Xiaomi has been pretty consistent in pushing the latest MIUI updates to older models. The Mi 5S which as released in 2016 is one of such models. The company has revealed via the MIUI Weibo account that the Mi 5S is receiving MIUI 10 stable updates.

The Mi 5S comes with its own unique features such as brushed metal back panel, ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and others. So, the custom ROM will be specially developed to take into consideration the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. The new update also brings features such as face recognition and Face Unlock to the model.

Apart from the MI 5S, Xiaomi’s MIUI team also have several older Mi phones covered in terms of the latest update. Just this month, the second batch of MIUI 10 stable version was pushed to a total of 21 models. The models include the Mi Max 2, Mi 4S, Mi 4C, Mi 5S, Mi 5s Plus, Mi Max standard version, Mi Max high version, Mi 4 mobile / Unicom / Telecom 3G versions. Others include the Mi 4 Telecom 4G version , Redmi 5A, Redmi 4A, Redmi 4 high version, Redmi 4X, Redmi Note 5A standard version, Redmi Note 5A high version, Redmi Note4, Redmi Note 4X MTK platform, Redmi Pro, Redmi Note 3 full Netcom, Redmi 5 Plus, and Redmi Note 4X Snapdragon version.

Xiaomi‘s Mi series is the company’s flagship models which usually come with one upgrade on the other. Right from time, Xiaomi has always improved on the series’ cameras right from the Mi 2 to the dual camera packing Mi 6. The Mi 6 isn’t the first dual camera phone manufactured by Xiaomi. It is, in fact, the company’s third dual camera smartphone but the phone has turned out to be the Xiaomi’s best dual camera flagship till date.

The Xiaomi Mi 2 was released in 2012 with a 4.3-inch display. Despte the size, the device featured an 8MP camera with f/2.0 aperture, autofocus, 27mm wide angle, back-illuminated CMOS and LED flash. The camera also features Geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, HDR and can shoot Full HD video 1080p@30fps. The Mi 2 also packs a smallish 2MP selfie camera  which can also capture 1080p videos at 30fps.

The Xiaomi Mi 3 quickly followed the Mi 2 and was introduced in 2013. The Mi 3 came with a more powerful 13MP ExmorRS main camera with f/2.2 aperture, 28mm wide angle, autofocus, dual-tone LED flash.  The camera also comes with features such as Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, HDR, Full HD video capture at 30fps. Xiaomi touted the Mi 3 camera as the first domestic mobile phone to support RAW format. The secondary camera is still a 2MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture which seems to suggest Xiaomi was focusing on the main camera during these years.

Xiaomi Mi 4 was announced in 2014, taking the rein over from the Mi 3. The sleek device is said to be the first Mi phone to feature real-time HDR and also touch focus. The Mi 4 packs a 13MP camera but with a smaller f/1.8 aperture. The Mi 4 also saw a huge leap from 2MP selfie camera to an 8MP selfie camera with f/1.8 aperture, signalling a shift towards better selfie cameras.

Xiaomi took things to another plane on the Mi 5 which feature a four-axis Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) found in professional cameras. The Mi 5 camera is a powerful 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture, dual-tone LED flash which the rear camera was reduced to a 4MP sensor for whatever reason best known to Xiaomi. The company spent two years before releasing the Mi 5 in 2016 and it was worth the wait.

Xiaomi released the Mi 5S also in 2015 and it also had some improvements in its cameras. The main camera is a powerful Sony IMX378 sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The Mi 5s also features a 4MP camera. The Mi 5S Plus was aso released with dual 13MP cameras at the rear and a similar 4MP sensor at the front.

Now, with the Xiaomi Mi 6 which also has a dual camera setup, the company have taken things to another level, using a similar setup as the iPhone 7 Plus, a 12MP wide angle lens, and a 12MP telephone lens. The two rear cameras on the Redmi Pro were far from impressive but the setup on the Mi 5S Plus turned out to be quite good. The two cameras at the back managed to capture good-looking images especially in broad daylight, but the real difference due to the dual cameras was seen in the low light images. The stereo mode helped take pretty good low light shots, better than previous generations. Indee, with the Mi 6, you get two times lossless zoom and also better shooting.

The Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus launched late last year and have been updated to MIUI 8.2 but are still stuck on Android Marshmallow. That’s pretty sad considering Android O is around the corner. LineageOS, the phoenix that rose from the ashes of Cyanogen have released LineageOS 14.1 for them.

For those who have been following the community, LineageOS 14.1 is based on Android 7.1. It was already available for the Mi 5s Plus since May but it has just been made for the Mi 5s thanks to  XDA Developers member, LuK1337 and a number of other contributors.

The following features have been confirmed to work: boots, WiFi, Bluetooth, Cameras, video playback, audio, sensors and GPS.

The Mi 6 is Xiaomi’s latest flagship and seems to be getting all the attention but the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus haven’t been forgotten. Last week, Xiaomi announced it was going to release an Android Nougat Beta update for the Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi MIX, and Mi Note 2 starting today.

As at the time of writing, the update is said to be available already for the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus. The update is a closed beta, so it isn’t available to everyone.

The update brings the MIUI 8 version number to 7.5.15 and comes in at 1.4GB. The change-log only states that the Android version has been updated to Nougat. Update for the Mi Note 2 and Mi MIX shouldn’t be far off too.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus were released in October 2016. Both phones are powered by the Snapdragon 821 processor. The Mi 5s is the smaller variant with a 5.15-inch FHD display, an ultrasonic front-mounted fingerprint scanner, a single rear camera and a 3200mAh battery. The Mi 5s Plus features a 5.7-inch screen, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, dual rear cameras and a 3800mAh battery.

