Xiaomi’s Malaysia branch has just given out a bunch of powerbanks to reporters. In an interesting move, the Chinese tech giant handed out free 20,000mAh powerbanks to the media personnel standing outside Istana Negara.

The company shared various images on its official Facebook page, where Xiaomi officials can be seen giving out the large 20,000mAh powerbanks in large boxes to the reporters standing outside. And in a thoughtful manner, the company even shared a small note alongside it. The note said that “You cover the news, we got you covered! From Xiaomi Malaysia.”

This move was highly applauded on social media and the reporters themselves. The media reporters arrived with smartphones (with some exclusively relying on it) and other photography tools, which can run out of battery after continuous use. Thus, the massive capacity on the powerbank would ensure no one faces inconveniences during their working hours on the field.

The Xiaomi Malaysia officials wore orange Tshirts and can be seen walking around with large boxes filled with the powerbanks. They handed out the gadget for free. This has been seen as a sense of aiding position from Xiaomi as the reporters in the country have been facing troubles due to the ongoing political crisis that has gripped the region.

Sometimes I wonder how many projects are going on at the same time at Xiaomi’s RD lab. This week, they’ve launched two products, the Luo Qing Umbrella and the Xiaomi Mi VR Play.

Yesterday, they posted a teaser image of another upcoming product on their Weibo page which is set to launch by 2:00 pm  on Monday, 8th of August.

The teaser image shows 3 power banks standing vertically beside each other (bird’s eye view) or on their sides with USB cables on the the left and right. The power banks are the 5,000mAh, 10,000mAh Pro, and 20,000mAh types judging from the way the buttons and ports are placed.

Now we can translate this to mean that they are working on a new power bank (maybe one that has a capacity of all three combined) or like speculations online, a UPS. We can only guess what the product is, but one thing we are sure of is that it has to do with power.

A couple of days back, we had spotted the Xiaomi 20,000mAh Mi Powerbank. Now, Xiaomi has made this high-capacity powerbank official.

The 20,000mAh Mi powerbank comes with a special scratch proof body to ensure its durability. If you have used the previous powerbanks from the company, after a while, you would have seen a lot of scratches on it. To solve this issue, this particular device comes with a special textured body. There’s six high-density batteries from LG/ Panasonic taking the total capacity up to 20,000mAh.

The powerbank comes with two USB outputs which can charge devices pretty quickly, thanks to support for Quick Charge 2.0. This means that the devices connected to the powerbank can charge at (5V / 2A, 9V / 2A, 12V / 1.5A) with a maximum wattage of 18W. Given its large size, the 20,000mAh Mi powerbank will take about 5 hours to charge completely.

It can charge Mi 4 up to 4.5 times, iPhone 6 for 7 times, iPad Mini for 3 times and Macbook for 1.2 times. That’s not at all bad considering that the powerbank costs just 149 Yuan ($23).
