A new battery test has crowned the OnePlus 15 as the endurance champ of 2025, outlasting both the iPhone 17 Pro Max and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max.

YouTuber TechDroider ran all three phones through a 13-hour real-world test: three hours of PUBG Mobile, three hours of YouTube streaming, an hour and a half of browsing and Instagram, and nonstop 4K 60fps recording until they dropped.

All started at 100%, and here’s how things ended up:

• Xiaomi 17 Pro Max: 12h 50m
• iPhone 17 Pro Max: 13h 02m
• OnePlus 15: 13h 40m

Pretty close race, but OnePlus managed to hold on for nearly 40 minutes longer than Apple’s flagship.

The iPhone (physical SIM variant) deserves some credit, too — its 4,832 mAh battery kept up surprisingly well against the 7,300 mAh cell in the OnePlus 13 and 7,500 mAh pack inside Xiaomi 17 Pro Max (our review). That’s pure software efficiency from iOS and the A19 Pro chip doing the heavy lifting.

Still, OnePlus takes the win. Its mix of Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a silicon-carbon battery, and software optimizations seems to strike the right balance between performance and efficiency. OnePlus had talked up its performance tuning in ColorOS, and it’s good to see the OnePlus 15 living up to that promise.

And even though the iPhone 17 Pro Max runs on a much smaller battery, it’s neither slimmer nor lighter than its Android rivals:

• OnePlus 15: 8.1 mm, 215 g
• Xiaomi 17 Pro Max: 8 mm, 219 g
• iPhone 17 Pro Max: 8.8 mm, 233 g

It also charges slower and packs a technically inferior heat dissipation system. So, for anyone without a specific preference for iOS, neither performance nor in-hand comfort should be a dealbreaker when picking the OnePlus 15.

So, apart from the cover screen, the visual experience is basically the same.

Hardware

Another major aspect that remains unchanged between the two devices is the Qualcomm chip under the hood. The brand offers the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, built on a 3nm process and designed for high performance. This flagship chip is paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage.

A massive 7,500mAh battery pack powers the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, while the Redmi K90 Pro Max barely edges ahead with a 7,560mAh cell. The duo supports 100W wired fast charging, 50W wireless fast charging, and 22.5W reverse wired charging (22.5W reverse wireless charging support on the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max).

While Xiaomi’s top of the line smartphone gets a dual display setup, Redmi’s premium smartphone also gets a unique feature on the rear. Alongside its camera lenses, there is a dedicated woofer with ‘Sound by Bose’, which is a part of the 2.1 stereo sound field that includes the dual speakers.

Photography

Just like how the Redmi K90 Pro Max borrows the display from the 17 Pro Max, the K90 Pro Max borrows its main camera from another Xiaomi 17 series model. It arrives with a 50MP 1/1.31″ Light Fusion 950 sensor with OIS that is also found on the standard Xiaomi 17. This is paired with a 50MP ultra wide angle lens and a 50MP 5x periscope telephoto shooter (a first for the brand). For selfies and video calls, the front houses a 20MP camera.

On the other hand, the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max packs a larger 50MP Light Hunter 950L main sensor (1/1.28″), 50MP ultra wide angle lens, and 50MP periscope telephoto shooter with 5x zoom. There is also a 50MP shooter for selfies and video calls. Apart from better hardware, this model also brings Xiaomi’s collaboration with Leica.

Pricing & Final Thoughts

Lastly, let’s talk about the pricing. Xiaomi sells the 17 Pro Max with a starting price tag of 5,999 Yuan (roughly 841 US Dollars) for the 12GB + 512GB starting option. Meanwhile, the 12GB + 256GB base variant of the Redmi K90 Pro Max costs 3,999 Yuan (roughly 561 US Dollars). The higher 12GB + 512GB option costs 4,499 Yuan. So choosing between the Redmi K90 Pro Max and the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max comes down to what you prioritize most.

If you’re looking for high-end performance, a large battery, and a strong all-around phone at a better value, the K90 Pro Max stands out as a very compelling option. But if you want every premium feature, a richer camera system, a secondary display and the absolute top tier of flagship finishing, the 17 Pro Max delivers that.

It took four years for Xiaomi to fully capitalize on the idea of a rear display in a phone. The Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are the first phones since the Mi 11 Ultra to feature a secondary display on the camera module. And this time, it seems Xiaomi is finally taking the idea seriously.

In a recent livestream, Xiaomi President Lu Weibing confirmed that the company’s next-generation smartphones will continue to use the rear screen design. Xiaomi is also reportedly planning to increase its R&D investment in the coming years.

According to Lu, Xiaomi spent over 1 billion yuan developing the technology. The result is a 2.1-inch AMOLED panel that’s as good as the main screen. It has a 120Hz LTPO refresh rate, is protected by Dragon Crystal glass, supports the HDR standard, and peaks at 3500 nits of brightness. 

