Xiaomi has officially published the kernel source code for the Mi 8 Lite on GitHub. The Mi 8 Lite was released not too long ago alongside the Mi 8 Pro and it comes with a premium flagship look as well as a decent mid-range hardware setup. The Mi 8 Lite is the cheapest among the past and the sales have been brilliant so far. Thus, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the device is being positioned to appeal to a wider audience with the release of the kernel source code.

The Mi 8 Lite comes running Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 10 and some persons are really not too keen about smartphones that don’t run stock Android. But with the release of the kernel source code, third-party ROM developers can develop more personalized ROMs, bringing more customization features. As a reminder, Xiaomi 8 Lite is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor and comes with a 12MP + 5MP AI dual camera with dual PDAF at the rear. The device features a 24MP Sony IMX576 selfie camera at the front.

Xiaomi unveiled the Mi 8 Lite alongside the Mi 8 Pro on September 19 with the two models coming out with premium designs. While the Mi 8 Pro is postured as a flagship continuation of the Mi 8, the Mi 8 Lite has a mid-range posture and that is reflected in the affordable pricing it adopts. The Mi 8 Lite also comes out as the first Xiaomi model to feature a gradient glass design. It comes in Dream Blue, Twilight Gold and Deep Space Gray colour variants. All three use the gradient colour hue.

Xiaomi has now revealed an interesting detail of the Mi 8 Lite rear glass panel. According to a short video shared on video sharing platform Miaopai, the Mi 8 Lite rear panel is actually a transparent glass panel when removed from the device. This leaves us wondering how the transparent glass was able to look like coloured glass when adorned on the Mi 8. The Chinese company explained that the glass has a number of tiny coatings, forming a nano-scale of different thickness on the surface. This design relies on the refractive properties of glass such that when the light hit the glass, the rays get scattered using optical properties such as interference, absorption and diffraction to give us the gradient hue. When in the open, it is a clear transparent glass but when place on top of a dark cardboard sheet, the Blue gradient hue comes through. This same principle applies for all three gradient variants the Mi 8 Lite is available in.

Despite the glass back, the Mi 8 Lite is just 7.5mm thick which means the glass isn’t very thick. Another thing, if you don’t believe this, Xiaomi has asked that you can try taking off the rear panel to confirm this. That may not be a good idea anyway, except you have got the expertise. Xiaomi has officially announced that the new Mi 8 Lite 4GB + 128GB version will officially go on sale tomorrow in China. The new version will be on sale at 10 AM UTC with a price tag of 1,799 yuan. 

The Mi 8 Lite was announced in September as a trimmed-down variant of the company’s flagship smartphone Xiaomi Mi 8 launched in May. The Mi 8 Lite features a 6.26-inch Full HD+ display having a screen resolution of 2560 x 1080 pixels, 19:9 aspect ratio, and a notch on top of the display. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660 AIE octa-core processor, coupled with Adreno 512 GPU. The chipset is manufactured using an advanced 14nm FinFET process.

The phone was originally made available in three variants based on memory configuration — 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, 6GB RAM + 64GB storage, and 6GB RAM + 128GB storage. With this new 4GB+128GB variant, the Mi 8 Lite is now available in four different storage versions. The new variant is also available in three colour options just as the others— Dream Blue, Twilight Gold, and Black. Other configurations are also similar to those of the existing memory versions.
