<p>Xiaomi is no stranger to the world of innovation, consistently pushing the boundaries of smartphone design and functionality. One of their latest achievements involves receiving authorization for a foldable mobile phone appearance patent, which promises a unique and groundbreaking design for their future devices. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Xiaomi&#8217;s Innovative Foldable Mobile Phone Design Receives Patent Authorization</strong></h2>

<p>The patent, filed by Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software, was recently authorized by the State Intellectual Property Office. This new foldable mobile phone, designed primarily for mobile communication, camera, network, and multimedia applications, brings a fresh perspective to the foldable smartphone market. The design&#8217;s key feature is its distinctive shape, which sets it apart from other foldable devices currently available.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="368" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1024x368.webp?x96852" alt="Xiaomi Foldable phone patent" class="wp-image-528531" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1024x368.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-300x108.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-768x276.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-696x250.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1068x384.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1169x420.webp 1169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent.webp 1233w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>According to the patent images, the upper half of the phone screen can be folded back onto the rear, effectively converting the front camera into a rear camera after folding. This innovative design allows for seamless transitioning between front and rear cameras, eliminating the need for a separate rear camera module and potentially making the device more compact.</p>

<p>While the patent images provide a glimpse of what the foldable phone might look like, it is important to note that this design has not yet been seen on the market. This new folding screen form has the potential to revolutionize the foldable smartphone industry and further cement Xiaomi&#8217;s reputation as an innovator in the technology space.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1-1024x576.jpg?x96852" alt="Xiaomi Foldable phone patent" class="wp-image-528532" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/xiaomis-foldable-phone-patent-1.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>It remains uncertain whether this patented design will make its way into production and ultimately end up in consumers&#8217; hands. However, it is clear that Xiaomi continues to push the envelope when it comes to smartphone design, and this latest patent authorization is yet another testament to their commitment to innovation.</p>

The phone was the company&#8217;s first attempt at this emerging form factor and did a pretty decent job of delivering a foldable experience. However, the phone was not perfect, with a visible crease on the internal display as well as an unusual resolution on both the foldable and cover displays. Not to mention the phone was really thick at 17.2mm in its foldable state.</p>
<p>More than a year later, the brand is out with a new generation of foldable, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2. The phone improves on basically every aspect of its predecessor, now coming in a compact form factor with the same sized displays, better resolution matching industry standards, and the latest Qualcomm processor.</p>
<p>So let&#8217;s take a look at the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 vs Xiaomi Mix Fold comparison and see how much of an upgrade the new device brings to the table.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>SPECS TABLE</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3><strong>Design</strong></h3>
<p>The<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mix-fold-2/"> Mix Fold 2</a> and the Mix Fold come with similar-sized displays on the outside as well as the inside. However, what&#8217;s commendable is that the dimensions on the new model have slimmed down considerably.</p>
<p>The Mix Fold 2 measures 161.1 x 144.7 x 5.4mm in its unfolded, open state which is way more compact than the Fold&#8217;s dimensions of 173.3 x 133.4 x 7.6 mm. Even in its folded state, the previous generation model is wider and slimmer (161.1 x 73.9 x 11.2mm vs 173.3 x 69.8 x 17.2mm). Finally, the weight has also reduced drastically from the Mix Fold&#8217;s 332 grams to a Galaxy Fold4-like 262g weight on the Mix Fold 2.</p>
<p>You don&#8217;t have a ceramic option like the original Mix Fold model but given the considerable drop in weight, it might be for the better. The wider profile of the cover display definitely makes it feel like a regular smartphone, unlike the narrow display on the original Fold.</p>
<p>Overall, when it comes to the form factor, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is miles ahead of the Mix Fold, with lighter, slimmer, and industry-standard sizing.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Display</strong></h3>
