The Snapdragon 820-powered Xiaomi Mi 5 has seen its price reduced to 1599 Yuan ($240) on Lynx official flagship store in China. This is down from the initial price of 1799 Yuan ($270), representing 200 Yuan off. This price reduction seem to only affect the purple and gold colored standard edition of the Mi 5 with entire network support, as other variants still retain their initial price tag.

For the avoidance of doubt, the standard edition of the Mi 5 comes equipped with a 1.8GHz Snapdragon 820 chipset along with Adreno 530 GPU, 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The Xiaomi Mi 5 specs also include a 4GB RAM variant, 16MP main camera with Phase Detection Auto Focus, a 4MP secondary camera and a 3000mAh battery equipped with Quick Charge 3.0.

Xiaomi had said that the launch would be in April, but it looks like fans might just get their present early. The company has reportedly started sending out invites for the Mi 5 launch event in India, which will be on March 31.

The invites for the launch event clearly shows off the number 5 along with the usual tagline of “All you ever imagined, and more”. So, it’s no mystery that the company will announce the Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship at the March 31 event. Although the venue of the event is yet to be revealed, it will kick off at 2:30 pm local time.

Xiaomi released three different variants of the Mi 5 in China last month — two variants of the standard Mi 5 and one Mi 5 Pro. It’s possible that all the three models will be announced in the country at this week’s event. However, given that the Mi 5 Pro model is yet to go on sale even in China, you may have to wait for a few weeks more to get hold of the Pro version.

As for the specs, the two variants of the standard Mi 5 differ in terms of the internal storage, one with 32GB and the higher model with 64GB ROM. Both come with 3GB RAM. On the other hand, the Mi 5 Pro comes with a 3D ceramic body, along with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. All the three models are be powered by the Snapdragon 820 chip (Pro version gets a faster-clocked chip @2.15GHz). At the back, there is a 16MP camera with 4-axis OIS while up front, there is a 4MP Ultrapixel shooter. Other features include Android 6.0 with MIUI 7, 3000mAh battery, Quick Charge, VoLTE and dual SIM Card slots.

One thing that we still don’t know is the Xiaomi Mi 5’s price in India. But given the company’s aggressive pricing strategy in the country, you can expect it to be close to Chinee pricing i.e. 1999 Yuan (~Rs. 20500).

However, even before the release, we had seen a few renders of the device, which showed us that the phone will most likely come with a front facing physical home button with fingerprint sensor. Now, the same phone has leaked once again, but this time in its box. The design seems to be the same as the earlier leaks, so this could be the real deal.

This leak further confirms that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will come with a 2.5D glass design. The bezels are also quite narrow, so the screen to body ratio should be impressive. One important thing to note here is that Xiaomi has ditched the traditional brown recycled box design in its recent smartphones, yet the new Mi 5 is shown in this box. So, this may not be the box that the phone will be shipped.

As for the specs, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is expected to come with a 5-inch FHD 1080p display with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Under the hood, it’s confirmed to feature the powerful Snapdragon 820 quad-core chipset. Other possible features include 16MP rear camera, 8MP front-facing shooter, a large 4000mAh battery, fingerprint ID and Hi-Fi audio.

Not a day goes by without news about Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship, the Xiaomi Mi 5. We already know a lot about the device, thanks to its leaks and renders, and latest information has given us some idea about the phone’s pricing.

Xiaomi Mi 5 is confirmed to come with the powerful Snapdragon 820 chipset on board, which means that the phone is targeted at the high-end market. The company executive had earlier said that it wants to make its mark in the high-end market, i.e. in the 3000 Yuan segment ($455) this year. So, we are expecting the Xiaomi Mi 5 with top of the line specifications and a price tag around $400.

Latest information reveals that the Mi 5 will come in two editions, namely a standard variant and a premium variant. The standard edition will reportedly be priced around 2499 Yuan ($379) and will feature Snapdragon 820, 3GB RAM + 16GB storage, 16MP rear camera with OIS, and a 5.2-inch 1080p display. On the other hand, the premium edition will feature the same specs but increases memory combination to 4GB + 64GB storage. The premium version will be priced at 2999 Yuan ($455).

While this may be a bit costly as compared to Xiaomi’s previous smartphones, it will turn out to be relatively well priced. The only Snapdragon 820 powered smartphone announced this year, namely Le Max Pro is rumored to cost around $535. That’s almost $100 higher than the high-end Xiaomi Mi 5 variant.

