Some of the most exciting phones in the world right now are ones you simply cannot walk into a store and buy, not if you live in the United States, anyway. While Americans are busy debating iPhone versus Pixel, a whole other tier of smartphones is being sold in China, Europe, and parts of Asia that would make your current device feel embarrassingly ordinary. 

These phones push cameras, screens, and designs further than anything available at your local carrier store. You just can’t have them. Well, not easily.

To be clear, this isn’t a list of what’s coming soon or what might launch in the US someday. These are phones you can buy right now, just not in the US. Some are blocked due to trade restrictions. Others never made the trip because the manufacturers decided the market wasn’t worth the trouble. A few exist in a legal grey area that makes importing them genuinely complicated. Whatever the reason, they’re out there, and they’re good. Really good.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra

Xiaomi has been building its partnership with Leica for a few years, and the 17 Ultra is where that work really pays off. The main camera sits on a one-inch sensor, and we called it one of the most ambitious smartphones of the year after getting hands-on time with it at launch.

What sets it apart from the usual flagship camera race is the Leica Essential mode, which gives photos their emotions back. Rather than chasing sharpness and perfect accuracy, it pulls back highlights, lets shadows breathe, and adds a subtle grain that makes images feel like they were taken with a real camera rather than optimised by a computer. It’s a genuinely different philosophy, and it works.

The battery is the biggest in any Xiaomi Ultra device yet, and the phone is rated for dust and water resistance at three separate ingress protection levels. It starts at around €1,249 in Europe.

Oppo Find X9 Ultra

The Find X9 Ultra is Oppo’s most powerful phone yet, and it comes with a camera setup that looks borderline excessive on paper. Two 200-megapixel sensors, a third 50-megapixel periscope, and a 50-megapixel ultrawide. 

So as you might guess, the Find X9 Ultra targets the ultra-premium segment, competing directly with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Vivo X300 Ultra as one of the most camera-forward phones on the market.

The Hasselblad tuning on the camera gives the results a more natural, less processed quality that’s different from what Samsung or Google serve up. The Find X9 Ultra leans into a more expressive design with eco-leather options that give a tactile, character-driven feel.

It starts at Rs 169,999 in India, or about $1,776 at current exchange rates. Not cheap, but then again, you’re getting four cameras, with two of them shooting at 200 megapixels.

Vivo X300 Ultra

Vivo has been making some of the most interesting camera phones in the world for a couple of years now, and the X300 Ultra continues that streak. Though the upgrades this year are just too incremental. 

Our first impression of the phone was that it might as well be called the X200s Ultra. Not to say the improvements aren’t noticeable, but modest compared to the generational leap of its predecessor.

That said, what it does well, it does exceptionally. For instance, the “Raw Lighting” mode dials back the computational processing to produce images that look more like they came from a professional camera than a phone. Saturation is reduced, sharpening is toned down, and the fine details come out more naturally. It’s the kind of feature that’s far more useful day-to-day than any flashy filter.

The main camera uses a Sony LYTIA 901 sensor, and Zeiss handles the colour calibration. The telephoto is a genuine upgrade over last year’s, though we found a noticeable difference only in low light. In good lighting, the gap between the X300 Ultra and X200 Ultra is minimal.

The 6,600mAh cell and 100W wired charging run everything. Available from around €1,999.

Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max 

Display 6.9-inch LTPO OLED, 1.5K, 120Hz, Kunlun Glass Chip Kirin 9030S Cameras 50MP main (RYYB sensor, f/1.4–f/4.0 variable aperture) + 200MP periscope telephoto + 40MP ultrawide Battery 6,000mAh — 100W wired Durability IP68/IP69

Huawei is the most complicated name on this list. US trade restrictions have essentially cut the company off from American markets, and using one here comes with real trade-offs — no Google services, limited app support, and software that takes some patience to work around.

With all of that said, the Pura 90 Pro Max’s camera system is genuinely worth knowing about. The Pro Max is the top of the lineup this time, and it leads with a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera, a first for any Huawei flagship. The phone also supports up to 20x telephoto video recording using that same lens, putting it in rarefied company on the zoom front.

The main camera uses a variable aperture that physically adjusts like a real camera — ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0 — which gives you more control over depth of field than any fixed-lens phone can match. Huawei calls this its second-generation Red Maple Image technology, designed to maintain natural colours in complex lighting situations like sunsets or firelight, where other phones tend to go strange.

We compared the phone against the Vivo X300 Ultra, and while it delivers a more elegant and refined experience, it sits a step behind on raw display quality and outright performance. At around $1,199, it’s the most affordable phone on this list. Imported that is. 

Huawei Pura X Max

Most foldable phones fold to be taller and narrower, or they flip to be compact. The Pura X Max does something different. It folds horizontally to create a screen that’s wider rather than taller, closer in shape to a compact iPad than a regular phone. It is the industry’s first horizontally wide foldable with a 7.7-inch inner display and a near 4:3 aspect ratio. 

Spoiler: the upcoming iPhone Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide might share a similar footprint.

Such a design has a real upside. Watching video, reading, multitasking, editing photos, or anything you’d normally do on a small tablet is much more comfortable on a display shaped like this. The 5.4-inch outer screen is wide enough to handle messages and calls without unfolding. And despite the large displays, Huawei kept the weight to a reasonable 229 grams and the unfolded thickness to just 5.2mm.