<p>Despite its reduced form factor, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 boasts almost the exact same screen size as its predecessor. On the outside, the phone features a 120Hz HDR10+ 8-inch 1914 x 2160 pixel resolution display (LTPO2) with school UTG glass. The cover screen comes with a 6.56-inch 120Hz panel with a 21:9 aspect ratio and HDR10+. As you can see, these resolutions are very close to standard smartphone resolutions, making it very easy to adjust to its unique form factor.</p>
<p>In comparison, the original Mix Fold comes with the same screen sizes on the front and the back with both featuring HDR10+ and Dolby Vision screens. However, its foldable display features a resolution of 1860 x 2480 pixels while the cover display features an even weirder resolution of 840 x 2520 pixels which translates to a 27:9 ratio. Note that the cover display is limited to 90Hz resolutions as compared to 120Hz on the Mix Fold 2.<br />
Both foldables feature a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Specs &amp; Software</strong></h3>
<p>The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 gets the biggest update in the processor department, featuring the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 chip, which is faster and more efficient than the one found inside the original Mi Mix Fold. To recall, the original Fold comes with the Snapdragon 888 chip, which was the flagship SoC of 2021.</p>
<p>Xiaomi went all out in terms of memory configuration for its original foldable. The phone came with up to 512GB ROM and 16GB of RAM. On the other hand, the new Mix Fold 2 maxes out at 12GB RAM but with up to 1TB of storage.</p>
<p>In terms of software, the Mix Fold 2 runs on the newer Android 12-based MIUI Fold 13 OS. The original Mix Fold started off with Android 10-based MIUI 12. But it is expected to receive MIUI 13 in the coming months. Both phones have features tweaked to take full advantage of their foldable form factor. While the original Mix Fold started off with limited foldable UI tweaks, subsequent updates have added a bunch of foldable-specific features to the device.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Camera</strong></h3>
<p>Both foldables have good camera setups. However, the new Mix Fold 2 brings Leica-based optimizations to its camera module. The Mix Fold 2 starts off with a 50MP f/1.8 primary camera featuring OIS, another 8MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, and a 13MP Ultra Wide shooter.</p>
<p>The original Mix had an even larger resolution primary camera, a 108MP shooter paired with a telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and the same 13MP Ultra Wide shooter as the Mix Fold 2.</p>
<p>On the front, both generations feature the same 20MP selfie camera.</p>
<p>While the Mix Fold 2 features a solid camera setup, powered by a new chip that should enable better image processing, the original Mix Fold&#8217;s camera setup is actually pretty good too. Only a real-life comparison would help us identify the better cameras among these two phones.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Battery</strong></h3>
<p>Surprisingly, the original Mix Fold had a larger battery than the new generation model. It featured a 5000mAh battery with 67W fast charging, which is the same charging speed as found on the new Mix Fold 2. However, the new generation model reduces the battery capacity to 4500mAh, likely due to its slimmer and lighter profile.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, both phones lack wireless charging support, unlike the Galaxy Z Fold series.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Price</strong></h3>
<p>Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 starts around 8,999 yuan (~$1,335) for the base 256GB storage., while Xiaomi Mix Fold can be bought<a href="https://www.giztop.com/xiaomi-mi-mix-fold.html"> as low as $1000</a> right now. Given that the Xiaomi foldable is a brand new device, it&#8217;s pretty expensive to buy globally and retails for around <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/08/15/get-50-off-on-xiaomi-mix-fold-2-at-giztop-coupon/">$1700 via Giztop</a>.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no doubt that the Mix Fold 2 is a way superior foldable, even one of the best options for a foldable in the 2022 market. However, it does come at a cost internationally, and if you can get the original Mix Fold for less than $1000, it might actually be a tempting offer.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

While the first generation model from the brand receivedan  average response, the company is likely hoping its second generation model, with a slimmer and more premium-looking design profile, manages to catch everyones attention.</p>
<p>We have already compared the two main flagships of 2022 &#8211; the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/08/18/xiaomi-mix-fold-2-vs-samsung-galaxy-z-fold4-specs-comparison/">Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 vs the Galaxy Z Fold4</a>. But there are multiple options for foldables in the Chinese market like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-find-n-5g/">OPPO Find N</a> which received a lot of media attention a few months back. So we thought it would be a good idea to compare the new Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 vs the OPPO Find N in this article.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a quick specs comparison between two slim foldables available in the market in 2022.</p>

<h3></h3>
<h3><strong>Design</strong></h3>
