Xiaomi began the rollout of stable MIUI 12.5 for flagship devices in China recently and it is expected to expand up to 28 devices soon. Meanwhile, Xiaomi executive has confirmed that the MIUI 12.5 will also arrive on older devices like Xiaomi Mi 8 series, MIX 2S, and MIX 3.

Xiaomi rolled out the MIUI 12 update for the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S and MIX 3 back in August 2020. The devices, which didn’t make the cut in the Android 11 eligible devices list, are said to get the MIUI 12.5 update as per the Xiaomi executive Zhang Guoquan’s post on Weibo.

He says that the MIX 2S has Snapdragon 845 chipset and the engineers have worked on the MIUI 12.5 on its update together with MIX 3. Speaking of which, the MIX 3, which also has Snapdragon 845 chipset, launched with MIUI 10 while the MIX 2S came with MIUI 9 out of the box.

Hence, the MIUI 12.5 will be the fourth MIUI update for the MIX 2S while the MIX 3 will get it as a third major update. It is appreciable of Xiaomi to support older flagships despite them going past the software support period.

Moving on, Zhang said that along with the MIX devices, the Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 Explorer Edition will also get the MIUI 12.5 update. These devices got their last major MIUI 12 update in July and August 2020 respectively.

That said, Zhang hasn’t mentioned the 5G version of the Mi MIX 3 5G which got the direct update to MIUI 12 in September. But, we can expect it to be on the roster. What is uncertain is the update rollout date for the above-mentioned devices.

Zhang says that the update will come a little later after the company finishes the pending projects and ensures the test build is free of bugs. So, don’t expect the intermediate MIUI 12.5 on them anytime soon.

In recent years, it has become a trendy style for OEMs in the smartphone industry to release a transparent version of the popular models. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer released in 2018 was the first model with such a design and the success of the model has prompted several others to do the same including the Lenovo Legion Pro transparent edition that was released last month.

Apparently, Apple had experimented with a transparent casing for the first-generation Macintosh PC but it is likely for a different reason. A prototype version of an early Apple Macintosh Classic computer has surfaced on Twitter. The picture shows this antique Mac is housed in an unusual, completely transparent frosted case. Macintosh Classic is an antique computer we are familiar with. It is famous for its classic design and light beige casing. In the picture shared by “@DongleBookPro” on Twitter, Apple used different shell styles during the development process.

The photos of the “Macintosh Classic prototype” shows that the computer is housed in a transparent plastic case. This gives observers the opportunity to take a good look at the internal layout of this computer. The large CRT screen occupies a lot of space at the top, while most of the computing components are placed at the bottom. Thanks to the fully transparent shell, the various words inside are clear enough, and even the words “Made in Singapore” can be seen. On the front of the fuselage, the rainbow-colored Apple logo is particularly eye-catching.

On the back, a large sticker confirms that “the device is only for development purposes” and that it is “not for sale in the United States”, indicating that this is a prototype model and is not available to standard users.

Such a system is believed to help observe the effectiveness of the thermal management system during development, that is, by blowing smoke in the case and observing the path it is moved by the fan. Apparently, this trend extended to the early Macintosh computers as can be seen from this image below. The Macintosh Classic was originally sold in October 1990. It utilizes a Motorola 68000 8MHz processor, 1MB of memory (expandable to 4MB), and a 9-inch 512x342p monochrome screen. It also installed a 40MB SCSI hard drive and a 3.5-inch floppy drive, weighing about 16 pounds. It was succeeded by the Macintosh Classic II released in October 1991.

In May, Google had introduced the Android Q OS through its I/O 2019 conference. Xiaomi will begin with the beta testing of Android Q update for 9 smartphones like Xiaomi Mi 9, Xiaomi Mi 9 SE, Redmi K20 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Xiaomi Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 and Redmi K20 in the last quarter of this year. In the first quarter, the Chinese firm will carry out the Android Q beta testing for Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro smartphones.

As far as Android Q update for other Xiaomi devices, it will be rolled out after the best testing is successfully completed and all the bugs are ironed out. The Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro may receive the stable version of Android Q probably in the second quarter of 2020. Xiaomi is expected to launch the MIUI 11 update in the next months. Hopefully, the company may tag along MIUI 11 update along with Android Q update for its aforementioned smartphones.

Google is expected to introduce the final version of Android Q in August. Xiaomi has today started releasing the MIUI 10 stable version update based on Android 9 Pie operating system for its Mi 8 series smartphones. Currently, the update is being rolled out to Mi 8 and Mi 8 Explorer Edition while the users of Mi 8 UD will have to wait a bit longer.

As per the reports, with this update, the company is also introducing new features for improved camera experience, including Night Mode and 960fps slow-motion video recording. The short videos creating using 960fps slow-mo can be shared directly with friends and family via WeChat.

The Night Mode feature allows users to shoot clear images with as little noise as possible at night or in low-light areas. When you capture a photo in a low-light situation, it first detects the light and jitters through AI Smart Metering and automatically determines the exposure area. In each frame, it smartly selects 100 key feature points and fixes the color at the same time.

The MIUI 10 comes with several new features such as improved recent apps menu which is designed to better utilize the full-screen design on newer Xiaomi devices. Instead of arranging recent apps like a stack of cards, the app cards appear side by side on the screen, enabling you to see as much as six recent apps on the screen at one time.

