Xiaomi has rolled out stable global ROM of MIUI 9 to various smartphones like Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, Mi 6, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5, Mi Max 2, Redmi 4 and the newly unveiled Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite smartphones. At the unveil event of MIUI 9, the company had confirmed that the MIUI 9 will be made available to even older phones that were launched in 2012. Fresh information shared on the official forum site states that the MIUI 9 will be the last major update software update for some smartphones. The company has also confirmed the names of the devices for which it will be discontinuing support.

Xiaomi will be discontinuing support for smartphones such as Mi Note, Mi 2/2S, 4i, Redmi Note 4G, Redmi 2 and Redmi 2 Prime. It means that the company won’t be releasing closed or open beta after rolling out MIUI 9 update for these phones. The MIUI 9 global stable ROM for these six Xiaomi phones as well as Redmi 1S will be made available gradually between December 2017 and January 2018.

These six smartphones were launched in India in 2015 or earlier. Interestingly, the company will be continuing support for Xiaomi Mi 3 phone which happens to be the first smartphone from the company to debut in India.

According to Xiaomi, the MIUI 9 works like stock version of Android when it comes to speed and functionality. It is a customized version of Android Nougat that includes various new features such as split screen mode, smart app launcher, image search, search for apps in the settings for Dual apps, support for popular video formats in Mi Video app, and more. Xiaomi‘s Mi series is the company’s flagship models which usually come with one upgrade on the other. Right from time, Xiaomi has always improved on the series’ cameras right from the Mi 2 to the dual camera packing Mi 6. The Mi 6 isn’t the first dual camera phone manufactured by Xiaomi. It is, in fact, the company’s third dual camera smartphone but the phone has turned out to be the Xiaomi’s best dual camera flagship till date.

The Xiaomi Mi 2 was released in 2012 with a 4.3-inch display. Despte the size, the device featured an 8MP camera with f/2.0 aperture, autofocus, 27mm wide angle, back-illuminated CMOS and LED flash. The camera also features Geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, HDR and can shoot Full HD video 1080p@30fps. The Mi 2 also packs a smallish 2MP selfie camera  which can also capture 1080p videos at 30fps.

The Xiaomi Mi 3 quickly followed the Mi 2 and was introduced in 2013. The Mi 3 came with a more powerful 13MP ExmorRS main camera with f/2.2 aperture, 28mm wide angle, autofocus, dual-tone LED flash.  The camera also comes with features such as Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, HDR, Full HD video capture at 30fps. Xiaomi touted the Mi 3 camera as the first domestic mobile phone to support RAW format. The secondary camera is still a 2MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture which seems to suggest Xiaomi was focusing on the main camera during these years.

Xiaomi Mi 4 was announced in 2014, taking the rein over from the Mi 3. The sleek device is said to be the first Mi phone to feature real-time HDR and also touch focus. The Mi 4 packs a 13MP camera but with a smaller f/1.8 aperture. The Mi 4 also saw a huge leap from 2MP selfie camera to an 8MP selfie camera with f/1.8 aperture, signalling a shift towards better selfie cameras.

Xiaomi took things to another plane on the Mi 5 which feature a four-axis Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) found in professional cameras. The Mi 5 camera is a powerful 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture, dual-tone LED flash which the rear camera was reduced to a 4MP sensor for whatever reason best known to Xiaomi. The company spent two years before releasing the Mi 5 in 2016 and it was worth the wait.

Xiaomi released the Mi 5S also in 2015 and it also had some improvements in its cameras. The main camera is a powerful Sony IMX378 sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The Mi 5s also features a 4MP camera. The Mi 5S Plus was aso released with dual 13MP cameras at the rear and a similar 4MP sensor at the front.