<p>The two foldables adopt a different approach when it comes to their designs. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 comes with a much larger screen and consequently larger dimensions. However, it&#8217;s both thinner and lighter than the OPPO Find N, and by a considerable margin.<br />
If we directly compare the dimensions, the Mix Fold 2 (161.1 x 144.7 x 5.4mm) is both taller and wider than the OPPO Find N (132.6 x 140.2 x 8.0mm). However, the Xiaomi foldable compensates for its larger dimensions with a much thinner profile (5.4mm unfolded and 11.2 mm folded vs 8mm unfolded and 15.9mm folded on the Find N). What&#8217;s also interesting is that the outer display on the Mix Fold 2 is wider than the Find N, putting it much closer to our standard smartphone displays.</p>
<p>As for their weights, the Mix Fold 2 weighs 262gms vs 275gms of the OPPO model.<br />
Even their design philosophies are different. While the Mix Fold 2 comes with a boxier design with sharper corners (like the old Galaxy Note series), the Find N comes with rounded corners with a curvier profile.</p>
<p>Since both the phones feature an inward folding design, the final choice in this department would boil down to your personal preference. If you want a compact design with a curvier profile, go for the Find N, but if you want a foldable that&#8217;s slim and features a larger screen like a tablet, go for the Mix Fold 2.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Display</strong></h3>
<p>Owing to the larger dimensions of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, it boasts a much larger screen too. On the outside, it comes with a 120Hz HDR10+ 8-inch 1914 x 2160 pixel resolution display (LTPO2) with Schott UTG glass. As for the cover display, it has a 6.56-inch panel, again with 120Hz, 21:9 aspect ratio, and HDR10+, making it very close to our standard smartphone screen size.</p>
<p>In comparison, the OPPO Find N features a 7.1-inch foldable display with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+. But on paper, this LTP0 display is less bright than the Mix model. Also, the cover display is pretty compact at 5.46-inches with 988 x 1972 pixels resolution and does not feature a high refresh rate.</p>
<p>Clearly, the Mix Fold 2 outdoes the OPPO Find N in the display department, which isn&#8217;t surprising given that it&#8217;s a fairly new device.</p>
<p>Both foldables come with side-mounted fingerprint sensors.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Specs &amp; Software</strong></h3>
<p>The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is a 2022 smartphone and this is evident in its specifications. The biggest update to the device is in the processor department, now featuring the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 chip, which is way faster and more efficient than the one found inside the Find N mode. The OPPO foldable is powered by the Snapdragon 888 running at a max frequency of 2.84 GHz.</p>
<p>As for their memory configuration, the Mix 2 Fold maxes out at 1TB ROM and 12GB of RAM while the Find N has a max configuration of 512GB ROM and 12GB RAM.</p>
<p>In the software department, the Mix Fold 2 runs on the newer Android 12-based MIUI Fold 13 OS. In comparison, the OPPO Find N is still running on Android 11 (customized by ColorOS 12). But it is worth adding that the Find N did get support for the Android 13 beta update and is expected to receive the new<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/08/09/oppo-confirms-color-os-13-global-launch-august-18/)"> ColorOS 13 stable update</a> in the coming months.</p>
<p>Both phones have features tweaked to take full advantage of their foldable form factor.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Camera</strong></h3>
<p>Both the foldables have pretty good camera setups. The Mix Fold 2 comes with a 50MP f/1.8 primary camera with OIS, another 8MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, and a 13MP Ultra wide shooter. Note that these cameras are Leica optimized like its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/07/11/xiaomi-12s-ultra-full-review-1-inch-sensor-with-leica-color-science/">12S series</a>.<br />
Similarly, the OPPO Find N comes with a 50 MP Sony IMX766 main camera, a 13 MP telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom, and a 16 MP ultrawide camera. The Xiaomi foldable features a 20MP selfie camera while the OPPO Find N has two amazing 32 MP front cameras: one on the internal display and another one on the external panel.</p>
<p>Only a real-life camera comparison between the two phones will reveal if either of them has an advantage in the camera department. That said, both phones have pretty solid camera setups.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Battery</strong></h3>
<p>In the battery department, the two foldables feature the same 4500mAh capacity batteries. However, the Mix Fold 2 comes with a faster 67W wired charging. On the other hand, the Find N has a slower 33W charging support, but adds 15W wireless and reverse wireless charging support.</p>
<p>The wireless charging support justifies the thicker profile of the OPPO Foldable and having a feature like this would give it an advantage over the Mix foldable, despite its faster wired charging speeds.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Price</strong></h3>