Xiaomi 17 Pro series is a massive hit in China

This investment seems to have paid off. The Xiaomi 17 series smashed sales records in China, becoming the fastest-selling phone lineup across all price segments in 2025.

Within just five minutes of launch, it broke first-sale records, while the Pro Max variant set a new benchmark for single-day sales among domestic smartphones. Overall sales rose 20% compared to the previous generation, and the Pro series tripled its sales figures.

Functionally, the rear screen on the Xiaomi 17 Pro already does more than just look cool. It can show notifications, answer calls, display real-time photo previews, and even feature dynamic “cute pets” and AI wallpapers. It’s also surprisingly useful for everyday tasks like displaying meal pickup codes, tickets, and itinerary reminders.

Lu also hinted that Xiaomi will roll out real-time translation for the rear screen by the end of October, with monthly feature updates to follow.

And looking at these figures, the Xiaomi 17 Pro series is seeing stiff competition. So here’s what we know.

Vivo X300 Pro Flexes Its Muscles with Dimensity 9500

Known tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore just shared a screenshot of AnTuTu benchmark results for both the Vivo X300 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. Looking at the test results, the Vivo X300 Pro, powered by MediaTek’s new Dimensity 9500, managed to achieve an impressive score of 3,956,885 points. In comparison, the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, which features Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, got a score of 3,731,077 points.

So the X300 Pro managed to edge past Xiaomi’s top flagship model. Apart from the overall score, Vivo’s latest flagship managed to win in multiple tests in the benchmark, including CPU, GPU, and memory performance. Although, it is worth noting that the X300 Pro doesn’t win by a massive margin, and only edges past the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. One notable area where the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max performed better is with thermal dissipation.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max ran noticeably cooler at around 17.2 degrees Celsius, while the Vivo X300 Pro Max’s temperature hit 20.6 degrees Celsius. Both models have only recently made their debuts, so future updates would likely refine these devices and improve their performance. So stick around for more.

Xiaomi just had one of its best weeks in China. During China’s National Day Golden Week, from September 29 to October 5, the company surpassed Apple to become the top-selling smartphone brand in China, taking a 21.2% market share. 

According to local sales data, the top five smartphone brands during the holiday period were Xiaomi, Apple, Vivo, Oppo, and Huawei. Apple came in second with a 16.30% share, while Vivo captured 15.90%. 

Xiaomi President Lu Weibing recently said cumulative sales of the Xiaomi 17 series have crossed 1 million units within days of launch. That’s 20% higher than the previous generation during the same timeframe.

Much of the credit for this success goes to the Pro models. Well-known industry blogger Digital Chat Station reported that combined sales of the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max and 17 Pro have already topped 800,000 units. 

Meanwhile, the standard Xiaomi 17 hasn’t matched the popularity of its higher-tier siblings. Sales reportedly reached around 194,000 units for it.

One standout feature driving sales of the Pro models is undoubtedly the back screen. Lu Weibing mentioned that Xiaomi invested heavily in this dual-screen setup, saying the cost of development alone was roughly 1 billion yuan. He also hinted that while competitors might try to replicate the idea, few would be willing to spend that much.

While the devices are enjoying strong success in China, they won’t make their way to the global market until next year. Even then, the Xiaomi 17 Pro is expected to remain exclusive to China.

The energy density of smartphone batteries is rapidly increasing, which should contribute to longer runtimes. While the iPhone 17 Pro Max packs a 4,823 mAh battery, Xiaomi’s 17 Pro Max includes a much larger 7,500 mAh cell, yet remains lighter (219 g) than Apple’s largest flagship (233 g). So it’s easy to assume that the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max would outlast the iPhone 17 Pro Max by a significant margin. But a recent battery drain test from TechDroider proved otherwise.

The test included the following phones:

• Xiaomi 17 Pro Max – 7,500 mAh
• iPhone 17 Pro Max – 4,823 mAh
• Galaxy S25 Ultra – 5,000 mAh
• Xiaomi 15 Pro – 6,100 mAh
• Pixel 10 Pro XL – 5,200 mAh
• OnePlus 13 – 6,000 mAh

The test consisted of a heavy gaming session, YouTube playback, web browsing, Instagram usage, and finally 4K video recording until the phones shut down.

While the Xiaomi did outlast every other phone in the test, the iPhone 17 Pro Max died only five minutes earlier, coming second despite having a 36% smaller battery. While the power efficiency of the A19 Pro and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 cannot be compared directly (as the two devices run on different platforms and are optimized differently), the major difference in energy content versus runtime suggests Apple has again done an incredible job with its tightly integrated hardware-software approach. Another battery drain test, involving the iPhone Air and Galaxy S25 Edge last month, also suggested the same.