Of course, at this moment, we can’t really confirm these prices. But expect the final figures to be somewhere near this. As for the release date, it should be after February 20, possible on Feb 23.

Xiaomi is yet to release invites for the event, so we will have to wait for a few days at least to get this information confirmed.

Meanwhile, the company could announce something in addition to the Mi 5 at the event, since its going to be around 2 hours long. Read more about that from here.

Fans have been waiting for the company to launch this device for more than a year now. But Xiaomi is taking its time to develop and release the device, probably because it’s one of the most important products the year. The Mi 5 is expected to come with top-end specs, including the newly launched Qualcomm flagship, Snapdragon 820. Given that the phone will feature such high-end tech, we have been wondering whether the company will price the device higher than Mi 4 (1999 Yuan i.e. $304).

Earlier leaked Mi 5

Now, a new rumor via the Chinese social networking website Weibo reveals that the Xiaomi Mi 5 could be priced more than 3500 Yuan which comes to around $532. The source says that the price could even go higher, but he didn’t give a specific upper limit.

This is contrary to what we heard about Mi 5’s pricing in the past. The company was expected to price the phone somewhere around 2499 Yuan which comes to around $380. The high-end version was rumored to cost somewhere in the 3000 Yuan range ($450). So, this pricing is really not what we are expecting from a Xiaomi flagship.

As for the specs, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is confirmed to come with Snapdragon 820 quad-core chip onboard. Other rumored features include 4GB of RAM, 32GB storage, 5.2-inch display with 2K resolution, 16MP rear + 8MP front cameras and a 3600mAh battery. There are even rumors about 3D touch feature on the device.

So, Mi 5 is definitely going to be a powerful device. Considering that the phone ends up with these specs, would you be willing to shell out anywhere upwards of $500 for the device?

Naturally, there have been many leaks, and rumors about the device and the frequency has only been increasing as we near the launch, which should be sometime around February 20. Now, the online retailer Gearbest, has just listed the Xiaomi Mi 5 on its website, revealing most of its specifications.

While we are unsure whether the specifications will turn out to be true, they are in line with what we have heard from the rumors in the past few months. So, according to the website, the Mi 5 will come with Snapdragon 820 quad-core chipset clocked at 1.8GHz. It is said that the display will be a 5.2-inch panel with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. The display will also be adorned by 2.5D glass. As for the memory, the phone will have 4GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Like we saw in the earlier renders, the phone has a fingerprint sensor as well, which is most likely on the front home button.

At the back, there is a 16MP camera with 6 element lens and f/2.2 aperture. Up front, you will find an 8MP camera. The phone also features NFC according to this listing, not a surprise given that we have already seen leaks supporting this claim. As for the software, the phone runs on Android 5.1 with MIUI 7 on top. Personally, I feel this would be disappointing if true, as we would expect the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow version on a 2016 flagship. Finally, for battery, the listing says that the Mi 5 comes with a 3600mAh capacity lithium-ion polymer battery.

The release is said to be on February 20, according to the latest information. Foxconn employees are reportedly working overtime to manufacture enough stock of the Xiaomi Mi 5 by the time of launch.

As for the pricing, Gearbest has listed the phone for $625.80 which a pretty hefty price for a Xiaomi flagship. CEO Lei Jun had earlier hinted that the company will be releasing a 3000 Yuan ($455) smartphone this year. So, we can expect the official price of the Mi 5 to be around this figure, and not as much as $650. That’s probably the third party retailer pricing.

But for now, we can’t be sure of these specs or even the pricing. So, we better wait for more information.

Just yesterday, a new leak said that the company may opt for a traditional fingerprint sensor instead of Qualcomm’s UltraSonic Scanner. Later, a leaked render of the Mi 5 was spotted online revealing a front facing physical home button with fingerprint ID up front.

Redmi Note 3 with FPC 1035 sensor

Now, according to new information from Weibo, the Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship will most likely use a fingerprint sensor from FPC. It could be a similar sensor as the one found on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 mid-ranger. The Note 3 uses the FPC 1035 sensor which is fast and supports 360 degree finger rotation capability. So, the upcoming Mi 5 flagship could use any of the 1000 series sensor from the company.

As for the other specifications, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is expected to come with Snapdragon 820 quad-core chip on board in two versions, 3GB + 32GB memory and 4GB + 64GB memory. At the back, we can expect a 21MP shooter and up front an 8MP sensor. The battery should be at least 3000mAh. As for the display, it should be around 5.2-inches with 2K resolution.