The same Google services caveats that apply to the Pura 90 Pro Max apply here, too. And the water resistance rating of IP58/IP59 is a step below what Honor manages on the Magic V6. But as a piece of hardware, thinking differently about the foldable form factor, there’s nothing quite like it. 

Honor Magic V6

Folding phones have always come with compromises you had to accept in exchange for the novelty. The Magic V6, which debuted at MWC 2026, is the clearest sign yet that Honor has figured out how to close that gap.

Our impression of the foldable was that the crease on the inner display is remarkably shallow, even after a week of heavy use. Honor’s new Super Steel design, rated for 500,000 folds, also feels solid and smooth throughout. It measures 8.75mm folded and just 4mm when open.

Where Honor brings real improvement is ingress protection. The Magic V6 is the first foldable phone in the world to earn both IP68 and IP69 ratings. Getting caught in the rain with a foldable has always been a mild source of anxiety. Not anymore, at least with this one.

The Magic V6 also offers an exceptional camera experience for a foldable. The main is a 50MP sensor that captures an incredible amount of detail, even after significant cropping during post-processing. The periscope telephoto lens supports 3x and 6x optical zoom, though, at 6x, AI processing is quite prominent. 

What you should know before importing

Importing any of these phones is possible, but not always simple. You’ll want to research band compatibility carefully; not all models support the same 5G and LTE frequencies used in the US, which means you might end up with slower data speeds or limited coverage.

The Huawei devices in particular require workarounds for apps that rely on Google services. And warranty support? You’re largely on your own. But if you’ve ever looked at what’s available at your carrier and thought this is it? Now you know there’s a lot more out there. Just not here.

Xiaomi’s Android 17 Developer Preview program has just gone live, and it brings an unexpected upgrade to HyperOS 3.3. The company has restricted the beta program’s access to a limited number of high-end smartphones initially, with broader device support coming in the near future.

The Developer Preview program is currently available for four Xiaomi devices: Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Ultra, Xiaomi 15T Pro, and Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi. If you’re rocking any of these devices, you can sign up for the testing program and get access to the upcoming features and upgrade well ahead of the public release. This release, however, signals a major shift in Xiaomi’s naming strategy for its HyperOS skin.

As spotted by Ximi Time, the Android 17 beta build for Xiaomi devices comes with HyperOS 3.3, skipping HyperOS 3.2 for some reason. This suggests Xiaomi won’t make the jump to HyperOS 4 but will pair HyperOS 3.3 with Android 17.

How to get Android 17 beta on your Xiaomi device

Remember that beta builds are prone to having bugs or unfinished features. Some apps may face compatibility issues. Therefore, it’s best to avoid such builds altogether or install them on a secondary device.

Before installing a beta build, it’s highly recommended to back up important data to cloud storage or copy it to a different device to be on the safe side.

After an initial release in China, Xiaomi is expanding the rollout of HyperOS 3.1 to other regions. The update initially rolled out globally for the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra, starting with Europe, and then quickly expanded to POCO and Redmi devices.

The HyperOS 3.1 global update is currently rolling out to these devices:

Xiaomi is already rolling out the stable version of HyperOS 3.1 in China, and now the focus is shifting to the global market as the company has just begun rolling out the HyperOS 3.1 global beta for the initial batch of devices.

The initial Mi Pilot rollout of HyperOS 3.1 is currently restricted to the latest flagship smartphones, as reported by Xiaomi Time. Here’s the list of those devices and the firmware versions:

• Xiaomi 17 Ultra (EEA): OS3.0.301.3.WPAEUXM
• Xiaomi 17 (Global): OS3.0.300.7.WPCMIXM

The list is too short for now, as the global beta rollout has just gone live. However, it will keep getting bigger as Xiaomi pushes the beta to more devices over the coming days and weeks.

Keep in mind that beta builds are prone to having bugs and unfinished features. Hence, it’s best to back up your important data before installing a beta build. The best route is to install them on a secondary device.

Step 1: Download the Mi Community app and create an account.

Step 2: Make sure the region is set to “Global”. To change the current region, tap ME in the bottom-right corner and go to Set up > Change region.

Step 3: Select the beta program available for your device and click the Apply button.

Step 4: Tap the Answer button and submit your responses. Aim for at least 60 points for greater chances of being selected for the beta program.

Step 5: Click Apply and then Apply again to submit your application.

Step 6: Wait for the approval (it may take up to seven days). Go to the Mi Community app > ME > Beta testing to check the status.

Step 7: Once your application is approved, go to Settings > About phone and tap the HyperOS version to check for updates.

Due to rising storage costs, both devices are tipped to be priced significantly higher than the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, with an estimated increase of around 500 yuan (~$70) for comparable variants.

The tipster adds that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s early-mover advantage was largely due to its pricing. In hindsight, the 500 yuan to 700 yuan price increase over the Xiaomi 15 Ultra now seems relatively minor, especially as upcoming ultra-flagships like the Vivo X300 Ultra and Oppo Find X9 Ultra are expected to launch at noticeably higher prices due to rising storage costs.

To recall, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra has been available in China in three versions, such as 12GB+512GB, 16GB+512GB, and 16GB+1TB. These variants are priced at 6,999 Yuan (~$1,020), 7,499 Yuan (~$1,080), and 8,499 Yuan (~$1,235), respectively.

Xiaomi is readjusting its India launch timeline for the Xiaomi Pad 8 and the Xiaomi 17 series.