<p>Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 starts around 8,999 yuan (~$1,335) for the base 256GB storage, while the starting price tag of the OPPO Find N roughly translates into €1070/$1210. Given that the Xiaomi foldable is a brand new device, it&#8217;s pretty expensive to buy globally and retails for around <strong><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/08/15/get-50-off-on-xiaomi-mix-fold-2-at-giztop-coupon/">$1700 via Giztop</a></strong>. On the other hand, the OPPO Find N retail for a much cheaper price tag globally<strong> <a href="https://www.giztop.com/oppo-find-n.html">at around $1299</a></strong>.<br />
If you are ready to shell out more for a top-end foldable, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 would be a good choice. However, the OPPO Find N is also a pretty competitive foldable, despite being older, and can save a significant amount of your money if you get it right now.</p>

Just yesterday, a device said to be the foldable phone was <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/03/18/378189-possible-xiaomi-foldable-m2011j18c-smartphone-china-3c/">spotted on the 3C website</a>. In a related development, alleged spy photos of the Mi foldable phone have been spotted on Weibo.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_378436" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-378436" style="width: 767px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-378436" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix.jpg?x96852" alt="Xiaomi foldable Mi Mix" width="767" height="1024" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix.jpg 767w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-696x929.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-315x420.jpg 315w" sizes="(max-width: 767px) 100vw, 767px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-378436" class="wp-caption-text">Xiaomi foldable Mi Mix</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>The photos seem to have been pulled down but a tipster Nils Ahrensmeier from TechnikNews was able to grab some shots and posted them on Twitter. The photos bear semblance with earlier photos that leaked earlier this year. The images tout a design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The new images give a look at the rear aspect which shows the presence of the &#8220;Mix&#8221; branding.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-2.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-378437" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-2.jpg?x96852" alt="Xiaomi foldable" width="939" height="1528" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-2.jpg 939w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-2-184x300.jpg 184w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-2-768x1250.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-2-629x1024.jpg 629w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-2-696x1133.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-2-258x420.jpg 258w" sizes="(max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px" /></a></p>
<p>In line with the design of the Xiaomi foldable spotted in multiple leaks, the foldable Mi Mix will utilize an in-folding design just like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold2-5g/">Galaxy Z Fold 2</a>. Recall that Huawei just shifted to an in-folding design on the recently launched <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/22/huawei-mate-x2-arrives-with-a-new-folding-design-90hz-displays-leica-cameras-and-a-high-price-tag/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mate X2</a>.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix3.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-378438" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix3.jpg?x96852" alt="" width="804" height="1431" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix3.jpg 804w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix3-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix3-768x1367.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix3-575x1024.jpg 575w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix3-696x1239.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix3-236x420.jpg 236w" sizes="(max-width: 804px) 100vw, 804px" /></a></p>
<p>In addition to the &#8220;Mix&#8221; branding, the device is also shown to come with a triple-camera setup at the rear stacked in a vertical orientation. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-4.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-378439" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-4.jpg?x96852" alt="" width="640" height="830" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-4.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-4-231x300.jpg 231w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-mix-4-324x420.jpg 324w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p>Unfortunately, the internal screen of the foldable phone wasn&#8217;t featured in the leak and so we can&#8217;t tell how it looks like. However, we doubt if there will be a selfie camera at the front. What we can say is that the company may have found a better way to deal with the crease <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/05/xiaomi-foldable-smartphone-patent-crease/">as per a recently leaked patent</a>.</p>

