, Microsoft published a workaround allowing users to bypass these checks by tweaking a Registry key. This allowed unsupported PCs to upgrade to Windows 11, albeit with a disclaimer warning of potential system instability and the risk of serious errors.

The now-deleted workaround involved creating a specific Registry key:

• Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup
• Name: AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU
• Type: REG_DWORD
• Value: 1

Microsoft explicitly warned users of the risks associated with modifying the Registry, noting that it could lead to issues requiring a system reinstall. However, the company no longer officially endorses this bypass method, even though the workaround itself may still function.

The official workaround now is to buy new hardware

Instead, Microsoft’s current recommendation is for users to upgrade to newer hardware that meets Windows 11’s system requirements. The move comes after repeated clarifications from Microsoft that it was not relaxing the hardware eligibility criteria for Windows 11.

The company has consistently emphasized the importance of these requirements for performance, security, and reliability.  Partners like Dell and AMD have also likely aligned with this position.

While the registry trick may still work in some cases, Microsoft has made it clear that it no longer guarantees a smooth experience on unsupported devices. With this change, the company is doubling down on its recommendation to opt for newer hardware, aligning with its long-term strategy for Windows 11.

Windows 11 24H2 update is here and it’s coming to your machine whether you like it or not, well, almost. Microsoft has shifted gears on its update policy for Windows 11 24H2, the latest iteration of its desktop operating system. 

Since October 2024, it’s been available as an optional upgrade, but starting January 16, 2025, things are changing. Microsoft has begun automatically downloading and installing Windows 11 24H2 on compatible Windows 11 PCs.

This forceful update is limited to consumer PCs running Windows 11 Home and Pro versions. So if you’re on an enterprise edition, you can breathe a sigh of relief for now. 

Microsoft is also taking a staged approach, so not everyone will see the update notification right away. They’ll gradually push the update to a subset of users, monitor for bugs and issues, and then expand the rollout further.

The reasoning behind this seems to be to ensure a smoother update experience. By taking a measured approach, Microsoft can identify and squash any major problems that might arise before a wider release. This staged rollout also gives them a chance to gather feedback from early adopters and address any compatibility concerns.

If you’re not one for waiting, you can always check for updates manually. Just head over to Settings > Windows Update and select “Check for updates”. If your device is compatible and Microsoft has flipped the switch for your account, you’ll see the option to download and install version 24H2.

There have been some reports of glitches with Windows 11 24H2, particularly related to games, but Microsoft assures us that most of these have been resolved with recent patches. 

That said, the potential for new, unforeseen issues always exists with major updates. If you’re particularly risk-averse, you can use the “Pause Updates” feature in Windows Update to defer the update for up to five weeks. Microsoft is advancing its integration of Windows and Android devices with a new feature in testing for Windows Insiders. It allows users to directly access their Android phone’s storage through the familiar File Explorer interface on Windows 11, offering a more seamless way to manage files.

Microsoft recently debuted its new Copilot+ PCs with a cool new feature called Windows Recall. While Microsoft intends it to be exclusive to these machines due to specific hardware requirements, resourceful folks online have already found workarounds to make it work on older machines. 

Albacore, a user known as @thebookisclosed on X, has managed to jury-rig Recall onto a non-Copilot+ device with very sub-par specifications. The device in question is a Samsung Galaxy Book Go 2 with an ARM-based Snapdragon 7c+ Gen 3 processor and a meager 3.4GB of RAM. 

This feat is particularly impressive since the Snapdragon 7cx on the Go 2 doesn’t have a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) or 16GB of RAM that Microsoft specifies as the minimum requirements for Recall. Despite these limitations, Albacore says the feature works “surprisingly good.”

Albacore has even promised to share a detailed guide for Surface Pro X owners and others on the Windows on ARM platform so that they can get their hands on Windows Recall. 

The x86 crowd might have to wait a bit longer to get a taste of Recall since the developer ML models are primarily ARM64 packages at this point. But eventually, the x86 PC might be able to join the Recall party too.

The concept of Recall is interesting as well as worrying. Microsoft has made it clear that all the processing and data stays on-device, but to think that your OS is constantly recording your move is a bit unsettling for me. 

Thankfully, Microsoft does offer options for users like me who can either opt out of snapshots or disable the feature altogether.