The company originally unveiled the Xiaomi 17 series at MWC 2026. Soon after that, it announced that the phones, along with the tablet, would launch on March 11. However, Xiaomi has now confirmed that the India launch has been rescheduled.

According to updates shared on X, the Xiaomi Pad 8 will arrive on March 10, with the Xiaomi 17 series following a day later on March 11.

Xiaomi Pad 8

For India, Xiaomi is keeping the spotlight on the standard Pad 8. It features an 11.2-inch LCD panel with a 3.2K resolution (3200 x 2136) and a 3:2 aspect ratio, which is slightly taller than the usual 16:10 format seen on many Android tablets.

The display supports a 144Hz adaptive refresh rate and peaks at 800 nits of brightness. It also brings Dolby Vision and HDR10 support, along with 12-bit color depth.

Furthermore, the screen supports wet-touch input and carries TÜV Rheinland certifications for low blue light, flicker-free viewing, and circadian-friendly performance. 

Powering the Pad 8 is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chip built on a 4nm process, paired with LPDDR5X RAM. Storage options include 128GB with UFS 3.1 or 256GB/512GB with faster UFS 4.1.

Despite the fancier name, it’s essentially the international version of the China-exclusive Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition, with a few changes meant for global markets. 

Xiaomi Leica Leitzphone Specifications

The biggest difference is battery size. While the Chinese variant packs a 6,800mAh battery, the Leitzphone and regular Xiaomi 17 Ultra both feature a 6,000mAh cell.

The Leitzphone comes in a single black finish with a fully black rear panel. It’s available in just one configuration: 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

Under the hood, the hardware remains identical to the Leica Edition sold in China. The phone runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3. Up front, there’s a 6.9-inch LTPO “HyperRGB” OLED display with a 1–120Hz adaptive refresh rate. It supports Dolby Vision and can reach up to 3,500 nits of peak brightness.

This release is set for Barcelona, Spain, just before the start of the Mobile World Congress 2026 event. The spotlight will be on the standard Xiaomi 17 and the high-end Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which are expected to lead Xiaomi’s premium portfolio this year with advanced imaging co-engineered with Leica.

Xiaomi’s “The New Wave of Imagery” launch event will kick off in Barcelona at approximately 14:00 GMT+1, right ahead of MWC. The launch will stream live globally via Xiaomi’s official channels, and the Chinese tech giant is already encouraging fans to reserve their spot on the official event page. Live viewers can even enter prize draws and qualify for exclusive perks during the stream.

Details are still sketchy, but the official teaser does confirm benefits like a chance to win their latest AIoT product, 24 month of quality assurance, one free screen replacement within 6 months, and out of warranty repair with free labor costs within the warranty period. Just a few days after a report suggested that Xiaomi could bring the Xiaomi 17 series to India with a price hike of more than 20 percent, a new leak tells a very different story for the rest of the world. According to Dealabs, the upcoming Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra will launch globally without any price hike.

Dealabs reports that Xiaomi is keeping prices in Europe identical to those of the Xiaomi 15 series. That’s notable given that the new phones bring meaningful upgrades, particularly in battery capacity and efficiency.

Here’s how much it will cost in Europe:

Fortunately, the report also reveals the launch date. According to it, the Xiaomi 17 lineup will debut globally on February 28, 2026, just ahead of Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona. 

Xiaomi has often used the days leading into MWC to secure attention before the show floor gets crowded with competing announcements, and this year appears no different.

Xiaomi 17 and Ultra Specifications 

As for the specs, the Xiaomi 17 features a 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, up to 1TB storage, and a triple 50MP camera setup with Leica lenses. Battery life is solid at 7000 mAh with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging.

The 17 Ultra ups the ante with a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED, a 200MP periscope telephoto, 1TB storage, and a 6800 mAh battery supporting 90W wired and 50W wireless charging. Both run Android 16 with HyperOS 3 and offer IP68 protection, stereo speakers, and high-res audio support.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has finally entered the DxOMark rankings, and unsurprisingly, it’s among the top camera phones on the market right now. However, Xiaomi still has some work to do to reach the top of the leaderboard.

According to DxOMark, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra scored 166 points for its camera, placing it in 6th position overall. 

DxOMark says the device delivers well-balanced photography across all focal lengths. From ultra-wide shots to telephoto zoom, performance is consistent.

The lab also highlights natural subject exposure, rich detail, and stable white balance in most scenes. Color reproduction is described as accurate, too, along with controlled noise, even in low light.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra ranks among the best camera phones per DxOMark

The hardware, of course, plays a big role here. The phone features a 50MP main camera with an f/1.7 aperture, 23mm focal length, dual-pixel phase detection autofocus, and optical image stabilization.

There’s also a 50MP ultra-wide camera at f/2.2 and 14mm. The standout on paper is the 200MP telephoto lens, offering a variable f/2.4–3.0 aperture, 75–100mm focal length, PDAF, OIS, and 3.2x to 4.3x optical zoom.

DxOMark gave the device 170 points for overall photo performance. Breaking that down further, the main camera earned 171 points, bokeh scored 175 points, the ultra-wide scored 160 points, and zoom scored 169 points.

The telephoto performance, in particular, is said to be high-level, which delivers strong detail at longer focal lengths and natural-looking background separation in portrait shots.

Video, however, is where the Xiaomi 17 Ultra shows some limitations. The overall video score stands at 157 points. The main camera’s video performance scored 164 points, while the ultra-wide and telephoto video results were lower at 144 and 132 points, respectively. 