The complete results were as follows:

• Xiaomi 17 Pro Max – 13 hours 36 minutes
• iPhone 17 Pro Max – 13 hours 31 minutes
• Xiaomi 15 Pro – 12 hours 31 minutes
• OnePlus 13 – 11 hours 56 minutes
• Pixel 10 Pro XL – 11 hours 28 minutes
• Galaxy S25 Ultra – 11 hours 20 minutes

While runtimes may vary depending on factors like platform-specific app optimization (for example, a game running better on iOS than Android) or network conditions (such as using a weak 5G connection instead of Wi-Fi), the test gives a good idea of where the Android phones stand relative to each other—and reinforces that the iPhone 17 Pro Max remains one of the top performers in battery endurance.

Within two days of its launch, the Xiaomi 17 series surpassed one million units sold. The Pro Max model accounted for more than half of the total, followed by the Pro version. Both devices successfully crossed the 6,000 Yuan (~$840) mark, reflecting a stronger positioning for Xiaomi’s flagship line-up. According to Weibing, this shift represents a historic improvement in the brand’s product structure.

One area of criticism, however, was the absence of a 1TB option in the standard Xiaomi 17 at launch. The company quickly responded by confirming mass production of a 1TB variant, which will officially go on sale from 5 October at 5,299 Yuan (~$745). This price is 200 Yuan (~$28) lower than the equivalent version of the Xiaomi 15.

Weibing highlighted that the 17 series has already outpaced the Xiaomi 15 in terms of sales speed and expressed confidence that the overall volumes will exceed the previous generation.

The Xiaomi 17 lineup just debuted in China alongside the new Xiaomi 15T. Now, a fresh leak has officially revealed the camera details of all four smartphones. While the 15T is a cutdown version of last year’s flagships, the new 17 series sees some surprising downgrades. So here’s everything you need to know.

Xiaomi 17

According to tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore, the standard Xiaomi 17 arrives with a 1/1.31-inch 50MP Light Hunter 950 as its main camera. This is a newer custom camera, but it keeps the same sensor size as last year’s Xiaomi 15, which had a 50MP Light Fusion 900.

Meanwhile, the 2.6x telephoto shooter remains the same between the two devices. However, the Xiaomi 15 has a bigger 1/2.76-inch Samsung ISOCELL JN1 ultra wide angle lens compared to the Xiaomi 17’s 1/2.88 inch 50MP OV50M ultra wide shooter. On the front, the same 50MP OV50M makes a return for the Xiaomi 17, which is an upgrade over the Xiaomi 15s’ 1/3.14-inch 32MP OV32B selfie camera.

Xiaomi 17 Pro & Xiaomi 17 Pro Max

The Xiaomi 17 Pro models share nearly identical camera setups, excluding the periscope telephoto lens. Both models get an upgraded 50MP 1/1.28-inch Light Hunter A950L primary camera, which matches the likes of the iPhone 17 Pros, Galaxy S25 Ultra, and Pixel 10 Pros. However, the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max gets a larger 1/1.95-inch ISOCELL GN8 5x periscope telephoto shooter.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro gets downgraded to the smaller JN5, but keeps the 5x optical zoom. The entire Xiaomi 17 lineup appears to use the same camera sensors for the ultra wide angle and selfie shooter, which is the 50MP OmniVision OV50M sensor.

Xiaomi 15T Series

Lastly, we have the Xiaomi 15T series. These are the Chinese tech giant’s budget flagship models. The vanilla 15T features the 1/1.55-inch OVX8000 as its main sensor, but the more expensive 15T Pro upgrades to the 1/1.31-inch OVX9100. Both of these are 50MP cameras, although the 15T Pro matches last year’s Xiaomi 15 flagship. For the ultra wide angle shots, the duo get the 12MP OV13B sensor.

Similar to the primary camera, the telephoto shooters are also different. The Xiaomi 15T Pro gets a longer 5x optical zoom range thanks to its Samsung JN5 shooter, while the JN5 on the base 15T maxes out at 2x zoom. You get a 32MP Samsung S5KKDS selfie camera on both versions.

The Takeaway

Calling these changes a straight downgrade can also be a bit unfair. The improved ISP on the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and better tuning on the cameras could give the newer flagship an edge. Hardware alone isn’t everything and cutting edge software optimizations show that. But these can be seen as trade offs from the brand offering more on certain areas, including a new rear display on the Xiaomi 17 Pros.

Samsung’s S Ultra phones—like the Galaxy S25 Ultra—are still regarded as some of the best camera phones on the market. But Chinese smartphone makers have been striving to improve their imaging prowess too, both by integrating larger optical hardware and by refining image processing. Apple, meanwhile, has moved from 12MP to a fairly large (1/1.28″) 48MP sensor—the same size used on the vivo X200 Ultra.