Recall officially arrives with the Windows 11 version 24H2 which is currently in the public Release Preview Channel, one step away from mainstream availability.

The wait is over for Windows 11 users! After months in beta, The Browser Company has finally launched the official version of Arc browser 1.0.1. Users can now download and use Arc directly without needing to join a waiting list.

Windows 10 users may have to wait longer for their turn to try the browser out.

However, there’s a catch: Arc currently only supports Windows 11. Those on Windows 10 will need to wait a bit longer for their turn. There’s also good news for users with ARM-based Windows machines, as a native ARM64 version of Arc is planned for a future release. Interestingly, the Windows version of Arc leverages Apple’s Swift programming language, similar to the macOS version. This allows the browser to share some core code with its Mac counterpart.

Arc has a unique interface with a sidebar that houses features like tabs, library, easels & notes, spaces, boosts, and archived tabs. It also has some innovative features like the ability to rename tabs, peek into links before opening them, and take notes within the browser.

However, Arc also has some hard edges. It has a steep learning curve due to its new design and reliance on keyboard shortcuts. Overall, it is a promising new browser with some innovative features, but some may argue that it is not ready for mass adoption yet. Well, with a whole new user base, we’ll find out soon what people think about the Browser.

Microsoft recently rolled out a fresh update (KB5037000) for Windows 11 Insiders in the Beta Channel. Alongside introducing new interactive elements for Windows Spotlight, the update also comes with a not-so-welcome tweak: more app recommendations (that essentially are ads) in the Start menu.

These recommendations pop up in the Start menu’s “Recommended” section and will show apps from the Microsoft Store based on your recent app usage. This means you might encounter app suggestions that don’t quite match your interests.

Currently, the Start menu organizes apps into “Pinned” and “Recommendations” sections. The latter usually includes recently used files or apps, newly installed applications, and even tips for utilizing new Windows features.

Now, with the latest update, recommendations from the Microsoft Store have been added, giving off an ad-like vibe.

While these recommended apps might not directly come from app developers paying for placement, Microsoft does earn revenue from apps distributed through its store. Thus, from a user’s perspective, it can still feel like advertising.

There is some good news, however. You can disable the feature entirely. Simply head to Settings > Personalization > Start and turn off the toggle for “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more.”

Additionally, this change currently only affects Insiders in the Beta Channel and on personal devices, meaning work computers (often managed by organizations) are not impacted for now.

Most importantly, Microsoft hasn’t confirmed if this feature will make it to the final release of Windows 11. The company is using the Insider program to gather feedback, and based on user response, they may decide to scrap the idea altogether.

In a surprising move, Microsoft has announced that it will stop supporting Android apps in Windows 11 starting March 5th, 2025. Specifically, support for Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) is going away which has been pivotal for running Android apps on Windows 11.

Initially introduced in 2021, WSA allowed users to easily load Android apps or get them from the Amazon App Store. The feature gained popularity swiftly, but its future now seems uncertain.

Microsoft’s decision to discontinue WSA support came to light through an update in developer documentation. The change unsurprisingly affects the Amazon Appstore on Windows as well as any applications or games dependent on WSA.

Microsoft’s announcement to end Android support means starting from March 5th, 2024, users won’t be able to install new Android apps via the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11. 

However, those who already have apps installed can continue using them until March 5th, 2025, with updates also available until then. What will happen after that date is unclear as of now. The apps might stop working altogether or might just lose official support.

Amazon has also confirmed the end of support stating that developers won’t be able to submit new apps targeted for Windows 11 after March 5th, 2024. Developers with existing apps can submit updates until the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11 shuts down.

Microsoft’s decision leaves the fate of Android apps on Windows 11 uncertain. While the company hasn’t provided official reasons for ending WSA support, it could be due to the low adoption of the service or may be due to technical challenges.

For users interested in running Android apps on Windows, you might want to get back to the basics now. That is, using third-party Android emulators.

Microsoft may soon prevent the next major Windows 11 update (known as 24H2) from running on very old computers. This change is due to a newly discovered requirement for the POPCNT instruction, which many older CPUs do not support.

POPCNT is a CPU instruction used to count the number of set bits in a value. It has applications in cryptography and has been present in CPUs for decades.

Intel introduced POPCNT with its Nehalem architecture in 2008 and AMD with its Barcelona architecture in 2007. If your computer uses a CPU manufactured before those dates, there’s a possibility that it may no longer be compatible with future Windows 11 updates.