Xiaomi is set to offer its range of products including smartphones, Smart TV, Smart home gadgets and others at a reduced price. In addition, the Xiaomi Mi 5S 3GB + 64GB price has been reduced by 200 Yuan bringing it down to 1799 Yuan. The Mi 5S Plus 4GB + 64GB is also getting a 200 Yuan reduction and will be up for 2,099 Yuan. If you’re looking for a budget phone, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 will be offered for 50 Yuan less the original price at 949 Yuan.

The Mi Water Purifier will come with six free cotton filter while the Mi Robot Vacuum will be on sale with a 59-Yuan extension box free.

Xiaomi will be opening up the Mi 6 tomorrow to go on its first flash sale exercise in China and they have disclosed that only the bright black version of the flagship will be available. The Mi 6 Bright Black 64GB variant is offered for 2499 Yuan while the 128GB version goes for 2999 Yuan.

As we’ve been expecting, Xiaomi has given the Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus models slight reduction in their prices, ahead of the Mi 6 first sale. Both models have gotten a 150 Yuan reduction in their prices across all variants. Consequently, the Mi 5S is now up for 1,849 Yuan instead of 1999 Yuan while the M5S Plus 4GB + 64GB now costs 2,149 Yuan instead of 2,299Yuan and the 6GB + 128GB version 2449 Yuan, almost at par with the Mi 6 64GB version. This price reduction is only for one day, though, and that is April 28 when the Mi 6 will be on sale.

The company is perhaps trying to capitalise on the Mi 6 sales and the huge attention it has attracted, to sell other models. This is a good move and could bring some results as the Mi 6 registration on Jingdong alone presently stands at over 1.2 million persons. This should be more than the total units that would go on sale across several platforms tomorrow.While some fans would still want to go through the long wait that they will sure encounter to buy the Mi 6 even after the first flash sale, others might just choose to go for other models. Turns out the Xiaomi official website is not the only place where discounts for the Mi Festival will run. Online mall, Jingdong will also be running its own sales. If you are out for a new phone, then you may want to consider the Xiaomi Mi 5s which is getting discounted on the site.

The Mi 5s is the successor to the Mi 5. They have the same screen size but the Mi 5s is powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor and features an under-glass fingerprint scanner up front. The Mi 5s is also made out of metal instead of glass like the Mi 5.

The 3GB + 64GB variant sells for ¥1999 ($290) but Jingdong will let you have it for ¥1799 ($261) if you pay in full upfront. If you pay ¥990 ($144) upfront, your discount is lowered to ¥100. Sadly, the discount doesn’t apply to the 4GB + 32GB variant and the 4GB + 128GB model. The former sells for ¥1949 ($283).

The figures are generated by a sort of counter that records the number of individual devices of a particular phone that checks into the Antutu database. Only one manufacturer gets multiple appearance on the list, and that’s Xiaomi.

Not only is Xiaomi the most popular brand, its Xiaomi Mi 5 phone is number one on the list with 115,132. The Mi 5 is still a very popular device even though it already has two successors, the Xiaomi Mi 5s and the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus (which both appear on the list). The reason why it is still popular can be narrowed down to its price. The Mi 5 is currently priced at under $300 for both its 32GB and 64GB variants. Pair that with its capable Snapdragon 820 SoC, its 4-axis main camera, and its compact size. Its no surprise why this phone is loved by many.

Next on the list is the OnePlus 3T with 83,458. The OnePlus 3T is also another device that balances price and performance. It sports the Snapdragon 821 processor, a 5.5” FHD display, 6GB of RAM and a 3400mAh battery with support for Dash Charge, OnePlus’s fast charging technology and one of the fastest on the planet now.

The Mi 5s is the perfect phone for those who want the latest specs in the mobile industry but want something with a small display. With a 5.15” 1080p screen, Snapdragon 821 chip albeit underclocked, a 12MP main camera, and a first of its kind ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, the Mi 5s is a beast with a small body. There is a 3200mAh battery with QC 3.0 and the version on sale tomorrow is the one with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It will sell for ¥1899 ($280).

Xiaomi Mi TV 43” and 48”

Xiaomi is offering the 43” version of its Mi TV for just ¥1899 ($280) tomorrow. It has a 1080p display supplied by LG, a cortex-A9 1.45 quad-core processor, and 8GB of built-in storage.

The 48-inch version has a 1080p screen from Samsung but retains all the other specs of the 43-inch version. Price is ¥2099 ($309).

Xiaomi Mi TV 3s 55” and 65”

The 55” version of Xiaomi’s TV ups the display to 4K which is also supplied by LG. It has Dolby Surround Sound, 2GB RAM, 8GB of storage, and a 1.8GHZ Cortex A53 quad-core chip. Price tomorrow is ¥3699 ($545).

The 65” version has a 4K screen made by Samsung, a 1.8GHz processor and the same RAM and storage. It will sell for ¥5299 ($780).

As the name implies, the Mi5s Plus is a larger phone that the regular Mi5s and that is mainly due to its 5.7” 1080p display. It would have been nice to have a 2k resolution panel but the display is still plenty sharp, bright and detailed.

We have nicely backlit capacitive buttons and a highly customizable notification LED light, which sits next to the 4MP Ultrapixel selfie camera.

The device looks and feels like an expensive phone. It is all-metal (except for the top and bottom parts for antennas).

Also, the build quality is top-notch. There are no moving parts or rattling buttons and it is just nice to hold the phone in the hand despite its huge footprint.

The Mi5s Plus has 2 13MP cameras with f/2.0 aperture and PDAF. The first is a regular shooter and the other is a monochrome sensor that takes images in black and white. We also have a dual tone dual-LED flash for night photography. However, there is no OIS onboard, which is a shame for the Xiaomi’s flagship phone.

Just below the camera setup, we have a super fast and accurate fingerprint sensor that can unlock your phone straight from the standby mode.

I really like the balanced and rich sound that is coming out of the loudspeaker, which can also get pretty loud.

The Xiaomi brought the IR blaster back to control the devices like TVs. The sound via the headset jack is pretty good too.

