However, if you own the Mi 5 or Mi 5 Plus and would like to experience the latest Android version on your good old Mi 5 or Mi 5 Plus, Lineage OS has come to the rescue. LineageOS 18.0 has ported the Mi 5 to Android 11.

A support page for the Mi 5 at XDA Developers (via 1, 2) claims that even with the third-party arrangement, practically everything works. Also, LineageOS 18.0 supports all configurations of the Mi 5. The custom ROM is in a beta phase anyway and you should expect some bugs and glitches.

On the other hand, the Mi 5s Plus ROM, which is not the same as the one for the Mi 5, is in a testing phase. Also, the Wfd Service does not work with this build.

In case you plan on porting to this custom ROM, do ensure that you save all your data before installing either of these ROMs.

Xiaomi‘s Mi series is the company’s flagship models which usually come with one upgrade on the other. Right from time, Xiaomi has always improved on the series’ cameras right from the Mi 2 to the dual camera packing Mi 6. The Mi 6 isn’t the first dual camera phone manufactured by Xiaomi. It is, in fact, the company’s third dual camera smartphone but the phone has turned out to be the Xiaomi’s best dual camera flagship till date.

The Xiaomi Mi 2 was released in 2012 with a 4.3-inch display. Despte the size, the device featured an 8MP camera with f/2.0 aperture, autofocus, 27mm wide angle, back-illuminated CMOS and LED flash. The camera also features Geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, HDR and can shoot Full HD video 1080p@30fps. The Mi 2 also packs a smallish 2MP selfie camera  which can also capture 1080p videos at 30fps.

The Xiaomi Mi 3 quickly followed the Mi 2 and was introduced in 2013. The Mi 3 came with a more powerful 13MP ExmorRS main camera with f/2.2 aperture, 28mm wide angle, autofocus, dual-tone LED flash.  The camera also comes with features such as Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, HDR, Full HD video capture at 30fps. Xiaomi touted the Mi 3 camera as the first domestic mobile phone to support RAW format. The secondary camera is still a 2MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture which seems to suggest Xiaomi was focusing on the main camera during these years.

Xiaomi Mi 4 was announced in 2014, taking the rein over from the Mi 3. The sleek device is said to be the first Mi phone to feature real-time HDR and also touch focus. The Mi 4 packs a 13MP camera but with a smaller f/1.8 aperture. The Mi 4 also saw a huge leap from 2MP selfie camera to an 8MP selfie camera with f/1.8 aperture, signalling a shift towards better selfie cameras.

Xiaomi took things to another plane on the Mi 5 which feature a four-axis Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) found in professional cameras. The Mi 5 camera is a powerful 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture, dual-tone LED flash which the rear camera was reduced to a 4MP sensor for whatever reason best known to Xiaomi. The company spent two years before releasing the Mi 5 in 2016 and it was worth the wait.

Xiaomi released the Mi 5S also in 2015 and it also had some improvements in its cameras. The main camera is a powerful Sony IMX378 sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The Mi 5s also features a 4MP camera. The Mi 5S Plus was aso released with dual 13MP cameras at the rear and a similar 4MP sensor at the front.

Now, with the Xiaomi Mi 6 which also has a dual camera setup, the company have taken things to another level, using a similar setup as the iPhone 7 Plus, a 12MP wide angle lens, and a 12MP telephone lens. The two rear cameras on the Redmi Pro were far from impressive but the setup on the Mi 5S Plus turned out to be quite good. The two cameras at the back managed to capture good-looking images especially in broad daylight, but the real difference due to the dual cameras was seen in the low light images. The stereo mode helped take pretty good low light shots, better than previous generations. Indee, with the Mi 6, you get two times lossless zoom and also better shooting.

The Mi 6 is Xiaomi’s latest flagship and seems to be getting all the attention but the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus haven’t been forgotten. Last week, Xiaomi announced it was going to release an Android Nougat Beta update for the Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi MIX, and Mi Note 2 starting today.

As at the time of writing, the update is said to be available already for the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus. The update is a closed beta, so it isn’t available to everyone.

The update brings the MIUI 8 version number to 7.5.15 and comes in at 1.4GB. The change-log only states that the Android version has been updated to Nougat. Update for the Mi Note 2 and Mi MIX shouldn’t be far off too.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus were released in October 2016. Both phones are powered by the Snapdragon 821 processor. The Mi 5s is the smaller variant with a 5.15-inch FHD display, an ultrasonic front-mounted fingerprint scanner, a single rear camera and a 3200mAh battery. The Mi 5s Plus features a 5.7-inch screen, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, dual rear cameras and a 3800mAh battery.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 will go on sale tomorrow. From the look of things, it is bound to be in short supply for a while. If you are even able to get your hands on a unit, you will probably be paying a lot more than you should. The price from third party resellers falls between $450 and $470 depending on the storage. That is a lot compared to the ~$421 official price for the 128GB model and ~$363 price for the 64GB variant.