<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>We can&#8217;t say when the Chinese tech giant will release this model. Xiaomi last launched a model under the MIX series in 2019 when the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-mix-3">Mi Mix 3</a> was unveiled. Since then, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/10/xiaomi-mi-mix-alpha-is-ready-for-mass-production/">Mix Alpha concept model</a> was unveiled. However, the company is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/25/xiaomi-to-launch-foldable-phone-soon-in-2021-three-kinds-of-foldable-expected/">reportedly</a> planning to launch foldable models this year.</p>

Right from a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/27/xiaomis-foldable-smartphone-features-in-official-video-teaser/">prototype video</a> showcased in early 2019, the company&#8217;s first foldable device has triggered quite a lot of expectations. This year, it is finally going to launch <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/25/xiaomi-to-launch-foldable-phone-soon-in-2021-three-kinds-of-foldable-expected/">up to three such devices</a> according to reports. And one of those might have just appeared on China&#8217;s 3C certification.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_365595" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-365595" style="width: 603px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-365595 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/xiaomi-foldable-23.png?x96852" alt="Xiaomi foldable" width="603" height="542" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/xiaomi-foldable-23.png 603w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/xiaomi-foldable-23-300x270.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/xiaomi-foldable-23-467x420.png 467w" sizes="(max-width: 603px) 100vw, 603px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-365595" class="wp-caption-text">Alleged Xiaomi foldable spotted in the wild</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>A Xiaomi smartphone with model number M2011J18C appears on the 3C certification authority website. If you recall, this device, likely a foldable smartphone, had appeared on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/26/xiaomi-m2011j18c-foldable-phone-receives-tenaa-certification-in-china/">TENAA certification</a> last month.</p>
<p>A few reports have said that the company would bring this <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/03/05/xiaomi-patents-foldable-phone-mi-mix-series/">device under the Mi MIX series</a> but that&#8217;s not confirmed yet. In that report, it was mentioned that the device would come with a 67W Wired Fast charging support.</p>
<p>In line with that, the 3C certification of the M2011J18C shows that the device can charge up to a maximum of 20V at 3.25A~65W. Apart from this, the listing shows that it supports 5G connectivity.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-378210 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Xiaomi_M2011J18C_3C_certification.png?x96852" alt="xiaomi foldable m2011j18c 3C" width="1724" height="199" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Xiaomi_M2011J18C_3C_certification.png 1724w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Xiaomi_M2011J18C_3C_certification-300x35.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Xiaomi_M2011J18C_3C_certification-768x89.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Xiaomi_M2011J18C_3C_certification-1024x118.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Xiaomi_M2011J18C_3C_certification-696x80.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Xiaomi_M2011J18C_3C_certification-1068x123.png 1068w" sizes="(max-width: 1724px) 100vw, 1724px" /></p>
<p>So far, reports say that the device would adopt <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/03/10/xiaomis-first-foldable-phone-will-reportedly-use-a-galaxy-fold-2-like-hinge-design/">Galaxy Z Fold2 like hinge</a> design hinting at an inward folding display. The device is expected to feature and a display of around 7-inches with a 120Hz refresh rate.</p>
<p>Other expected features include a flagship Snapdragon 888 chipset, 108MP camera, 5,000mAh battery, run <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/14/leaked-photos-of-the-xiaomi-foldable-screen-running-miui-12-emerges/">MIUI 12</a>, and more. Let&#8217;s wait for more concrete details which are sure to come out as the launch draws near.</p>

Also, the foldable device has got <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/26/xiaomi-m2011j18c-foldable-phone-receives-tenaa-certification-in-china/">certified by China&#8217;s TENAA</a> which is suggestive of an imminent launch. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-376338" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable.jpg?x96852" alt="Xiaomi foldable phone" width="600" height="530" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-300x265.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-475x420.jpg 475w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>The latest leak about the Mi foldable smartphone is from noted tipster Digital Chat Station. The tipster hinted on Weibo that the Xiaomi foldable will adopt an internal structural design similar to that of Samsung&#8217;s latest Galaxy Z Fold 2. This also includes the hinge design.</p>