Recent reports state that the pricing will start at 1999 Yuan ($312) which will be pretty aggressive for a flagship device. However, Xiaomi is yet to reveal any details about the phone.

Officially, all we know so far is that the Mi 5 flagship is currently being used by the CEO Lei Jun and he finds the phone “very good”. The phone is expected to be unveiled in January (Jan 21?) and released sometime in February after the Spring Festival in China.

Although we have to wait for around a month for the phone’s unveiling, Qualcomm might give out some details about the first Snapdragon 820 powered smartphone while announcing the chip in China on December 11. So, stay tuned.

Now, a new Xiaomi Mi 5 render has made it online, revealing the front of the flagship.

According to the new render, the Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship will continue to use a design similar to the one we have seen on the Mi Note series. However, there’s one major difference up front. The phone will feature a physical home button on the front, a first for a Xiaomi device. This actually makes sense since earlier today we heard that the Mi 5 will probably come with a front facing fingerprint sensor. And up till now, we have seen major companies use a physical home button to incorporate a fingerprint sensor underneath the button.

As we cannot see the back of the device, we can’t be sure whether the phone features a metal body. However, according to the previous rumors, the Mi 5 is expected to come in all metal design. Further, the display which will most likely be of 5.2-inches will also come with a Force Touch/ 3D Touch pressure sensitive technology.

Other expected specifications of the phone include 2K resolution on its 5.2-inch display, Snapdragon 820, 3GB + 32GB / 4GB + 64GB memory combinations, 21MP rear camera and an 8MP front facing shooter. As for software, expect the phone to come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow version with MIUI 7 on top right out of the box.

While the company is yet to confirm a date for the phone’s release, recent rumors suggest that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will most likely debut on January 21, 2016, which is a Thursday. It’s possible since we have continuously heard about a Jan release for the device, after which the phone will be available for sale in February.

So, what do you think about the new Xiaomi Mi 5 render? Were you expecting a revolutionary design or did you like this one?

However, things have started to speed up in the recently, especially after the Grand Finale event of the company late November. Yesterday, IHS analyst revealed that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will most likely be the first phone to feature Snapdragon 820 chipset. Now, another analyst, Pan Jiutang has thrown some light on the fingerprint recognition sensor of the device.

Since the past few months, there have been reports that Xiaomi will incorporate Qualcomm’s latest UltraSonic Fingerprint Scanner on the Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship. However, Pan Jiutang dismisses these claims saying that the scanning technology is still not very stable or reliable to be used on a popular flagship like the Mi 5.

UltraSonic Fingerprint Scanning technology reportedly does not require any particular sensor or button to work. Instead, this technology can be incorporated under any material such as metal, glass or plastic, opening up a number of areas for available fingerprint recognition, including the display. Moreover, the technology is not as affected by grease, or dirt on the finger as other traditional technologies.

However, it looks like it’s still not ready to be used on a wide scale. So, he adds that Xiaomi Mi 5 will use a traditional sensor on the front. However, we can’t rule out the possibility that it could be a better tech than existing sensors.

The flagship is expected to be announced sometime in January 2016, and will be available for sale after the Spring Festival in China that happens in February. Earlier reports have said that the stock will be in plenty, so the company could be expecting a lot fo demand for the device.

This proved that the Mi 5 prototype was all ready and working.

However, yesterday, Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun made a few Weibo posts on the social micro-blogging website. While they were just general posts, saying nothing about the phone in use, at the bottom of the post, we could see that it was posted by an unknown Xiaomi phone. In case you have ever seen Weibo, usually when posting from a phone, the model name of the phone is always displayed at the bottom of the post. So, given that Weibo couldn’t identify the model name of the new Xiaomi device, many believe that this could be the Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship.

So, if Lei Jun has started using the new Xiaomi Mi 5 for activities like posting on Weibo, could it mean that the phone is in its final stages? If that’s the case, then we should see the phone release soon, something in January-February period.

Earlier leaked Mi5 render

Specs wise, the Mi 5 is expected to feature high-end features. It should come with the new Snapdragon 820 chipset with 4GB RAM and 16GB of storage. A recent comment from Pan Jiutang revealed that the phone could come with a 5.2-inch display with 2K or 4K resolution. These are going to be AMOLED panels, a deviation from IPS LCD panels used by the company in most phones of its phones these days. Battery should be large, and the other specs are expected to be pretty good as well.

Since the launch shouldn’t be far off, we can expect to see a lot more information about the device in the next few weeks. So, stay tuned!