DxOMark notes that while brightness and exposure are generally good indoors and outdoors, low-light video still struggles more than the best devices in its class. Zoom transitions during video recording can also appear noticeable.

There are a few other trade-offs, like group photos can sometimes result in foreground subjects appearing slightly out of focus. And although texture and noise are well balanced in photos, low-light video doesn’t maintain the same consistency.

In terms of competition, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra didn’t overtake the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra at the top of the rankings. Still, it managed to outperform several high-profile devices, including the Magic 8 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Xiaomi’s next flagship phones may already have a price tag in India, months before their expected debut. According to tipster Abhishek Yadav, the series could start at Rs 80,000 for the standard Xiaomi 17, while the Xiaomi 17 Ultra may land at Rs 1,25,000 in the country. 

No surprises, Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed these numbers, and as with most early leaks, they should be taken cautiously. Still, the pricing suggests Xiaomi is preparing to move further into ultra-premium territory in India.

For context, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra launched at Rs 1,09,999 for the single 16GB + 512GB variant. The regular Xiaomi 15, meanwhile, had a starting price of Rs 64,999 for the 12GB + 512GB model. 

If the leak is true, the standard Xiaomi 17 would see a 23% increase over its predecessor, while the Ultra model would see a 14% hike. 

What could Xiaomi be thinking?

Xiaomi has spent the last few years refining its premium image in India, particularly with its Ultra lineup. At ₹1,25,000, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra wouldn’t just be competing on specs; it would be competing on brand perception, software polish, long-term updates, and ecosystem value. Those are areas where Samsung and Apple have historically had an edge.

Another factor affecting the price is the ongoing memory shortage that has driven up consumer device prices. Phones, of course, are one of those commodities. 

Meanwhile, the Xiaomi 17 itself appears to be confirmed for India. The device recently surfaced on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification database, a common sign that a launch is in the pipeline. 

As for timing, the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra are expected to follow a similar launch window to last year’s Xiaomi 15 series. According to earlier information from the same tipster, Xiaomi could unveil the new models around March 2026.

Although we are hearing rumors of a fifth member of the Xiaomi 17 series in China, the company has yet to announce any Xiaomi 17 models globally. Still, the picture outside China is starting to come together.

Certifications have already hinted at an international rollout, and now a fresh set of leaks adds more clarity around colors, storage options, pricing, and even battery differences.

According to a leak shared by tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore, Xiaomi is preparing to launch the Xiaomi 17 series globally, starting with the Xiaomi 17 and the higher-end Xiaomi 17 Ultra.

The standard Xiaomi 17 5G is expected to come in two storage variants: 12GB of RAM paired with either 256GB or 512GB of storage. Color options are said to include Black, Blue, and Green. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra 5G appears to target power users, with 16GB of RAM and storage options of 512GB or 1TB, available in Black, White, and Green.

Xiaomi 17 price leaks for the Eurozone

As for the price, a German retailer listing (spotted by Notebookcheck) reveals the Xiaomi 17 could retail at €1,099 for the 512GB variant. However, considering Ambhore’s leak, 256GB is the base for Xiaomi 17. As a result, we can expect a lower starting price, maybe around €999.

The retailer listing also reveals some hardware compromises for global buyers. While the Xiaomi 17 sold in China is expected to feature a massive 7,000mAh battery, the global version reportedly comes with a smaller 6,330mAh battery. That’s still a notable 20 percent increase over the 5,240mAh battery found in the previous global model, and it will support 100W fast charging. 

As for timing, Xiaomi is expected to begin selling the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra globally after MWC 2026 wraps up in March.

If most smartphone imaging systems are chasing “more clarity” and “greater accuracy,” then the Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica is clearly taking a different path—it tries to give photos their emotions back. When you switch to Leica Essential mode, this phone stops obsessing over reproducing everything exactly as it is, and instead makes deliberate choices. Highlights are restrained, shadows are allowed to fall silent, and a subtle grain appears, like a breath carried over from the film era.

The image is no longer just a record of “what happened,” but a complete story being told. If you’re not interested in Leica, then don’t buy this phone. Out of the $1,000 you’re paying, at least $500 goes directly into every aspect of the Leica collaboration— the exclusive Leica Essential mode, the Leica red dot, the camera ring, and a full range of Leica-branded accessories. This device is, quite literally, a Leica camera that can make calls and fit into your pocket.

Leica Essential

The Leica M9 look, and the M3 with Monopan 50 film look are not filters. Like Leica’s Authentic modes, they are processed directly within the ISP and output as is. That’s why you simply can’t recreate such natural Leica-style images through basic post-processing. You can even use cloud-based image processing to enhance image quality, but photos shot in Leica Vibrant and Leica Authentic can’t.

The white balance of the M9 looks is fixed to daylight, which does a great job of preserving the warmth of the lighting. However, because white balance cannot be adjusted in this mode, photos taken indoors can easily appear too yellow. Switching back to Leica Vibrant is a better option in those situations.

Another issue is launch speed. Getting into Leica Essential mode is not as quick as Fastshot mode, which caused me to miss quite a few great moments.

One of the reasons that makes Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica so special is the camera ring. Yes, it really can be rotated to adjust focal length. You can also customize its function, such as rotating to control EV or filters, or rotating to jump directly into Leica Essential mode.