The Xiaomi Mi5s Plus packs some serious hardware components that sound very impressive on paper.

I have the high-end model that sports a brand new Snapdragon 821 chip, 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM and whopping 128GB UFS 2.0-based storage.

You can also opt in for a lower-end model that has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It’s actually a bit funny that we are talking about the lower-end model with these kind of specs.

As expected, the 3D gaming performance is just excellent. No matter what kind of games you play on the Mi5s Plus, the phone just flies and it is just a pleasure to play games on a huge display. Finally, the phone does not have any overheating issues. See a video review for gaming performance.

Xiaomi Mi5s Plus Review: USER INTERFACE

The Xiaomi Mi5s Plus ships with the Android 6.0-based MIUI 8 that we have already seen on other Xiaomi phones. As usual, we have a ton of customization options, various settings, tweaks and little features to make the phone look your own.

Some of the cool features include a baked-in theming engine, where you can choose from a lot of themes, fonts, wallpapers and so on. Also, you can go to the so-called second space, which is as Xiaomi says “like having two devices” at the same time. In other words, it is like having two accounts.

However, you have to know that the Chinese version of the phone comes with quite a few bloatware apps that may be annoying. A great thing is that you can easily remove most of them.

Finally, I’m fairly impressed with how fast the Mi5s Plus  is despite having all those features. The phone is fast, fluid and I didn’t have any hiccups or lag.

Xiaomi Mi5s Plus Review: CAMERA and IMAGE/VIDEO QUALITY

IT IS HIGHLY-RECOMMENDED TO DOWNLOAD FULL RESOLUTION CAMERA SAMPLES TO SEE THE ACTUAL IMAGE QUALITY. THE PICTURES UPLOADED ON THE WEBSITE ARE 50% SMALLER IN RESOLUTION.

We have the usual Xiaomi camera app, which allows you to take the pictures very fast and you can play with quite a few shooting modes and settings.

The stereo mode should utilize both sensors at the same time and that is supposed to give you better quality photos in terms of saturation, contrast, and exposure. I took quite a few pictures side by side in auto-mode and the dual-camera mode and tried to analyze the differences.

In my eyes, the stereo mode does help in quite a few situations that lead to a better saturation, contrast, and exposure in most of the shots. However, the results are not always that noticeable and sometimes the auto-HDR mode can take pictures that are more pleasing to the eye.

Where the dual camera setup really shines is the low-light. All the pictures I took in the stereo mode look simply better as there is a lot less noise and more detail.

You can also use the mono mode, which utilizes the monochrome sensor for high-quality black/white pictures. I’m not a huge fan of black/white photography but I have to say that I love the results.

The last mode worth mentioning is the manual mode, where you can adjust quite a few settings if you feel creative.

As for image quality, the phone can take some nice-looking daylight images. They are not on par with the more expensive flagships but they still have natural-looking colors, look pretty sharp and detailed for a $400 phone. Also, I’m happy that the auto-HDR mode does a pretty good job bringing out the detail to the shadows.However, I was a bit frustrated that the camera can’t capture a sharp image when the object is moving, e.g. the flower that is being blown by the wind.

The Panorama mode allows you to take some pretty nice panoramic photos. The stitching seems to be pretty good but some of the objects look blown out.

As for indoor shots, where the lighting conditions are far from the best, we see quite a bit of noise and less detail but in general, the images look pretty nice.

When it comes to the low-light photography if you use only the main 13MP sensor, the images  definitely have less detail and more noise than the top-tier flagships but I would say that the Mi5s does a pretty good job considering it’s price tag. As I mentioned before, utilizing two cameras at the same time really help improve the low-light image quality.

The 4MP selfie shooter can take some really nice pictures that will be more than enough for the social media.

The Xiaomi Mi5s Plus can shoot 4k videos that are very sharp and detailed, and the colors look nice. I’m pretty happy with the way the continuous auto-focus works but sometimes it can be a little jumpy. Since the phone lacks OIS, the footage may look a little shaky.

However, my biggest frustration is the fact that there are quite a lot of video compression artifacts. The audio quality suffers from the compression too. The 1080p videos look pretty nice but they have less detail. Again, it would have been nice to have the OIS to reduce the shakiness.

The night 4k video looks very dark since the f/2.0 aperture is not able to capture enough light. Also, there is quite a bit of noise but besides that, the footage looks good.

I could not properly test the 720p slow-motion video or 1080/120fps since I’m sick at the moment. The slow-motion video looks quite good but I wish there was a bit more detail.

As for selfie video, the phone can shoot at 1080p. The footage looks quite good and it will be definitely enough for most of the users. However, I don’t like the aggressive auto-exposure and inaccurate white balance adjustment. See a detailed camera video review for the video samples.

As for battery life, the phone will get you through the day even if you are a heavy user and you will get at least two full days if you are a light user. I could get over 5 hours of SOT when I used the phone very intensively and I would say this is a very good result.

The Xiaomi Mi5s Plus is very solid $400 phone. It brings a lot of flagship values like a premium design and top-notch build quality, nice and sharp display, bleeding-edge specifications and a very capable dual-camera setup.

Sure, the camera is not quite up there with the most expensive flagships but it performs very well in most of the situations. If you add a feature-rich MIUI 8 user interface and a great battery life, the Xiaomi Mi5s Plus is definitely one of the best $400 phones you can buy at the moment.

Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi Mi 5S and the Mi 5S Plus flagships a couple of days back and a few hours ago, both these phones went on sale in China. Now, if you are an international user, here’s some good news. The Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus are both up for pre-order on OPPOMART.

The Xiaomi Mi 5S is up for order at $349 on the website for the 3GB RAM version, while the 4GB RAM model will retail for $399. Interestingly, the gray version of both the models are $50 costlier on OPPOMART, so the 3GB RAM Gray version is up for $399 and the 4GB RAM Gray version costs $449.