Xiaomi says that the new MIUI makes use of artificial intelligence technology for “up to zero” loading times by studying your app usage behavior and anticipating actions. It also brings a new driving mode which relies on voice commands to avoid distractions.

But now, the latest reports suggest that even this device will soon be updated to the new Public Beta version of Xiaomi’s latest user interface based on Android Pie. However, the update is only applicable to the China Developer ROM and not the global one.

In this regard, Xiaomi will suspend the development of Android O based internal and public beta releases for the Explorer Edition. Expect the Android Pie based MIUI 10 update sometime late September.

If you adhered to the beta testing phase and installed the China Developer ROM, you will get the update through an OTA notification directly on your device, so you will be able to install it with one tap. In this case, the front camera looks to be closer to the earpiece on this model whereas it is farther apart on the model already launched. 

As you’re aware, the standout feature on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition is the translucent back but the device also comes with 3D Face unlock as well as on-screen fingerprint technology. It is possible this model will not have the 3D face unlock. In addition, this model has a 4GB RAM variant in addition to 6GB of RAM and 8GB of RAM. The Mi 8 Explorer edition was only released with 8GB of RAM onboard.

Hence, a user does not require to press harder on the screen to unlock it. The device also supports Face ID.

When Xiaomi announced its 2018 flagship Mi series models on May 31, the company came up with a surprise package when it announced the Mi 8 Explorer Edition. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition came with an attractive translucent glass back and a more powerful hardware configuration than the regular Mi 8 model. But unfortunately, the device has been elusive since then. It is yet to go on sale.

This is turning out to be a regular occurrence for Xiaomi whose high-end or custom models are hard to come by. We recall clearly the Silver variant of the Mi 6 which was almost unavailable to buy as a result of the cumbersome production and electroplating process. However, there are indications that Xiaomi will soon put the device up for grabs in China. The device was spotted recently on TENAA where it got certified one and a half month after it was unveiled.

ARCore is Google’s Augmented Reality platform just the way ARKit is Apple’s AR platform. In the last few months, more devices other than Google’s Pixel phones have been added to the list of supported devices. The recent additions include the Xiaomi Mi 8, OnePlus 5T, and Honor 10.

Google released a new version of the ARCore app and a teardown of the APK lists a number of new devices which includes the above-mentioned devices.

Google hasn’t updated the official list of supported devices yet, but if you own any of the phones mentioned below, you can confirm by downloading the ARCore app and an ARCore based app like Just a Line.

The casing comes with a translucent glass back just like the Mi 8 Explorer and it fits the Mi 8SE perfectly. The casing cost just 29 yuan (~$4).

Xiaomi decided to clear up the brouhaha and issued a statement to The Verge saying that it isn’t a sticker and that the device is indeed transparent. It also said that the parts we see “on the back upper half, for example, are parts of the actual mainboard.”

But if you have seen the HTC U12+ which is translucent or JerryRigEverything’s DIY transparent OnePlus 6, then you know the internals of a phone isn’t that visually appealing. So what is actually happening with Xiaomi’s Mi 8 Explorer Edition?

One explanation that has surfaced says that what we can see is actually dummy components that were installed on the motherboard. Xiaomi itself admits that the parts we can see are not a perfect representation of the internals but that they are “real” and not just a sticker.

The phone will go on sale soon and we expect teardowns to further confirm or nullify Xiaomi’s statement.

Xiaomi finally took the wraps off the trio of Mi 8, Mi 8 SE and Mi 8 Explorer Edition in China today. The smartphone indeed lived up to the hype that has kept the rumour mills buzzing all this while. While we await the release of the itinerary for the global launch of the models, here are a couple of hands-on pictures of the Mi 8 as well as the Mi 8 Explorer Edition.

The Mi 8 and Mi 8SE basically feature the same design but the sizes and screen ratio are slightly different from each other. The trio equally present with the notch design up at the display. The notch is similar to what we have on the iPhone X. The wideness of the cut out gave the device an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. As a reminder, the display is a 6.12-inch Super AMOLED screen with an FHD+ resolution of 2248 x 1080 pixels. and it delivers a screen-to-body ratio of 86.12 percent. The screen is enabled with features like DCI-P3 color gamut, 60000:1 contrast ratio, up to 600nits brightness, HDR support, Eye protection mode, and Always-On Display.

The rear design is also similar to the iPhone X, taking into account the vertically stacked dual rear camera located at the top corner. There is also a fingerprint sensor at the back. The Mi 8 flagship continues the glass back panel which the Mi 6 featured. In this case, it utilises a 2.5D glass panel while the mid frame is made from metal with a sleek finish. In the case of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, it features a translucent glass back which shows the internal components in a beautiful way.

There is no fingerprint sensor at the back instead, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition has an in-screen fingerprint reader that enables users to unlock the phone simply touch and scan fingerprint sensor embedded that is embedded in its display. Xiaomi claims that since the display of the phone is equipped with a highly sensitive pressure sensor, it can instantly scan and unlock the phone by touching on the screen gently. Hence, a user does not require to press harder on the screen to unlock it.

The device is up for pre-orders already and ill go on sale as from June 5 in China. There is no word yet on the global launch but that should happen soon. Check some more pictures of both the Mi 8 and Mi 8 Explorer Edition from below.