Unfortunately, just like the camera control button on the iPhone, this camera ring is… not as good to use as you might imagine. Because the ring is quite loose, it’s easy to be triggered accidentally, and it feels cheap in use. It makes sense why it’s designed this way—to prevent deformation from drops or getting stuck due to dust. This isn’t me making excuses for Xiaomi; they explained this in a recent official announcement.

But all of that can be summed up in one sentence: it’s not pleasant to use. Compared to the camera ring, I’d much rather control the camera using the grip from the photography kit.

Photography Kit

If you’re willing to, you can add another $100 at purchase to get the photography kit for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. This generation combines all the advantages of previous versions. It still supports 67mm camera filters, the grip still can be connected to the phone via USB-C, and it still has a built-in 2,000mAh battery.

The replaceable shutter button is still there, and the dial has been redesigned to make it feel more like that of a professional camera. The control area has also been moved lower, making it more ergonomic. The thumb grip is now integrated, with a metal outer layer just like before. There are even magnets in the phone case, making it compatible with all MagSafe accessories. These are genuine upgrades—but there are always some downgrades.

Like the phone’s camera ring, the rotating structure on the case is still very loose, which makes it feel less premium. The case material has also changed from vegan leather to plain plastic. My biggest complaint is that the case blocks the Leica red dot logo. If you use the case included in the phone box, the grip cannot lock onto the phone at all. Listen, Xiaomi: if you don’t want to spend more on Leica licensing for the photography kit, then at least cut a hole in the case.

At the moment, I only recommend this kit to users who bought the regular 17 Ultra. Oh, and Xiaomi has also released a Photography Kit Lite—Leica edition. Users should avoid it as well, because it blocks the camera ring.

Telephoto

Now that we’re done with the Leica part, let’s talk about image quality. How is the image quality of this telephoto camera with true optical zoom? Good—but not good enough. The good part is that it doesn’t have any obvious flaws. Whether you’re watching this video on a phone or a computer, as long as I don’t zoom in, you probably can’t find anything wrong with the photos, right? And with In-Sensor Zoom available at both 200mm and 400mm, its telephoto reach is actually quite strong.

The reason I say it’s still not good enough is that, in slightly dimmer lighting, the image quality looks a bit soft. In terms of sharpness, it can even be slightly worse than the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. Another limitation is the 30cm minimum focusing distance, which makes it hard to call the shots true macro.

That’s one of the trade-offs of optical zoom. By the way, if you shake the phone and hear something moving inside the camera, that’s because the camera module is very large. The sound comes from the OIS module and the telephoto lens group moving, and this is completely normal.

As for the focal length range, 75mm to 100mm sounds quite wide on paper, but in practice, the difference in field of view between 75mm and 100mm isn’t that big. Taking two steps forward can give you a similar result.

Why not make the range wider? Xiaomi explained this in the same announcement: there simply isn’t enough internal space to fit a telephoto module beyond 100mm. Being able to satisfy users who like 75, 85, 90, and 100mm lenses is already the best Xiaomi could do.

Main Camera & Video

Although the 17 Ultra still uses a one-inch main sensor, the model has changed. The biggest upgrade is the addition of LOFIC technology. Simply put, this increases dynamic range, especially in highlight control. Video also benefits from LOFIC: areas that would normally blow out are now much better controlled, resulting in a noticeable improvement in dynamic range.

However, I’m not very satisfied with the video recording on the 17 Ultra. The image stabilization isn’t stable enough, and motion blur caused by stabilization appears quite frequently. If a one-inch sensor performs like this, the ultra-wide camera can only be worse.

Besides image quality that’s genuinely hard to accept, there are also some strange, almost bug-like behaviors. For example, the person at the bottom of this footage. In very dark environments, subjects show trailing and color noise. Clearly, the video recording experience isn’t fully ready yet, and we’ll have to wait for updates and optimization.

Ultra-wide Camera & Selfie

On the bright side, the ultra-wide camera is 14mm, which means it offers a much wider field of view than other phones in the 17 series. If you look at these photos on their own, the quality isn’t terrible. But when you consider that I paid $1,000, and the other two cameras are so good, the ultra-wide camera ends up feeling especially weak. Perhaps for a photography-focused phone like this, sacrificing the ultra-wide camera in favor of the main and telephoto is something people can accept more easily.

The selfie camera has seen a slight upgrade to a 50MP sensor. Under normal conditions, selfies are perfectly fine, and the larger sensor really helps in low light. Even when the lighting is weak, facial details aren’t lost too badly. As a man, I’m already quite satisfied with this level of selfie quality.

Performance

I think I’ve talked enough about the cameras, so it’s time to discuss the Xiaomi 17 Ultra as a smartphone. There’s not much left to say about the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform—you can basically consider it the most powerful mobile processor available right now. Its performance in benchmarks is actually a bit more aggressive than the 17 Pro Max.

For an imaging-focused flagship, the gaming experience on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is excellent. It maintains high frame rates without throttling, and temperatures stay reasonable. We also didn’t find any “cheating” behavior like resolution scaling. So, as long as you don’t mind the lack of frame interpolation, it can easily serve as a gaming phone for the next three to five years.

Display & Battery

There isn’t much to say about the display either. Like the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, it’s now flat and uses a new pixel arrangement. This is currently Xiaomi’s most advanced display.

While we’re now in an era where smartphone battery capacities have exceeded 10,000mAh, 6,800mAh may not sound huge anymore—but you definitely can’t call it small. I’d say it’s more than enough. If battery life is especially important to you, Xiaomi gave you another option three months ago. If you treat the 17 Ultra purely as a camera, after a full day of intensive shooting, it still has 26% battery remaining.