Even the Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus, which is the larger 5.7-inch model, is listed on OPPOMART for a starting price tag of $399 for the 4GB RAM version and $449 for the 6GB RAM version. Once again, the Gray version costs $50 more than the other color variants.

The Xiaomi Mi 5S and 5S Plus officially opened for sale today online and really the progress has been rapid. The device released a few days back wowed us with the beautiful design, well packed flagship specs and as an icing on the cake, it  clutches an ultra cheap price tag of 1999 Yuan ($300) for the base variant.

We have been following the device right from the launch, to its first unboxing and even before that we have had the opportunity of seeing sample images shot by the device’s camera. Now images from what should be the device’s first teardown have emerged, brought courtesy of the guys at IT168.

The Mi 5S features a number of innovative, new technologies of which the most prominent is the under glass ultrasonic scanner. There is also an all new 3D Touch pressure sensitive display, custom bright display. Apart from that, the Mi 5S makes it out as just the third device released so far to come equipped with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 821 chipset clocked at 2.15GHz. Xiaomi crammed all these and more inside the Mi 5S and still made its price $300! Isn’t that wonderful?

For sake of clarity, the tear-down is that of the higher Mi 5S version sporting a 4GB RAM + 128GB of built-in storage. The device that is being dismantled comes in gray and we should add at this point that the   process was carried out by professionals so please don’t attempt it at home of you get a unit of the Mi 5S.

Going on, the tear-down reveals the 4GB RAM supplied by SK Hynix, the non-removable 3200mAh battery from Scud and the 2.3 inches Sony IMX378 sensor which is quite huge as well as the other components inside the flagship. Due to the design, Xiaomi had to sacrifice the infrared as well as optical image stabilization but that doesn’t remove a thing from the Mi 5S.

Xiaomi launched the new Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus yesterday and according to the company both phones use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 821 processor. But the question on people’s mind is if the Mi 5s indeed sports a Snapdragon 821 chip seeing as its clocked at 2.15 GHz which is the maximum clock speed for the snapdragon 820 while the Mi 5s Plus is clocked at 2.35 GHz.

Someone decided to confirm that and checked the CPU details using popular app CPU-Z.

The app shows the Mi 5s indeed uses a Snapdragon 821 chip which also goes by the model name MSM8996Pro. However, the CPU is not the only thing that got under-clocked, the GPU is also under-clocked at 624MHz instead of  653MHz like that of the Mi 5S Plus.

Although the Xiaomi Mi 5s might have an under-clocked processor, it still has a higher clock speed than the original Mi 5 whose Snapdragon 820 chip is clocked at 1.8GHz.

Why Xiaomi has decided to lower the clock speed of the CPU and GPU on the Mi 5s is currently unknown but we can only assume it must have been for the best reason. The lower clock speed affects both variants of the Mi 5s as seen in the image above.

The Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus are real beauties in all ramifications; beautiful design, awesome specs, innovative features and lots. However, they both cannot be at par, the Mi 5S comes in as the most innovative, and beautiful of the duo. The Mi 5S alone features the acclaimed under glass ultrasonic fingerprint scanner situated as a virtual button at the home screen region right under the display.

The Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus on the other hand, comes as a 5.7 incher and sports a dual camera at its rear which is said to include a black and white sensor and a color sensor. They both can work independently or together to give crisp clear images devoid of image noise. Its own fingerprint scanner is at the back under the dual cameras and there are no virtual buttons but capacitive keys on the device.

If you don’t look carefully, merely staring at the Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus box casing would give the impression that you are staring at the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus boxes. And quite frankly, opening up the boxes reveal devices as beautiful, if not more beautiful, as the latest iPhones. The devices comes inside the boxes with their charger and data cables.

We must not fail however to point out that the shape of the virtual button looks nothing like the iPhone’s round home key as rumored but rather maintains Xiaomi’s custom oblong shape. The only different should be the fact that the button this time around is a virtual one and you won’t get to hear the click sound when pressed.

Just about an hour ago, Xiaomi launched its new flagships, the Xiaomi Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus. After weeks of leaks and rumours, we finally know what the phone looks like and what it has and doesn’t have. One notable feature that must have caught the eyes of many readers is the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner which surprisingly is ”visible”, when we hoped it was going to be completely hidden.

CEO, Lei Jun, during the launch decided to explain why the fingerprint scanner can be seen. He said the company decided to include a groove on the front glass, right above where the sensor is located to make it easy to find. While his reason is acceptable, I still believe users will be able to unlock their phones once they know the area the fingerprint scanner covers. It might take a while to get used to but if we can make use of phones that don’t have backlit capacitive buttons in the dark, this should not be difficult. A little haptic feedback will also help.

The new generation scanner present in the Mi 5s has been in development for years before the company decided it was time to put it out for consumers. Users don’t have to worry about their hands being dirty or wet, as the phone unlocks in a split second once the recorded fingerprint is detected. This is due to the thousands of micro-seismic sensor probes of the scanner. The glass is also tough and is seamlessly integrated with the rest of the phone.

Xiaomi Mi 5S is reported to have recorded over 1.8 million reservations even though the smartphone has not even been launched. Xiaomi decided to open up registration for the device by intending buys on its official Mi website and very surprisingly, 1,823,305 persons have registered their interest to own the flagship and more are still registering.

The Chinese smartphone maker had for the first time, revealed in advance when the sales of the smartphone will commence and the channel through which it can be purchased. The Mi 5S, we are told by Xiaomi, would sell on popular e-mall Jingdong (JD.com) from September 29, just two days after it is launched officially and again reservations are being accepted even before launch.

We have seen a lot of leaks about the Mi 5S and if anything, the device is positioned to be a popular and well studded flagship device that is likely not going to disappoint in any angle whatsoever. It is billed to be the world’s first smartphone to feature the Under Glass ultrasonic fingerprint scanner engineered by Qualcomm. Along with that, the Mi 5S is expected with the news chip in town, Snapdragon 821 and a massive 6GB RAM. There is also going to be a generous 64GB of internal storage on the 5.15-inch device.