So how do they stack up in real-world tests? Thanks to Ice Universe, we now have sample images from the iPhone 17 Pro Max, Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, and the Galaxy S25 Ultra taken in different lighting conditions and at various zoom levels.

Starting with the close-up shot against a bright window, two things stand out: the subject in the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s shot appears the darkest, and Xiaomi’s claims about improved dynamic range extend beyond marketing. Apple lands somewhere in the middle. On closer inspection, the S25 Ultra’s sample also shows the most noise—even though this was a daytime shot.

The trend holds in the outdoor daytime photo. The tree appears completely dark in the S25 Ultra’s sample once again, while Xiaomi’s image keeps detail visible.

In well-lit conditions—the easiest scenario—the Xiaomi and Samsung samples look equally detailed, while the iPhone’s appears a bit softer. This is likely because both Android phones applied artificial sharpening (which can sometimes worsen image quality), while the iPhone left textures more natural. The zoomed-in view of the tree on the right highlights this difference.

The S23 Ultra made a big splash with its 200MP headline figure, and Samsung’s image processing was notably better than many early adopters of a 200MP sensor, but rivals have since caught up. As Chinese brands refined image processing while Samsung stuck with the same hardware, the S Ultra line has started to fall behind. More concerning is that the upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra, set for January 2026, is expected to keep most of the S25 Ultra’s camera hardware. Samsung may instead try to push AI-driven enhancements while keeping its bill of materials (BoM) flat—or lower.

Samsung’s goal has clearly been to prioritize design aesthetics over the largest possible camera hardware. But as Ice Universe shows, the protrusion of the S26 Ultra’s camera island is already close to that of the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. That means Samsung could have room to redesign the internals for more ambitious upgrades. “Samsung’s ultra-wide camera is underwhelming in specs yet occupies an excessive amount of space within the bump, which is a waste. Meanwhile, Xiaomi cleverly integrates its ultra-wide lens inside the body,” the tipster noted.

This year’s 17 Pro Max has arrived with full force. Not only does it feature the most powerful mobile processor, but its bezels have gotten narrower, charging speed has increased, and the camera module has been reshaped into a massive, rounded rectangle. You think I’m talking about the iPhone? Nope—I’m talking about Xiaomi’s 17 Pro Max.

As a former Xiaomi fan, I remember the last time a model looked this similar to an iPhone in both name and appearance—it was the Mi 8. Back then, although everyone criticized its huge chin and the notch without structured light, sales still surged significantly, and Xiaomi got a taste of that success. What I didn’t expect was that seven years later, Xiaomi, as a Fortune Global 500 company, would still be revisiting the same playbook. The good news is, the gap between the two 17 Pro Max models this time isn’t nearly as big as it was seven years ago. Xiaomi’s 17 Pro Max has also achieved stellar first-sale performance, just as they had hoped. Maybe this time, defeating Apple isn’t just a dream.

Rear Display

Before I complain about the rear display, I need to first complain about the frame design. Last year, I praised the Xiaomi 15 for extending its frame seamlessly into the back panel—it not only looked great but also felt incredibly smooth to the touch. Who knows, maybe Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro took inspiration from that very design. But this year, Xiaomi inexplicably abandoned the design I liked so much. So if next year’s Xiaomi 18 Pro ditches the rear screen, don’t be surprised—Xiaomi has always been like this.

Now, before I explain what this rear display can do, let’s look at its specs. The most important one: a minimum brightness of just 1 nit. Since this display supports AOD, its first function is personalization.

You can put a clock widget on it, or customize it with your own images. Using AI, you can even generate animated versions of your photos in different styles. Most of the time, you won’t be looking at this display—but others can see it, and it can show them what kind of person you are.

Xiaomi also lets you draw a circle to quickly pin content onto the rear screen. That means you can keep reminders or tricky-to-find information right on the back. That’s its second function.

The third function is obvious: selfies. Just like with the MIX Flip series, this rear display lets you use the main camera for selfies. Thanks to the powerful main camera, this makes the 17 Pro Max Xiaomi’s best selfie phone ever.

Of course, no one’s going to play games on a sub-3-inch display, so Xiaomi came up with a workaround. By using a special $42 case, you can play some classic games on the rear screen.

These games all feel strangely familiar; some companies probably want to sue Xiaomi after watching this video. There are only four games available, and once you get bored with them? Xiaomi allows third-party emulators to run on the rear display, which means theoretically hundreds or even thousands of games can be played. Not a bad way to kill time on a flight.

Oh, and don’t worry about privacy—the rear display will never show SMS messages. Currently, only a handful of apps support notifications here, though the global version might differ.