<p>The vast majority of foldable phones presently in the market use one form of hinge design or the other to achieve the folding effect. The structure also supports the repeated folding movements of the flexible screen. However, the hinge is also a major flaw in the current foldable phones. It was a defect in the hinge design that affected the initial  Galaxy Z Fold, thus reducing the durability of the phone. The defective hinge led to dust particles getting into the phone.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-3.png?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-376340" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-3.png?x96852" alt="Xiaomi foldable phone" width="600" height="159" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-3.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-3-300x80.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>Apart from the hinge design, another important aspect is the folding style. In this regard, there is the in-folding and out-folding designs. Both orientations bring different usage methods and screen durability. Previous rumors already hinted that Xiaomi’s first foldable smartphone will adopt an in-folding design that can better protect the flexible display panel from wear and tear. Also, the main screen will not have any opening.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-2.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-376339" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-2.jpg?x96852" alt="Xiaomi foldable phone" width="600" height="399" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-2.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/xiaomi-foldable-2-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>According to reports, the Xiaomi foldable phone will use a foldable OLED panel supplied by Samsung, with a specific size of 8.03 inches. The phone will also be equipped with a 6.38-inch secondary screen at the rear.</p>
<p>Another reason why Xiaomi&#8217;s model is worth looking forward to is the pricing. Xiaomi may bring the device as the cheapest foldable phone around.</p>

<p><figure id="attachment_233549" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-233549" style="width: 720px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Xiaomi-Foldable-Phone-featured.png?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-233549 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Xiaomi-Foldable-Phone-featured.png?x96852" alt="" width="720" height="420" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Xiaomi-Foldable-Phone-featured.png 720w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Xiaomi-Foldable-Phone-featured-300x175.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-233549" class="wp-caption-text">Xiaomi&#8217;s foldable prototype was showcased by founder Lin Bin back in 2019</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>According to the new report, Xiaomi&#8217;s foldable smartphone will use flexible panels made by Samsung Display. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/01/29/xiaomi-using-visionox-amoled-panels-for-foldable-phone-development/">Visionox was supplying foldable panels to Xiaomi</a> initially but the yield was reportedly not enough to produce the panels in large quantities. So <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> is said to be in talks with Samsung Display to secure supply for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable">foldable</a> panels. However, the same report states that we might not see a foldable phone from Xiaomi this year.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s surprising is that Huawei is also reportedly shifting its foldable panel supplier this year. The report states that the telecommunications giant is already in the process of securing foldable panels for its smartphone from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-display">Samsung Display</a>. Its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Mate X</a> came with BOE&#8217;s foldable panels but Samsung Display&#8217;s panel reportedly has better quality and quantity. It is said that Huawei is likely to use Samsung Display as the primary supplier for its foldable, with BOE acting as an additional supplier.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-284886" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7.jpg?x96852" alt="huawei mate x" width="640" height="446" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7-300x209.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7-603x420.jpg 603w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p>The report also states that Huawei&#8217;s next-generation foldable smartphone will launch in the second half of the year alongside the second-generation Galaxy Fold model. This makes sense given how the Mate X2 is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/26/huawei-mate-x2-foldable-phone-to-arrive-in-q3-2020/">rumored to release sometime around IFA 2020</a>. The rumor also said that the X2 will be outward folding, similar to the Galaxy Fold.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>UP NEXT: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/02/huawei-opens-first-smart-unmanned-retail-store-in-china/">Huawei opens first smart unmanned retail store in China</a></strong></h6>
<p>Note that the new foldable smartphone expected at<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/23/huawei-mate-xs-a-mate-x-powered-by-the-kirin-990-5g-arrives-march-2020/"> MWC 2020 in February is the Mate XS</a>, a slightly modified version of the existing Mate X foldable, most likely using BOE&#8217;s foldable panel.</p>