This past week end was a busy one, especially for the Xiaomi Mi 5S and leaks. We saw quite a number of them and it’s not surprising, considering that the device would be launched on September 27 which is just a day away. It is difficult to pinpoint one particular leak as the most spectacular because we were awed by each of them.

One of the leaks involved a few renders of the Mi 5s with its round virtual fingerprint scanner button. The leaked render seem to have been shot inside Xiaomi’s manufacturing plant, if the white gloves worn by the person holding it is anything to go by. The beautiful white image gives us a very clear front view of the Mi 5S and the most prominent feature revealed should be the under glass ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. Another render is that of a black colored version of what is said to be the Xiaomi Mi 5S showing similar design. A screenshot of the device’s on screen settings seems to clearly confirm this is indeed the Mi 5S.

Questions have been asked in the past as to how we’d be able to know what part of the display screen exactly the scanner would be if there is nothing to show. The circular home button which is a virtual button would be the location of the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. Let’s just point out that this looks like that on the iPhone 7 but the technology at work triumphs that of the Apple brand. It is touted to work even with dirty, greasy or wet hands.

Another very interesting leak we were gifted by popular tipster @kjuma is a render of the ceramic black variant of the Mi 5S Plus which seem to have been grabbed from an online shop already advertising the device on its website. The render depicts the dual cameras tilted to the extreme left corner of the phone’s back instead of being located in the middle. This is quite surprising, though, because we have also seen similar renders of the ceramic black color variant with the dual-cameras sitting in the middle. The good thing is we now know the Mi 5S Plus is likely going to get the dual cameras and also a top storage version with 256GB of internal storage.

To underscore the high level of anticipation about the device, a leaked photo frame advertising the device would be sold on  Jingdong (JD.com) also revealed that sales would commence on September 29, just two days after its release. So quick! However, seems the Mi 5S Plus would wait till October 7 before hitting stores.

One major feature of the Xiaomi Mi 5s is the new ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. Manufactured by Qualcomm and bringing new features, the ultrasonic scanner can be said to be the third generation of fingerprint recognition technology. And the Mi 5s will be the first phone in the world to sport it.

The common fingerprint scanners we have in phones today are capacitive scanners which have limitations. A major one is the fact that once your hands are dirty or wet, the scanner fails to read your prints and unlock your device. But that will soon be a thing of the past as this new sensor will accurately read your prints if your hand is wet or covered in sweat or grease.

Another feature is that it also allows manufacturers to hide it from plain view. That way you can have a device that is flush (for devices with scanners on the rear) or ditch the home button (for devices that have their scanners up front). The scanner will work under a variety of materials including glass and aluminium.

Director of IHS Technology, Wang Yang posted on Weibo confirming that the Mi 5s will indeed launch with Qualcomm’s ultrasonic sensor which will be embedded under the front glass. The post is accompanied by an official poster of the feature.

Staff at Xiaomi’s headquarters must be pretty busy now that the launch is just 2 days away. The internet has also been busy with camera samples of the new flagship shared by the CEO, a new poster teasing the ceramic body, and a post confirming the existence of a Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus.

Popular phone leaker @KJuma has posted online renders of the upcoming device based on details released so far. The renders doesn’t show much to be honest. The front render has a speaker grille at the top and the power button and volume rocker on the side.

The render of the back has the Mi logo sitting at the bottom and the dual cameras positioned in the middle instead of the top left corner.

Is this what the device might look like? Maybe, maybe not. But we know it is going to feature a black ceramic body (and possibly other colours).

The CEO of Xiaomi posted the first camera sample of the Mi 5s yesterday. Today, he has uploaded two more pictures on his weibo page taken with the new device.

The same rules from yesterday’s picture applies to the new ones. The pictures are original and no filters were used to enhance their outcome.

The first picture is of an iceberg and the camera does a great job in capturing its reflection as well. The second picture appears to have been shot in a canyon. You can see the lines left by the wind on the surface of the rocks very clearly.

It’s a few days to the official launch of the Xiaomi Mi 5s and more details are emerging. A new poster released today hints at the launch of a ceramic black edition of the Xiaomi Mi 5S.

Xiaomi is not new to making ceramic editions of their flagship. The Mi 5 released early this year features a gorilla glass back by default, but later the company announced a ceramic version for the Mi 5 Pro which also comes with more RAM and storage than the original Mi 5.

Does this mean that the ceramic black edition of the Mi 5s might be called the Mi 5s Pro and possibly be the version with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage? We’ll have to wait till the 27th to find out.

The text on the poster loosely translates to ”What else apart from ceramic black?”. This also teases the possibility of other colours/versions other than ceramic black.

Another new leak that surfaced recently is a live image reported to be the white version of the Mi 5s. The image was posted by @KJuma. From the picture we can see that Xiaomi has indeed ditched the physical home button that houses the fingerprint scanner, confirming the use of Qualcomm’s Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner which is embedded under the glass. And that circular button that resembles that of the iPhone shown in an earlier leak? That is also absent. In its place, we have a glowing dot flanked on both sides by extra dots. Let’s hope it remains this way.

All is now set for the unveiling of the Xiaomi Mi 5S smartphone but not until the device finally pops, we’ll perhaps continue seeing new juicy leaks and teasers surrounding the Xiaomi flagship. The latest  we’re getting about the device originated from Xiaomi and its camera.

Xiaomi today released a poster which contained the image of two camera lenses arranged vertically, having  same size and shape. The poster posed a question along with it which is translated as: “In addition to dual-camera, what else?” The rest of the texts on the poster talks about the countdown to the conference which is just 4 days away.

