Xiaomi 12, 12 Pro & 12X launched for the global market: prices & availability

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, today, held a global launch event where it took the wraps off the much-anticipated Xiaomi 12 series alongside the Xiaomi Watch S1, Watch S1 Active, and the Xiaomi Buds 3T Pro. The Xiaomi 12 series is made up of the vanilla Xiaomi 12, the Xiaomi 12 Pro, and a cheaper Xiaomi 12X.

The Xiaomi 12 models will be available immediately to buy in Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. The global reach may get expanded to other markets outside these regions in due course.

While we are familiar with the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro which first launched in China in December, the Xiaomi 12X is an entirely new entrant. The 12X features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 mid-range chip as opposed to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC on the flagship models. As a result of the mid-range chipset onboard, the model is available at a slightly reduced price tag.

Speaking of the prices, the top-of-the-line model, Xiaomi 12 Pro starts a $1,000/€1,000 for the 8GB of RAM + 256GB storage variant. There is also a 12GB RAM version bundled with 256GB storage. On the other hand, the vanilla 12 is priced at $750 (€800) for the 8GB+128GB model. The price is €50 higher than that of the Xiaomi 11 which isn’t bad. The Xiaomi 12 also comes in 8GB+256GB and 12GB+256GB options.

On its part, the Xiaomi 12X has a starting price tag of $650 (€700) for the base variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. There is a higher variant with 256GB storage.

The Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro, and Xiaomi 12X are all available in three color options; Gray, Purple, and Blue. The3 Chinese version got a fourth green leatherette color option but that is missing on the global version. Another perk that comes with the Xiaomi 12 series is the free YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium access buyers will get for three months, allowing them to stream video ad-free and download some for offline viewing.

The Xiaomi 12 series is available to buy from any part of the world on AliExpress. The Xiaomi 12 comes with an early bird price tag of $699 which is slightly lower than the official retail price. The Xiaomi 12X also has a decent price cut for the early bird offer. It starts at $449 for the 8GB+128GB version. The top-end Xiaomi 12 Pro retains its $1000 global price tag on AliExpress.

Xiaomi 12 series global launch officially confirmed for March 15

Xiaomi has officially announced that the much-awaited global launch of the Xiaomi 12 series will happen on March 15. The announcement put to rest speculations about the brand’s flagship launch outside China where the Xiaomi 12 series has been launched since last year. The launch event will commence at 8 PM China time (12PM UTC) and will stream live across various platforms including YouTube, Twitter, Facebook as well as Xiaomi’s own website. Although the company did not reveal the models that would be hitting the global turf, we expect the company to release the Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro, and Xiaomi 12X. All three models were launched in China. There is no chance the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will be launched as well. A recent rumor tipped the 12 Ultra to have been delayed and will arrive in Q2 2022.

There is a likelihood that the more compact Xiaomi 12 mini could also join the global Xiaomi 12 series lineup. Other possible models could debut in the global launch, but any projection now will be in the realm of uncertainty.

The camera setup of the Xiaomi 12 series will be a major marketing point for the global edition of the smartphones, as they will come with an excellent rear and front-facing camera setup. It is also indicated that the theme of the March 15 event is Master every scene, which hopes to showcase the impressive camera system of the lineup. All three models in the lineup have a 50MP rear in combination with telephoto and ultra-wide sensors that combine for a great camera system.

All three global models in the Xiaomi 12 series come with Qualcomm Snapdragon chips. While the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, the 12X has the Snapdragon 870.

There is no word yet on the pricing but the Xiaomi 12 series is rumored to start in the EU at €600-700 for the base 12X model while the Xiaomi 12 will reportedly retail for €899. The top-end Xiaomi 12 Pro is said to start at €1,099. If these speculated prices are anything to go by, the Xiaomi 12 series will have some stiff competition to contend with.

Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro appear on Indonesia Telecom Certification hinting at a sooner global launch

Xiaomi recently announced its 2022 flagships, the Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12X, and Xiaomi 12 Pro. However, the series is limited to the Chinese market and rumors revealed that the series may go global in February or March. Now, ahead of any announcements, the series has emerged on the Indonesia Telecom certification portal confirming its sooner global release.