Yes, those are all the functions of the rear display. If you can live with a heavier phone, an entry-level vibration motor, downgraded USB transfer speed from 10Gbps to 5Gbps, a worse ultra-wide camera, no anti-reflective coating, neither display nor pre-applied film, then the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is a good phone for you.

Performance

As the first flagship smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen5, there is no doubt that the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max has climbed to the top of the Android performance charts. While we don’t yet know how it will compare to upcoming flagships with the Dimensity 9500 in two weeks, current benchmark scores suggest that the improvements aren’t as dramatic as some might have expected. We all know benchmarks are just for reference—high scores don’t necessarily translate to great real-world performance. To truly test a processor, you need to play games.

At max settings, Genshin Impact’s 20-minute frame rate curve looks like this. Five years ago, this game was a huge burden for mobile processors, but today’s chips handle it with ease. The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max performs well, but compared to last year’s 15 Pro, the difference isn’t huge. The only noticeable improvement is slightly lower temperatures. So let’s move to Honkai: Star Rail, which quickly exposes the 17 Pro Max’s limits.

Throttling kicks in within three minutes, with frame rates hovering around 37fps most of the time. The phone also gets uncomfortably hot. Even worse, during our first Genshin test, a bug caused the CPU frequency to suddenly spike, with temperatures nearing 50°C. So honestly, I don’t recommend this phone for heavy gamers—at least not with the current system version, which left me unsatisfied.

Display

This year, the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max’s display received a major upgrade. I’m not talking about the 3,000–4,000 nit peak brightness numbers that are nearly impossible to measure—I mean clarity.

Most smartphones today use Diamond Pentile pixel arrangement, which has a drawback: red and blue subpixels share neighbors, reducing effective PPI. That’s why 2K resolution became necessary in the OLED era.

If you’ve followed tablets, you’ll know that many now use RGB S-Stripe arrangements. This layout gives each pixel its own complete RGB subpixels, so PPI is uncompromised while also saving power.

That’s why, even though the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max has a lower resolution than its predecessor, clarity hasn’t dropped noticeably. Unfortunately, this new pixel arrangement is only on the Pro Max version for now. The good news is, Xiaomi doesn’t own the exclusive rights, so more smartphones will adopt this in the future. If you don’t want a Xiaomi, just wait for other flagships to catch up.

Cameras

To make room for the rear display, the triple-camera layout has changed. The ultra-wide camera was pushed down near the battery, and unsurprisingly, it’s been downgraded. I can accept the smaller sensor—it shrank by less than 5%, and the ultra-wide isn’t used that often. What bothers me is that its focal length increased from 14mm to 17mm. The field of view is significantly narrower. When switching from the main camera to the ultra-wide, your first reaction will be: “Does Xiaomi even know what “ultra-wide” means?”

At 17mm, the FOV is ridiculously tight. Even the iPhone’s front-facing video recording offers a similar field of view—sometimes with better quality. WTF.

After thinking it through, I suspect this was done to prevent the rear display from intruding into the ultra-wide’s field of view. Supporting this theory, neither the included case nor the Gameboy case extends around the bottom edge of the rear display. This is why I call it Xiaomi’s best selfie phone—not its best vlogging phone.

The main camera delivers excellent quality, but the FOV isn’t wide enough. The ultra-wide is wider, but still doesn’t beat a selfie cam and suffers from worse image quality. For vlogging, I’d actually recommend the front camera: bigger screen, similar image quality.

The telephoto camera, on the other hand, received a major upgrade. Zoom to 5x, and you always get great shots. But the 115mm focal length is too long. Even Tim Cook knew that 5x zoom was impractical for everyday use, so Apple shortened it to 100mm this year. Xiaomi sticking with 115mm feels inconvenient. Meanwhile, common focal lengths like 70mm or 85mm can only be achieved through cropping from the main sensor.

Naturally, I worried whether cropped 70mm shots would look blurry. Surprisingly, they turned out impressively sharp—even scarily so. Compared with the iPhone 17 Pro, the difference becomes obvious. Are these really just cropped shots? Yes—and no.

What actually happens is that the 5x telephoto captures the center portion, which is then blended with the cropped main sensor shot. That’s why the middle looks super sharp, but the edges don’t. You can test this yourself: take two 3x shots, one normally, and one with the 5x lens blocked. When I Zoom in, you’ll see what I mean.

Of course, if you’re too close for the 5x telephoto to lock focus, or if the lighting’s too weak and the image quality difference between the main and telephoto gets too big, the algorithm simply won’t kick in. All in all, the 23–115mm focal range gap isn’t as disastrous as it sounds. Xiaomi actually handled it surprisingly well.

The main camera’s biggest upgrade is dynamic range. Its sensor, using third-gen LOFIC technology, reaches up to 16.5EV. In simpler terms, backlit scenes are exposed more evenly. Comparing it against the iPhone 17 Pro shows a clear difference—Xiaomi pulls ahead in high-contrast situations.