If the teaser is anything to go by, that means the Xiaomi Mi 5S would likely be equipped with dual main cameras mounted on its back just like the Redmi Pro. The camera specs of the Mi 5S has often been shrouded in mystery as it wasn’t revealed when the device hit AnTuTu or in the leaks we got in the past. A render of the Mi 5S sporting dual cameras appeared online months back though, but it was nothing certain. However, Xiaomi is touting the Mi 5S to come with a new high-end technology on the camera plane and its just four days before we find out how it’d play out. But then, the Mi 5 released earlier this year brought with it a lot of new high-end technological innovations so it is expected that the mi 5S will take the bar higher.

The device will also come equipped with a 3410/3,490mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0, USB Type-C interface , dual-SIM slots, and most importantly, NFC.

Xiaomi will be launching its next flagship on the 27th of September and today the company decided to go down memory lane by releasing the launch posters  of their Mi phones, right from the Xiaomi Mi 1 up to this year’s Mi 5.

• Xiaomi Mi 1/Xiaomi Phone: This phone launched with a 4” display 1GB of RAM and a Snapdragon S3 dual-core processor. The main camera is an 8MP shooter and there’s a 2MP camera for selfies. Back when it launched, Xiaomi sold it for 1999 Yuan and touted it as the phone capable of taking on the iPhone 4 and Samsung’s Galaxy S2.

• Xiaomi Mi 2: The Mi 2 was the major successor to the Mi Phone. It launched with a larger screen and a quad-core processor. It also doubled the RAM to 2GB. The company launched an upgraded version called the Mi 2s the following year which had a higher clock speed and a 13MP camera.
• Xiaomi Mi 3: This 5” device was a massive upgrade over its predecessors. Full HD display, Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip clocked at 2.3GHz, a 13MP camera with dual LED flash and a 3050mAh battery.
• Xiaomi Mi 4: One complaint people had with the Mi 3 was the lack of LTE. The Mi 4 fixed that. It also launched with 3GB of RAM and a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 chip. The Mi 4 also got refreshed in 2015 with the Mi 4C which has a Snapdragon  808 processor and a USB-Type C port;  a made for India Mi 4i with 2GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 615 processor; and a 2016 version called the Mi 4s that doubles the storage of the 3GB Mi 4c from 32GB to 64GB and has an expandable storage.
• Xiaomi Mi Note: The Mi Note launched in January 2015. It features a SD 801 chip, a 5.7” display, a 13MP camera that can shoot 4K, and a 4MP front facing camera that can record 1080p videos. A slightly upgraded version called the Mi Note Pro launched with a SD 810 processor, a Quad HD display, and 4GB of RAM. A successor, the Mi Note 2 is said to be in the works and should launch later this year.
• The other devices (the Mi 5 and Mi Max) need no introduction as they should still be fresh in our memories since they launched this year.

Xiaomi will release a new flagship device, called the Xiaomi Mi 5S on September 27. As we near the release date of the flagship, like tradition, the company has started teasing some of the features of the device. And what better way to promote the Mi 5S, than with its AnTuTu performance scores.

The company released a new teaser today which comes with the number 164,119. It takes very little time to imply that this is the AnTuTu score of the Xiaomi Mi 5S and it’s actually not very surprising given that Snapdragon 821 chip generally scores around this figure. Remember what Le Pro 3 scored? Just above 163K points. We already saw a leaked Mi 5S AnTuTu score screenshot yesterday and even that was above 164K.

However, the teaser doesn’t just focus on its top notch performance. It further asks, “What new high-end technology Xiaomi __S has in addition to performance” indicating that we can expect a lot more on the upcoming device. There are two new technologies that we can expect on the Xiaomi Mi 5S, first being 3D Touch and the second being Qualcomm’s Under Glass Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor.

Rumors and leaks have already painted a good picture of the Mi 5S, with specs like a 5.15-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 821, 4GB / 6GB RAM options, NFC with Mi-Pay and Bus card support etc.

The first time the Mi 5S showed up on Antutu we didn’t  get a score, just a bunch of details like the android version, the type of processor, GPU, and screen resolution. The reason might be because the phone wasn’t well optimised yet or Xiaomi was just bidding its time.

Today, the Xiaomi Mi 5S’ Antutu score was released online. The Mi 5S scored a whooping 164002 points, overtaking LeEco’s Le Pro 3 which used to be the former champion with a score of 163594.

The way I see it, Xiaomi’s rival is LeEco not Huawei or Vivo or OPPO. LeEco has thrown a few punches already with the launch of the Cool1 which is the only contender capable of challenging Xiaomi’s Redmi Pro and the current pricing of the LeEco Le Max 2 which sells for less than $250. Now the fight has been taken to the flagships.

LeEco announced it’s new flagship device, the LeEco Pro 3 earlier today with some very interesting specs. The phone has a 5.5” FHD display, comes in 4GB and 6GB RAM variants, snapdragon 821 processor and starts at $270. Although there were rumors of a version with 8GB of RAM but nothing like that was announced.

Xiaomi’s Mi 5S launch is next week so expect lots of leaks and new details up till the day before the launch.

Today a MIUI fan running a beta version of MIUI 8 on his Xiaomi Mi 5 found a menu called 3D Touch hidden in the settings option. The setting was turned off by default and can be switched on at will but knowing that the Mi 5 doesn’t support 3D Touch, turning it on won’t make any difference.

The first leak on the Xiaomi Mi 5s mentioned that it will feature a pressure sensitive display, so since this feature is already hidden in MIUI it means that the rumour may be true after-all.

The 3D Touch function on the iPhone allows you to do a lot of things such as peek at information without opening the app itself, or presenting new options just by holding on the app icon for longer similar to when you right-click on your computer.

The Mi 5S will sport Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 821 chip, an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner hidden underneath the front glass, and a NFC chip. There is still no leak on the pricing for the new device but we expect it to still be cheaper than flagships from other manufacturers.