The Mi 6 is one of the few Snapdragon 835-powered smartphones announced so far but not everyone is crazy about the new processor. There are other powerful phones in the market that will handle whatever you throw at them. Some sell for less than the Mi 6 and some even have features missing on Xiaomi’s new flagship. Plus you can get any one of these smartphones without breaking a sweat.

Below is a list of five smartphones we believe are great alternatives to the Xiaomi Mi 6.

OnePlus 3T

The OnePlus 3T is one of the best smartphones in the market right now. It is a combination of great specs, impressive software, and affordable pricing. Just like the Mi 6, the OnePlus 3T also has 6GB of RAM and is available in the same 64GB and 128GB  storage variants.

Although its display is bigger at 5.5-inches, it has Gorilla Glass 4 protection, a feature that is repeatedly missing on Xiaomi’s flagship phones. The 3T can also be updated to Android Nougat 7.1.1 and to be honest, we know Oxygen OS is a lot smoother than MIUI. Let’s not forget Dash Charge which is way faster than the QC 3.0 on the Mi 6.

For $439, you can pick up the 64GB model of the OnePlus 3T or you can wait till the 128GB model is in stock and grab it for $479.

Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus

One of the unique selling points of the Mi 6 is the dual rear cameras, however, this isn’t Xiaomi’s first dual camera smartphone. The Redmi Pro and Mi 5S Plus are the first and second respectively.

While the Redmi Pro is no longer in production, the Mi 5s Plus still is. It won’t take bokeh pictures like the Mi 6 because it uses the monochrome + RGB format for its dual Sony IMX258 13MP cameras but you can be assured of taking sharper images.

Earlier today, Xiaomi announced a price slash for the 4GB + 64GB and 6GB RAM + 128GB variants. The former now sells for approx. $315 and the latter which has the same memory configuration as the high-end Mi 6 is priced at approx. $355. You can also grab the 3GB + 64GB model for roughly $250.

Giztop has the phone for $369 (4GB +64GB).

Missing out on the blue and gold color of the Xiaomi Mi 6? Then grab the case above on AliExpress and worry no more.

Xiaomi Mi MIX

Don’t be surprised that the alternatives we are suggesting include Xiaomi phones. Xiaomi is good at providing flagship specs at a low price, so whatever we are recommending as an alternative to the Mi 6 shouldn’t put a hole in your pocket.

The Mi MIX will turn more heads than the Mi 6 and that’s because of its bezel-less display. The Mi MIX is the concept device that made it out of the factory and onto store shelves. Its 6.4-inch display is a beauty that extends to the edges of three of its four sides, giving you more screen estate while still maintaining a small footprint.

It is powered by the Snapdragon 821 processor like the other two phones above and is available with either 6GB of RAM + 256GB ROM or 4GB RAM + 128GB ROM. The former will cost you around $600 on Aliexpress while the 4GB variant can be gotten for about $550. Did I forget to mention that the Mi MIX has a ceramic body? So you don’t need to wait for the ceramic version of the Mi 6 which won’t be on sale tomorrow and will be released in limited quantities.

Huawei Honor V9/Honor 8 Pro

This was the first flagship of the year and a pretty device from Huawei too. The Honor V9 has a 2K display, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and dual rear cameras that takes 3D photos and offers the same performance as that of the Huawei P9 just without the Leica branding. Reviews say the low-light performance is nothing short of impressive. You also can’t go wrong with the blue and red color variants of this phone.

The Honor V9 was released internationally as the Honor 8 Pro but pricing is a bit different for both. The 6GB RAM Honor V9 will cost you between $525 to $560 on Aliexpress depending on the color while the 4GB variant sells for between $450 to $500.

Note that the Honor V9 is currently available in our own shop as well (giztop) for $479 (6GB + 64GB).

The Honor 8 Pro sells for a lot more in Europe. It has 64GB of storage instead of 128GB like the Honor V9 but keeps the RAM at 6GB. Price is a whopping £474 (~$611).