It supports 90W wired charging, which is more than enough for most people. Wireless charging dropping from 80W to 50W is definitely a step back, but considering that wired charging supports 90W PPS and reverse charging has been increased to 22.5W, the overall charging system is still a clear improvement over the 15 Ultra.

Conclusion

After taking nearly 600 photos in Hong Kong, the positioning of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra became increasingly clear to me. The photos it takes may not be the sharpest, but they are absolutely the most emotionally rewarding. If you love photography, you may have many reasons why you can’t buy a real Leica M camera—but you really have no reason not to buy a Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica.

It’s smaller, cheaper, and more durable. I believe that over the next year, it will become my main camera, being with me as I capture more stories from the streets and alleys of everyday life.

Xiaomi has officially revealed the repair parts pricing for its latest flagship, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. As expected, the company lists the display, motherboard, and camera as the most expensive components.

The 6.73-inch AMOLED display is priced at 990 yuan ($138.6). The motherboard for the 12GB + 512GB model costs 2,980 yuan ($417.2), while the 16GB + 1TB variant is priced at 3,440 yuan ($481.6).

Xiaomi has kept the pricing for other components consistent across both variants. The main wide-angle camera module is priced at 850 yuan ($119). The periscope telephoto camera costs 795 yuan ($111.3). The ultra-wide camera is listed at 85 yuan ($11.9), and the front-facing camera is priced at 60 yuan ($8.4). The battery costs 159 yuan ($22.26), and the back cover is priced at 330 yuan ($46.2).

Additional components include the sub-board at 60 yuan ($8.4), top speaker at 55 yuan ($7.7), bottom speaker at 25 yuan ($3.5), charger at 55 yuan ($7.7), and data cable at 19 yuan ($2.66).

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra centers its upgrade around imaging, marking the first phone built under Xiaomi and Leica’s new Strategic Co-creation Model. The triple-camera system pairs a 1-inch Light Fusion 1050L main sensor with LOFIC HDR for stronger highlight and shadow control, a 14mm ultra-wide camera, and a standout 200MP Leica telephoto.

The telephoto uses a true 75mm to 100mm optical zoom system with moving lens groups and full sensor usage, avoiding digital crop. Leica APO certification further reduces chromatic aberration, while the UltraPure optical design helps control ghosting in complex lighting.

Outside the camera system, the phone features a flat LTPO display with up to 3500 nits brightness, runs on Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, packs a 6800mAh battery with 90W wired and 50W wireless charging, and supports Wi-Fi 7, UWB, and satellite communication.

According to Abhishek Yadav on X (formerly Twitter), Xiaomi may unveil the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra model in March 2026. So despite the Xiaomi 17 Ultra making its debut a couple of months earlier, the global release is still a while away.

In the tweet, the known tipster further added that a new Xiaomi 17T model is also arriving soon. Just recently, rumors surfaced of another Xiaomi 17 series phone, which features the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. While the details are still at large, the Xiaomi 17T could be this new model. Abhishek Yadav stated that his sources believe this device could arrive in India in April 2026. Although, the tipster did state that this is still unconfirmed, so take this report with a pinch of salt as well.

Based on what we know so far, the Xiaomi 17 is confirmed for an Indian release. Xiaomi’s new flagship just surfaced on the BIS certification database. The new Xiaomi 17 Ultra (hands-on) is making headlines as the company’s most ambitious phone yet. The Leica Edition takes things a step further with a Master Zoom Ring built on its rear camera. 

However, a few early users have noticed something odd. The zoom ring on the Leica Edition is loose and can be fiddled with quite easily when tapped.

Xiaomi has now clarified the situation, and the answer is more interesting than what you might expect. 

It’s intentional!

According to Xiaomi, fitting a mechanical zoom ring into the slim body of the 17 Ultra Leica Edition was no small feat. The Master Zoom Ring is built with a “sandwich” design made up of 26 independent parts. And as you might know, the higher the mechanical parts, the higher the chances for them to get damaged by a drop, debris, or liquid. 

So to make sure that the 17 Ultra Leica Edition passes all these ingress tests, Xiaomi says it gave the zoom ring a little allowable movement both radially and axially. That means when you shake the ring or tap it, it might shift slightly or even make a small sound. 

Xiaomi claims this behavior is normal and doesn’t affect the functionality of the zoom ring in any way. Not to forget, the phone still maintains its dust and water resistance ratings of IP66, IP68, and IP69.

Xiaomi also says the Master Zoom Ring went through multiple rounds of extreme tests, including drops, exposure to dust and water, high temperatures, high humidity, and continuous rotation. The goal was to ensure that even with the loose-feeling design, the mechanism remains durable and fully operational.

So, if you’re handling a 17 Ultra Leica Edition and the zoom ring jiggles a bit, it’s not a mistake or hardware defect; it’s just how Xiaomi engineered it.

The issue also does not appear to be the result of physical damage. Responding to a comment, @Devinarde said some Leica Edition buyers reported receiving units with a “shaky” or loose camera ring straight out of the box.

The complaint does not seem widespread, though. @Devinarde mentioned their Leica-branded unit feels firm, with no noticeable play in the ring. But for affected users, the issue undermines the premium feel of what is positioned as a photography-focused device.