<p>The recent success of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/">Galaxy Fold</a> seems to have boosted Samsung Display&#8217;s reputation in the market. It is said that the display maker received a lot of interest from top Chinese smartphone makers like OPPO, Vivo, &amp; Huawei but its initial focus is on supplying foldable panels to Samsung. After the launch of the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/26/samsung-galaxy-s11-and-galaxy-fold-rumored-to-launch-on-11th-february-2020/"> clamshell Galaxy Fold model sometime before MWC</a>, Samsung Display will focus on supplying panels for the Mate X2 and the second generation Galaxy Fold devices. In the meantime, it is likely to start supplying panels for the foldable smartphone from Xiaomi, expected to launch in 2021.</p>
<p>So it looks like Samsung and Huawei are likely to remain the top foldable smartphone makers, even in 2020.</p>

The phone is nothing like the smartphones we&#8217;ve ever seen before, making an all-screen design very close to reality. But we couldn&#8217;t help but notice that the Alpha is awfully similar to the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/foldable">foldable</a> Xiaomi prototype that featured a double folding design. Now, Xiaomi&#8217;s co-founder, Lin Bin has revealed why there are some similarities between the two.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_278598" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-278598" style="width: 696px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design-.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-278598" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design--1024x473.jpg?x96852" alt="Xiaomi foldable design" width="696" height="321" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design-.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design--300x139.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design--768x355.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design--696x321.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design--909x420.jpg 909w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-278598" class="wp-caption-text">Xiaomi&#8217;s foldable prototype features a dual folding design</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Lin Bin reveals that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-mix-alpha/">Mi Mix Alpha</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi&#8217;s</a> foldable that was teased earlier this year were developed in sync with each other. In fact, both the projects have been assigned internal codes in the same series. The two projects were developed simultaneously but the company could overcome the technical challenges associated with Mi Mix Alpha&#8217;s project recently which finally enabled them to carry out a small scale trial production.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-3.42.50-PM.png?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-278607" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-3.42.50-PM.png?x96852" alt="Lin Bin Mix Alpha and Xiaomi Foldable" width="599" height="330" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-3.42.50-PM.png 599w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-3.42.50-PM-300x165.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px" /></a></p>
<p>This makes sense because the Mi Mix Alpha looks like a permanently folded version of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/27/xiaomis-foldable-smartphone-features-in-official-video-teaser/">dual folding screen protoype revealed by Xiaomi back in March</a>. Lin Bin&#8217;s comment also confirms that the company is still working on the dual folding design. We can&#8217;t say when Xiaomi will officially release the handset but given how it managed to bring the Mix Alpha concept to reality, the foldable phone may not be very far off.</p>

<p>Still, both the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold-5g/"> Galaxy Fold</a> and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Mate X</a> foldable had to face numerous technical challenges before launch. The dual folding concept from Xiaomi looks really cool but it&#8217;s even more extreme than the single folding design used by both Samsung and Huawei&#8217;s foldable. So it remains to be seen if Xiaomi can bring the dual folding design to reality anytime soon.</p>
<p>The Galaxy Fold is already<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/03/galaxy-fold-goes-on-vip-pre-sale-in-south-korea/"> on sale in South Korea</a> and goes on sale in the US next week, with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/24/samsungs-galaxy-fold-is-heading-to-india-on-october-1/">a release expected on October 1 in India</a>. Even the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/25/huawei-mate-x-will-launch-in-october-confirms-official-huawei-support/">Mate X is finally going on sale in October</a>, at least in China, confirms Huawei&#8217;s support. As the technology matures for mass production, we can expect to see better implementations of the foldable design in the coming years. And Xiaomi&#8217;s foldable could be one of those designs that make it compact and practical.</p>