LOFIC theoretically benefits video even more. HDR video looks great, though Xiaomi still trails the iPhone overall. Want to know which phone truly has the stronger camera system—the iPhone 17 Pro or the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max? Stay tuned, because we’ll have a full comparison video soon.

Battery Life

Now let’s talk batteries. The Pro Max packs a 7,500mAh cell—the largest among phones priced above $800. Still, endurance gains weren’t as big as we expected. However, charging is the real surprise. 100W wired charging is a nice upgrade, filling the battery in 40 minutes.

But the real highlight is this: the Xiaomi 17 series now supports 100W PPS charging. That means even a random Amazon charger can fast-charge the 17 Pro Max. In tests, third-party PD chargers charged nearly as fast as the stock one up to 50%, peaking around 80W and sustaining 40W for long periods.

Another good news: Xiaomi will soon open-source its private charging protocol. In the future, third-party chargers will unlock full 100W charging without needing official accessories. And don’t forget—there’s also 22.5W reverse charging. Combined with its 7,500mAh capacity, this phone doubles as a power bank. Without question, this is Xiaomi’s most powerful charging system ever.

My only concern is the global version’s battery size. If the global 17 Pro Max doesn’t meet your endurance needs, you know where to get the Chinese version.

Conclusion

Finally, let’s talk pricing. The standard version stayed the same as last year, but the Pro series saw price hikes across the board. By now, you probably already know whether it’s worth buying.

Yes, it brings a new design, a new display, a new processor, and stronger charging compatibility. But there are also hidden downgrades: a weaker ultra-wide camera, slower USB transfer speeds, and the gaming performance is not that good. Whether the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is good or bad depends on whether you care about those cons. At the very least, you can’t deny it’s a phone with strong character. Its hot sales in China prove people love it.

Xiaomi’s latest flagships, the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, went official on September 25 with a starting price of 4,999 yuan. Just days later, the company quietly published the official prices for repair parts on its website. 

For the 17 Pro, basic parts are fairly inexpensive. A new battery costs 199 yuan, while a replacement charger is 55 yuan, and the data cable is just 19 yuan. Even speakers are cheap, 15 yuan for the top one, 25 yuan for the bottom. Cameras, however, are another story. 

The wide-angle rear camera is listed at 450 yuan, while the periscope zoom camera will set you back 245 yuan. The front shooter is 65 yuan, and the ultra-wide rear is 80 yuan.

The biggest cost comes from the motherboard and the display. Depending on the storage option, the Xiaomi 17 Pro motherboard ranges from 2,730 yuan for the 12GB+256GB version up to 3,190 yuan for the 16GB+1TB version. The OLED display is priced at 990 yuan, and the rear glass panel costs 425 yuan.

The 17 Pro Max sees slightly higher numbers across the board. Its screen replacement jumps to 1,050 yuan, while the battery cover costs 495 yuan. The wide-angle rear camera is 435 yuan, the telephoto module is 350 yuan, and the ultra-wide remains at 80 yuan. Motherboards here are more expensive too, starting at 2,990 yuan and climbing to 3,450 yuan for the top configuration.

Display & Display

Both the iPhone 17 Pro Max and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max are premium devices that sure aluminum and glass bodies. But this time around, Apple has used more aluminum for improved heat dissipation while also adding a new vapor chamber for better cooling for the first time ever. The VC cooling tech was already a feature on previous gen and makes a return here. While there are rumors of the new iPhone 17 Pro Max’s body being prone to scratches, the new Ceramic Shield 2 has an impressive resistance. You get a tall 6.9 inch OLED panel with 2868×1320 pixels resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.

Meanwhile, the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED panel with a 1.5K resolution, a brighter 3,500nits of peak brightness, 120Hz refresh rate, and high frequency PWM dimming, and DC dimming support. This screen is protected by the Xiaomi Shield Glass. While the design can be subjective, Xiaomi brings an impressive new dual display design with a smaller 2.9-inch 120Hz secondary screen. Looking at the poster, the company claims that the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max have already set a new sales record for its flagship smartphone series. Notably, this new record was set just five minutes after the trio went on open sales.

As of right now, the brand has yet to share an exact figure. But the explosive initial sales could help the Xiaomi 17 lineup become one of the best selling flagship smartphone from the company. To recall, last year’s Xiaomi 15 series initially debuted with only two models in the family. This included the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Pro, with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra making a global debut alongside the base model a few months after.

So the higher sales figure could also be boosted by the third model. The Pro models are definitely a game changer, and the company also offers customers those models in a compact and tall form factor.