Notably, the criticism isn’t about camera performance. Early reviews still praise the color science of this phone. Instead, the focus is on fit and finish—an area buyers expect any top-of-the-line flagship to get right.

For buyers outside China considering gray-market imports, this may be worth keeping in mind. Xiaomi is likely to address the issue in later production runs, but early retail stock could carry some risk. Inspecting the zoom ring immediately after delivery would be advisable, especially given limited return windows.

Several retailers are already shipping the Xiaomi 17 Ultra to Europe, including TradingShenzhen, Wondamobile, Trinity Electronics in Hong Kong, and Average Dad Shop in the UK and UAE. Most offer around one year of warranty coverage, with return policies that are far more restrictive than official EU channels.

Readers who have watched our review of the Xiaomi 15 Ultra may recall that the device left a rather underwhelming impression. The generational upgrades were modest, and the phone lacked truly distinctive features. After spending time with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, however, the reasoning behind that becomes clear: Xiaomi appears to have reserved its most ambitious efforts for this generation.

In this hands-on article, we begin with the unboxing experience before focusing on the key upgrades that define the Xiaomi 17 Ultra.

Unboxing

Much like the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra arrives in a flatter and elongated package compared to previous generations. The contents are identical to those of the Pro Max variant, including documentation, a SIM ejector tool, a transparent protective case, and a USB-A to USB-C cable.

Xiaomi also includes the same 100W charger, although it is worth noting that the handset itself supports up to 90W wired charging.

Telephoto With True Optical Zoom

When discussing smartphone optical zoom, Sony’s Xperia 1 series is often the first reference point. With the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, that benchmark may need to be reconsidered. The telephoto sensor on this device is more than twice the size of Sony’s equivalent, paired with a lens constructed from three glass elements and certified under Leica’s APO standards.

While extensive sample testing is still underway, early impressions strongly suggest that this may be the most capable optical zoom camera currently available on a smartphone. Zoom transitions are exceptionally smooth, image quality remains consistent across focal lengths, and—crucially—optical zoom is fully usable during video recording. This lossless zoom experience is both practical and rare. Although the 75–100mm range may appear limited on paper, it proves to be well-judged for real-world photography.

Beyond the telephoto lens, the rest of the camera system largely maintains the standard set by the 15 Ultra. The ultra-wide camera retains a 14mm focal length rather than shifting to a less versatile 17mm, while the new 1-inch main sensor now incorporates LOFIC technology. At this point, the hardware specification leaves little room for complaint.

Leica Special Edition: More Than Specifications

Had only the telephoto lens received meaningful upgrades, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra might still have felt incremental. What truly elevates the device is the introduction of the Leica Special Edition.

In a market where hardware differentiation has become increasingly narrow, emotional value and brand identity play a critical role. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica addresses this directly. For the first time, the iconic Leica red dot appears on a Xiaomi handset, accompanied by a rotating zoom ring, exclusive Leica engravings on the frame, and dedicated Leica color profiles.

The attention to detail extends to the accessories. The Leica edition includes an additional Leica-branded lens cap, a lanyard, and a cleaning cloth. The charging cable is upgraded to a braided design, while the custom phone case accommodates the rotating zoom ring and integrates magnets compatible with MagSafe accessories.

Remarkably, this special edition is priced at only around $71 more than the standard model. At this price difference, it feels less like an optional variant and more like the definitive version of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. For photography enthusiasts, it represents something closer to a pocketable Leica camera with genuine optical zoom rather than a conventional smartphone.

Other Upgrades

The remaining changes are more iterative in nature. With one camera removed from the array, the camera module is marginally smaller, contributing to a slight reduction in overall thickness. The circular volume buttons remain unchanged—hardly a functional upgrade, but a subtle design refresh nonetheless. There is still no dedicated camera control button on the frame, and the photography kit continues to omit a teleconverter.

As expected, the chipset has been updated to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Given the early release timing, concerns about near-term obsolescence are minimal. The display matches that of the 17 Pro Max: a large, flat panel with a specialized pixel arrangement designed to balance sharpness and power efficiency.

Battery capacity stands at 6,800mAh, paired with 90W wired and 50W wireless charging. While not as extreme as the Pro Max configuration, it is more than sufficient for demanding daily use. Ultimately, this is Xiaomi’s most powerful smartphone to date—and easily the most compelling the company has produced so far.

Conclusion

To the best of our knowledge, until at least 2027, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra stands alone as the only smartphone combining a 1-inch main sensor with a telephoto camera capable of true optical zoom. Its imaging strategy diverges sharply from other “Ultra” flagships currently on the market.

Regardless of how the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is ultimately judged in long-term testing, the Leica Special Edition delivers a level of emotional appeal unmatched by its peers. In the coming weeks, we will share our real-world experience along with a full set of sample images during the New Year period.

Unlike conventional OLED panels that rely on a PenTile sub-pixel arrangement, TCL CSOT’s Real RGB layout assigns a dedicated red, green, and blue sub-pixel to every pixel. It also improves text sharpness and overall image clarity, making the panel appear as sharp as a traditional 2K display without the visual compromises found in most OLEDs.

According to TCL Central, the new display reaches a luminous efficiency of 82.1 cd/A, allowing it to maintain high brightness levels with lower power consumption. The use of Real RGB combined with a power-efficient LTPO backplane results in up to 26% energy savings compared to previous display generations.