LeEco Le Pro 3

The Le Pro 3 closes the list. Just like the rest of the devices above, it also has 6GB of RAM and comes with either 64GB or 128GB of storage. Powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor and 4070mAh battery, the Le Pro 3 is the only alternative that doesn’t have an audio jack like the Mi 6. However, LeEco makes up for it with its CDLA technology. The phone also comes with Dolby Atmos Audio which improves the audio quality.

The LeEco Le Pro 3 wouldn’t have made our list if not for its low price as its the only phone on this list that is not running Android Nougat or has an update planned for it.

The 6GB RAM + 64GB Le Pro 3 sells for between $315 and $350 while the 4GB RAM version with 64GB of storage is priced at about $290.

Honorable Mention: ZTE Axon 7S

The original ZTE Axon 7 was released back in June 2016 with a Snapdragon 820 processor and 4GB of RAM. It also got a Nougat update back in February that made it Google Daydream compatible. While there has been no news of a ZTE Axon 8, we were surprised when ZTE silently released a new phone a few weeks back. That phone is the ZTE Axon 7s and it gets a honorable mention on our list.

The Axon 7s retains most of the design from the Axon 7 but is now powered by the Snapdragon 821. The RAM has been increased to 6GB and storage is 128GB.

The other major upgrade in the Axon 7s is the dual rear cameras. You still get that 20MP 1.25µm camera but it is now paired with a 12MP Sony IMX368 1µm sensor. What’s more, the Axon 7 has a microSD slot too, a feature none of the other phones on this list has and also retains the stereo speakers though they have been redesigned. The price is still unknown for now but it is expected to be around $500.

Xiaomi will be opening up the Mi 6 tomorrow to go on its first flash sale exercise in China and they have disclosed that only the bright black version of the flagship will be available. The Mi 6 Bright Black 64GB variant is offered for 2499 Yuan while the 128GB version goes for 2999 Yuan.

As we’ve been expecting, Xiaomi has given the Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus models slight reduction in their prices, ahead of the Mi 6 first sale. Both models have gotten a 150 Yuan reduction in their prices across all variants. Consequently, the Mi 5S is now up for 1,849 Yuan instead of 1999 Yuan while the M5S Plus 4GB + 64GB now costs 2,149 Yuan instead of 2,299Yuan and the 6GB + 128GB version 2449 Yuan, almost at par with the Mi 6 64GB version. This price reduction is only for one day, though, and that is April 28 when the Mi 6 will be on sale.

The company is perhaps trying to capitalise on the Mi 6 sales and the huge attention it has attracted, to sell other models. Because nothing else explains the fact that Xiaomi has also made the Mi MIX and Mi Note 2 available for purchase on its online store. This is a good move and could bring some results as the Mi 6 registration on Jingdong alone presently stands at over 1.2 million persons. This should be more than the total units that would go on sale across several platforms tomorrow. While some fans would still want to go through the long wait that they will sure encounter to buy the Mi 6 even after the first flash sale, others might just choose to go for other models. Moreso, the Mi 5S, Mi 5S Plus, Mi Mix and Mi Note 2 are attractive smartphones that would surely make for a good buy.

A Chinese man by the name Mr. Zhang has taken Xiaomi to court over the company’s failure to release an update that unlocks the full function of the NFC chip in his phone.

Mr Zhang had earlier purchased a Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus after reading on the company’s website that a stable MIUI update that will bring the full features of NFC such as the use of bus cards and bank cards will be released in late October.

Now that we are already half way into November, no update has been released yet and Mr Zhang isn’t happy. After writing to the company to table his complaint, he requested for a refund and compensation which the company has failed to respond to. He has therefore decided to file a suit against the phone manufacturer.

The suit is valid due to the consumer protection act which can hold businesses accountable for actions which can be deemed unfair to consumers. While the case is still pending, the court will most likely rule in favour of the plaintiff as the statement on the website led him to purchase the device in the first place.

The post Xiaomi Mi 5S & Mi 5S First Hands On: Basic Overview of the two new Flagships (Video) appeared first on Gizmochina.

Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi Mi 5S and the Mi 5S Plus flagships a couple of days back and a few hours ago, both these phones went on sale in China. Now, if you are an international user, here’s some good news. The Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus are both up for pre-order on OPPOMART.

The Xiaomi Mi 5S is up for order at $349 on the website for the 3GB RAM version, while the 4GB RAM model will retail for $399. Interestingly, the gray version of both the models are $50 costlier on OPPOMART, so the 3GB RAM Gray version is up for $399 and the 4GB RAM Gray version costs $449.