Since Microsoft already restricts Windows 11 installation to relatively modern processors (8th generation Intel chips or newer), this potential change won’t impact most users.

However, those who have bypassed Windows 11 hardware restrictions on older systems could run into problems during the next major update.

It’s unclear if this change is intentional or an accidental result of including newer CPU instructions during the development process.

A similar incident occurred recently in Windows 10, leading to compatibility problems for some older processors.

Microsoft has not yet officially commented on this situation. This development underscores Microsoft’s increasing focus on stricter hardware requirements for its operating systems.

Users with significantly older computers may want to consider the upcoming limitations if they plan to continue using Windows 11 long-term.

However, as mentioned earlier, Microsoft has restricted Windows 11 installation to compatible devices since its launch. So, if you’ve checked the compatibility list, there’s no need to worry; your device will continue to work normally.

Previous speculation about Microsoft moving away from a three-year update cycle for Windows turned out to be true. In an official blog post, Microsoft announced that “Windows 11 24H2” will be the major feature update for 2024, pushing the anticipated release of Windows 12 into 2025 or later.

Microsoft subtly revealed this strategy shift in the changelog for a recent Windows 11 Insider Preview Build. The changelog states:

The company is now clearly committed to one annual feature update for Windows 11, scheduled for release in the second half of each year. This marks a change from smaller, more frequent “Moments” updates seen in the past.

This decision may stem from Microsoft’s concern about exacerbating userbase fragmentation. Windows 10 continues to hold a dominant 66% market share, while Windows 11 trails behind at 28%. Introducing Windows 12 in 2024 could further divide the Windows ecosystem, a situation Microsoft likely wants to avoid.

Instead, users can expect substantial AI-powered features and other advancements with the Windows 11 24H2 update. The exact details of what these AI features will be are still up in the air, but we can expect more details to come out in the coming months. 

However, previously rumored concepts, like a redesigned desktop interface with a “floating taskbar”  as a characteristic of Windows 12 won’t materialize in the immediate future. So a significant visual overhaul for Windows is unlikely before 2025.

Regarding release timing, Windows 11 24H2  builds will reach manufacturers (RTM) in April 2024. General public availability is tentatively expected sometime between September and October 2024.

Earlier this month, Microsoft declared that Windows Speech Recognition will no longer be supported, making voice access an increasingly crucial capability.

It is past due that Microsoft discontinued Windows Speech Recognition, a feature that was initially introduced with Windows Vista. Much more powerful, voice access is updated frequently with new capabilities.

3. Windows 365 Boot New Features and Improvements

Dedicated mode for Windows 365 Boot: Windows is now introducing dedicated mode, a new option for Windows 365 Boot.

You may now use your assigned company-owned device to boot up to your Windows 365 Cloud PC. With password-less authentication techniques like Windows Hello for Business, you may easily log in to your Windows 365 Cloud PC from the Windows 11 login screen.

The new dedicated mode also includes features like remembering your username, displaying a photo on the lock and login screens, and a quick account switcher experience that lets you swap accounts to log in with ease.

Early in 2024, a private preview of the functionality will be made available to Windows 365 users.

Customized company logo and name for Windows 365 Boot: Organizations may now personalize the login page in shared mode to include their Intune business logo. Early in 2024, Windows 365 users will be able to access the functionality in a private preview.

Fail fast mechanism for Windows 365 Boot: You no longer have to wait for the Cloud PC sign-in procedure to finish before discovering that Windows 365 Boot failed because of a network problem or an unfinished setup.

To ensure a seamless login experience for users to their Cloud PC, the intelligent logic alerts users in advance to fix network problems or finish app setup.

Manage local PC settings through Windows 365 Boot: You may now more easily view and control the sound, display, and other device-specific settings of your local PC from your cloud PC when using Windows 365 Boot.

4. Windows 365 Switch New features and enhancements

Improved disconnect experience for Windows 365 Switch: You may disconnect straight from your local PC to their Cloud PC.

To disconnect, navigate to Local PC > Task view > Right-click the Cloud PC button. To help you distinguish between these features, they have also included tooltips for the Cloud PC Start menu’s disconnect and sign-out choices.

