The Xiaomi Civi was announced today in China. Other than its stunning design and build, the specifications of the smartphone are no different from what we have seen from a lot of other upper mid-range devices. However, there is one thing that the Civi has in common with other Xiaomi flagships released this year.

Just like the Xiaomi 11 series, the Xiaomi Civi does not come with a charger included in the box. As seen in early unboxing videos, the Xiaomi Civi comes in a slim box with a thickness similar to that of the Mi 11 series. Inside the box is the phone, a clear TPU case, and the usual documents.

This is the first non-flagship Xiaomi phone that isn’t shipping with a charger included in the box. However, it appears Xiaomi is sending reviewers a power adapter with the phone. The poster above also states that those who purchase the phone will get an optional 55W GaN charger in a separate pack just as Xiaomi did with the Xiaomi Mi 11.

The Xiaomi Civi has a 6.53-inch curved AMOLED screen with a centered punch hole and a 120Hz refresh rate. There is a 32MP camera behind the cut-out in the screen and an in-display fingerprint scanner in the bottom half.

Powering the Xiaomi Civi is the Snapdragon 778G processor and it is paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of non-expandable storage. The main rear camera is a 64MP sensor and it is paired with an 8MP ultrawide angle camera and a 2MP macro camera.

Under the glass body is a 4500mAh battery with support for 55W fast charging just like the Mi 11. There is dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, infrared blaster, and dual-SIM support. Xiaomi ships the phone with MIUI 12.5 based on Android 11.

The Mi 11 has gone on sale in China already and the flagship phone is the first from the manufacturer to not ship with a charger and USB cable in the box. However, Xiaomi has provided another option for buyers to get these accessories at no extra cost. Now, it appears some buyers have found a way to get the charger for practically free without purchasing the phone.

If you choose the bundle that comes with a charger and cable, you get a 55W Xiaomi GaN charger which costs ¥99 (~$15) if you were to purchase it separately. According to the Chinese online publication, MyDrivers, some buyers have figured out that they can get the charger for just ¥0.01 (~$0.0015) without having to hold on to the phone.

Apparently, when you select the Set Edition which is what the bundle with the accessories is called, the checkout page lists the order as two separate items. As seen in the image above, the buyer chose to purchase the 8+256GB Set Edition which is priced at ¥4299 (~$658) but at checkout, it is listed as two separate items – the phone itself has a ¥4298.99 price tag and the 55W GaN charger has a ¥0.01 (~$0.0015) price tag.

Some buyers have decided to take advantage of this listing format to order for the Set Edition, then return the phone while holding on to the charger. So when they get refunded, they get the money for the phone which is ¥4298.99 while holding on to the charger which they practically got for less than a Yuan.

Seeing as the phone just went on sale on Friday, we do not think that any of the buyers that decided to return their orders have gotten a refund yet so we cannot verify the info. Some are of the opinion that it is not possible to return the phone without returning the charger since it is a set while others hold the opinion that the full price of the charger will be deducted, so the buyer gets a refund of ¥4200 instead of ¥4298.99. The latter doesn’t seem possible since the phone doesn’t have a price tag of ¥4200.

Yesterday, Xiaomi went oifficial with the Mi 11 flagship with the device adopting a decent starting price of 3999 yuan (~$612). One of the major highlight of the announcement was the disclosure that the standard edition won’t ship with a charging adapter in the retail box. To make up for the gap, Xiaomi has officially released a 55W GaN charger. The charging adapter is priced at 99 yuan and is presently on reservation on JD.com. The adapter will be officially released at 0:00 on January 1.

Just like other GaN chargers in the market, Xiaomi’s 55W GaN charger is manufactured using gallium nitride semiconductors. The use of gallium nitride semiconductor materials has the advantages of super thermal conductivity, high-temperature resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and greatly reduces the size of the charger.

The Xiaomi 55W GaN charger can provide 55W fast charging for the Mi 11, as well as fast charging support for the Mi 10 (30W), Redmi K30 Pro (33W), Redmi K30 5G (30W), etc. The original intention is to support environmental protection.

Xiaomi offers the Mi 11 in two options: a standard version and a package version. The package version is equipped with a 55W GaN charger. The price is the same as the standard version at 3999 yuan (~$612) for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage.

Xiaomi pegs the reason for the removal of the adapter from the standard version to the need to protect the environment. This is the same reason Apple gave for shipping the iPhone 12 without an adapter. However, Xiaomi already has some chargers that are compatible with the Mi 11 like the Mi 10 Pro and Mi 10 Extreme Edition charger.  There is also a Mi 65w GaN charger already in the market which can also deliver 55W charge to the Mi 11.