Even the Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus, which is the larger 5.7-inch model, is listed on OPPOMART for a starting price tag of $399 for the 4GB RAM version and $449 for the 6GB RAM version. Once again, the Gray version costs $50 more than the other color variants.

Finally, the Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus have both been unveiled and indeed the unveiling was packed with lots of surprises. Most surprising is the fact that the Mi 5S Plus is only a Plus version in size and not ready a higher variant of the Mi 5S . Another surprise package is the actual render of the devices, especially the Mi 5S which looked nothing like the leaked renders we had been holding on to. Yet another surprise, perhaps the most epic of the lot, is the price tag which the Xiaomi Mi 5S amd 5S Plus carries, which even comes cheaper than the cheap price tag they had been rumored to carry. You’ll get to see this early hands on and unboxing images which comes courtesy of Sina Technology.

The Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus are real beauties in all ramifications; beautiful design, awesome specs, innovative features and lots. However, they both cannot be at par, the Mi 5S comes in as the most innovative, and beautiful of the duo. The Mi 5S alone features the acclaimed under glass ultrasonic fingerprint scanner situated as a virtual button at the home screen region right under the display.

The Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus on the other hand, comes as a 5.7 incher and sports a dual camera at its rear which is said to include a black and white sensor and a color sensor. They both can work independently or together to give crisp clear images devoid of image noise. Its own fingerprint scanner is at the back under the dual cameras and there are no virtual buttons but capacitive keys on the device.

If you don’t look carefully, merely staring at the Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus box casing would give the impression that you are staring at the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus boxes. And quite frankly, opening up the boxes reveal devices as beautiful, if not more beautiful, as the latest iPhones. The devices comes inside the boxes with their charger and data cables.

We must not fail however to point out that the shape of the virtual button looks nothing like the iPhone’s round home key as rumored but rather maintains Xiaomi’s custom oblong shape. The only different should be the fact that the button this time around is a virtual one and you won’t get to hear the click sound when pressed.

In all, these are real beauties and it is just apt to say that the China phone giants seem to be on a mission to redefine what a flagship actually is. First OnePlus 3, then Le Pro 3 and now the Mi 5S has taken the old impression that a flagship has to be pricey to the cleaners and we are indeed impressed! Delight yourselves in lot more images from down below.

The post Xiaomi Mi 5S & Mi 5S Plus Hands On & Unboxing Images appeared first on Gizmochina.

The launch of the new Xiaomi flagships has come and gone and while we might have to wait a few days before articles and videos of first impressions start flooding the net, that doesn’t mean the feeling off euphoria has to wear off immediately. So bask in these official photos of the bigger Mi 5s Plus.

Is it just me or does the Mi 5s Plus look a bit like the Redmi Pro, save for the design of the dual cameras, fingerprint scanner, and the LED flash?

The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus has a nice design. This is Xiaomi’s second dual-camera phone and the camera design is entirely different. The cameras are in a single housing and the LED flash flanks it on the left. Sitting below it is a fingerprint scanner which doesn’t appear to be an ultrasonic sensor like that of its sibling, the Xiaomi Mi 5s.

Xiaomi retains the style of placing the volume rocker and power buttons on the right. Unlike the original Mi 5 and the Mi 5s which have illuminated dots on both sides of the fingerprint scanner, the Mi 5s Plus uses the familiar backlit icons which is present on the Redmi Note 3.

The Mi 5s Plus has a large 5.7 inches 1080p display that has been crammed into a body smaller than that of the iPhone 7 Plus which has a 5.5” display by the way. It also has a 3800mAh battery, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, and support for Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0.

Pricing starts at $345 for the 4GB RAM + 64GB version and $390 for the 6GB RAM and 128GB version. With the pricing of the latter, I think the OnePlus 3 has indeed met its match.

The post Official Pictures of Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus appeared first on Gizmochina.

This past week end was a busy one, especially for the Xiaomi Mi 5S and leaks. We saw quite a number of them and it’s not surprising, considering that the device would be launched on September 27 which is just a day away. It is difficult to pinpoint one particular leak as the most spectacular because we were awed by each of them.

One of the leaks involved a few renders of the Mi 5s with its round virtual fingerprint scanner button. The leaked render seem to have been shot inside Xiaomi’s manufacturing plant, if the white gloves worn by the person holding it is anything to go by. The beautiful white image gives us a very clear front view of the Mi 5S and the most prominent feature revealed should be the under glass ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. Another render is that of a black colored version of what is said to be the Xiaomi Mi 5S showing similar design. A screenshot of the device’s on screen settings seems to clearly confirm this is indeed the Mi 5S.