Xiaomi is all set to announce the Xiaomi Mi 5S flagship on September 27. While we know that this is a top-end device, new rumors state that there could be a smaller version of the Mi 5S featuring a 4-inch display. It is said that the ‘S’ in the Mi 5S could also stand for ‘Small’, further adding to the rumors about a small screen flagship device from the Chinese company.

What’s more, a new image alleged to be of the smaller Xiaomi Mi 5S variant also cropped up online. Like the Xiaomi Mi5, this particular device is also seen to sport an oblong home button up front. We can even see the Mi logo on the top left corner, revealing the identity of its manufacturer. Further, the leak said that the phone will feature NFC and will support Xiaomi Mi Pay, which was announced about a month back. This rumor is in line with the report we heard yesterday about the Mi 5S supporting Mi Pay and Bus cards in China.

As for the Xiaomi Mi 5S regular edition, expect the phone to feature Snapdragon 821 chipset inside with 6GB RAM and 256GB UFS 2.0 memory. Another highlighted feature of the phone should be the “Under Glass” Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor. Other rumored features include 16MP f/1.8 aperture lens, 4-axis image stabilization, PDAF and 3490mAh battery.

Xiaomi will launch a new phone come September 27 and it is no secret that it’s the Xiaomi Mi 5S. Some of the details already leaked include a 3D touch display, an under-glass ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, Snapdragon 821, and 6GB of RAM. New details emerging today mentions that the Mi 5S will also get a NFC chip and support for bus card and bank card payments.

Xiaomi announced its own form of mobile payment last month called MI Pay. It will allow users store card details on their phone and allow them make payments at supported terminals. The payment platform already supports seven banks with an additional six to be added later this month. However, the supported banks are Chinese banks.

Xiaomi has officially announced it would be holding a news conference on September 27. The company dubbed the “Apple of China” has released a posted today which announced the conference date and the poster contained one major clue which points to the likely release of the Mi 5S on that date.

The poster contained a huge letter “S” which is an indication that the much touted, rumored and leaked Xiaomi Mi 5S would be the main highlight of the said date. Xiaomi is very well known for not coming out in clear terms to reveal a device’s launch date but rather the dates are usually announced by way of teasers. It is likely that other devices will be unveiled on that day alongside the Mi 5S.

The Mi 5S promises to usher in a new phase in mobile phone technology with the inclusion of the world’s first “Under Glass” ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology pioneered by Qualcomm. The expected device will also feature a large improvement in other aspects over its Mi 5 predecessor.

On the camera end, the smartphone is expected with a 16MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, PDAF, four-axis optical image stabilization and LED flash. The device will also come equipped with a 3410/3,490mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0, USB Type-C interface , dual-SIM slots, and most importantly, NFC.

Lets not forget there are rumors of a Mi 5S Plus model said to be in the works. September 27 would possibly give us the answers to that.

Its a new week and already the social media is again buzzing about the Xiaomi Mi 5s which was expected to drop on September 14 but didn’t. We now have to look forward to another date which has not been officially disclosed, although September 27 is rumored.

The Mi 5s has been the subject of several leaks and rumors for some time now. Just last week we got wind that the device will feature the world’s first under glass fingerprint technology manufactured by Qualcomm, which would make the device ditch the physical home button for a virtual one and is touted to work even with wet hands . Earlier on, AnTuTu’s Weibo page featured what was said to be the benchmark score and a few specs of the Mi 5s showing the device would be powered by the top-end Snapdragon 821 chipset, alongside a 5.15-inch 1080p display and Android 6.0 Marshmallow among others. The Mi 5s was revealed to have managed to pull a total score of 150k points.

Also on the under glass fingerprint sensor, this rumor seem to have been confirmed by Xiaomi employees on microblogging site Weibo thus making the Mi 5s the world’s first smartphone to feature the “Under Glass” ultrasonic fingerprint technology. In addition, Apple is rumored as planning to include the new technology on its  iPhone 8 expected next year. Other specs also revealed in the Weibo post include the device would pack a 6GB RAM and would have three storage variants of 64GB, 128GB and 256GB, 2.5D curved glass, NFC, 3D Touch among others.

With the avalanche of leaks that have so far surfaced around the Xiaomi Mi 5s, something big is anticipated. The flagship is billed to be the world’s first smartphone with under glass fingerprint scanner and we saw an illustration of how that works. What we didn’t see was the live image of the Mi 5s devoid of the physical home button. Well, a live photo of the Mi 5s has surfaced online on Weibo and it gave us our first glimpse of what the device looks like. The leaked photo seem to have come from well-known tipster @kjuma who has got an authentic track record.

While we cannot say the design is  out of this world, we can at least spot one notable new feature on the render and that is the round shaped home button right at the bottom edge of the display screen. The home buttons on the Mi 5 is oblong shaped but this one takes an all new round-shaped design, just like those on iPhones. The button doesn’t look like it is protruding out of the screen surface so it is possible it is a virtual button. Recall that the home button is rumored to also house the under glass ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that is said to work even when the fingers are wet.

The expected Xiaomi Mi 5S’ AnTuTu record had earlier appeared on AnTuTu’s Weibo page revealing it pulled a total score of about 150K points. The AnTuTu record listed the device as coming with a 2.15GHz Snapdragon 821 processor alongside an Adreno 531 GPU and Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, which would likely be embellished with MIUI 8. Also, the Mi 5s will  sport a 5.15-inch display with 1080p resolution and Force Touch.  The device is also rumored as having three versions with 3GB RAM + 64GB ROM, 4GB RAM + 128GB ROM and a top-end version with 6GB RAM + 256GB of internal storage.

So expect other manufacturers to use the same technology for phones made from aluminium or plastic. And while the technology in use is made by Qualcomm, other companies will surely design their own ultrasonic fingerprint scanners, so this won’t be limited to phones with Qualcomm processors.

Will this herald the death of the home button? If that happens, there’s a chance phones in the near future won’t even possess any physical buttons.