Desktop indicators to differentiate between Cloud PC and local PC for Windows 365 Switch: Now, when you move between your own PCs, the terms “Cloud PC” and “Local PC” will appear on the desktop indication.

Windows 365 Switch to Frontline Cloud PC: While you wait on the connection page, you will now get updates on the Cloud PC connection status and the connection timeout indicator.

If there is a mistake, you can now quickly fix it by copying the correlation ID from the error screen by utilizing the newly included copy button.

5. General

• Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) replaced with voice access: WSR is no longer supported. When you launch WSR, a dialog box will appear encouraging you to test voice access.

Additionally, we’ve put a banner under Settings > Accessibility > Speech. With Windows 11, we’ve added voice access—a new assistive technology that employs on-device speech recognition to let you create text and manage your computer—without requiring an internet connection.

In a later version, it will allow various languages and custom commands (as previously mentioned, Windows Insiders may now test these capabilities in the Beta Channel). Windows advises WSR users to give voice access a try right now.

• Nearby Sharing: Added nearby sharing, navigate under Settings > System > Nearby sharing. This feature allows you to rapidly give your device a more amiable name to distinguish sharing to and from.

• Narrator: Narrator users may now dictate text, utilize voice interaction with screen components, and utilize voice access to launch programs. Users of Narrator can provide voice instructions to Narrator by utilizing voice access.

Take “read next line,” “speak faster,” etc. as examples. Start by typing “voice access” into Windows search and configuring it.

• Task Manager: You will now be able to choose the dump file location when generating one for a process, allowing you to transfer it out.
• Desktops: A bug where the backdrop would bounce when a user switched between desktops was fixed with a few changes.

6. Notepad Update

Windows is now distributing a Notepad update (version 11.2311.33.0) via the Beta Channel to Windows Insiders, bringing with it the following enhancements:

• Edit with Notepad: You may quickly open Notepad from File Explorer and make changes to files. To open and edit files in Notepad quickly and efficiently, simply right-click on any file or many files in File Explorer to bring up the [Edit with Notepad] option in the context menu.

• Character Count: The new character count display in the status bar allows you to keep track of how long your document is. When a text selection is made, the character count for the selected text and the full document are displayed in the status bar. You can always clearly see how long your document is if you know how many characters it is without having to choose any content.

Note: Through an enablement package, every Windows Insider in the Beta Channel will now be running the same build, 22635.xxxx.

If you’re a Windows Insider in the Beta Channel and would want to be the first to receive features gradually, you can switch on the option to receive the most recent updates as soon as they become available by going to Settings > Windows Update.

Notepad, the ubiquitous text editor on Windows devices, has finally received a much-needed update: a character count feature. This feature, while seemingly basic, has been absent from the app since its inception.

Notepad gets a character count feature

The new feature arrives in the latest Canary channel test build of Windows 11. It adds a character count display to the bottom left corner of the Notepad window. This mimics the behavior of other text editors like Microsoft Word, offering a convenient way to track the length of your text. 

By default, it displays the total number of characters in the entire document. But if you select a specific line, the application will show the character count for that section. I’m sure the character count feature on Windows Notepad will come in handy for all who work with any text-based content. 

The character count feature is one of several improvements Microsoft has made to Notepad this year. Recently, they added an autosave option that automatically saves your work at regular intervals, eliminating the worry of losing progress. 

Additionally, they’ve added tabs for managing multiple documents and a dark mode for comfortable nighttime use. And if you need to fidget, there’s even a virtual fidget spinner now. These changes make Notepad a more user-friendly experience overall.

Apart from this, Windows 11 itself has received some updates in the latest Canary channel build. Users can now choose to display only widgets on the dedicated Widget page, hiding the feed of news and articles if they so desire. This feature wasn’t really clicking with me either, so I’m glad Microsoft is offering more options.

However, it’s important to remember that all these features are currently in beta testing and should be available to all users in future updates.

Microsoft’s New Windows App Unveiled

Microsoft has developed a new Windows app for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Windows, and web browsers. This app essentially replaces the previous Windows 365 and serves as a central hub used to view Windows from a remote computer. However, the preview version is currently not available on Android.

As a result, users can access, control, and use their remote devices even when they are not constantly at their computers. Establishing communication between Windows and iPhone has, until now, been quite a literal pain. However, this has somewhat reduced the access issue between the two devices. At least now, you don’t have to go through the hassle of trying to access photos and files on your computer.