Questions have been asked in the past as to how we’d be able to know what part of the display screen exactly the scanner would be if there is nothing to show. The circular home button which is a virtual button would be the location of the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. Let’s just point out that this looks like that on the iPhone 7 but the technology at work triumphs that of the Apple brand. It is touted to work even with dirty, greasy or wet hands.

Another very interesting leak we were gifted by popular tipster @kjuma is a render of the ceramic black variant of the Mi 5S Plus which seem to have been grabbed from an online shop already advertising the device on its website. The render depicts the dual cameras tilted to the extreme left corner of the phone’s back instead of being located in the middle. This is quite surprising, though, because we have also seen similar renders of the ceramic black color variant with the dual-cameras sitting in the middle. The good thing is we now know the Mi 5S Plus is likely going to get the dual cameras and also a top storage version with 256GB of internal storage.

To underscore the high level of anticipation about the device, a leaked photo frame advertising the device would be sold on  Jingdong (JD.com) also revealed that sales would commence on September 29, just two days after its release. So quick! However, seems the Mi 5S Plus would wait till October 7 before hitting stores.

As usual, Gizmochina will keep to updated on the launch event live from the Beijing National Convention center.

The post Mi 5S Appears in More Leaked Renders: Sales Start Sept 29 appeared first on Gizmochina.

We first reported the existence of a Mi 5s Plus last week. We still don’t have any new details about the device but last night Xiaomi’s co-founder, Lin Bin, sort of confirmed the device does exist.

A post on his Weibo account at an event yesterday revealed that the device used to  make the post is no other than the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus. This is the first genuine proof of the phone’s existence.

Following last week’s first mention of the Mi 5s Plus, an image of what is presumed to be that of the phone was posted by a Xiaomi engineer, Zhu Dan. The phone has its camera and sensor positioned in the middle instead of the top left corner like we have it on the Mi 5. Mr. Dan has however deleted the post.

Until recently, we had thought Xiaomi was releasing only the Mi 5S but then the Mi 5S Plus emerged out of the blues. We had left that off as mere speculation but then a recent leaked posted revealing the prices of both the Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus have put a stamp on the fact that the “Apple of China” will indeed gift us a Mi 5S Plus.

The two posters contained the Mi logo, perhaps ascribing some authenticity to them but then, we cannot tell if they are indeed authentic. However, the poster reveals the base storage version Mi 5S with Snapdragon 821 chip, 6GB RAM and 64GB storage will start at 1999 Yuan ($300). Not forgetting it is touted as the world’s first smartphone to use Under Glass ultrasonic fingerprint identification and might pack dual rear cameras, among more for just 1999 Yuan ($300). That’s incredible if true!

On the other hand the Mi 5S Plus with SD 821, 6GB RAM and a mammoth 256GB of built-in storage is said to carry a higher price tag of 2999 Yuan ($450). We don’t know much about the Mi 5S Plus but it is said to come with a larger 5.7-inch dual-curved screen display with an upgraded 2K resolution, a Snapdragon 821 chip and probably the same under-glass ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. There was previously no detail about the RAM, ROM, and camera configuration but now we know it will have a 6GB RAM and perhaps only one storage version with 256GB of storage space.

As stated earlier, we cannot vouch for the authenticity f this information, the Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus could as well have higher price tags considering the high-end specs they are bringing to the table.

The post Xiaomi Mi 5S & Mi 5S Plus Prices Revealed, Ultra Cheap! appeared first on Gizmochina.

We are looking forward to the launch of the Xiaomi Mi 5s which sources have hinted may hold on the 27th of September. However, rumors say that might not be the only Mi 5 phone to launch. Alongside the Mi 5s, Xiaomi may be launching the Mi 5s Plus too.

Reports say the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus will feature a Snapdragon 821 processor, a 5.7″ dual-curve display, and probably the same under-glass ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. There are no details about the RAM, ROM, and camera configuration.

In addition to the news of the Xiaomi Mi 5s, a new image of the phone was leaked earlier today in China. This time, it’s a low-quality image, and we can just make that the placement of the camera sensor at the back is a bit different than the Mi5 flagship. The camera is located around the middle, instead of the top left corner as found on the Mi5.

In case you noticed, these specs are quite similar to the specs rumored for the Mi Note 2 /  Mi Note Pro smartphone. What’s even more interesting is a new rumor which states that Xiaomi Mi Note 2 may no longer exist. Now, this is indeed surprising given that we have been consistently hearing about the new flagship for the past few months.

Hopefully, things will get cleared in the days to come.