Xiaomi 17 Pro Max

Now the Pro and Pro Max are very interesting, because they have a giant screen at the back. Since they are very similar, we will only show the Pro Max here.

Let’s do a quick unboxing. There is the 100W charger and the cable at the bottom, then a clear case. Lastly, the phone.

So just at a glance, people always say it reminds them of the Camera Plato on the iPhone 17 Pro series, it kind of does, as the shape is very similar. But the major difference is that there is a screen there, rather than just a piece of metal. If you have watched some flip phone reviews, you must know what it means to have a smaller screen at the back. It will be so convenient for some notifications, taking phone calls, taking selfies, and even playing some games. Xiaomi has made a similar thing on the Xiaomi 11 Ultra, only it was a tiny screen there. It says the specs of this screen are just like the main screen, same material, same brightness, same refresh rate. And when it comes to selfies, it can provide softer light, to make the selfie look better. There is even a Game Boy case made just for it, for you to play some classic games at the back, or even some new games like Angry Birds. Overall, this back screen is going to be very useful and fun, we will show you more in the full review.

The overall build looks and feels very premium, the screen is made of so-called M10 material, the brightness will boost up to 3500nits max, but consumes less power, and is more eye-friendly. The bezels are very thin, and are also symmetrical at four corners, it looks very good. It says Xiaomi has put a lot of effort and money into the screens, supposedly leading the industry right now.  

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 debuted on the Xiaomi 17 Series, again the most powerful chipset besides Apple’s A19 Pro. The battery capacity is 7500mAh, which is very impressive to have such a big battery in a bar phone, and part of the reason why the battery should be so large is that, there is a second screen there, more battery is needed. Anyway, we should see more phones with over 7000mAh soon.     

It supports 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. And surprisingly it supports the regular PPS protocol, so you can also use regular high-power fast chargers that support PPS to charge this phone. Perhaps you can ditch that annoying Xiaomi one in the box, because it still uses Type-A port.

Finally about the camera system, it is a triple 50MP camera setup at the back, and a 50MP camera at the front. The Light Fusion 950 High Dynamic Sensor debuted on the Xiaomi 17 Pro and the Pro Max, and the LOFIC high dynamic range technology can be used in the main camera, which will benefit both photos and video recording a lot. Xiaomi 17

Moving on to the 17, as usual, it is made for those who love small phones. It inherits most of the design from the 15, but the color scheme is leaning towards a more vibrant style. Other than the black and white, there are also pink and blue. Xiaomi claims that they have made a change in the corners of the frame, with a new 19.6:9 ratio, meaning it is more rounded, supposedly very friendly to your palm.

It is still a 6.3” phone, you would feel very secure and pleasant holding it in your hand. The chip inside is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the same as the pro models. And the most notable feature is probably the battery size, 7000mAh, which is massive if we talk about a battery in a small body. One thing to mention though, the Xiaomi 17 Pro’s battery is actually smaller than the 17. The size of these two is the same, but the back screen on the 17 Pro takes up some space inside, therefore, the battery is smaller. It’s a slight trade-off, let us know which one you would choose.

When it comes to the camera system. It has a triple 50MP camera setup, the focal length of the main camera and the telephoto camera haven’t changed, but the wide-angle has changed from 14mm to 17mm, not as wide as before. The Light Fusion 950 High Dynamic Sensor debuted on the Xiaomi 17, it says the dynamic range and anti-flare performance are much improved. Together with the overall performance, we will test them out in the full review. The front camera is also a 50MP.

For some details that weren’t mentioned in the 17, they are either similar or the same as the Pro models.

Unfortunately, it is still unclear which models will be arriving in the Indian market. To recall, the Chinese tech giant previously released the Xiaomi 15 alongside the Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s global debut months after its original launch. So the brand could be following a similar pattern this time around as well. Meaning, that it is unclear if the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max are also heading to India. Xiaomi could very well wait for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and launch it in India along with the standard model that was just confirmed.

It comes preloaded with licensed games such as Angry Birds 2, Sky Destroyer, Furball Runner and the classic Snake. Since the games run independently, they can be played even in airplane mode without internet access.

The case connects automatically over Bluetooth, requires no complex setup, and is free from advertising interruptions. It also carries a 200mAh independent battery that can last up to 40 days, and charging is possible without removing the phone. However, when attached, the phone cannot support wireless charging.

Xiaomi 17 Pro series key features

The Xiaomi 17 Pro includes a 2.66-inch rear “MiEnjoy” screen that can show notifications, music controls, flight details, ride information, call handling, and camera previews. It even supports photography and video recording controls directly from the rear screen. On the front, the 17 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, whereas the 17 Pro Max is a larger device featuring a 6.8-inch screen.

 The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and is equipped with a 6,300mAh battery supporting 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. On the other hand, the 17 Pro Max packs a larger 7,500mAh battery and offers the same charging capabilities.  