At the moment, it seems the app is limited to Microsoft’s business accounts, but there are hints that it will eventually be available for consumers. The app comes with a range of features, including multi-monitor support, custom screen resolutions, dynamic screen resolutions and scaling, and support for devices like webcams, audio, storage devices, and printers redirection.

Microsoft has had remote connection applications for computers for many years, but the introduction of a dedicated “Windows App” is a unique development, possibly signaling that Microsoft’s broader goal of transitioning Windows entirely to the cloud is still in progress.

Microsoft recently announced the discontinuation of three older services in Windows as part of its long-term strategy to enhance the operating system. This decision aligns with the company’s commitment to removing outdated features and services that no longer align with their vision while consistently introducing new enhancements. Microsoft Phasing Out Outdated Features for Improved Windows

The three services being removed are Computer Browser, Web Client (WebDAV), and Remote Mailslot, as outlined in an online document tracking deprecated Windows features. This information was shared by @XenoPanther on Twitter. Although each of these services once served specific functions, they have become outdated and present security risks.

The Computer Browser service, including its associated driver and device location protocol, is considered insecure. Initially disabled by default with the removal of Server Message Block version 1 (SMB1) in Windows 10, this move aimed to bolster security within the operating system.

The WebDAV API, an HTTP extension introduced with Windows Vista, is no longer started by default in current Windows versions, reflecting a shift away from its use due to the emergence of newer technologies.

Lastly, Remote Mailslots, an Inter-Process Communication (IPC) protocol introduced with MS-DOS, is considered severely outdated and insecure. A high-ranking Microsoft executive earlier this year described this protocol as “disgusting” and emphasized the urgent need for its removal. While these features are marked for discontinuation, it’s important to note that they haven’t been completely removed yet. They will persist in Windows for now, but Microsoft will not invest in these services or actively update them.

The gradual phasing out of these old services is anticipated in a future version of Windows, although Microsoft has not provided a specific timeline for this transition at the moment.

Google has also partnered with a number of major game publishers to bring their games to the service, including Activision Blizzard, EA, and Konami. (Some of them will be added in the coming weeks.)

To play Android games on Windows, users will need to download and install the Play Games PC app. Once installed, users can sign in with their Google account and browse the library of available games. Games can be downloaded and installed directly from the app, and users can also sync their progress between their Android devices and Windows PCs.

Microsoft has ended the free upgrade path from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10/11, though upgrading from 10 to 11 remains free. This means people with older systems will now have to pay if they want to upgrade.

End of Free Upgrades: Microsoft Closes Upgrade Path from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10/11

Previously, some users tried to get permanent activation during the upgrade, but tools like HWIDGEN and MAS for activating systems will no longer work, as Microsoft has blocked such requests from their servers. However, computers already using Windows 10/11 through these activations will stay active; Microsoft is not taking back those licenses.

For now, Windows 11 version 22H2 can still be activated on virtual machines, but the newer Canary build is not accepting activation requests.

Microsoft is also working on a lighter, web-focused Windows 12 aiming for the education market, trying to rival Chrome OS. It’s supposed to be a simpler version of Windows, and it’s expected to come out in 2024. This variant won’t replace standard Windows but will be an alternative for simpler, educational devices. It will feature AI integration and focus heavily on web experiences, especially with Microsoft Edge.

In addition, Microsoft has introduced a big update for Windows 11, adding Copilot, a new AI assistant. Copilot will be in a sidebar and can help users with various tasks like searching for recipes and planning trips. The update also gives File Explorer a new look, adds a handwriting feature called Ink Anywhere, and brings enhancements to the Snipping tool and RGB lighting control. Plus, Microsoft 365 users can get Copilot for $30 a month, which will help them with their work tasks.

During a special event, Microsoft announced that it will release a major update to Windows 11 on September 26th, packed with new features. The star of the show is the AI-powered Copilot feature, which is making its way into Windows OS with the update.

Copilot is an AI-powered assistant that will be deeply integrated into the Windows OS. So you can use it for a variety of tasks, including finding recipes, planning trips, solving math equations, and even pulling information from your phone.

You can also use it to write text messages using data from your calendar or navigation options in Outlook. The possibilities are just endless!  Copilot will appear as a sidebar in Windows 11, and you can interact with it just like Bing Chat.