Smartphone makers seem intent on starting a new trend of ditching the physical home key entirely, instead using a virtual one embedded on the display. This trend found its place in the iPhone 7 and now we have information that Xiaomi is including that on the expected Mi 5s flagship. This was exposed by Kevin Wang, Director of electronics research in China for IHS Technology, on a Weibo post that the Mi 5s will feature fingerprint recognition technology but that the sensor is hidden under the display with no physical button to press.

It is said that the technology is known as ultrasonic fingerprint technology, developed by Qualcomm and Xiaomi is pioneering this one in the Chinese phone industry. The fingerprint sensors would still work even when your hands are wet. This should be the main talking point of the Mi 5s and it seem to tow the line of the iPhone 7’s latest fingerprint technology.

The Mi 5S had earlier appeared on AnTuTu managing to pull a total score of about 150K points. The device was listed as coming with a Snapdragon 821 processor alongside an Andreno 531 GPU and Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS. Of course the OS will be embellished with MIUI 8. Aside the few AnTuTu details, the Mi 5s is said to sport a 5.15-inch display with 1080p resolution. There are no information yet about the camera but it is expected to see an improvement over the Mi 5’s camera sensors.

Xiaomi’s expected Mi 5S flagship has joined the list devices which have hit AnTuTu benchmark of late. Before now all we know about the Mi 5S were based on rumors. We didn’t even know for sure if the Mi 5S actually exists and is in development. However, the recent AnTuTu benchmark listing which was drawn from their database and featured on AnTuTu’s Weibo page gives us some insight into the specs line-up for the Mi 5S.

According to the listing, the Mi 5S will run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system whenever it launches. The stand out feature on the leaked specs sheet should be the fact that the Mi 5S would be powered the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, tagging along Adreno 530 GPU. The display resolution is revealed as 1920 x 1080 pixels and the size as 5.15-inches. With these specs on board, the phone managed to score around 150K on AnTuTu.

We got nothing also about the memory, both RAM, and ROM, from the AnTuTu data but earlier leaks had disclosed that the Mi 5S will pack 6GB of RAM and 256GB of built-in storage. It is very likely, though, that there will be more than one memory versions on the smartphone. No data about the camera as well, but it is expected that the Mi 5S would pack an improved package from the Mi 5. We still don’t know when Xiaomi will release this one.

News of a Xiaomi Mi 5s was first reported about 5 months ago and the first detail leaked was of a curved display that supports 3D Touch. Today we have another leak listing the full specs of the phone. The spec sheet which was posted on weibo says this is an exclusive version which means there will be other variants as well.

The Mi 5s will have a 5.15” screen with 3D touch, a snapdragon 821 processor clocked at 2.4GHz, Adreno 530 GPU clocked at 650MHz, and a 6GB LPDDR4 RAM.

Xiaomi is going the iPhone 7 route by offering 256GB of storage (UFS 2.0). The rear camera is a 16MP shooter with PDAF and 4-axis OIS. It can also shoot 4K videos at 30 fps.

There’s NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, nano sim slots, and USB Type-C. The Mi 5s is powered by a 3490mAh battery with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 on board. The phone will have a thickness of 7.25 mm and is said to weigh just 147 g which is just a tiny bit more than the Mi 5 which weighs 139 g.

There is still no news on price and official release date, but we presume the launch date is not too far off. Xiaomi has slashed the Mi 5 already, so if you are planning to get a new device without breaking the bank, you should consider it.

An industry analyst, Pan Jiutang has said the Mi 5s and Mi Note 2 will follow the trend of the newly released Redmi Pro and have higher prices than their predecessors.

The Redmi series is known for its low price tag but that has changed with the release of the Redmi Pro which has a starting price of 1499 Yuan ($224) and goes up to 1999 Yuan ($299), setting the record for the most expensive Redmi phone. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise since the Redmi Pro is sporting a number of new features the company hasn’t put on a phone before, such as  the use of dual rear cameras and an OLED display.

The Mi 5s is reported to also launch with dual cameras. It will have a glass body, an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, and an advanced pressure sensitive display. The Mi Note 2 on the other hand will feature a snapdragon 821 SoC and an advanced pressure sensitive 2K display as well but with a curved edge. These new features will definitely see them having higher price tags but which are still competitive enough for them to give the competition a run for their money.

Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun Wednesday revealed on China’s microblogging website Weibo that the smartphone company is increasing efforts to improve the production of new mobile phones for release in the second half of the year.

The CEO also revealed that Xiaomi released five new mobile phones in the first half of this year and the company is planning to improve on that in the second half of the year as well as increase production to be able to meet demand for its generously priced top specced devices. According to the CEO, the second half of the year will see users getting top-end new gadgets.

Earlier statements from the tech startup had stipulated that the Xiaomi Mi 5s and Mi Note 2 would be released in the second half of this year with new innovative features like pressure touch and dual main cameras.

Rumours had claimed in the past that Xiaomi is working on a range of new devices, including a new version called Mi 5s which could feature Apple iPhone-styled 3D Touch and the Mi Note 2 which is planned as a flagship device.

Finally, Lei Jun also disclosed another cheering news that the devices which are billed for release during the second half of the year will continue with Xiaomi’s trademark affordable pricing.

However, the latest gossip says the Mi 5s might be sporting dual cameras. Remember we wrote about Xiaomi getting dual cameras from Samsung this month, it lends a sort of credibility to the matter. So, with this said, the Mi 5s might be the first device out of Xiaomi’s factory sporting the lenses.

With this new development, the Mi 5s is shaping up to be a great device if we indeed get all these features including a higher clocked Snapdragon 820 processor. However, the price tag of the Xiaomi Mi 5s will greatly influence buyers’ decision to settle for it or any of the Xiaomi Mi 5 versions which are still pretty awesome. But don’t  forget that this is still a fact we aren’t a 100% certain about.