According to reports, the Xiaomi 17 and the upcoming Xiaomi 17 Ultra will be sold globally. However, the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max may remain exclusive to the Chinese market.

However, there are plenty of ways the Xiaomi 17 series is inspired by Apple’s latest iPhones. So let’s talk about Xiaomi’s take on the iPhone 17 lineup.

Xiaomi 17 Series: What was revealed?

Xiaomi will introduce three models, namely the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, on 25th September 2025. The launch date and the design of the lineup were confirmed via a recent teaser image poster. These are the latest flagship phones from the brand, bringing cutting edge hardware like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with a refreshed design. The entire lineup is getting an update in the design, with the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max getting the most drastic change.

These two models now feature a secondary screen on the back, housed within the rectangular camera module. This panel will bring added functionality and offer a rear facing camera viewfinder as well. But all three models, including the standard Xiaomi 17, appear to be getting more rounded corners, which seems quite similar to the iPhone’s design language. Last year’s Xiaomi 15 also had rounded corners, but the curve on the edge was a lot more subtle at the end for a more boxy look.

Overlaps & How Xiaomi Matches Up

Apple unveiled the iPhone 17 series with various refinements, like narrower bezels. However, the Xiaomi 17 takes on these devices with an ultra slim 1.18mm bezel. But this is quite minor considering the rest of the things that seem more directly inspired by the 2025 iPhones.

One of these major “inspirations” is the Xiaomi Super Island. Just as the name suggests, the Dynamic Island first debuted on the iPhone 14 series. Many companies have offered their own iteration of this feature, and Xiaomi is the latest one to adopt this. HyperOS 3 is bringing Xiaomi Super Island with added functionality for improved multitasking as well.

There are also rumors of HyperOS 3 bringing a bunch of refinements to the UI. But leaked screenshots have also revealed what appears to be a Liquid Glass inspired transparent glass like search bar. Xiaomi is skipping the Xiaomi 16 series for the Xiaomi 17, which was a surprising change that was likely made to match the new iPhone 17s. Even the new flagship Xiaomi 17 Pro Max appears to be directly named after Apple’s top of the line iPhone Pro Max models.

Xiaomi x Apple Integration?

Even if we ignore the clear inspiration in design, software, and naming, Xiaomi also has another trick up its sleeve to make sure you know it’s “close to Apple”. In a sense, HyperOS 3 is cozy with Apple, blurring ecosystem boundaries with seamless Apple ecosystem integration. Your Apple iPad and Macs can now run multiple floating app windows and even unlock your Xiaomi device using Face ID or Touch ID. Push notifications, photos, files, and even replies on messaging apps sync seamlessly across devices. Sharing pictures and media between Xiaomi devices and even iPhones is effortless as well.

Instead, it introduces a redesigned camera island with a softer, rounded square shape compared to the Xiaomi 15. The individual camera modules now protrude slightly, similar to recent iPhones. The overall design also adopts more rounded corners than before.

Xiaomi says the phone will use a 6.3-inch flat display with ultra-slim 1.18mm bezels and a 19.6:9 aspect ratio. At 191 grams, it’s designed to stay lightweight and comfortable.

The 17 Pro is shown in “Cold Smoke Purple,” while the Pro Max comes in “Forest Green.” Interestingly, both Pro models feature completely flat displays, a departure from last year’s micro-quad curved design. Their corners have also been updated to match the base model.

On the back, the Pro and Pro Max integrate the secondary “Magic Back Screen” into the camera module. Two of the lenses protrude slightly, while the third sits flush with the back panel. Xiaomi says this extra display can be used for notifications, selfie previews, clocks, and more. The standard Xiaomi 17 is said to feature a 7,000mAh cell, up from 5,400mAh on the Chinese Xiaomi 15 (our review). That alone would mark a big jump in endurance, especially paired with the efficiency improvements expected from the new Snapdragon chip.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro may come with a 6,300mAh battery, slightly smaller than the base model but still a step up from the 6,100mAh found in the 15 Pro.

At the top end, the rumored Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is tipped to carry a massive 7,500mAh battery, making it one of the largest in a mainstream flagship. All three models are said to support 100W fast charging, compared to the 90W standard on the previous generation.

The tipster also shared a photo containing four separate batteries, one of which (the one on the right) is believed to belong to the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. It’s reportedly a 6,800mAh unit, outpacing the 6,000mAh cell in last year’s 15 Ultra.

According to our source, the Xiaomi 17 series may launch in China as early as September 30. While this has not been officially confirmed, Xiaomi recently began teasing the 17 Pro series, suggesting the official launch date could be announced soon.

Reports indicate that Xiaomi will launch three models in the series: the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. While details on the standard version remain limited, information about the Pro models has already surfaced.