File Explorer is also getting a more modern and user-friendly interface in the upcoming Windows 11 update. The new interface includes a large home screen with file thumbnails and a carousel interface that surfaces recent and favorited files. The new interface also includes a number of other improvements, such as a new dark mode and the ability to pin files and folders to the sidebar.

Stylus users are getting a key new feature called Ink Anywhere in the upcoming Windows 11 update. Ink Anywhere allows you to handwrite with a stylus in any text box anywhere in Windows. The OS will convert your writing to text and use it where applicable. This is a great feature for students and professionals who need to take notes or write reports.

The upcoming Windows 11 update also includes a number of other new features, such as RGB lighting control, new features for the Snipping tool, and other improvements. In total, Microsoft notes that Windows is getting over 150 new features in the update. You can learn about them here.

It is important to understand that each version of Windows 11 (21H2 and 22H2) has its own specific list of supported processors. The recent change log from Microsoft applies to the Windows 11 22H2 version.

On the other hand, the new list of supported processors includes a few new Ryzen models, even the unannounced Ryzen 3 5380! This processor is rumored to be one of the SKUs from AMD’s “Lucienne” lineup, which is based on the Zen 2 CPU and Vega GPU microarchitectures.

Today, Microsoft announced the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Builds 22621.2129 and 22631.2129 to the Beta Channel, launching a series of exciting new features to improve the user experience. Among the newly introduced elements is the Windows Copilot Preview, an AI-powered tool initially introduced during the Build conference back in May. Accessible to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel via a controlled feature rollout, the Windows Copilot delivers an integrated UI experience. It interacts seamlessly with your desktop content, facilitating a wide range of requests, from toggling ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode to summarizing website content.

However, the latest updates are not solely targeted at AI enhancements. Developers are set to benefit from Dev Drive, a new storage volume designed to boost performance for key developer workloads. Moreover, Performance mode, a new feature of Microsoft Defender Antivirus, has been introduced specifically for Dev Drive to minimize impact on developer workloads.

Additional updates include Narrator enhancements to optimize user interaction with Excel, providing a more efficient reading experience. Users also gain a more streamlined text authoring experience through voice access, with new “correction” and “spell that” commands to improve text dictation accuracy. Furthermore, voice access now operates in more areas in Windows, allowing users to log in to their PC and access other areas on the Lock screen using their voice.

The latest Windows 11 Beta wants to help you tackle this. Microsoft is rolling out two new builds for Windows Insiders enrolled users in the Beta Channel. One of these builds, labeled 22631.1900, tests ways to minimize bothersome notifications from apps.

Windows 11 Beta also boosts your Wi-Fi

According to the official blog post, Microsoft is rolling out two beta builds— build 22631.1900 with new features rolling out and build 22621.1900 with new features off by default. The company notes that Insiders who got the build with new features turned off by default can check for updates and choose to install the update that will have features rolling out.

The changelog of build 22631.1900 mentions that Windows is getting its notifications improved. It tests a new feature that minimizes distractions from notification toasts (small pop-up notifications that appear at the top of your screen). If you are not interacting with toasts from a particular app, the system will suggest that you turn off the toast banners for that app. This will stop the banners from appearing, but you will still be able to find the toasts in the notification center.

This feature has just started rolling out, so not all Insiders in the Beta Channel will see it right away. In addition, the build also boosts Wi-Fi by enhancing connection performance. Passpoint Wi-Fi networks will now support this improvement, and these types of networks will display a URL in Quick Settings to provide users with information about the venue or event.

Windows 11 possesses a plethora of user-friendly features. However, one of them wasn’t viewing saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords. Fortunately, this situation is changing. Microsoft has launched a new Insider Preview Build of Windows 11, which introduces a feature enabling users to view all their saved Wi-Fi passwords.

Previously, users had to use a third-party tool or dig through the registry to find their Wi-Fi passwords. With this new feature, it is now much easier to find your Wi-Fi passwords if you need to share them with someone or if you forget them. Soon, users will be able to view their Wi-Fi passwords by following very simple steps.

To view your saved Wi-Fi passwords, open the Settings app and go to Network & Internet > Wi-Fi. Under the Manage known networks section, you will see a list of all the Wi-Fi networks that your computer has connected to in the past. To view the password for a network, select it and then click the View Wi-Fi security key button. The password will be displayed in plain text.