The Xiaomi 12 global models carry the model numbers 2201123G for the Xiaomi 12, and 2201122G for the 12 Pro. The 12X may not land in the global markets, at least as of now. Unfortunately, the certification site doesn’t reveal any specifications of the series.

If we take a look at the phones launched in China, the Xiaomi 12 has a 6.28-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, and the Pro sports a 6.73-inch 2K AMOLED panel. The duo has a triple camera system but the vanilla has a 50MP + 13MP + 5MP setup, while the Pro has a 50MP + 50MP + 50MP array.

Under the hood, the phones are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC paired with up 12GB of RAM and 256GB of in-built storage. The vanilla has a 4,500mAh with support for 67W wired and 50W wireless fast charging support.

On the other hand, the Pro model packs a slightly larger 4,600mAh battery with 120W wired and the same 50W wireless fast charging support. The phones run on Android 11 out of the box with MIUI 13 on the top.

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is known for affordable smartphones but in recent times, the company made a lunge for the premium flagship smartphone market with the Mi 11 and it was a huge success. The company is expected to continue the upgrade in its phone design with the 12 series. Recently, some renders of the protective cases of the Xiaomi 12 series leaked online.

The protective case for the 12 Ultra was recently shared online by Twitter tipster @rodent950 who spotted them on Chinese social media platform Weibo. Graphic designer Technizo Concept has now imagined the Xiaomi 12 Ultra based on the leaked protective cases.

The renders show the premium flagship will have a completely redesigned camera system different from the design style of the Mi 11 series. The Mi 12 Ultra will utilize a round-shaped camera module with a wide radius with a slight rectangular protrusion at the base. The circular module will house a Quad-camera setup comprising of a centrally placed, wide main sensor. There are rumors the Mi 12 Ultra main camera will be a 50-megapixel Samsung ISOCell GN5 image sensor wide-angle camera

We don’t know for sure the configurations of the other three sensors but we expect them to include ultra-wide and periscope sensors. The device is also envisioned to carry a sensor in addition to the four camera lenses but the use is not known. The LetsGoDigital in-house designer also envisions the Mi 12 Ultra to come with a Leica badge meaning Xiaomi could team up with the renowned German camera maker for the Mi 12 Ultra. That is just speculation, though.

The renders also include the front design which is expected to house a 20MP under-display camera.

Xiaomi hasn’t revealed when it will launch the Mi 12 Ultra but as it is in a race to be among the first OEMs to launch a flagship packing the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, we expect the launch to happen pretty soon.

Xiaomi 12 tipped to feature a smaller punch-hole design & high screen-to-body ratio

Xiaomi 12 isn’t expected until next year but thanks to popular Chinese tipstter Digital Chat Station, we are already getting an idea of how the device will look like and its features. The Weibo tipster has now diclosed that the Xiaomi 12 will arrive with a high screen-to-body ratio. The tipster equally hinted that the device will come with a smaller punch-hole design.

Xiaomi has over the years consistently made efforts to reduce the size of the bezels around its smartphone displays. The most successful of such venture has been without doubt on the Mi Mix series. The flagship Mi, now Xiaomi series have also had its own fair share of significant reduction in the sizes of the bezels. Thus, a high screen-to-body ratio can only mean that the company is planning to further trim the bezels around the display to further increase the screen ratio. Perhaps, we’ll see a reduction of the bezels around the chin to match the size of the side bezels.

In addition, the tipster hinted that the flagship device will feature a curved-edge design and a flexible display panel. Digital Chat Station also hinted at a smaller punch-hole compared to those of the Mi 11 series.

Earlier on, the same tipster had disclosed that the Xiaomi 12 will likely feature three 50-megapixels camera sensors at the rear. This sounds ridiculous but you never can tell.

In other aspects, the flagship 12 series is expected to be powered by the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 SoC. The device is also likely to cram a massive 5,000mAh battery under the hood with 120W wired fast charging support and 100W wireless ffst charging. Xiaomi is yet to release any official detail pertaining to the 12 though. So, these are just rumours at best.