Now, with the Xiaomi Mi 6 which also has a dual camera setup, the company have taken things to another level, using a similar setup as the iPhone 7 Plus, a 12MP wide angle lens, and a 12MP telephone lens. The two rear cameras on the Redmi Pro were far from impressive but the setup on the Mi 5S Plus turned out to be quite good. The two cameras at the back managed to capture good-looking images especially in broad daylight, but the real difference due to the dual cameras was seen in the low light images. The stereo mode helped take pretty good low light shots, better than previous generations. Indee, with the Mi 6, you get two times lossless zoom and also better shooting.

While Xiaomi was teasing the April 19 launch of the Mi 6 which has finally launched, one caption that kept recurring is “You waited 203 days, we waited 7 years”. The company apparently was referring to the period since its inception until now and perhaps, looking back at the evolution of the Mi-series which is Xiaomi’s flagship series, the Mi 6 seems to be the perfect flagship both in design and specs, the best in the pack so far. How true is that? Only a comprehensive review and time will give a definite answer to that. But we’ll take a look at the six generation of Mi-series flagship to see how the line has evolved right from the Mi 1 till the Mi 6.

Xiaomi Mi 1

The Xiaomi Mi 1 happens to be the first of Xiaomi’s Mi-series smartphones and indeed the company’s very first phone. The device was launched on August 16, 2011, and went up for sale in October of the same year. It comes with a Qualcomm MSM8260 (Snapdragon S2) processor with 1GB RAM backing it up. The Mi 1 features a 4-inch display with 854 x 480p resolution and runs MIUI 3 based on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread OS.Xiaomi launched a refreshed version called Mi 1s a while later with a slightly faster processor and MIUI ROM based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Further, the Mi 1 packs an 8MP rear camera and a 1930mAh battery. It launched with a price of 1,999 Yuan (~$217), a price tag Xiaomi will maintain for successive devices until the Mi 6.

Xiaomi Mi 2

The Xiaomi Mi 2 came a year later, precisely on August 16, 2012. The Mi 2 came with a slightly larger and powerful 4.3-inch HD display. It also features a Qualcomm APQ8064 (Snapdragon S4 Pro) Quad core processor backed by 2GB of RAM. The Mi 2 sports an 8MP camera but runs MIUI 4 based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The battery was slightly upgraded to 2000mAh capacity. The Mi 2S was later released the following year with a  slightly faster processor and 32GB storage variant with a 13MP rear camera. Despite the upgrade over the Mi 1, the Mi 2 still started at 1999 Yuan.

Xiaomi Mi 3

The third-gen Mi 3 joined the party in September 2013 with the same 1999 Yuan price and a more sophisticated hardware lineup. It sported a slightly larger 5-inch display with Full HD resolution (1080p) and the display came with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The Mi 3 packs Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM. There is 16GB and 64GB onboard storage options, as well as a 13MP rear sensor with dual LED flash. There is also a larger 3,050mAh battery with fast charging support. It ran on MIUI 5 ROM based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS, and since then has received upgrades to successive MIUI-based Android OS till the Android N.

Xiaomi Mi 4

 The Xaiomi Mi 4 was unveiled on 22 July 2014 and was a major departure from previous Xiaomi smartphones. The Mi 4 came with a metal unibody design along with the latest hardware on board. It sports a 5-inch Full HD (1080p) display with Gorilla Glass protection. There is also a Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor, 3GB of RAM, and 16GB and 64GB onboard storage options onboard.The camera aspect is taken care of by a 13MP rear camera with 4K video recording capabilities, while there is an 8-megapixel selfie camera. The Mi 4 packs a 3,080mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.0 support.

On the software front, it ran on KitKat-based MIUI 5, and has since received the upgrade to MIUI 8 based on Android N. The Xiaomi Mi 4 is also one of the first smartphones to officially support Windows Phone 10 ROM.

Xiaomi Mi 5

The cycle of release was broken by the Mi 5 which took two years from the Mi 4 to come. The Xiaomi Mi 5 was released 24 February 2016 with a host of changes on the design and hardware front. The Mi 5 sports a 3D front and back glass encased in a metal, thus adding to its premium look and feel. There is also a variant with 3D Ceramic body which, however, was scarce due to the slow production process.