The Real RGB display was first introduced on the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max earlier this year. The 17 Pro Max also debuted a 2.9-inch rear AMOLED screen, while the 17 Ultra removes the secondary display to focus on camera performance. Xiaomi optimized the Ultra’s display to support LOFIC HDR, allowing it to accurately reproduce the dynamic range captured by the device’s 1-inch sensor.

Xiaomi and TCL CSOT have expanded their cooperation since establishing a strategic partnership in 2017. Xiaomi has just launched the much-anticipated Xiaomi 17 Ultra in China. Speculation is rife that its global journey may begin soon, as its overseas variants have received approval in multiple countries, including India, Thailand, and Singapore.

As can be seen above, the Indian variants of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Xiaomi 17, with respective model numbers 2512BPNDAI and 25113PN0EI, have been approved by India’s BIS authority.

The above screenshots show that both phones, carrying model numbers 2512BPNDAG and 25113PN0EG, respectively, have also been certified by the NBTC authority in Thailand.

Singapore’s IMDA authority approved the standard Xiaomi 17 back in October. The above screengrab shows that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s two variants, with model numbers 2512BPNDAG and 25128PNA1G, have been certified by the IMDA certification platform. While the 2512BPNDAG is the regular Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the 25128PNA1G is believed to be the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition.

Xiaomi Group VP and CMO Xu Fei recently confirmed that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will be released globally in 2026. However, the official timeframe has yet to be confirmed. Rumors surrounding the global launch of the Xiaomi 17 series suggest that it could debut in March 2026.

Reports also indicate that the global versions of the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra will feature smaller batteries than their Chinese counterparts. While the Xiaomi 17’s Chinese edition packs a 5,400mAh battery, its global version may come with a 5,240mAh battery. Similarly, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra sold in China houses a 6,800mAh battery, whereas its global edition may include a 6,000mAh battery.

What about the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max? Reports suggest that these devices may not launch in markets outside of China.

But even before the device was shipped to the early buyers, resellers had already listed the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition on second hand selling platform. So people have pre-ordered this model and plan to resell it immediately after the company starts shipping this flagship phone. Xiaomi has officially launched its latest flagship, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, at an event in China. Alongside the standard version, Xiaomi also introduced a special Leica Edition featuring exclusive hardware and design elements.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra Specifications

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra features a 6.9-inch M10 OLED LTPO flat display with a resolution of 2608 × 1200 pixels and 420 PPI, approaching 2K clarity. The screen reaches a peak brightness of 3,500 nits, supports HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and has an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate.

It offers DC dimming, 1920Hz PWM dimming, and is protected by Xiaomi Ceramic Glass 2.0. For eye comfort, the device features TÜV Rheinland triple eye-protection certification and full RGB pixel layout.

The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The chipset includes two ultra-large 4.6GHz Oryon cores, six 3.62GHz performance cores, and an Adreno 840 GPU with 18MB cache. The mid-frame includes precision-machined knurling that replicates the tactile feel of Leica lens rings. It also features a unique Master Zoom Ring built into the frame, giving users mechanical control over key photography parameters such as focal length, white balance, and exposure.

Xiaomi claims the setup covers equivalent focal lengths from 75mm to 100mm, which puts it squarely in the portrait and mid-range zoom range.

Xiaomi published side-by-side telephoto samples taken at 85mm, 90mm, and 100mm focal lengths, which effectively showcase its 3x-4.3x continuous optical zoom. Xiaomi did not name the other two phones used for comparison, for obvious reasons.

In a previous teaser, the company mentioned its “LOFIC ultra-high dynamic range technology,” and the 85mm and 90mm samples suggest Xiaomi was not exaggerating its claims. Overall, Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s brightness and color reproduction appear more consistent than the other two phones used in the test.

Xiaomi also shared a handful of low-light portrait shots taken with the telephoto camera. In these, subject separation looks clean, there is little to no visible noise, and the skin tone looks fairly natural.

These teaser image samples published through official channels are supposed to be carefully taken and hand-picked, but they still showcase what exactly the phone can do in skilled hands. As for the improvements on top of the 15 Ultra, we’ll need to test the two phones side-by-side once we get access to the 17 Ultra.

Together, the teasers suggest Xiaomi is positioning the 17 Ultra as one of its strongest camera phones yet, and a serious contender among the top camera flagships expected in 2026.

Xiaomi has shared another official teaser for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, this time offering a first look at the phone’s front design. The teaser also appears to confirm an additional color option that had not been shown before.

The video was posted by Xiaomi President Lu Weibing It features a brief hands-on look at the upcoming flagship, set to launch on December 25. Until now, Xiaomi had only shown photo and video samples highlighting the imaging capability of the phone. The new clip finally shows the device from the front.

From the footage, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is confirmed to measure 8.29mm in thickness. It appears to feature slim and fairly even bezels on all four sides. The display looks nearly edge-to-edge, with flat sides and rounded corners. Xiaomi has not revealed the width of the bezels, so it’s yet to be confirmed whether they are narrower as compared to the predecessor.

The hands-on video also shows the phone in different colors under real-world lighting. Xiaomi had previously teased three color options, but this latest teaser reveals what looks like a fourth variant. The newly spotted color appears to be a violet or purple tone. It will certainly be an eye-catching option many people.

The previously teased Starry Green finish is also shown more clearly. The video highlights a shimmering texture that shifts under light. The remaining colors appear more understated but still polished.

As the company’s camera-focused flagship, it features upgraded Leica-tuned imaging system, though Xiaomi has yet to confirm full specifications.