<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Mi-curved-screen.jpg?x96852'><img width="690" height="920" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Mi-curved-screen.jpg?x96852" class="attachment-large size-large" alt="Mi curved screen" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Mi-curved-screen.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Mi-curved-screen-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Mi-curved-screen-315x420.jpg 315w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a>
</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><em>Original Story as follows.</em></p>
<p>Xiaomi&#8217;s upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/17/xiaomi-mi-9-pro-5g-teased-in-dream-white-color-reservations-open-in-china/">Mi 9 Pro 5G has been teased quite well</a> over the past few days, however, we haven&#8217;t heard much about the second model meeting us next week, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/16/xiaomi-to-announce-mi-mix-5g-mi-9-pro-5g-miui-11-on-september-24/">the Mi Mix 5G</a>. Now a teaser of the Mi Mix 5G has been posted and it reveals something really interesting.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Mi-Mix-5G-concept-teaser.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-277350" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Mi-Mix-5G-concept-teaser.jpg?x96852" alt="Mi Mix 5G concept teaser" width="690" height="920" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Mi-Mix-5G-concept-teaser.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Mi-Mix-5G-concept-teaser-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Mi-Mix-5G-concept-teaser-315x420.jpg 315w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a></p>
<p>The new Mi Mix 5G teaser asks us &#8220;Is 100% screen to body ratio really the upper limit?&#8221;. If this doesn&#8217;t build up speculations about the phone being <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable">foldable</a>, then how about a <em>leaked</em> teaser image? A glimpse of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mi-mix-5g">Mi Mix 5G&#8217;s</a> side reveals extremely curved display sides. In fact, it looks even more curved than a waterfall display found on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/vivo-nex-3/">NEX3</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-30-pro-5g/">Mate 30 Pro</a>. Could this be an indication that the phone&#8217;s display folds inwards from the left?</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_277349" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-277349" style="width: 440px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mi-mix-5g-event-teaser.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-277349 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mi-mix-5g-event-teaser.jpg?x96852" alt="xiaomi mi mix 5g event teaser" width="440" height="667" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mi-mix-5g-event-teaser.jpg 440w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mi-mix-5g-event-teaser-198x300.jpg 198w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mi-mix-5g-event-teaser-277x420.jpg 277w" sizes="(max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-277349" class="wp-caption-text">Leaked poster of the Mi Mix 5G and Mi 9 Pro 5G</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>This speculation is actually not very far fetched. Xiaomi&#8217;s Mi Mix series <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2016/10/26/wondering-xiaomis-concept-phone-called-mix-heres-answer/">has always been a concept lineup</a> featuring new generation designs. And don&#8217;t you think that the phone in the teaser looks awfully similar to<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/27/xiaomis-foldable-smartphone-features-in-official-video-teaser/"> Xiaomi&#8217;s foldable smartphone</a> that was shown off a<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/01/23/xiaomis-foldable-smartphone-still-has-several-hurdles-to-cross-before-commercial-availability/"> few months back</a>? Imagine if that screen was folded, with the left and right sides of the display folded towards the back. Now, look at the leaked image of the Mi Mix 5G.</p>
<p><figure style="width: 600px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" src="http://img.cnmo-img.com.cn/1670_600x1000/1669484.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="193" /><figcaption class="wp-caption-text">Leaked image of the Mi Mix 5G</figcaption></figure></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>While a foldable Mi Mix 5G isn&#8217;t a far fetched idea, it&#8217;s also possible that this render is showing off a waterfall display like the NEX 3. Even in this leaked image, there&#8217;s a black outline at the back which could mean that the screen ends at the curved sides. Unfortunately, you can&#8217;t make accurate conclusions based on such renders as they often differ from the real device.</p>
<p>Whatever the case, we&#8217;ll get more details on the Mi Mix 5G in the next few days. Meanwhile, we already know that the Mi 9 Pro 5G will come with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/18/lei-jun-reveals-mi-9-pro-5g-charging-times-48-minutes-on-wired-69-minutes-on-wireless/">40W wired charging and 30W wireless charging</a> support. There&#8217;s also<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/19/mi-9-pro-5g-sd855-plus-vc-liquid-cooling/"> liquid cooling and powerful haptics</a>.</p>