Xiaomi Mi 6

The Mi 6 is the latest in the flagship series and it comes with a top notch design as well as a well-studded specs lineup. The Mi 6 features a 5.15-inch 1080p display and is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 chipset backed by just 6GB of RAM on all versions. The Mi 6 uses a curved glass body with metal fuselage. The device also comes with an anti-splash body and the display has an oleophobic coating. The base storage has 64GB of space while the top end version has 128GB storage. The Mi 6 also comes with a dual camera setup at the rear consisting of a 12MP main sensor and 12MP telephoto sensor. It runs MIUI 8 based on Android 7.0 Nougat and has a 3350mAh battery under its hood. The device is available in Blue, Black, White, Silver and Ceramic options.

The Mi 6 comes with a much different 2499 Yuan price tag for the 6GB + 64GB model. Despite the difference, the price tag is still well suited to leave Xiaomi as the “king of cheap flagship” phones. Right or wrong?

Xiaomi recently announced via its MIUI official Weibo page that the MIUI would soon bring a new screen recording feature which would be available at the end of February when the stable version of the feature would debut. The post did reveal that the feature has been on test on some devices like the Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi 5 and Xiaomi Mi Note.

Two videos demonstrating the latest feature has appeared on MIUI forum showing how it works. From the video, it can be gathered that the feature allows users to freely select the resolution size, picture quality, the numbers of frames, display touch points, as well as the ability to show or hide the physical buttons, and so on. Also, the feature allows the user to set the screen mode to vertical or horizontal when recording something playing on the screen. There is also the option of selecting an automatic mode as well.

Another cool thing about the recording feature is that it doesn’t affect or obstruct the smooth operation of other features on the phone. Xiaomi will be launching its next flagship on the 27th of September and today the company decided to go down memory lane by releasing the launch posters  of their Mi phones, right from the Xiaomi Mi 1 up to this year’s Mi 5.

If you owned or still own any of these devices, you will connect to these pictures.

• Xiaomi Mi 1/Xiaomi Phone: This phone launched with a 4” display 1GB of RAM and a Snapdragon S3 dual-core processor. The main camera is an 8MP shooter and there’s a 2MP camera for selfies. Back when it launched, Xiaomi sold it for 1999 Yuan and touted it as the phone capable of taking on the iPhone 4 and Samsung’s Galaxy S2.

• Xiaomi Mi 2: The Mi 2 was the major successor to the Mi Phone. It launched with a larger screen and a quad-core processor. It also doubled the RAM to 2GB. The company launched an upgraded version called the Mi 2s the following year which had a higher clock speed and a 13MP camera.
• Xiaomi Mi 3: This 5” device was a massive upgrade over its predecessors. Full HD display, Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip clocked at 2.3GHz, a 13MP camera with dual LED flash and a 3050mAh battery.
• Xiaomi Mi 4: One complaint people had with the Mi 3 was the lack of LTE. The Mi 4 fixed that. It also launched with 3GB of RAM and a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 chip. The Mi 4 also got refreshed in 2015 with the Mi 4C which has a Snapdragon  808 processor and a USB-Type C port;  a made for India Mi 4i with 2GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 615 processor; and a 2016 version called the Mi 4s that doubles the storage of the 3GB Mi 4c from 32GB to 64GB and has an expandable storage.
• Xiaomi Mi Note: The Mi Note launched in January 2015. It features a SD 801 chip, a 5.7” display, a 13MP camera that can shoot 4K, and a 4MP front facing camera that can record 1080p videos. A slightly upgraded version called the Mi Note Pro launched with a SD 810 processor, a Quad HD display, and 4GB of RAM. A successor, the Mi Note 2 is said to be in the works and should launch later this year.
• The other devices (the Mi 5 and Mi Max) need no introduction as they should still be fresh in our memories since they launched this year.

It happened again, millions of Mi 3 fans who were waiting for the sale were disappointed as the 20,000 phones vanished in few seconds. Flipkart, the online selling site, did this for the fourth time. Flipkart’s sale of Xiaomi new handsets Mi 3 started at 2 PM and ended in seconds. Thousands of people registered for the sale.

Flipkart is being criticized since the Chinese smartphone Xiaomi Mi3 was launched in India. A video shows the last moments of the sale on 12th August at 2 PM. The buy now button was not even seemed.   A video shows that there was the difference in the sale countdown timer on users’ browsers and Flipkart website. The user’s browser time is not synced with the Flipkart server. The people who clicked on ‘Buy’  button got message “Out of stock” as the countdown timer ended.

Some said the sale of was a scam. The fact is, that Flipkart is receiving the handsets in small batches which are put on sale every time.   Flipkart has got 55,000 handsets which were sold in four sales. There are over 3 lac Mi 3 buyers registered on Flipkart. The 20,000 handsets’ batch disappeared with in few seconds as the sale began.

Flipkart and Xiaomi are expected to get bashing from more than 80,000 customers who waited for the sale of Xiaomi Mi 3 handsets, today. As the 20,000 handsets just disappeared within few seconds there would be unsatisfied customers bashing Flipkart and Xiaomi, again.

There will be no pre-ordering and users can directly buy this new version. Other colors include sky grey, white, silvery grey, rosy red, and bright yellow.

This version of the Mi 3 will be the China Mobile (16GB) edition which uses the Nvidia Tegra 4 processor. It sports a 5-inch 1080p screen and a 2mp/13mp camera. It has 2GB RAM and a 3050mAh battery.

How to turn on your Mi 3’s flashlight…

From the lock screen:

1. Long tap the HOME button on the lock screen.
2. To turn the flashlight off, press the power button.

From the Home Screen:

1. Tap the Tools folder
2. Find and launch the Torch App

To add the  Torch button to the Notification Panel of your Mi 3, making it easy to operate the flashlight from anywhere on your phone. Here’s how:

1. Swipe the Notification Panel open from the top.
2. Select ‘Toggles’ and then ‘More’
3. Tap and hold the  symbol next to Torch and then drag it to the area above the ‘active bar’.

Now the torch will be available on the Toggles Panel and tapping it will turn the flashlight on and off.

Also, if you want a better flashlight, you can get a brighter one that blinks by downloading the Super-Bright LED Flashlight app.

There have been rumours of Xiaomi’s entry to the Indian market going around for months, hinted at mostly by Hugo Barra, ex-Android VP who joined Xiaomi from Google last year. It seems these rumours are about to become reality with a report revealing plans to join up with Flipkart to launch smartphones in India. This is the way Motorola went about things too but things are slightly different here. When Moto and Flipkart teamed up, Flipkart imported the devices on its own, but the Xiaomi report states that Xiaomi will be importing the devices and Flipkart will be retailing them. It seems there are no plans as yet for a Xiaomi retail chain in India.

There are two smartphones to be released, between mid-July and early August, with the smart money being on the Redmi and the Mi3. The low-budget Redmi has a 4.7 inch 702p IPS display, a quad-core 1.5 GHz Mediatek 6589 processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB internal storage, MicroSD card slot and 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front shooter.

The Mi3 has two variants, but the one most likely to be available for the Indian market contains a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC, 2GB RAM, 13MP rear camera and 2MP front shooter with a 3050mAh battery.

As for the prices it is reported that the Redmi could be priced at around RS8000 ($133USD) and the Mi3 around RS15000 ($250USD), there are also to be accessories and extras released but there are no solid reports as yet as to what these might be.

Also impressive is the company’s attitude to customer feedback, with the crowdsourcing of ideas which provide the basis for the design features they offer. The customer feedback is highly valued and when used to give the customers what they want they also make them feel like an important part of the process.

Once a new handset is announced, customers express their intent to buy on social media, giving the company an excellent idea of how many handsets they need to produce but also makes sales extremely fast. When the MI 3 was launched Xiaomi used this sales format to sell 100,000 handsets in just 83 seconds. Pretty impressive stuff.
